Spoilers: Angel Episode #33: 'Redefinition'
Disclaimer: None of the characters in the following
story are mine. I don't intend any copyright infringement and I don't

A/N: This is a slash story, so if you don't like that
don't read it. It was inspired by 'Ebb and Flow' by Lilac Beauty
(also on aff.net). The pairing had never so much crossed my mind, but
after watching a few Angel episodes again, I saw the possibilities.
The first chapter is set during and following the episode
'Redefinition'.
Chapter 1 – Seeing something new
Throwing his keys on the table, Wesley loosened his
tie. The day had been absolute hell. He got himself a glass and his
half-empty bottle of whiskey, before plopping down on the couch.
Virginia had tried to cheer him up earlier, but had more or less only
succeeded in worsening his mood.
He really was a failure. She hadn't pointed in out
directly, but her silence, when he was unable to name his talents,
had said more than a hundred words. Even if he could find another
job, like she had implied, it wouldn't be the same.
Working with Angel had meant more, than just doing a
job. He had been devoted to it. To the job and to Angel. It hurt to
have the truth shoved so cruelly in his face, to have the picture of
the perfect hero, he had worshiped for some
time, so totally destroyed. He'd been a bloody fool to believe, that
he mattered to the vampire. He shouldn't have trusted Angel. But it
had been so easy. So easy to trust, when he so desperately wanted it.
Wanted to belong there.
Looking down, he saw that his glass was empty, only to
fill it again and quickly gulp the amber liquid down. It burned as it
slid down his throat, but that was a minor discomfort in comparison
to his hurt feelings.
He wasn't sure if he had ever felt more for Angel than
hero worship, but he had been attracted to the dark, handsome
vampire. He had simply ignored his faults and only acknowledged
his positive sides. But apparently he
hadn't been the only one to misjudge Angel. Cordy seemed to be just
as hurt as he himself. Maybe even more. She had worked with Angel
longer, than he had.
Filling his glass once again, Wesley let his thoughts
wander back to his work. The only one, who seemed unfazed by being
fired was Gunn. He wished, that he could have such an attitude, too.
To simply be able to say 'to hell with it' and get on with his life.
But he couldn't.
Now that his thoughts had strayed to Gunn, they
stubbornly stayed on the subject. His attraction to Angel was an old
one, but lately his fantasies had changed. The eyes were the same
dark brown, but with increasing frequency pale skin was replaced by
chocolate-colored one. But somehow it was completely different. The
intensity of his attraction for Angel had
always be the same, while his interest in Gunn steadily increased,
the more he got to know the man. With Angel it was also purely
physical, Wesley didn't feel a need to get to know everything about
him, like he did with Gunn.
Sighing, he filled the remaining bit of whiskey into
his glass. He desperately needed some clarity about his life. At the
moment everything was just muddled and unclear, but that could also
have been the alcohol. He could only think of one place, where he
could get to know what direction to take. Oh, how he hated karaoke.

They'd done it. Gunn was slowly coming down from his
adrenaline high. He looked over at Wesley sitting next to him in his
truck. Cordy had wanted to leave, so Gunn had volunteered to get
Wesley home after their visit to the hospital. The Englishman looked
like he was dozing, so Gunn choose not to disturb him. Ever since the
fight today, he viewed the other man with newfound respect.
He'd known that Wes had courage and could fight, but
he'd seen him more like a lost puppy, who trailed along behind Angel.
Tonight he's seen a totally different man. A strong, independent man.
Someone who took charge. Someone attractive.
Not that he hadn't appreciated the man's good looks
before, but it had been just that. This new Wesley was also
interesting as a person. Looking over at the Englishman again, Gunn
saw that his eyes were open.
“Hey, English. You okay?”
“My neck hurts. But otherwise I'm fine.”
Wesley managed a weak smile.
Gunn just had to smile right back. At first, he had
thought the stuffy British accent
ridiculous, but once one got used to it, it had it's own charm. When
they arrived at Wesley's apartment, the two
of them got out of the truck.
Once they were standing out on the street, Wesley was
unsure what to do. He wanted to invite Gunn in, but couldn't think of
something to say, that wouldn't sound utterly stupid. Fortunately
Gunn seemed to catch up on his dilemma, or it was just plain
coincidence.
“I've never seen your flat.”
It was a simply statement, but it proved a good opening
to continue. “You could come in and have a drink.” That
still sounded stupid. He would have kicked his own arse, if that were
possible, but to his utter astonishment, Gunn shrugged and walked in
the direction of his flat.
“You comin' English?”

“Nice.”
Plopping down onto the couch, Gunn took in the flat.
Every available surface was covered in books. He hadn't expected much
different, because that was just so typical Wes. When he looked on, a
shelf that stood mostly hidden in the corner captured his attention.
He stood up to examine it closer, when Wes called from the kitchen.
“What drink do you prefer?”
“I take beer, if you got.”
Two minutes later Wesley returned to the living room
with two opened bottles. Gunn stood in front of his corner shelf,
examining the board games stacked there. He could remember putting
them on that shelf, when he moved in, but hadn't played in ages. A
little bitterly he noted, that he had had nobody to play them with.
Gunn mockingly drew a finger through the dust and held it out to Wes,
before asking: “Don't play often, huh?”.
Wes nodded, while placing the two bottles on the couch
table and sitting down. Pulling one of the games out, Gunn walked
over to the couch and placed the box on the table.
“You wanna play?”
“Now?”
“'Course now. Don't know 'bout you, but killing
demons always gets me on high energy. Won't get no sleep anyway.”
“Me neither. Ok. We will play.”
Of all the bloody board games
Gunn had to pick 'Risk'. The favorite game
of most member's of the Watcher's council. And the one game he
royally sucked at. But at least he'd get to spend some time with the
other man. Maybe a chance for getting to know him a little better.

Two hours later the sun came up illuminating the room,
just as the last stand of Wesley's army was going down. Gunn had
easily beat him, like he expected, but they had nevertheless, spent
two absolutely enjoyable hours. He felt comfortable around Gunn, like
he had never felt around Angel or even Cordelia for that matter. They
had talked about many things of varying importance and quickly
developed an easy companionship.
“I demand a rematch. That was just luck on your
part.”
Gunn grinned when he said that and simply replied:
“Believe what you want, English, but I am the master. How 'bout
going over to Cordy's later today? You could bring the 'Risk'. But
for now..”, he yawned loudly, “...I'll go get some sleep.
See you at Cordy's.”
“Ok. Until later then.” Making a small hand
gesture, that was almost a wave, Wes sent Gunn on his way.
