Chapter
One:
Spike
glanced over at the blonde woman who was strolling alongside him, twirling a
stake in her slender fingers. It had taken them a while to get back to each
other, but now they were finally together. The souled vampire couldn’t believe
his luck. She was the centre of his world. And, from what she said, he was
hers. He finally believed Buffy, unlike her previous declaration of love on the
collapsing Hellmouth. He had thought at the time that she had said it just because
he was sacrificing himself, throwing himself on the proverbial sword. Now he
realised how wrong he had been, she loved him. ‘And not the soddin’ Poof!’ Despite his soul, Spike could not resist
sticking a metaphorical tongue out at his Grandsire. He secretly treasured the
memory of Angel’s angry face when Buffy had thrown herself into Spike’s arms in
the offices of Wolfram and Hart.
Had
been the stuff of his wildest dreams.
*******
Unbeknownst
to either vampire, Fred had called Willow’s house to ask for her help on a
mystical matter, only to get Kennedy instead. While Fred had been leaving a
message for Willow, a newly re-corporalised Spike had come into her lab. He was
bored and wanted to be entertained. Fred had tried to end the conversation quickly.
She watched as Spike cocked his head and listened to the voice at the end of
the phone.
His
face had lit up and a true smile replaced his customary smirk. The Texan cursed
vampiric hearing as Spike yanked the phone from her hand.
Spike
waved the spluttering girl off and fired off a series of questions to the
stunned Kennedy. After recovering from the shock of discovering the peroxide
vampire’s resurrection, she refused to give the frustrated vampire any news
about Buffy or Dawn and slammed the phone down.
She
had been about to leave the room when she heard Willow’s voice.
“Spike’s
alive?” Willow squeaked. She was overwhelmed with shock and surprisingly
happiness; despite their history she had missed Spike. He had been a constant
presence in the Scoobies lives, unwelcome for most of the time. But Willow had
an unspoken soft spot for the snarky vampire, mainly due to the gentleness he
displayed towards Tara, Dawn and Buffy. She had also watched her best friend
mourn the loss of the souled vampire for so long, that she had finally realised
that Buffy had meant what she had said at the end. That she truly loved Spike.
Willow had learned the hard way that if an opportunity was offered for love,
then it had to be grabbed. The redheaded Wiccan knew that Buffy would be
ecstatic. She had another chance with Spike. Never once in her ruminations did
Willow feel envious for her friend; she missed Tara but knew that eventually
they would be together again. It was Buffy’s chance now though… She wouldn’t let
Kennedy spoil that through her jealousy. Kennedy’s voice broke through her
stunned thoughts.
“What?
No…” Kennedy lied. She was not going to let Buffy get near a vampire again
unless it was for staking. ‘Freak of nature! She so doesn’t deserve to be a slayer,
let alone the head slayer and also on the Council board. I should have been
invited to sit on the Council…’ she thought resentfully.
Willow
gasped in shock as she inadvertently heard everything Kennedy had been
thinking. It was a new aspect to her powers that sometimes Willow wished she
never had received. It had lead to awkward discoveries as well as painful ones
such as this! Kennedy’s jealousy and anger had made it easy for Willow to
inadvertently pick up her angry and envious thoughts. It was an insight into
the brunette’s mind that the reformed Wiccan hadn’t wanted.
“Freak
of nature?” Willow repeated.
Kennedy’s
cheeks flushed red, not with embarrassment, but with anger at being caught.
“I
asked you a question? You think Buffy is a freak? Because …”
Before
Willow could finish, Kennedy interrupted her. “She is sick! He’s a vamp and he
tried to rape her and still they slept together that last night. It’s
disgusting! She’s supposed to stake them, not let them stake her,” Kennedy
added crudely as she tried to slip past her stunned lover.
Willow’s
pale fingers wrapped firmly around Kennedy’s arm. Stopping her from flouncing
out of the room. “Let go of me!”
“First
of all, it’s none of your business what happened between Buffy and Spike and,
for the record, nothing happened that night. Secondly, he’s back and you take
it upon yourself to not tell Buffy or me?” Willow was staggered at Kennedy’s
duplicity.
