Title: Fighting For Survival
Author: AddictedtoBuffy
Rating: NC17
Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Again a huge thanks to the talented Bubbysbub who puts up with me switching tense in the middle of a sentence.

Fighting For Survival
Spike and Xander pulled up in front of the Magic Box in Xander’s fairly new Four-Wheeled-Drive.
“You ready for this, pet? What are you gonna tell them?” Spike asked his lover quietly. He had watched Xander become increasingly nervous as the day drew closer to this moment. It was almost as bad as when Xan had told the Scoobies about them.
“The truth, Spike, they’ll find out eventually anyway. It’s better coming from me.” Xander sighed; he was ecstatic about moving to L.A. He still got to do construction, which he loved and he also got to live with both his lovers, being able to see them both first thing in the morning and last thing at night, everyday! The only downside was leaving his friends especially Willow who was his oldest friend, with Jesse being dead.
He was anticipating the explosion he knew would occur once they explained why they were moving to L.A. He knew that this news would hurt Buffy and probably damage their relationship; she still couldn’t understand why he was with Spike. However, she had moved on from Angel and it was ridiculous for her to expect Angel to not do the same.
Xander sighed again and opened the car door; neither of them had many worldly possessions and this was their last stop before heading to Los Angeles, city of Angel. Angel was telling the A.I team about them today so they wouldn’t have to sneak around anymore, so it was only fair that they confessed to the Scoobies. Spike scrambled out of the car and opened the Magic Box door for his lover with that infernal bell ringing to announce their presence. He sauntered in after and almost ran into the whelp, who had suddenly stopped.
“Xander, Spike I have been trying to reach you for some time now, we seem to have a situation on our hands.”
“Oh bugger! What’s wrong Watcher?” ‘Just what we need’, Spike thought. Just when he was finally going to leave Sunnyhell for good, there had to be another bloody crisis. Well they would have to deal with it without him and Xan because they were leaving tonight. Besides it wasn’t like L.A. didn’t have its own crisis of the week.
“A couple of things, actually. Joyce is poorly and in hospital, and while they are trying to find out what the problem is, our mystery lady has made another appearance. She seems to have transmogrified a snake into a beastie, to do what we’re not sure. So if you would like to help us research...” Giles finished, gesturing to a pile of books overloading the table where Willow and Tara were researching while Dawn completed homework.
“Um Giles,” Xander started nervously, “we kinda have our own news to tell everyone. When will Buffy be back?” Giles took off his glasses to clean, today was really not his day. Giles might not know exactly what Xander wanted to say but some sense was telling him that Buffy would be livid.
“Why Xander Harris, are you pregnant?” asked Willow with a smile on her face. They had been seriously researching for hours and she for one needed a break. The newcomers sat down at the table, Xander unconsciously leaning up against Spike, needing the support from at least one of his lovers.
“Don’t be silly males can’t get pregnant unless there is a spell involved. Did you do a spell Willow?” Anya asked from behind the counter. Willow was interrupted before replying when the front door opened and Buffy limped in. Dawn who was quietly studying looked up concerned; she wanted to know what was happening with her mother. She knew there was something they were not telling her and she was sick of being treated like a little kid. At the same time she was terrified and wished that she was a little child again where being hugged by her sister or mother would solve all her problems. She quickly jumped up from the table and ran over to her sister, hugging her in the middle of the store. Feeling her big sister’s arms around her did make her feel better though it didn’t erase her worry. Slowly they pulled apart and Dawn asked the question that had been racing round her head for the last couple of hours.
“Is she awake yet?” Dawn’s voice came out quite calm compared to how she was feeling inside. Buffy managed to give her a reassuring smile as she replied.
“Yeah she’s waiting for us.” Buffy was absolutely exhausted; the stake wound she took to the gut two nights ago was aching along with her shoulder and leg from her tussle with Glory. She hasn’t slept for over twenty-four hours but it was all worth it if she could keep her family safe because they were the most important things in her life, them and her friends.
