Angel stared at Cordelia. “You want me to help you have sex?” He’d practically fallen over himself at the thought that Cordelia might need his help. Since her champion had shown up, everybody had been gaga over the studly Pylean hero. Angel had been thrilled to think that somebody still needed him for something, anything. But this request was simply too bizarre.
Cordelia appeared unaware of the vampire’s consternation. “Yes. It was something Wesley said—a paranormal prophylactic—and it got me thinking. I couldn’t be the only woman on earth that has some supernatural gift that can be lost through physical intimacy. So I started researching and, anyway, I’m right! There is a protective potion. I take it and bang! I can.
“This woman’s name is Anita and she’s kinda in the business. She makes love potions, elixirs, things like that. She says she’s got just the thing at this address.” She scribbled something on a piece of paper and handed it to the bemused vampire.
Angel spoke slowly in the desperate hope that he was misunderstanding Cordelia’s request. “You want me to get this for you.”
“I went to my ATM. It nearly cleaned me out but I think it’s worth it.”
Angel automatically grasped the large fold of bills she gave him and then stared out the office window at the object of their discussion. “Why don’t you just send him?”
“I am sending him. He kinda insisted on it but that’s why I need you, Angel.” Cordelia halted and then elaborated in the face of the vampire’s obvious lack of comprehension. “He doesn’t know this world. I can’t send him into a demon brothel all by himself. I mean, I trust him but I’m not crazy! You’d be safe there. No woman’s going to tempt you.”
“Ah.” Angel had been happy to prove himself helpful to his seer but this was a new twist in their relationship. He never thought he’d find himself playing the role of a...panderer? Go-between? Pimp? What did you call someone who was trying to facilitate a sexual relationship between a best friend and her significant other?
__________
Groo was eager to go even though Angel hadn’t told him the nature of the establishment they were visiting and the muscle-bound champion from another world didn’t ask. Instead he greeted the trip with the boundless enthusiasm Angel realized was very much a part of his nature. The vampire grudgingly admitted this personality trait would go far to win admirers for the Groosalugg.
[He’ll be good for Cordelia, he really will. He’s handsome, rugged, friendly and obviously worships the ground she walks on. That’s a relationship Cordelia can live with. She always did want to be somebody’s queen.] The vampire smiled slightly at that thought. He valued Cordy’s opinion; he always had. She was frank and outspoken and never pulled any punches.
But he was too inclined to go off and do what he wanted in spite of other people’s advice. Almost two centuries of being a Master vampire meant he didn’t easily take orders from anybody. That made him less than obedient where Cordelia was concerned and she was the sort of woman who wouldn’t settle for anything short of complete adoration from any boyfriend. Yep, that definitely made Groo the man for the job.
Anita gave the two handsome men appreciative looks as they strolled through the brothel. “So I love your outfits,” she purred.
Angel replied, “Well, I really wouldn’t call them outfits.”
The elegantly dressed woman was mildly puzzled by this denial and made an attempt to sound them out. “But you are together?”
Groo threw his arm around Angel’s shoulder in a comradely gesture. “Yes, two champions here together,” he replied in typical exuberance.
Angel shrugged him off and hastily amended his statement. “Not together, together...just here-to-get-the-potion together.”
He found himself silently cursing Cordelia for sending him on this crazy errand. The seer had thought Groo’s Conan-the-Barbarian attire unsuitable and had dressed Groo in Angel’s clothes including a leather coat very much like the one the vampire was currently wearing. Since the two men were almost of a height, Angel’s apparel was a perfect fit. She’d also given Groo a haircut suspiciously resembling the vampire’s own—short and spiky. It made the two of them look like...well, Angel had a pretty good idea of what it made them look like.
During his years as Angelus, using sex to lure his prey had made him open to encounters with both genders. Even now, men and women who considered him a hot prospect often accosted him. And he couldn’t deny that Groo was attractive in that way. But he was here on business for Cordelia. Getting physical with Groo would be a terrible betrayal of her trust.
Oh no, I did NOT just think about having sex with Groo. Think about something else, Angel, something really boring—like cricket matches.
