Dawn couldn’t be happier about the way things were going. School was great, she was actually making friends who didn’t have anything to do with Buffy’s prized inner circle and Buffy and Giles were boinking like it was going out of style. She giggled a little at that thought, earning curious stares from the students seated nearest her. She tried to school her face into a more serious expression although she knew Kit would want to talk to her about her giggle fit.
When Buffy was happy, the whole house seemed to hum and sing. Dawn didn’t know how that was but it was definitely true. These days she almost expected the furniture to dance when she got home from school. Hey, this was the Hellmouth; it could happen.
That didn’t mean Buffy was any easier to get along with. She insisted that Dawn pay back the people she stole from and that made going into certain places…awkward. Buffy was still ticked about Dawn swiping a toothbrush. The teenager mentally shuddered inside whenever she thought of that dumb move. It would be a long time, if ever, before she confessed that to Kit.
Don’t get her wrong. Kit was terrific and she talked about serious stuff. She wasn’t a virgin so she even told Dawn about sex which was more than Buffy would. Anya used to gabble about sex all the time but Dawn never felt like she was actually engaging in girl talk when the ex-demon did it. Anya just spoke her mind to Dawn the way she did to other people. Dawn got the feeling that, in the ex-demon’s mind, Anya put Dawn into the “human” category and simply didn’t take her feelings into account any more than she did with other human beings she met. It was nice not to be talked down to as if she was a kid but it wasn’t the same as having a real friend.
But Dawn still hadn’t told Kit about the wackiness of her life. Okay, the older girl had gotten some idea of the weirdness that was the Hellmouth on the first day of school. But Dawn hadn’t told her about the other stuff--the Key and Slayer stuff. Dawn wanted to tell her all those secrets; she really did. True friendship didn’t come without trust and, without letting the Goth girl know, it was like Dawn could never really relax around her.
It wasn’t that she didn’t trust the other girl. It was more like Dawn wanted to be liked for herself. She especially didn’t want Kit going all moony over Buffy. Buffy the Slayer, Buffy the one girl in all the world, blah blah blah. It had hurt when her wannabe boyfriend Justin had made out the only thing special about Dawn had been that she was the Slayer’s sister. She didn’t want Kit doing that.
After all, there were always Slayers. There was only one Dawn Summers. What was so special about doing backflips anyway? Cheerleaders did it all the time. There was nothing great about them. Okay, maybe Dawn had tried to be a part of the pom pom brigade for awhile. But that didn’t mean anything. She’d been under a spell, after all.
She didn’t tell Buffy about any of that. Dawn didn’t want Buffy getting the crazy idea that she was jealous of her or anything.
But maybe her older sister wasn’t so clueless about Dawn’s struggle to get a social life that didn’t revolve around the slaying gig. Buffy had told Dawn maybe she could use her new photographing skills to meet people and make friends. People loved to pose for photos and Dawn was proving to have a real knack for that. A word to Xander and the brunette Scooby had rigged the basement up as a darkroom for her. Dawn had been ecstatic and quickly decided Xander was her favorite crush again.
But photography didn’t make you friends. The only people who were really crazy about it were on the school newspaper and everybody knew those people were nerds and weirdoes who couldn’t get dates. Dawn didn’t want to be pegged as a social loser not after last year when everybody had talked about her freak-out. She wanted to meet guys and have fun.
Having a Slayer as an older sister didn’t help in that arena. Buffy was super quick to screen Dawn’s potential boytoys. Any attempt Dawn made to join up with prospective guys was swiftly investigated. Dawn wouldn’t have been surprised if her older sister had Willow keeping supernatural tabs on her.
It wasn’t like she was a baby. She was careful about boys--after the Justin and R.J. messes, she would pretty much have to be. And she’d heard the horror stories about Xander’s high school dating choices so often she could have recited them in her sleep. She didn’t want to wind up with a demon boyfriend. If Buffy came down hard on her, Dawn was even harder when it came to new guys in her life.
Not that there were that many. And, by not many, she meant none. Guys didn’t really seem interested in her and she couldn’t figure out why. She wasn’t ugly, was she? True, she knew she was a bit on the tall and skinny side, far more so than her older sister. But not all guys liked their women short and stubby.
She had to admit she was quite a bit taller than lots of boys. Buffy assured her that growth spurts often happened to girls her age and with time the boys would catch up to her. Besides, when the right guy came along, they’d both know it and all her worries would be for nothing. She’d just have to be patient.
Dawn knew all that deep down. But it didn’t help to see Kit with her Goth looks and come-hither frank sexuality oozing from her like cheap perfume getting all the guys’ attention. Frankly, she thought Kit’s looks a little scary. But the boys seemed to like it. Maybe Dawn should see about getting another tattoo, a bigger one on her shoulder where the boys could see it…
Then she dismissed that idea. No way Buffy would go for it and tattoos were expensive, both to get and to remove. She’d be better off spending her money on photography equipment and film.
She sighed and turned back to her schoolwork. Honestly, trigonometry was so boring. She almost wished the students would break into song the way they did last year. Now that would be fun.
__________
Buffy was exhilarated with her new job. Becoming an assistant to an established martial arts instructor had turned out to be a good move. After conferring with Giles, he had agreed that it was silly for her to be working in fast food. The pay stank, even with longer hours and overtime. Buffy often stank, too, and she hated the idea of coming home to Giles smelling of grease. She hadn’t minded with Spike. But then Spike had been someone to use, like a ho. She hadn’t cared about keeping up appearances with him.
Thoughts of Spike caused her to falter slightly and her opponent took advantage, catching her behind the leg and flipping her to the floor. Linda grinned and crowed, “Woohoo! I got the Buffinator!”