“Can we take her home now?” Dawn’s innocent question brought back in Buffy’s mind what was happening to their mother, and all she wanted to do was break down in tears. However she tried to smile again knowing that Dawn needed the reassurance, brushing her hand against the hair of her little sister. And she was her little sister, even if the monks did make her.
“We’ll see. Go get your stuff.” As Dawn turned to pack her maths homework up Buffy seemed to notice everyone else who was in the shop, including Spike and Xander, who had been away for a couple of days. She turned to Willow and Giles anxious to find out if they had seen the latest beast. She could catch up with the boys later.
“So any monster reptile sightings?” Buffy asked. Spike watched the scene play out from where he was hugging Xander to himself. He knew they needed to leave soon but seeing Buffy like this; he didn’t want to upset her anymore. The chit was obviously exhausted and holding it together by a shoestring.
“None,” Giles answered. He wished there was something he could do for his slayer at this time. It is hard enough for a person to deal with their mother being this ill but the slaying on top of that, specially a big evil. Unfortunately the time was long past where Giles could go patrolling for her.
“Tara and I did a mini-patrol earlier, but biggie snake was nowhere to be…” Willow was interrupted by the snake in question smashing through the shop window. The Scoobies all turned towards it, getting ready to fight. Buffy stepped forward but one of the snake’s arms hit a display case that toppled onto her, sending her to the ground. Spike quickly pushed Xander out of the way and felt a twinge from his chip but he put up with it; he would rather have Xander bruised from his treatment than dead from a demon and he knew Angel would feel the same way. Dawn was standing in the middle of the magic box and started screaming at the top of her very capable lungs. The snake demon moved straight to her but didn’t attack. Giles frantically tried to move towards them but was hampered by the counter. The demons eyes turned red and then, as suddenly as it came, it turned and left. Tara and Willow stood quickly from where they were hiding, trying to get their magics’ up while Xander rushed from behind Spike to Dawn, making sure she was alright.
“Dawn, you okay?” He asked, taking her into his arms as he felt to make sure she wasn’t hurt.
“Why was the big snake afraid of Dawn?” Willow asked the question that most of the Scoobies were wondering. Tara checked that Anya was okay while Giles helped Buffy move the cabinet off her.
“It knows.” Buffy whispered and took off running, or at least limping. The cabinet had aggravated her injuries and she was going to have to push herself to her utmost limits if she had any hope of stopping that thing before it told Glory. Failure was definitely not an option when it was her younger sisters life at stake. Giles watched her go with a sense of foreboding knowing she was right. He also knew though, that she wouldn’t catch it in time if she didn’t have help so he took off after her.
The rest of the Scoobies were puzzled as to their abrupt departure but figured that Buffy wanted the snake demon dead, so they got on with the unheroic task of cleaning up the shop. However Spike, who had picked up Buffy’s words, was left even more confused and he wondered if Xander and he would ever get to LA.

Meanwhile Buffy was running down Main Street after the snake that was causing havoc. At this rate she would never catch up to it and every step she took jarred through her body. Even her slayer enhanced stamina and pain resistance were not helping her now. The snake turned down an alley and Buffy followed it. A car screeched round the corner towards them and Buffy jumped in as it moved past, knowing that it was Giles at wheel. Thank goodness he had gotten rid of the old Citroen; it couldn’t handle this type of pace.
The snake seemed to know they were following as it swung a garbage disposal unit directly into their path. Giles swerved to miss it and ran into a pile of stinking garbage. As he reversed to move around it Buffy gritted her teeth, wishing they could go faster, hating the time delay, knowing that the snake was getting away. However, she was grateful for Giles’s quick thinking otherwise she would never have been able to catch up to it and she couldn’t bear to think of the consequences of failing.
“I’ve gotta stop this monster before it gets back to Glory,” Buffy stated the obvious, needing to break the desperate silence.