But since he’d arrived at this place, his vampiric senses had been assaulted with the overpowering scent of arousal from dozens of humans, demons and hybrids in the throes of ecstasy. He was getting hornier by the minute and Groo’s proximity was straining his control. His recent near-brush of carnal passion with Cordelia had shaken his iron dedication to abstinence and now he was in a cathouse with an undeniably good-looking, tall, powerfully built hunk-a hunk-a burning love.
Damn. Down, boy.
As they wandered past an open door, the sight of a man wearing only a shirt, socks and shoes chained against a wall confronted the vampire and Pylean. “Hello,” he called out to Anita. “Is Mistress Gabriella with you?”
Anita waved her hand reassuringly at him. “She’s on her way. She’s getting prepared and picking out her toys for you.”
Groo didn’t understand this exchange but he knew a damsel-in-distress situation when he saw one. He leapt forward and began tugging at the man’s restraints. “Fear not, friend! We’re here to save you.”
Angel pulled him away before he could commit another “heroic” deed, letting his hands linger just a little longer than necessary around his fellow warrior’s waist. “Groo, Groo. I think he’s...happy there.”
The Pylean swiveled his head between the two of them. “He’s a slave?”
“Don’t judge me,” the “prisoner” retorted. Angel smirked to himself; the kinkier aspects of this world were going to be a real eye-opener for its latest champion.
However, when they paused before another open door, it was Angel’s turn to be caught by the arresting scene within. Two men, one a striking brunette, the other a smaller blond, were running around in a state of half-dress. At least, they seemed to be running. To Angel’s puzzlement, the pair appeared to be moving in slow motion.
The madam smiled invitingly when she noted his apparent interest. “The room is enchanted. Everything that happens in there, every touch, every emotion, every desire, is extended for maximum pleasure.” She paused, her shrewd gaze resting on his face. “I can check the schedule if there’s someone special you’d like to bring.”
The vampire tore his eyes away from the sight before him. The small man reminded him a little of Spike. As Angelus, his sexual gropings with other vampires had included little in the way of gentleness. But in their early days, when vestiges of William had still lingered, there had been some tender moments between him and his favorite childe.
He pulled himself out of his musings to find Groo gazing in rapt absorption over his shoulder. “Angel, are those two men?”
Angel smiled uncomfortably. He could just see the questions forming in Groo’s mind and wasn’t certain how to deal with them. The vampire hadn’t been in Pylea long enough to get an idea of what, if any, sexual taboos the inhabitants had and he didn’t know how Groo would handle this.
“Well, yeah. In this world, we have all sorts of desires and sex between men is part of what we do.”
Groo appeared to think this over, his eyes never leaving the sight of the males in the ensorcelled chamber. “Yes. We have this in Pylea.”
Angel blinked. “Really? You know anybody personally who has this particular—bent?”
Groo nodded. “I encountered two warriors who had traveled years together. They had fought many battles side by side and frequently tended to each other’s needs. The friendship between them increased to the point where they became more than mere allies. They achieved kyerumption. I would lie in my tent outside theirs and hear them cry out each other’s names as they embraced. It made me long to find a companion of my own to share my joys, my pains and to be in my bed at night.” The man’s voice softened and a yearning note crept into it.
The vampire found himself moved by this painfully honest admission. He had often felt the same way after nocturnal fights alongside Buffy. The tension of battle would pass into desire and it had been all he could do to keep from ravishing her in a graveyard where they had just slain some demon. For the first time the meaning of kyerumption hit home and he clenched his jaw against the ever-present loneliness that lay in his heart.
When the lovers enfolded each other in their arms, the madam softly closed the door. “Now, now. We must let the customers have their privacy.” She walked down the hallway and turned. “It’ll take a moment to locate the potion. You’re free to wait here until I’m ready.”
Groo stood for a moment in silence. “Angel, have you ever been with a man in such a fashion?”
After two hundred-odd years there was very little that could shock the vampire but such a direct question came perilously close. If he’d been human, there would have been a fiery blush all over his face.