Her triumph was short-lived. Buffy spun around on her back and her legs connected with Linda’s, sweeping the other girl off her feet. Before Linda could get back up Buffy’s elbows pinned her down as the smaller woman sprawled over her. Buffy smiled sweetly and asked, “Linda, did you forget the biggest rule?”
It wasn’t easy to talk while Buffy was pressing against her ribcage. Linda always wondered how someone so small could pack so much of a punch or hold down somebody bigger than she was. She wheezed, “Make sure if you got your guy down that he stays down.”
“Got it in one.” Buffy leaped up lightly and extended a hand towards Linda. The brunette with the short-cropped hair grabbed it and tried to pull Buffy down again. The blonde woman yanked and twisted and Linda found herself flying to land on her back on the mat--again. She looked up, dazed, as the other members of the class giggled.
“Sorry, Linda. You only get one chance to topple the mighty Summers and I’m afraid you blew it,” Frank Allen, the class’s master instructor, called out.
“Well, I got her down, didn’t I?” Linda pouted as she stood, wobbling slightly.
“Just the once. And only because my attention blinked out for a sec. You think you’re gonna get that lucky if you go up against somebody who means business?” Buffy shot back.
Mr. Allen turned to the other students. “She’s right about that one, people. That’s why we’re teaching this class. It isn’t so you’ll get fancy belts.”
“What fancy belts? Nothing you got goes with my wardrobe,” Nancy, another student, chimed in. The other students laughed and Mr. Allen indulged them for the moment. Then he clapped his hands sharply.
“That’s enough. Buffy’s got a point. You can’t let your guard down when you’re fighting. Who knows, you might be fighting for your life and you can’t expect the other guy to ease up just because you’ve got something else on your mind.” He glanced at the clock and added, “It looks like our time is up. See you next week!”
The various girls and women took off for the showers, chattering animatedly as they complimented and criticized each other’s performances. Buffy was about to head off with them when Frank called her over. “Buffy, can I talk to you for a sec?”
Buffy didn’t hesitate. Frank had made it clear in the beginning that he was interested in her. But she firmly told him she was with someone else and when Giles had shown up, ruggedly handsome in an emerald shirt that made his green eyes sparkle, Frank had realized he was outclassed. Since then he’d been nothing but respectful and friendly to her.
“What’s up, Frank? Something on your mind?”
“That’s what I was gonna ask you.” He grabbed a towel and draped it around his neck. “You’ve been a bit off your game lately.”
“I have? I don’t think so,” she answered, frowning. Actually she had been feeling a little ooky. But she put it down to her newfound happiness with Giles, her increased physical activity with the students and the slaying. All that work could really take it out of a gal, even a Slayer.
“I do. I’ve grown accustomed to your moves and you’ve been slipping a bit. Two weeks ago, you’d never have let Linda get the drop on you like that. Is everything all right at home?”
“Sure, everything’s peachy with a side of keen.”
“Are you sure, Buffy? You could wind up getting seriously hurt if your mind isn’t on what you’re doing in here,” Frank warned her.
“I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks, Frank.” Because of her Slayer reflexes and strength, it was unlikely that any student would be able to injure her seriously. But Frank didn’t know that and she was touched by his concern. Then the door to the class swung open and she looked up to see Giles’s tall figure striding through the doorway. Buffy beamed at him, her conversation with Frank flying entirely out of her head as she ran to her lover.
His arms spread out, Giles braced himself but still wasn’t quite prepared as 108 pounds of tiny Slayer launched herself into his embrace. “Oof! Buffy, steady on, will you? Human flesh can only take so much.”
Buffy laughed. “I’m sorry. I’m just always so glad to see you. I can’t bring myself to take you for granted not after…” Buffy faltered a little and her eyes fell away. His leave-taking and its consequences were still sore points between them. He told her endlessly that nothing short of another apocalypse would pull him from her side. Yet her unspoken fear that he would leave her again was never far away. He squeezed her in response and pressed his lips to hers.
Buffy felt the tension fly from her body the way it always did when Giles kissed her. When the ex-Watcher was with her, she felt happiness like she’d never known with anyone else. With Angel there had always been the thrill of the forbidden. Parker Abrams was a casual fling with none of the sweetness of intimacy nor trust behind their one-night stand. In the back of her mind, she’d known that Riley could never be the one for her no matter how hard she’d tried to make their relationship work. As for Spike--well, the less she thought about that mess, the better.
But Giles was the real deal. Sex with intimacy and love without shame--the complete package. She shut her eyes and pressed closer to him, losing herself in his luscious mouth. Only the throat clearing behind her reminded Buffy they weren’t exactly alone. “I hate to disturb you lovebirds. But the next class will be coming in soon and we don’t want them to think they wandered into the wrong room by mistake.”
Giles parted from Buffy reluctantly and she could see the faint flush of embarrassment on his cheeks. “And on that note, we’re Audi. Hey, Giles, I’m feeling a little funky here. Is it okay if I wash off first?”
“N-not at all, Buffy.” He eyed her overstuffed gym bag. “Do you have everything?”
“Yep. All packed and ready to go.” Buffy ran towards the showers to join the other girls.
Frank eyed the older man uncertainly. He found himself curious as to why Buffy would prefer this older man over himself or other guys her age. He thought she was a hottie and knew guys in other classes thought her very mattressable. So what was the attraction besides the obvious? “So…you never told me how you and Buffy met.”
“We knew each other at her old high school,” Giles answered. He couldn’t keep a slight chill from his voice. He was aware of Frank’s interest in Buffy but she had reassured him that his feelings weren’t reciprocated. Still, it didn’t help that the man was tall, rugged, broad-shouldered and handsome; Giles knew of Buffy’s preference for tall men even if she’d never stated it aloud.
“Really? She must have been…kinda young,” Frank probed.
“Sixteen actually.” Frank didn’t appear to twitch a muscle but Giles was certain he could guess what the man was thinking.
