Giles stepped out of the bank and made his way to his car. The week’s takings were now safely lodged in the shop’s account. Willow and Tara were staying with Dawn while Buffy patrolled tonight, so the evening was his own. Not that he had anything wildly exciting planned – he just wanted to settle in his armchair with a glass of wine and finish his book. Maybe even get an early night. He glanced up at the sky. It was starting to turn orange. Darkness was on the way. He fumbled with his car keys and didn’t notice the man who stepped out of the shadows behind him.
Giles heard someone murmur something in Greek, and then he collapsed in a heap on the pavement. His entire body was numb, his limbs useless. An all-too-familiar face hove into view.
“ What have you done to me?” he growled through clenched teeth.
“ Sorry, Ripper old chum,” Ethan Rayne shrugged. “ Higher powers at work and all that.” He hauled the other man up and laid him in the back of Giles’ convertible. “ Don’t worry. The paralysis won’t last long.” He picked Giles’ keys off the pavement where he’d dropped them and hopped into the driver’s seat. “ Just long enough for me to get you right where I want you.”
Giles tried to struggle, but it was no use. If only he knew the specific spell Ethan had cast, he could get himself out of this. But he hadn’t heard the incantation clearly and had to settle with glaring at the warlock’s back.
“ Ethan, so help me, when this is all over –”
Ethan turned around and smirked down at his captive.
“ Trust me, Ripper. When this is all over, you will thank me.”
The car took off out of town.

“ I don’t like it,” Buffy declared. The Slayer was pacing up and down in the lounge as the other Scoobies watched.
“ Sit down, luv, you’re making me dizzy,” Spike growled.
“ I thought we agreed you could be here as long as you kept quiet,” Buffy snapped. Spike rolled his eyes. Buffy halted and addressed the room. “ So nobody’s seen him since the store closed ”
“ He had to go to the bank,” Anya told her. “ It’s very important that the money is safely locked away.” She beamed. “ At first I didn’t like the idea of giving our money to a bunch of strangers, but then Giles explained that they would keep it safe and give us some extra after a year, and now I’m fine with it.”
“ That shouldn’t take this long.” Buffy resumed her pacing. “ He should’ve been at home when I called to check in before patrol.”
“ Maybe he just got held up somewhere,” Willow ventured. “ M-maybe something came up.”
Buffy stopped pacing and shook her head. “ He’d have called. Besides, we’ve looked all over town. Twice.”
“ No, I think Red’s right,” Spike put in. “ I think maybe he found himself a fancy piece to keep him occupied.” Buffy stared at him blankly. “ You know,” Spike went on. “ A bird.” He snickered. “ I’d say something DEFINITELY came u-”
“ Spike!” Buffy hissed, glaring at him, and casting a glance towards her sister. Spike rolled his eyes again, as did Dawn. She was sick of always being ‘protected’ from bad language and ‘unsuitable subjects’. Anyone would swear she’d never been to a sex ed. class in her life. Or didn’t have a sister who was staking vampires and burning down school gyms when she was Dawn’s age.
“ Giles isn’t like that,” Buffy went on. “ And anyway, if he did have plans, he would’ve told me.”
Spike gave her a leer. “ Maybe he didn’t want you showing up and acting all ‘betrayed girlfriend’ while he’s trying to pull,” he suggested.
“ I do NOT –”
“ Real passion killer, that,” Spike went on, ignoring her. “ Don’t worry, love, you can pull that act around me any time. I promise we can kiss and make up.”
Buffy took a step towards him, eyes blazing.
“ Spike, I swear,” she ground out, “ if you don’t shut up –”
“ Bugger this for a game of soldiers,” Spike declared. “ I’m going for a fag.” He got up and headed out the back door. Buffy glared after him. Suddenly, the phone rang.
“ I bet that’s the G-man now,” Xander said, just a little too cheerfully. Buffy picked it up.
“ Giles?”
“ Mistaking me for Rupert? I’m insulted,” purred the voice on the other end of the line.
Buffy’s heart skipped a beat.
“ Ethan?”
“ The one and only.” The warlock chuckled. “ Oh, come on, you didn’t think I’d let those soldiers take me anywhere I didn’t want to go, did you?”
“ Where’s Giles?” Buffy demanded.
“ What makes you so sure I know?” Ethan asked.
“ Because whenever you show up he’s always the one you mess with,” Buffy snarled. “ Now tell me. Where’s Giles?”