He schooled his features into an impassive expression and strove for a neutral tone. “Yeah. It was a long time ago before my—before I decided helping people was more important. It’s part and parcel of being a vampire. When I was human, I preferred only women. But once you lose your humanity and a demon runs freely inside you, all the rules go out the window.”
Groo’s forehead wrinkled as he attempted to understand. “Are you saying desires of this kind in vampires are simply due to a demon?”
“No! It’s just, well, vampires primarily use sex with humans to get prey and there’s no sense in limiting yourself to men or women simply because your human self preferred one over the other. It would be like humans refusing to eat hot dogs that came from male pigs. For our demons, sex with humans is simply a means to an end. It rarely has anything to do with pleasure.”
“So you never enjoyed yourself with a human male?”
Hell, this boy was like a dog with a bone; he just wouldn’t let this go! “Yes, I enjoyed it, Groo, and I made sure the human enjoyed it, too,” he snapped. “It gave my demon a sick satisfaction to see the look of joy on my victims’s faces turn to terror when the beast finally manifested itself.” He wasn’t sure why he was telling Groo this. This was the worst kind of conversation to have with a man who was going to be working by his side as a fellow champion for the Powers That Be.
Wait, he knew exactly why. He wanted to steer the Pylean away from this line of conversation. Groo was getting way too personal and Angel could feel his craving for the man increasing under the burden of his inquiries. Angel’s demon was crawling just below the surface of his skin. It remembered his fight with the Groosalugg all too well. The demon recalled with perfect clarity Groo’s fierceness, his prowess in battle, his ability to surmount pain, the feel of his body under Angel’s own as they grappled and his utter lack of fear, even after the fiend had made its appearance.
The look of that creature was far worse than what showed on the earthly plane. He had caught just a glimpse of it in the pool inside Fred’s cave but what little he’d seen had shocked Angel to his soul. The fact that the Groosalugg had faced that monster without flinching was testimony to the other man’s valor. His courage was something both Angel and Angelus could admire. Here was a true champion.
A champion who was currently staring at Angel with parted lips and a bright shine in his eyes. “Does it surpass the delight you experience with women, then?”
Now that was something he could answer without hesitation. “Pleasure is pleasure, Groo. Sex with men isn’t necessarily better...” Angel’s voice trailed away as he reconsidered the question. He had never thought about that aspect of it much.
“I would think the act between two of the same sex would be better. When you’re with someone of the same gender, you know exactly what’s going on in his—or her—body. Of course, being vampires, we can smell excitement. When we’re doing something right, we can tell right off the bat, whether we’re with a male or a female. Humans don’t have that luxury so with them it’s guesswork and practice. Lots and lots of practice.”
Angel was getting antsy with all this talk about sex. He’d been forthright with the Groosalugg up until now. Time for the big man to answer a few of his questions. “I take it you’ve never had sex then—with men or women.” Okay, that came out blunter than he had intended but something about the other man’s eagerness and the naivete of his queries told Angel this was the truth.
The mortal’s face turned scarlet and he stammered, “No, never with men, but there have been a few women. Concubines that I’ve met on my challenges and other such kinds of...women.”
It was all Angel could do to keep from laughing out loud. Man, this guy was a terrible liar. Cordelia was going to have a field day with him.
But…perhaps Angel could sample the wares first. His determination to keep away from Groo had eroded to the point where his self-control was hanging by a thread.
Because there was a definite odor coming from Groo, one Angel hadn’t picked up before, what with his being bombarded with it from all directions. But, as he shifted subtly closer to the Pylean champion, suddenly the scent swept over him like a sharp breeze.
Arousal. A hint of otherworldliness made it slightly different from that of the earthly males Angel came in contact with but the underlying aroma was the same; the vampire had encountered it too often in others to mistake it for anything else.
Groo’s questions had seemed so innocent; was the lad even aware of what was in his own mind? Well, there was one way to find out.
The dark-haired vampire gripped the other man by the hips and pulled him closer, growling low in his throat at the smell of Groo’s desire. The other man stiffened and his eyes widened but he didn’t pull away. Angel rubbed his erect cock against the Pylean’s crotch and felt a hardness to match his own.