“Sixteen? Wow. Um, so you’ve been together for a while now?”
“Not really. She was a typical teenager. I was strictly faculty. Our feelings towards each other only changed fairly recently. We both had some growing to do before we could reach this stage.” Giles didn’t feel he had to justify himself to this man. However, it irked him that people might see him as some kind of cradle robber.
“Well, you’re a lucky guy. She’s really special. All the students love her even when she’s kicking their asses,” Frank said.
“Yes, I am lucky.” Frank tried to dig deeper. But Giles was a master at deflecting awkward questions and the conversation lagged until Buffy came back from the showers. She smelled fresh and clean with her distinctive vanilla scent wafting from her. He caught Frank’s wistful gaze from out of the corner of his eye before Buffy planted another light kiss on him.
__________
On the way to the car, Buffy’s stomach rumbled and she grimaced. “You know what? I’m kinda hungry from all the working out. Mind if we stop off someplace and get a bite?”
“Of course. What did you have in mind?” Giles opened the door to his Chevrolet. Much as he missed the Citroen, he had had to concede it wasn’t the most practical vehicle in the world for chaperoning around young ladies. Buffy’s weapons bag seemed to get bigger all the time; he would have to talk to her about that. She really didn’t need all that weaponry. Carrying such a large bag would only slow her down.
It turned out Buffy wasn’t too picky. She pointed to the first place they passed and rushed inside almost before the car was parked. Giles followed more slowly, clicking his tongue in disapproval. “Honestly, Buffy, I don’t see how you can keep eating like a teenager at your age. It can’t be healthy for you.”
Buffy found an empty table and took a seat. “Oh, please. I’ve heard about the fatty, greasy foods that English people eat. Your heavy cream has more butterfat in it than ours!”
“How do you know about that?” Buffy at times seemed so wholly ignorant about anything that went on outside her own little hermetic world that her occasional blurts about the world at large tended to throw him.
“Masterpiece Theater or something about ye stuffy olde England. Besides, I got that good old-fashioned Slayer metabolism working for me. The pounds don’t seem to stick no matter what I eat.” She waved the waitress over to their table and ordered the deluxe burger with a heaping side order of fries.
“I’m not talking about weight gain. I’m referring to the appalling amount of starches, sugars and fat in these meals. If you can grace food like this in such terms.”
“Hey, if you don’t like it, fella, you can go eat at the Doublemeat Palace. God knows what they put in their burgers,” the waitress snapped and flipped her pad shut. She stomped off and Buffy and Giles exchanged a glance before erupting into laughter.
“Oh, man. If she only knew,” Buffy chuckled. In spite of her promise to keep quiet about the contents of Doublemeat burgers, she had been unable to resist confiding in Giles. She knew the truth would go no further and it was a nifty private joke they shared.
Her food arrived and Buffy’s eyes lit up. She picked up her burger and began tearing into it ravenously. “Mmmm, I’ve been dying for protein all day,” she mumbled, the mouthful making her words barely coherent.
Giles eyed the mountain of fries distastefully. “Couldn’t you wait? I’d be perfectly happy to fix you something at my place if nothing in your house is suitable.”
Buffy smiled as she devoured her food. She loved it when Giles cooked for her. He was an excellent cook and it was nice to have a man look out for her that way. However, she shook her head regretfully and swallowed. “No way. The hunger pangs hit around noon and they’ve been getting worse. By the end of class, I was so starved I could have eaten a buffalo. I just couldn’t wait any longer.”
“Interesting. You don’t usually get this hungry during the day, do you?” He decided he was a little peckish himself and reached towards the fries only to be slapped off by Buffy’s hand.
“Hey, get your own! And as for your question, no, I usually get the munchies after patrolling. It makes me hungry just like Faith said.” Faith also raved about getting horny but she wasn’t going to bring that up. That was part of the reason she went after Spike. After she came back from the dead again, it was as if her libido was raging out of control. With Angel off limits there had been really only one person around who could match her in terms of stamina and strength.
But the things she did with Giles were definitely well above whatever she’d done with Spike. Giles might not last as long in the bedroom but he was wonderfully inventive and everything he did was with her consent and desire. She also got off on how happy she could make him. Just the thought of the things they did together caused the moisture to bloom between her legs. She wriggled on the seat and took another bite of her burger, looking at him over the sandwich held in her hands.
A slow smile lit Giles’s face as he watched her. He knew what that look meant and he could feel his jeans tighten in response. Buffy wasn’t picky about where they had sex and she would have been perfectly glad to attack him in the car. But it was still broad daylight out and he had no wish to be picked up by a police officer for lewd and indecent behavior in public.
“So how was your day?” Buffy asked.
“Hmmm?” The question took him by surprise and he had to re-order his thoughts a bit. “Quite enjoyable. Anya reports there has been a significant increase in female customers although I can’t imagine why. Maybe they’re desperate for love spells. Since I’ve been more or less relegated to managing inventory and the books, I haven’t really noticed.”
“Really? Wonder why that is.” Buffy was no longer interested. The gnawing in her belly wasn’t going away and she resumed attacking her burger with gusto. She finished it and began polishing off her fries.
“You will be sure to chew those, won’t you?” Giles stated dryly.
She wrinkled her nose at him, an endearing expression he’d grown to love. “Yes, dad. I also tie my own shoelaces and look both ways before crossing the street.”
“Buffy, I’m serious. When I came back from England, I was appalled to see how skinny you were.”
“Really?” She glanced down at her body worriedly. Had he really thought she was skinny? She knew she didn’t have the most ample figure but her other boyfriends hadn’t had any complaints. Maybe Giles preferred his woman more--round-y.
Giles continued, unaware of how anxious his girlfriend had become. “But now I’m afraid you’re going to choke yourself. You seem to pack in an inordinate amount of food these days.”