“ All right, all right,” Ethan sighed. “ If you want your precious Watcher back, do exactly as I say.”
“ All right,” Buffy replied.
“ There’s an old ruined house on a hill just outside town, to the north,” Ethan told her. “ When I hang up, go to the house and walk inside.”
“ What do I do after that?” Buffy asked.
“ You’ll find out once you get there,” Ethan replied. “ Come alone. I’ll be watching. You won’t see me, but I’ll see you. If you bring anyone else with you, Ripper gets it. Understand?”
“ I understand,” Buffy answered.
“ Good.” There was a click and then Buffy was left with the dial tone. She turned and looked at the rest of the gang.
“ So, what’s the sitch, Buff?” Xander asked.
“ Ethan has Giles,” Buffy replied. “ There’s a house I gotta go to. It’s just outside town.”
Silence descended as the gang took a moment to digest the news.
“ No problemo,” Xander declared finally. “ We all load up with weapons and –”
“ I gotta go alone,” Buffy interrupted. She grabbed her jacket and some stakes. “ If anyone comes with me, something bad happens to Giles.”
“ What does Ethan want?” Willow asked.
Buffy paused. “ He didn’t say,” she remarked thoughtfully.
“ There must be something we can do,” Xander pressed. “ At least let us drive you out that far.”
Buffy thought.
“ All right,” she said at last. “ Xander, you can drive me as far as the hill. But then I want you to let me out, turn around and come straight back here.” He started to protest but she cut him off. “ Please, Xander. I can’t risk anything happening to Giles. Or you.” She gazed up into his brown eyes. “ Ethan’s tricky.”
Xander nodded reluctantly. “ Okay.”
“ The rest of you, stay here with Dawn,” Buffy instructed. “ And don’t worry. I’ll get him back.”
***
“ There it is,” Xander murmured. He slowed the jeep and switched off the engine. Buffy gazed up the hill. The stone house might have once been a mansion, but now it was just a ruin. The empty windows were like the eye-sockets of a skull. A freak wind whistled past the car. Suddenly Buffy wished it were daytime instead of night. She shoved her fear aside and hopped out of the car.
“ Thanks for the ride,” she said. “ Now go.”
“ Buff. . .”
“ Xander, please,” Buffy implored. “ Don’t follow me, don’t be a hero. There’s too much at stake here. I have to do this by myself.”
“ I know,” Xander replied. “ And I don’t like leaving you here. But. . . I guess sometimes a Slayer’s gotta do what a Slayer’s gotta do.”
Buffy gave him a quick smile.
“ I knew you’d understand.”
Xander gave her a half-hearted grin. Buffy closed the jeep door and watched as it pulled away and vanished in the darkness.
She turned her attention to the hill. A dirt track led to the house and she hurried up it. Giles’ convertible was parked at the top. Buffy narrowed her eyes and marched grimly past it. The wooden door of the building had long since rotted away, as had the roof. Buffy slipped through the doorway.
“ Hello?” she called. She moved a little further inside. The walls were made of rough grey stone. Big stone flags had once covered the floor, but now there was just soil, with the occasional clump of weeds or grass.
“ Hello?” Buffy called again. “ Hey, I’m here, I’m alone. . .”
There was a sudden grating sound behind her, like rocks sliding over each other. Buffy whirled around in time to see the stone walls on either side of the door rush together, eliminating the entrance. A quick glance around the room told her the windows had gone the same way.
“ HEY!” Buffy shouted. “ Ethan? Giles?”
“ Buffy!” Giles called hoarsely. Forgetting the vanishing door, Buffy ran further into the ruin. Near the back of the house, she found him. Giles was lying on his side with his hands tied behind his back. As she got closer, Buffy saw that his hands were in turn tied to a large metal ring embedded in the earth floor. She knelt next to her Watcher.
“ What did he do to you?” she asked fiercely. “ Where’d the door go?” He didn’t reply. Then she noticed he was trying to squirm away from her. “ Giles –”
He glanced down at himself and Buffy followed his gaze to the rather prominent bulge at the front of his trousers.
“ Oh,” was all she could say.
“ It’s an arousal spell,” Giles gasped. He didn’t think he’d ever been more uncomfortable. His left shoulder ached, the arm he was lying on was asleep, and because he was tied to the metal ring, he couldn’t roll over and rub himself against the ground. Add to that the fact Buffy was staring, aghast, at his trousers, and it was almost more than he could stand.