“Glory,” Giles asked, trying to concentrate on his driving and what his slayer was saying at the same time, knowing that both were equally important.
“That's what he called her. Giles, she's gonna know Dawn's the key if we don't…”
“We will,” Giles replied, cutting off the rest of her sentence. He knew that neither of them could entertain the thought that they could fail, not if they wanted to succeed. He didn’t even ask her who the she was that Buffy referred to, focusing most of his energy on driving, but he did quickly search through his memory for anything about a Glory. It didn’t ring a bell.
They careened around a corner, still in pursuit of the snake and barely missed a parked car. The snake smashed through a tarpaulin-covered fence but Giles couldn’t stop in time, and had to reverse before Buffy could jump out. She raced through the opening, snagging a chain on the way. She dashed through the park after the snake that was heading straight for some nice double-storied buildings on the opposite end. She raced over the rocks and gained on it. Soon she was parallel to it and she went to jump to land on its back. However just as she took off, her step faltered and she felt a shooting pain through her leg. She stumbled and fell off the rock, totally missing the beast.
“Fuck,” she swore. She didn’t often swear, but she knew that she has just lost the best chance she could have had to stop it. She took off again but left the heavy chain behind, instead she picked up a rock and hoped that she could do some damage with it. The snake was slowing down and she saw Glory standing, waiting for it. Her blood ran cold and she was faced with the cold certainty, more certain than any other time in her life, that she was not going to survive the night. With that certainty, she knew that she could not fail the others; she needed to make her death mean something. She would not let the snake give Glory any information about her sister. She charged after the snake, forcing herself to go faster, her world narrowed until all she could see was the snake that had just reached Glory. She continued her rush at it and swung back her arm, knowing that she only had one chance at stopping it. The snake started hissing at Glory as Buffy brought her hand forward into the snake. Such was the force of her blow that the hand with the rock clutched firmly in it actually broke through the skin on its back and smashed through its heart, killing it instantly.
“The key is the vampire slayer’s what?” Glory screeched at the dead snake, upset that it didn’t pass on the whole message. She looked up at the blonde girl in front of her who had her pets’ blood on her hand and saw red. “I don’t know who you are shorty, but I have had enough of your nonsense,” she menaced as she stepped towards Buffy. Buffy’s eyes widened but she didn’t step back, she was too exhausted to do anything more than stand her ground. She was just happy that the snake hadn’t revealed that Dawn was the key. However the others were all in danger and she needed to get back to warn them, get away from Glory. She took a step back to turn and run, but suddenly Glory was there with her hand around Buffy’s neck, chocking her and dangling her above the ground. Buffy spared a thought for her friends before Glory snapped her neck just like Buffy herself had done to many a demon, and the slayer was dead at her feet. “Dreg,” Glory screamed at the top of her voice. ‘Where is that putrid minion?’
“Yes, your scrumptiousness?” Oh how she hated all the grovelling words they used, but at the moment, she had bigger problems, like finding her key.
“Dreg, get rid of this rubbish, for me,” Glory ordered gesturing to Buffy’s dead body. “And tell me where the nearest vampire slayer is.” She demanded. Dreg stepped back a pace knowing that she was not going to like this news and not wanting to be the focal point for her fury.
“Well your luminousness, the vampire slayer is lying dead at your feet.” Glory looked at him in chagrined disbelief for a minute before screaming out in rage.

From his hiding place in the park Giles wiped the tears that were flowing freely down his cheeks. He turned and moved back towards the car, working on autopilot, the sickening snap of his slayer’s neck being broken echoing in his ears. He would have liked to just stop and break down for a moment, but he knew he didn’t have time. Soon Glory would find out where the rest of the Scooby gang lived and would come looking for one of the slayer’s friends or family to tell her where her key was. He could not let that happen. He had to get them all out of Sunnydale right away and then when they were far away and safe he could break down and mourn her as she deserved.