“I know! But I can’t seem to help it. Maybe now that I’m happy my appetite’s coming back.” She smiled impishly at him and stuffed two fries at once into her mouth.
His stern glance softened. “Are you really happy?”
The fries swallowed, she smiled at him. “Bliss times ten.” Buffy leaned across the table, heedless of the food in the way, and planted a firm kiss on his lips. He allowed them to cling before pulling back.
“Buffy, much as I enjoy your spontaneity, you really should curb these public displays of affection.”
“Why? I’m not ashamed of my wonderful, studly boyfriend. And the people at the Plaza Hotel didn’t seem to mind,” she cooed.
He flushed again when he recalled those gawkers and photographers he’d encountered in New York. “Be that as it may, I should point out that you are about to get ketchup on your blouse.”
“Oh!” She jumped back and looked down to see if there were any telltale stains on her clothes. “Thanks, Giles. Ketchup is hard to get out.”
“Well, then. We should save the displays for home.”
She grinned at him. “Deal.”
“However, we need to pick up Dawn from school.”
She pouted. “Spoilsport.” She thought for a minute. “Giles, I love Dawn, I really do.”
He wondered why she felt the need to point that out. “Of course. There really can’t be any doubt about that.”
“But she’s always complaining about the noise we make when you stay over and we have our little bed sessions. It’s getting to be a pain and I don’t like holding back when we’re having sex.”
His face was flaming again; he was sure of it. Giles sent a surreptitious glance around to make sure no one had heard her confession. “Well, I-I suppose we could ask Xander to soundproof your room.”
She beamed, happy once more. “Good idea. I wonder if it would take very long? All work and no play make one grouchy Slayer.”
“We’d have to ask, of course,” he responded. “And see what he’ll ask as compensation.”
“Compensation? You mean payment? Why should I pay him? He’s my friend; he should do it for free!” Buffy scowled.
“That’s hardly fair. He’s also a competent carpenter and in a position of some authority at his job. It’s only right that he should be paid for his efforts.”
“Well, he fired me my first day on the job so I’m thinking he owes me. If it wasn’t for that, I’d never have had to take up flipping burgers at the Doublemeat.” Buffy popped three fries in her mouth this time and chewed, scowling out the window.
Giles sighed and tabled the issue for the moment. Really, they had to stop acting like a couple of randy teenagers. They could put off sex until Xander got the job done--or they could just go to his new place this evening if they could make proper arrangements for Dawn.
__________
“Can I stay at Kit’s house? Pleeeeease?” Dawn whined. Kit had wanted to come home with her, Buffy and Giles in the car. But Dawn had something important to ask and she thought it might go better without an outside party listening in and making Buffy defensive.
“Sure. But I’ll be checking in on you, Dawn,” Buffy replied.
“Hey, no problem! We’re gonna take turns watching her little sister Daphne and doing our homework.” Dawn was silent for a moment and then shot Buffy a small glance. Changing her mind abruptly, she addressed Giles instead. “Giles, I told you I like the idea of you and Buffy together, didn’t I?”
Giles met her glance in the rearview mirror. Buffy and Giles had told everybody about being a couple and had met with unanimous approval from all the Scoobies and Dawn. Why would the younger Summers girl bring it up again? “Uh, yes, you did. I’m glad you don’t mind my being with your sister. I do love her, you know.”
“Oh yeah. Totally on board with the love thing. I was just wondering whether you two were gonna, you know, ever make it official.” Dawn said this with studied casualness but she continued to watch Giles out of the corner of her eye.
“Make it--?” Giles flushed up to the eyebrows and the car swerved slightly as he took Dawn’s meaning. “You mean…well, th-that is a difficult subject. Your sister and I have just gotten together and…Buffy, do stop giggling! This isn’t a laughing matter!” Giles snapped.
“No, but you should have seen your face, Giles! I thought you were going to drive the car onto the sidewalk!” Buffy laughed again and wrinkled her nose at Giles’s aggrieved expression.
“Well, are you? I mean, I wouldn’t mind and I just wanted to know what your long-term plans are.”
“Why are you asking, Dawn?” Buffy was seated in the front passenger seat and she craned her neck around to peer suspiciously at her younger sister.
“I just thought it would be nice. I like Giles and I don’t mind having him around even if the groinage keeps me awake at night.”
“That’s very kind of you, I’m sure,” Giles muttered and ignored Buffy’s sly, naughty grin.
“But I’m thinking if you do want to get married and have kids…” Dawn continued.
“Whoa! Hold the phone there a minute!” Buffy protested. “We’ve only been together less than a month and you want to see me all swollen with a baby?! What’s with you, Dawn?”
“If you’d only let me finish, you’d understand!” Dawn replied in exasperation. “I’m only saying that, if you two got married and if Buffy got pregnant, I’d be an auntie, right?”
“Yes?” Giles still didn’t see where this conversation was going.
Dawn plowed on. “Then you’d be trusting me to take care of the baby at least some times between doing homework and housework and stuff, wouldn’t you?”
“I suppose we would. But, as Buffy implied just now, that’s quite a long way off so I don’t see any need for you to worry yourself about prospective babysitting duties.”
“That’s just it, you see. I’m not worried. If I got a niece or nephew or twins, triplets or whatever, I’d totally be a good aunt. I’d wash, change and feed him or her and everything and I think if I could be trusted to do that then I could be a baby sitter right now and get paid for it and stuff, sowhaddayasay?” Dawn finished in a rush and looked pleadingly at Giles.
Buffy’s response was swift and unthinking. “You want to be a baby sitter? No way! It’s just too dangerous for you to be out late at night looking after other people’s kids.”
“Why? I’d be careful! Besides, I’ve been out in Sunnydale at night before.” Dawn stopped and mentally kicked herself as she spotted her sister’s triumphant expression.