“ How long have you been like this?” Buffy asked.
“ Since just after sunset,” Giles replied. He writhed ineffectually, trying to find some relief. “ The spell will be broken when I –”
“ Okay,” Buffy said slowly. She tore her eyes away from his straining trousers and moved around behind him. She laid a hand on his quivering form. “ No big. I’ll just untie you and then you can. . . y’know. . . do what you gotta do. . .”
He hissed and flinched away from her touch. Buffy drew her hand back, not understanding his reaction. She couldn’t know the reason for it, of course – he’d always kept his feelings buried. But right now, her hand on his excited body was more than the Watcher could bear. Suddenly his painful state of arousal, the months of loneliness, the day-to-day frustration of having her and yet not having her, became too much and he crumbled under them. He choked out a curse as he felt hot tears sliding down his face. His humiliation was abject and total.
Buffy stared at Giles in horror as he began to shake with huge, silent sobs. She didn’t know what else Ethan had done to him, but obviously being left in this state for her to find was the final straw. She slid one arm under his head and stroked his hair with her other hand.
“ No, Giles, please don’t cry,” she begged. Mistaking the reason for his tears, she tried to reassure him. “ Okay, I’m a little freaked, but I’m not grossed out or embarrassed or anything.” He showed no signs of calming down. Buffy felt tears begin to sting her own eyes. She couldn’t stand seeing him so upset. “ I won’t tell the others,” Buffy gulped. “ No one else has to know about this, okay? This is just between you and me –”
He jerked his head out of her embrace.
“ Don’t touch me,” he wept. “ Please, I can’t bear it, not when I know you aren’t going to –” He broke off, stilled, and took a deep breath. With forced calm, and trying to muster what little was left of his shattered dignity, he said, “ Please hurry and untie me.”
Buffy barely heard him. She was too busy trying to digest what he’d said earlier.
“ Oh my God,” she murmured. “ You want me to –”
“ Please just untie me,” Giles interrupted. He was trembling again. “ Please, it hurts and I h-have t-to. . .”
At the anguish in his voice, Buffy made up her mind. She moved behind him, leaned over and began to undo his belt.
Giles tried to scoot backwards.
“ No, Buffy, I can’t ask you to –”
“ You didn’t ask,” Buffy replied. She started stroking his hair again. “ Let me do this, Giles. I only ever saw you cry once before and I couldn’t do anything to make it better then, but this time I can.” She paused and brushed away her own tears. “ Let me help you.”
He stopped squirming. Buffy unbuckled his belt and then gingerly undid his trousers.
“ Bet that feels a little better, huh,” she remarked, trying to ease the awkwardness that had suddenly settled on the room.
“ Yes,” Giles gulped.
Buffy gazed at Giles’ cotton-clad erection, feeling extremely nervous. She’d only masturbated a guy once before, and that was Riley. It had happened shortly before they first decided to go all the way. She could count the number of times she and Giles had hugged on her fingers, and now she was going to touch him in one of the most intimate ways possible. She thought about not doing it, but that would be the worst kind of teasing. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then returned to the task at hand. Giles hissed as she freed him from his boxer shorts.
Buffy whistled. “ I think I finally understand what Mom meant,” she murmured.
Giles groaned.
“ Hey,” Buffy told him. She kept one hand in his hair and reached down with her other hand to encircle him. “ Only happy noises now.” She heard him gasp as she gently ran her hand along his shaft. “ You have to tell me if I’m doing this right. I’m not exactly experienced at this sorta thing.”
“ You’re doing fine,” Giles gasped. Encouraged, Buffy continued to stroke him. “Oh God, Buffy. . .”
“ Like that, huh?” Buffy murmured. Funny – if someone had suggested to her yesterday that within twenty-four hours she’d be masturbating Giles, she’d never have believed it, and would probably have yelled “ EEWW!” loud enough to be heard in Chicago. But the truth was, it wasn’t gross. Weird, yes, but not gross. Not when he needed it so badly. She’d never thought about it before, but Giles was probably lonely. When was the last time she’d seen him even talking to a woman? Sometimes when Xander and Anya acted all couple-y, she’d catch him gazing at them with what looked like envy. And she certainly didn’t help, Buffy thought ruefully, walking around showing as much skin as she did, reminding him of what he didn’t have. And then Ethan Rayne, who was in for the biggest beating ever when she caught ith ith him, had left him here, all horny, trying to humiliate him in front of her. He’d probably expected her to go into her ditziest “ Eeww, gross!” routine, making Giles feel even worse. Well, Mr. head of the ‘Let’s Make Giles Miserable’ Club had completely misjudged just how much she cared about her Watcher.