“Angel.” The name was a breathless whisper on Groo’s lips and the vampire paused. Was the other man afraid or merely hesitant? A brief sniff revealed no hint of fear. If anything, the desire he sensed was even greater. But this wasn’t some anonymous victim from his days as Angelus; he had to be certain Groo knew what he wanted.
“Tell me if this is okay, Groo. I want to know.” Staring into those guileless blue eyes, Angel nearly burst with relief as the other man nodded slowly. Without another word he cupped the back of Groo’s head and pressed his lips against the Pylean’s own. In seconds, the other had enfolded him in a bruising hug and they were locked together, Groo pressed against the corridor wall, heedless to their surroundings.
Angel traced Groo’s lips with his tongue, savoring the feel of him, not attempting anything more daring for the moment. The Pylean tasted...different. There was no trace of cigarettes, alcohol or the pollutants that tainted every modern-day human’s skin. There was a strange wildness: the scent of the outdoors, the faint trace left from the animal skins Groo had worn up to a few short hours ago, the indefinable suggestion of a dimension foreign to Angel’s own. It was heady and intoxicating and Angel pushed his tongue gently between those teeth as he explored that flavor.
“Ahem. Hey guys, if you’re interested, Anita could book a room for the two of you. We’d prefer you didn’t do it in the hallway and startle the other clients.” A demon female with three breasts was staring at them in amusement.
Angel leapt out of Groo’s arms as if the other man had scalded him. His mind was whirling with shock and self-disgust. Jesus, Cordelia had sent him here to help her and here he was making out with her boyfriend! He risked a swift look at Groo and noted unhappily the guilt and confusion in equal measure on the Pylean’s face.
He spoke to the woman eyeing them curiously. “Ah, no, that’s not why...we’re here for an elixir for his princess.” The woman grinned knowingly but declined to comment further. Anita’s clientele prized her establishment for its discretion as well as the myriad variety of demon women presented behind her doors. The madam was a woman who knew the value of keeping secrets.
“Well, Anita sent me to fetch you. She’s in there.” The triple-breasted whore pointed to a door three entrances away from where they stood. They entered the room and saw Anita standing there apparently empty-handed.
“So where’s the...”
She interrupted Angel, her manner abruptly brisk and businesslike. “You brought the cash?” After Angel mutely handed her the thick wad Cordelia had entrusted to him, Anita waved her hand in the air. A mystical shimmer surrounded it and when she lowered her hand, a vial of dark blue liquid had magically appeared in it. She handed the small bottle to Groo with the instructions, “Make sure you tell your princess to drink it all at once.”
As the Pylean quickly pocketed the potion, the woman regarded the vampire for a moment. “I know why your earnest friend is here, but why are you? What’s in it for you?”
A shrill ringing from his cellphone prevented any answer Angel might have made. [Yes! Saved by the bell.] He snatched it out of his inner pocket. “Hello? What? Gunn? I can barely hear you. Where are you?”
Gunn’s voice sounded oddly choked as if he were having trouble breathing. “Under Plummer Park.”
“Under it?”
“Pretty much. We were tailing that woman’s fiancé and we kinda lost him.”
Fred interjected, her voice carrying the same pinched quality as Gunn’s. “But we found him—sorta.”
“Him and his date...some root-crazy tree-like demony thing,” Gunn continued as Fred picked up the slack again.
“With what looks like a DSL connection. I’m pretty sure it chats up lonely hearts online and tricks them down here for food. Maybe it gets its power that way. It’s got Gunn and me tied to the wall with its roots and we can’t get free to help Jerry!”
Gunn’s voice interrupted and now there was real concern in it. “Monster’s got a big old leathery joint jammed into the guy. I think it’s sucking the life outta him. And if help doesn’t arrive soon, we’re next on the menu.” An ugly roaring sound echoed in the background and the vampire knew neither the former gang member nor the Texan had made it.
Angel asked, “Have you called Wesley yet?”
There was a short pause and then Gunn answered in a slightly embarrassed tone, “We were kinda hoping we wouldn’t have to. Nothing against Wes but I’m not sure he could help us out at the moment. What we really need—”
The vampire listened for another moment and then called to Groo with a tight-lipped smile. “It’s for you.”