“You mean when you went searching for yourself and wound up with Glory? Or when you ran into the arms of Harmony’s goons? Or when you went out parking with Justin? Yeah, I remember those times. How about you, Giles?”
“Your sister has a point, Dawn. When you go out, you do seem to be a magnet for dark forces. And with your Key status…” Giles added.
The girl slumped back in her seat, a mulish expression settling on her face. “I should have known you’d take her side.”
“Dawn, you’re being childish again. Hardly a conducive argument to allowing you the responsibility of tending other people’s offspring,” was Giles’s mild rejoinder.
“I PROMISE to be careful. I wouldn’t just go walking from other people’s houses. I could have Xander or Willow or Giles pick me up. And I need the extra money, Buffy. I want to show I’m responsible. This way I could pay for my own things, contribute something to the household and, and, pay back those people I stole from!” She beamed at her finishing line, certain this would win her sister around.
Giles spared her a nod before glancing at her sister. “She does make a good case for herself, Buffy. And you can’t keep her imprisoned between her home and school forever.”
“I know, Giles. It’s just--I worry, that’s all.” Her voice grew soft and concerned and Dawn felt like a heel.
“I get that, Buffy. I-It’s just you do so much for me and I just want to do my share, that’s all.” Dawn straightened up, certain that surrender was imminent. “So can I, Buffy? Please?”
Buffy darted a quick glance at Giles and then looked away again. No! I promised myself. No more leaning on Giles. That’s what made him leave the last time.
She thought about it from every angle. There was definitely a risk letting Dawn go into other people’s houses. Not all demons lurked in underground caves or sported telltale horns. She would look into everyone very carefully. Maybe Dawn could start with the neighbors, people close to home that she already knew. “Okay, Dawn. You can baby-sit.” When her sister squealed in delight, Buffy added, “But I have to know who these people are and where you are at all times. If you have to leave their houses for any reason--”
“I’ll call you on my cell. Got it. Buffy, you’ll be so proud of me. Just wait. I can do this. You’ll see.” Dawn reached over and around the front seat to hug her sister and Buffy patted her arms.
“I’m sure you can handle it, Dawnie. It’ll be good practice for when I have a little baby of my own.” She laughed out loud as the car swerved again. “Man, Giles! Since when did you turn into such a bad driver?”
“What’s your basis of comparison?” Giles murmured. “I’ve seen the way you drive.”
Dawn smirked knowingly at her older sister. “He’s gotcha there, Buffy.”
Buffy glared. “When are you supposed to be at Kit’s house?”
“I thought I’d change at home and then Giles can drive me over. You don’t mind, Giles, do you?”
Giles sighed wearily. “Of course not. Just don’t expect me to act the chauffeur every time you want to play house with your friend.”
“Thanks. You’re great, Giles.”
Buffy smiled at him, that naughty twinkle in her eye again. “Yes, he is.”
__________
Satisfied that Dawn was still at Kit’s house, Buffy hung up the kitchen phone and turned to find her beloved opening cabinet doors. “Giles, I can fix something.”
Giles puttered around the kitchen, humming tunelessly as he searched for pots and pans. “No, I’m quite all right, dearest.” He opened one drawer to bring out a wooden cooking spoon and measuring spoons for the sauce.
Buffy swung her legs idly as she tried to get her ex-Watcher to defer an extravagant meal. “Giles, if you’re hungry, you can have the tuna casserole Dawn made yesterday. I swear it’s actually eatable.”
“Be that as it may, Buffy. I’d prefer to make something I know is palatable.” Giles leaned down to fetch something from a lower cabinet and Buffy felt her breath catch as she saw her boyfriend’s butt encased in his jeans.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t mind? We could nuke it and it’d be ready in two minutes.”
“Goodness, Buffy. What is your hurry?” Giles had his back to her so he missed the telltale gleam in her eye. When a soft object hit him in the head, he pulled it off, puzzled, and found himself holding Buffy’s pants. Giles looked up to see her smirking at him and grinned back. Setting down the pot, he murmured, “Well, tuna doesn’t sound so bad.”
It felt great to have the house all to themselves. Great and a little weird. Buffy had gotten used to having her friends crashing at her place for so long the silence was almost eerie. She almost wished her mother were still alive so she could hear her puttering reassuringly somewhere close. The next moment she dismissed the notion. Her mother would have never been comfortable with Giles staying in her bedroom.
Willow had been at home but she’d quickly vacated. After a discussion with her friends, Buffy had agreed to let them take over the slaying for her on occasion. After all, they had managed without her for one whole summer and, now that Willow thought her magic was under control, the wiccan was formidable on the battlefield. Giles also had pointed out to Buffy that this would leave them with more time to themselves. After that, she’d caved in quickly. If this left her with more smooch time with Giles, who was she to complain?
Right now Giles was kissing her and that was always wonderful. He clasped her back tightly so that every inch of her front was plastered against him. Warm lips sucked and pulled at hers until she grew a trifle dizzy and had to pull back from his mouth.
“Mmmm, Rupert.” She sighed as his lips coursed across her face, sucking in an earlobe and then proceeding to nibble at her neck. He tongued the scar that Angel had left and bit down on it lightly. He loved the way her body quivered when the scar was touched in any way and the fact that an ex-lover had left it there had ceased to bother him. He continued to pull it between his teeth until she was writhing, stretching up on her toes to prolong the sensation.
They were in her room and she was glad because, the way her legs were trembling, she wasn’t sure she could stand up for much longer. Sure enough, her knees gave out and she half-staggered, half-fell on to the bed. She had wanted to make love on the couch but Giles had said it simply wasn’t big enough to contain him and he didn’t fancy toppling to the floor when she became energetic. Buffy was determined to try it someday--also the basement and the kitchen table and Willow’s room and the shower. She had plans for screwing Giles in every part of the house and she wasn’t going to let a little thing like couch space lackage stop her.