Giles was moaning now, mostly unintelligible sounds, but she managed to pick out her name a few times. He thrust into her hand a little.
“ Faster?” Buffy asked.
“ Lord, please,” he gasped.
Buffy picked up the pace, hoping she wasn’t hurting him. He thrashed his head around a bit and groaned.
“ God, Buffy. . .” he panted. “ I’m – I’m coming. . .”
He thrust forward as far as he could as his orgasm hit. Buffy felt some of his semen hit her fingers and she took her hand away quickly. She wiped it off on the grass behind her before turning around and gazing at her Watcher’s trembling back.
Buffy laid her head on Giles’ arm and stroked his hair until he calmed down a little.
“ Giles?” she called softly. He turned his head to look at her, still dazed from the experience. “ How am I gonna. . . y’know. . . clean up –”
“ Oh,” Giles replied. “ There’s a handkerchief in my –” Buffy reached into his pocket and fished it out. She gave her fingers another wipe, to make sure, then leaned over him and cleaned off his softening penis. She tucked him back into his pants and refastened his trousers. The rest of his semen was soaking into the earth floor. Buffy looked at the dirty handkerchief and grimaced.
“ Throw it away,” Giles told her. Buffy tossed it to a far corner of the ruin and got to work on the rope around Giles’ wrists. Freed, he sat up and rubbed his dead arm before gazing at Buffy in amazement.
“ I can’t believe you just did that for me,” he whispered.
Buffy wrapped her arms around him and he held her tight.
“ You’re lonely, aren’t you?” she murmured into his shoulder.
“ Yes,” Giles replied tightly.
Buffy stroked his back.
“ No one for Buffy and no one for poor Giles, either,” she remarked quietly. “ No one for you for a long time.”
“ I must admit,” Giles replied, “ there are times when I’d trade it all for a warm bed and a good woman. . .” His voice caught in his throat and he broke off, trying to compose himself. Buffy lifted her head off his shoulder and pulled away slightly. She gazed up at him, lip trembling.
“ Would you trade me, too?”
Giles gave a sigh, and pushed a stray hair out of her face. She might as well know now. “ Buffy. . . I want you to BE the woman.”
Buffy’s eyes widened.
“ Oh,” she said in a tiny voice.
Giles swallowed and looked away.
“ I know this seems sudden,” he said quietly, “ but I’ve felt this way for a long time. And believe me, it would make things so much easier if I didn’t.” Buffy gazed up at him, trying to take in what he was saying. “ I tried to convince myself I was just a lonely old man, and that it was only natural that I should seek your company – you are my Slayer, after all. But I know that’s not the case.” He paused, gathering strength. “ Buffy, I don’t expect anything from you. I know you’ll never look at me the way you look at Angel or, or Riley. . .”
“ Who says I won’t?” Buffy asked indignantly.
Giles looked at her and gave her a short, sad smile.
“ You,” he answered softly. “ You’ve made it clear on more than one occasion that you think I’m too old for this sort of thing. And that the mere notion of me in a physical relationship disgusts you –”
Buffy couldn’t see his face for the tears in her eyes. How could she have hurt him so unthinkingly? She flung herself into his arms and wept against his shoulder.
“ Giles, I am so sorry I made you feel like that,” she sobbed. “ I don’t know why I said those things – I guess it’s because you’re my Watcher and I’ve always felt like you belong to me. . . and I couldn’t stand the idea that there might be someone else who. . .”
She trailed off, her mind racing. Her deal with Spike to keep Giles safe. Her fear that the Council would deport him. The betrayal she’d felt on her eighteenth birthday when he confessed to her what he had been doing. Her resentment of Jenny and Olivia and even, in some way, her mother – it all came on her in a rush. It was as if a light had been switched on in her head.
“ Oh my God,” Buffy murmured. She looked up at him. “ Giles. . . I love you too.”