But now Giles had seated himself beside her and busied himself with unfastening the buttons on her shirt. Since she’d been erroneously pegged as Dawn’s mom, Buffy had taken to dressing less conservatively and the top was a little tight, emphasizing her breasts. He resisted the urge simply to tear the material and managed to unfasten the last tiny button. He reached in to cup her breasts through the satiny bra and she wriggled closer, moaning into his mouth as she recaptured his lips again.
She sat on his erection and it hurt a little but in a good way and he wasn’t eager to dislodge her just yet. Buffy must have sensed his discomfort, however, because she shifted slightly and began unbuttoning his shirt, tangling her fingers in the mat of hairs exposed. Giles had showed her how much he liked the sensation of having his hairs tweaked and pulled, especially around his nipples, and she was always happy to indulge him. He growled against her lips and she giggled at his response.
Undressing became awkward so they stood again, Giles murmuring in appreciation as every inch of her skin was exposed. “Buffy. So beautiful.” As he’d stated, he had found her much too skinny when he came back from England this last time. But, thanks to her increased appetite, she’d filled out nicely. He skimmed his hands down her belly, finding the spot on her side that made her wriggle and moan as he caressed it in expert circles.
Giles had learned to pace himself where Buffy was concerned. He couldn’t outlast her in bed so he was careful to bring her off at least twice before penetration occurred. Now he began tugging at her panties so that they rubbed back and forth across her clit. In moments, she was twisting, panting hard while she wound her arms around his neck.
“Rupert! Oh, that’s…so good.” She rubbed her breasts against him, causing the nipples to graze his chest with their pointed tips. She stood on her toes, straining to press her lips in contact while running her hands over his shoulders. Tiny fingers ran over the traces of scar tissue left from when he’d been in Angelus’s clutches. Giles had never spoken of the torture save that time he’d rebuked her for deceiving him about Angel’s return from hell. Until she’d made love to him, she hadn’t seen the extent of the damage.
He’d forgiven her for her deception just as she’d forgiven him for the Cruciamentum. And after she’d stopped beating herself up about it, she’d come to see the scars as marks of his life, a life he’d spent becoming a man, her Watcher and her lover. She traced the scars lovingly and moved her hands lower.
The small of his back was caressed and Giles’s hips bucked forward against hers, his erection prodding her belly. He had once explained in very clinical terms about the tight bundle of nerves that lay coiled in the small of everyone’s back and showed her precisely how touching it could make him quiver. Now she teased him relentlessly until his leg was shoving itself between hers, the mutual pressure producing an exquisite ache in them both.
He sat down on the bed, drawing her after until she lay completely stretched out on top of him. Buffy rocked over him, watching his green eyes lose focus. Large hands came to rest on her hips, guiding her to the rhythm he liked.
They shifted position until they were lying beside each other. Buffy liked this best because she could run her hands over him without having to shift his weight. Giles loved it because he could move up and down, kissing and licking every bit of flesh without worrying about crushing her. Warm lips brushed over her skin, the tongue flicking around the mounds of her breast and onto her belly button.
The Slayer moaned and brought her hand over his shoulder and down the wide back. Her eyes flew open and she gasped as he inserted two long fingers inside her to twist and stroke. His lips caught one nipple and tugged at it in rhythm with what his hand was doing inside her. Buffy squealed, pushing her body to match his movements. One tawny leg was thrown over his to bring him closer and her fingers tangled in his hair, clutching his head to her breast. “Rupert!”
“Mmmmmm…” He hummed against her tit. His fingers gave a final adroit twist and Buffy wailed, her hips bucking as she drenched his lower hand.
Giles watched while she struggled to regain control. The first orgasm of the evening had merely roused her; she was far from finished with him. Her eyes gleaming, she grabbed his head and drew him down for a sucking kiss. Plump lips caught his, the tongue flicking out to brush against the ridges just behind his upper teeth. This time he was the one to moan. In spite of his resolution, he was on the verge of fucking her into the box springs.
He pushed Buffy onto her back and began a leisurely passage down her body. Giles’s touch was thorough and oddly worshipful as if he couldn’t get enough of her. He was also blessed with the ability to surprise. Just when she was writhing into the sheets, he would rouse her by blowing a raspberry on her skin or tweaking her bottom. By the time he was on her belly, she was caught between garbled cries and choked giggles.
The bumps on her shaven mons rippled under his tongue. She had kept it bare for him when he told her how exciting it was for him to see her flesh exposed. She also loved feeling his mouth there. Until she’d done that, she hadn’t realized what powerful sensations could be drawn out of her from that area. Now he plastered every inch with kisses and licks, working his way to the button that peeked from under the tiny hood.
Buffy gasped at the first darting lick. It was too quick and she was soon squirming, her hips seeking to inch closer to his mouth. “Oh, oh, god, Giles, please. More. Don’t stop. Please!”
The juicy creases were licked, softly and then with gradually increasing firmness. He was teasing her, prolonging the pleasure and drawing things out. The bed was shaking as his Slayer bucked against his lips. His tongue plunged into her and her spine arched.
He cupped her buttocks, lifting her for better purchase, relishing the feel of her plump flesh in his hands. She was sopping wet and there seemed no end to the juices pouring from her plush inner walls. He paused to suck and pull at her clit with his lips and had to hold on tightly as she bucked again. When he probed deeper, an inarticulate, feminine squeal erupted. Lithe legs clamped around his head in spastic motions and Buffy tossed on the bed, her throat arching as another cry ripped out of her. “Giles!”
He could feel how close she was and he was suddenly eager to bring her off, to reduce her to a melting puddle all over the sheets. His efforts increased and, when he added a finger, the sensations overwhelmed her. She gripped his head with her hands and screamed his name.
Buffy couldn’t have moved if she wanted to and she was glad when Giles pulled away to let her catch her breath. He drew up beside her and didn’t speak for a moment, allowing her to settle for a moment. Buffy wound her arms around his waist and kissed him passionately. “‘S good. More?”
He chuckled, set her gently aside and reached into her drawer. When she saw him withdraw the latex sheath, she pouted. “Rupert, I told you I’m on the pill.”
“And I told you that those things are most effective when they’re used in conjunction with other items.”
“Sure. Take all the romance out of this.” She caressed his nearest cheekbone with one finger. “I just want to feel all of you inside me. No barriers.” Buffy snuggled closer, lowering her voice suggestively. “I love how you feel, Rupert. I love all of you.”
The tone of desire and the smoky hazel gaze deepened to green were almost enough to undo his intentions. Stifling the urge to yield to impulse, he pressed the condom into her hand. “It needn’t lack in romance, dearest.” Gesturing for her to unwrap the condom, he lay back as she pressed it over his erection and began sensually unrolling it over the tip. The latex was unrolled in slow increments, her hands squeezing him just right. His breath was sucked in as her grip tightened.
Buffy was put out that Giles wouldn’t give in on this subject. Ever since the first time they’d made love, he’d changed his mind about having a baby right away and been freakishly cautious about getting her pregnant. Now she was determined to punish him--only in the best way, of course.
So she drew out her touches, pushing the condom halfway down and then stopping to fondle the tip and cup and squeeze his balls. His hips were thrusting lightly and his body jiggling as she alternated her strokes, first squeezing with her left, then her right. He was breathing her name, louder and louder, when she added her mouth to suck at the covered cock. Finally, after what seemed like forever to the agonized man lying beneath her hands, she unrolled the sheath all the way to the base.
The penis was pulsing hard, the movement even more obvious with the condom covering it. Giles growled faintly and muscled arms reached for her. Once again, she marveled at the beauty of his body and chided herself for never having noticed before how well built he was and how capable in movement. All those years of watching him getting knocked unconscious had given her the dumb idea her Watcher was frail and clumsy. No such thing.
She was stretched over him again, her spread thighs catching and clenching on the cock underneath her. As she rocked, Giles panted, “I can think of a better place for him to be.”
She snorted. “Him? Do you call him by a name like other guys?”
“No need. I find he comes regardless of whether I call him or not.”
She giggled at the dirty pun. Giles was funny in bed in a way her other lovers couldn’t match. Whoever said sex had to be serious had never spent time with one Rupert Giles. She was a lucky girl to know this playful side of him.
She shifted upwards, placing the tip of the cock at her cunt and slid down over him. Her breath caught in her throat. No matter how often she and Giles made love, the awe of this moment never failed to thrill her. It was as if something deep inside shifted to welcome the missing part of herself. It felt like coming home. “Oooooh. Ruuupert,” she sighed.
“Buffy. Sweet girl.” He bit his lip when her body rocked over his. He didn’t want to speak; he was afraid of how his voice changed when he had sex with her, remembering how adversely that had affected things the first time they made love.
She had told him thoughts of Spike no longer troubled her. But he dreaded wounding her by any reminder of her time with that filthy ponce. A squeeze from her warmth and a harsh cry erupted from him in spite of himself. “Oh god! Buffy!”
He reached up blindly to cup her breasts and rolled them tenderly between his hands. Dusky pink nipples hardened and jutted between his fingers. When she mewled wordlessly and arched upward, he pulled harder, feeling a corresponding jerk from the soft form riding his.
Their bodies were moving faster and he bucked upwards, gasping and cursing as her insides rippled and clenched him. Slayer muscles moved her into a category beyond that of other women. Another squeeze and he rolled over, pinning her underneath him.
Buffy didn’t mind. She could take a greater weight than his and she usually reached a point when gentle lovemaking didn’t do it for her. When Rupert lunged forward, she could feel him sink deep inside and that’s just where she wanted him. She clutched his waist, dragging him closer, and panted in his ear for him to fuck her hard.
He obliged her and the bed began to creak and groan as their bodies collided. Giles hooked his arm under one leg, pushing her knee almost up to her shoulder, as he slid deeper with each plunge. A tight claw like grip on his shoulders and shrill mewling in his ears told him how much the altered position affected her. “Harder, Giles! Oh, that’s…more, right there! You feel so…ummm. I love you,” she moaned.
“Buffy, dear Buffy, I love you, sweet girl,” he gasped. Her free leg drew up on his back and the tiny heel rubbed fiercely on that bundle of nerves again. He lost his careful pacing and pounded away, lost in the delicious feel of the woman beneath him, in the heat surging over his own skin.
“Oh, fuck me. Ruuuupeeert!!” Her voice deepened, almost bottoming out in a kind of growl, startling him with its intensity. Her inner muscles pulled at him as if reluctant to let him go and he groaned at the lovely squeezing of his cock whenever he withdrew.
The heat in his body descended lower, that sensation that signaled he was approaching the point of no return. She cried out again that she loved him and he toppled over the edge. Moments later, she screamed and he felt her insides clutch him hard. He collapsed, panting for breath, even as he did his best to respond to the ardent kisses darted over his face.
At moments like this it was difficult to move from her, if not downright physically and emotionally impossible, desirous as he was not to lose their closeness. But he was spurred by the wish not to crush her beneath his weight. So he shifted to the side, maintaining his clasp around her waist. He removed the condom, chucking it with unerring precision into a nearby garbage can.
Buffy swept her hand down his chest, twirling and playing with the hairs, to land on his stomach. “That was terrific, Jellybelly.”
He snorted at the nickname, as always secretly pleased in spite of its silliness. She had pronounced it after feeding him in bed that first time and regretting not having taken advantage of him by licking off the small dribble of errant jelly from one of his donuts. An advantageous squeeze of donut procured at another time had afforded her the opportunity and she’d liberally applied her tongue to his stomach--and other areas. The nickname had stuck.