“ Buffy –”
“ No, I mean it,” Buffy insisted. “ I’m – I’m not just saying it because it’s what you want to hear. I wouldn’t do that to you.” She gazed up into his green eyes. They were filled with hope and fear and love. How had she missed the love before? “ It’s like there was this big bunch of feelings inside me with your name on them, but I never knew what to call them before. I just knew that I missed you when you weren’t around, and I hated seeing you with other women, and if anything ever happened to you – God, Giles, I wouldn’t know what to do.” She tried to swallow the lump in her throat, and failed. “ And now I know. It’s love, Giles. I love you.”
Giles brushed a hand against her cheek.
“ May I kiss you?” he asked softly. Buffy nodded. He cupped her face, stroking her cheek with his thumb. He took a deep breath and then leaned in, pressing his lips against hers. Buffy felt his tongue flick across her teeth and she opened up for him. She gasped at the feel of her Watcher’s soft, warm tongue in her mouth. As she began to kiss him back, she felt all the fear and tension of the evening melt away. Buffy tightened her hold on him as their tears mingled on their faces. It was a long time before they broke the kiss. Buffy wiped her eyes with her sleeve and gazed up at him. Giles gave her a shy smile.
“ Good God, we are a pair,” he said shakily. Buffy laid her head against his chest and Giles began to stroke her long blonde hair.
“ Kinda makes sense, though,” she murmured. “ Watcher, Slayer. . . it’s destiny.”
They sat like that for a while, not saying anything, until finally Giles spoke up.
“ Buffy, as much as I love holding you in my arms, my behind is starting to fall asleep.”
“ Mine too,” Buffy replied. Reluctantly, they let go of each other and got to their feet, brushing off their clothes. Buffy slid an arm around Giles’ waist, and he did likewise.
“ It’s so weird,” Buffy remarked. “ If Ethan Rayne hadn’t grabbed you, I might never have found out how I feel and how you feel. . .” She frowned. “ I guess next time he shows up I’ll have to thank him.”
Giles stared down at her.
“ That’s just what Ethan said,” he exclaimed in surprise. Buffy looked at him, perplexed. “ When he kidnapped me outside the bank,” Giles explained. “ He said when it was all over I would thank him.” He shook his head. “ That sly bastard!”
Buffy giggled. “ You said a bad word!”
“ Oh,” Giles mumbled, blushing. Buffy laughed again.
“ It’s okay,” she told him. “ Just don’t do it in front of Dawn.” She leaned against him. “ I love you, Rupert Giles.”
“ I love you, Buffy Summers.”
The sound of rocks scraping over each other filled the air. The couple looked up and saw the walls pulling apart to reveal the doorway. Buffy looked at Giles and took his arm.
“ Let’s go home,” she murmured.
From his perch high on the back wall of the house, Ethan watched as the two got into Giles’ car.
“ You’re both happy with this?” he asked of the air.
“ Totally,” Jenny Calendar replied. “ They’re both crazy about each other. They have been for years. They just wouldn’t admit it.”
“ How about you?” Ethan asked the air on the other side of him.
“ When I first got an inkling of it, I was. . . rattled,” Joyce admitted. “ But Rupert’s a good man. I know he cares about Buffy and Dawn. . . and if being with him makes Buffy happy, then I’m happy.” She sighed. “ I guess I’ll just have to get used to my daughter dating a man older than me.” She looked at Ethan sternly. “ But I can’t say I approve of you using an. . . ‘arousal spell’ on Rupert.”
“ Oh, it was the crucial part of the whole thing,” Ethan replied airily.
“ Funny, I thought trapping them in the house until they admitted their feelings for each other was the crucial part,” Jenny said dryly.
Ethan ignored her. “ The arousal spell made Buffy realise she doesn’t find him completely repulsive,” he explained. He gave a wicked grin. “ Besides, it’s been a while since Rupert got any touch.” At the glares he got from the spirits, he shrugged. “ Well, it has! And Ripper’s MY friend, too.”
Jenny gazed up at the sky.
“ Joyce, it’s time,” she declared. She turned to Ethan. “ Great job.”
“ Good work,” Joyce said to the warlock. The spirits faded away, returning to the afterlife. Ethan used a levitation spell to get back to the ground. He decided to keep the invisibility spell up a little longer. After all, you never can tell when you’ll run into an old enemy. He gazed at the town below him. It would be nice if he could visit without getting the crap kicked out of him. To drop in and be treated as a friend for a change. After all, Ripper was the only person in the world, apart from himself, that Ethan gave a damn about. Not to mention the closest thing he had to a friend.
“ Good luck, you two,” Ethan murmured, and walked away in search of mischief.