“I sincerely hope you never slip up and use that nickname in public. I can just imagine Xander’s ribald comments should he hear it.”
“Xander? Aren’t you more worried about Anya? I can just hear her now going on and on about orgasms and how she and Xander used to have experiments with chocolate syrup.” Buffy sobered as she recalled that Xander and Anya weren’t together any longer and she sighed, sorry that one of her best friends should be so unhappy.
“What is it?” Buffy smiled against Giles’s chest. It was wonderful how he could pick up on her feelings. He was even better at it than Angel. She kissed one nipple and then blew, watching it tighten into a taut little peak. “Buffy? Something wrong?”
“Nothing. Not with us,” she amended quickly. “I’m just remembering the breakage that is Xander-and-Anya. I wish there was some way we could get those two crazy lovebirds back together. I never thought I’d say this but they were good for each other and I still don’t know why Xander ditched her.” She drew herself up on one elbow as she tried to figure it out.
“He came back after running out on his wedding and told us he’d blown it. He didn’t say anything about it after that, not to me anyway, though I thought he tried bashing things out with Anya. But then things got worse when…” She trailed off, her face suddenly pink, as she recalled how Xander had seen Anya and Spike screwing on the camera secreted away in the Magic Box. She hadn’t told Giles about that; she figured it wasn’t her secret to tell.
Giles peered up at her quizzically. Buffy’s expression had turned furtive and he wondered what secret she was hiding from him. She’d been quick to reveal her liaisons with Spike when he’d stormed over from England to stop Willow on her magically fueled rampage. In fact, she’d talked about all of their misdemeanors. There had been no time to get into any of that during the crisis but he’d suspected that she was opening her heart to him in a way she hadn’t to the others. When he thought about that later, he was touched by the gesture. What could she be hiding now?
“Things got worse after what? Did Anya do something?”
Buffy scrambled to think of something that would come close to the truth without being an outright lie. “You know how she became a demon again, right? Things have been kinda cool between them since. Xander doesn’t really want to team up with a demon not after his bad history with them. And I guess it would make him a hypocrite after he came down so hard on what I had with Angel.” There, that was good enough. She only hoped Giles would buy it.
Her lover surprised her by grinning and pulling her face down to his. After a thorough kiss that left her breathless and dazed, she came up for air to focus on his face. “Okay, not that I don’t appreciate the kissage, Rupert. But what was that for?”
“You said had with Angel. As in past tense.”
She rolled her eyes. “Of course it’s past tense. You think I’m still carrying a torch for him? We are so over, Giles. Like the ‘Brady Bunch’ is over.”
“I know. I’m just happy to hear you say it.” He kissed her again, this time far more lingeringly. Feeling a renewed stir of interest against her hip, she reached down to stroke his length.
“Ready when you are, Rupert.”
__________
A few hours (and condoms) later, she snuggled against his chest. “Giles?”
“Mmmrwrkk.” Why did women always want to talk after sex? He was on the verge of sinking into the mattress and wondered what she could want now. Nevertheless, he pulled together his scattered faculties to try to listen.
“I was thinking about what Dawn said earlier. Do you really want to wait to have children? You’re not getting any younger. And I might not get any older, if you know what I mean.”
He did indeed. He said nothing for the moment, feeling his bliss beginning to evaporate. “Buffy, there is time. We needn’t rush things.”
She propped her head on his chest, willing him to meet her eyes. “Uh uh, Watcher mine. This is the Hellmouth we’re living on, remember? I don’t want to wait for some future whatever. We’ve got the here and now and I just want to have a child with you before it’s too--”
“Buffy, please. You are not going to die.” The bliss had been replaced by a touch of chill and his grip on her tightened.
“Newsflash, Giles. You’re about six years and two resurrections behind. Early death pretty much a part of the Slayer package.”
“You are not going to die, dammit!” Giles glared at his lover, fear and anger battling in his smoldering green eyes.
“Giles, please. I-I just want something to live after me. I don’t have some crazy idea of living my life through my kids or anything like that. I-I…” She trailed off and struggled to order her thoughts. Giles was much better at sorting out emotional issues than she was and it took her a moment to figure out what to say.
“You and I went away from each other and we both nearly went insane because of it. I want a part of me left behind--not as a legacy but a reminder. When you look into our child’s eyes, I want you to think, ‘Here is Buffy. Here is a piece of her that will remain in this world. This is someone we made together and I will love and protect this part of her always.’ “
The tears he could sense surfacing stung his eyes and he blinked, not wanting her to see them. “You want to have a child--for me?”
She drew up so that her face was level with his. “I just want to make sure you’re not alone. I want you to know there’s something in this world worth fighting for, worth living for. I don’t ever want you to go anti-Giles the way you did when you knew I was dead.”
Gratitude and deep love welled up in him. He had kidded Buffy of being self-involved once. But the depth of thoughtfulness she was expressing now made him ashamed of that uncharitable thought. She was thinking of him, of a future they would build together, and he didn’t have it in his heart to refuse her outright. Nevertheless, this was a serious step she was proposing and would require more talk and planning than a mere post-coital discussion.
He drew her close and kissed her on the forehead. “Very well, dearest. I will consider it. But we should make plans. This isn’t something to be rushed into.”
“No, of course not. As long as you’re willing to think about it, I’m cool.” She nestled into his side, content to sleep at last.”
“So what do you want to name it if it’s a boy? Algernon? Evelyn?”
Even without seeing her face, he could sense Buffy rolling her eyes. “Ha ha. Good night, Jellybelly.”
He gave a deep, rumbling chuckle and reached for the light. In moments, the room was plunged in darkness and the lovers slept, each dreaming about the patter of little feet.