Kennedy
shrugged off Willow’s hand. “Well, it’s not like it matters now ‘cos I know you’ll
go running to Buffy and blab!”
As
she left the room, Willow’s voice followed her out, “And you wonder why Giles
didn’t want you on the board of directors… Well, sweetie, what you just tried
to do is why. He doesn’t think you are capable of thinking of others!”
Willow
collapsed to her knees and began to sob. She was curled up in the same spot,
crying, when Buffy had come to get her for patrol. The blonde had eventually
managed to calm her friend down and Willow stuttered out two words that would
change all their lives.
“Spike’s
alive!”
Buffy
had disappeared the next day, causing a flurry of anxiety both in London and
LA. The next day the tiny Slayer had stalked into Angel’s office and back into
Spike’s arms with barely a glance at her first love, who watched their reunion
with a mixture of horror and jealously.
Spike
recalled her first words. They were imprinted on his mind for all eternity.
Buffy had gazed up at him with tear-filled hazel eyes.
“Spike
I meant it! That day in the Hellmouth... I love you!” She pressed her shaking hand to his mouth. “Shh… I’ve not
finished. I love you, Spike, come home with me.”
And
he had. Without any hesitation. He had even managed to not smirk too much at
the expression on his Grandsire’s paler than normal face.
Present
day:
Spike
grinned again. He hardened slightly at the memory of her soft form crushed
against his for the first time since the night he had held her in his arms in
her basement in Sunnyhell. The night before he had burned up saving the world.
He
thrust his hands into his duster pockets, glad that he was able to finally do
so.
When
he had been incorporeal during his tenure and Wolfram and Hart, the blond
vampire had barely managed to keep a grasp on his sanity. It had only been the
fumbling kindness of Fred that had kept him going. Suppressing his fears under
a veneer of arrogance and vintage snarkyness, Spike had managed to keep going,
through sheer tenacity. Until he was finally able to touch, smell and taste,
thanks to the mysterious box he received in the post. Finally, he could touch.
He suppressed a shudder at the memory of what he had first touched. ‘Soddin’
hell, mate, Harmony? What the buggery hell were you thinking?’
“Spike
what you thinking about?” Buffy unconsciously echoed his thoughts with her
innocent question. She smiled tentatively at the black-clad vampire. The Slayer
was still unused to having him by her side and back in her life.
“What
a nit I was when I finally got my body under control,” Spike answered with a
sheepish smile.
“You
mean jumping Harm?” Buffy eyes twinkled mischievously with only a faint hint of
anger. She grinned at the open-mouthed look that Spike gave her.
“What…How…When…”
Spike asked.
Buffy
laughed softly at Spike repeating something Xander had once said, years ago in
Giles’ flat. “Angel called me after we landed. He wanted me to know exactly
what I was getting into with you.”
Spike
snarled. “Yeah, I bet he did! Soddin’ Poof! Bet he couldn’t resist sticking his
oar in!” He twirled and began pacing, his duster flowing behind him, muttering
under his breath about eunuchs, jealous that he couldn’t have a go and how
gelled wonders should keep their mouths shut.
Buffy
stepped into his path and stopped him gently with her hands. “Hey!” She cupped
Spike’s chin in her hand and forced the embarrassed vampire to look her in the
eye. “It’s in the past. Well, the recent past.” She pulled her drinking face
and then grinned at Spike, wrinkling her nose cutely at him. “I sorta get why
you did it…’Cos I’d be power freaked about not being able to touch anything.”
“Wot’s
that got to do with me shagging that bint?” Spike was unable to resist asking.
“Spike,
you’re a sexual creature. I would guess that the first thing you’d do was check
that everything was working.” Buffy grinned slyly at the pole-axed vampire. Her
face clouded slightly. “But if you ever touch that ditz again, I will cut it
off!” She squeezed her hands on his shoulders. Buffy had tried to be grown up
about the Harmony incident and she had managed, mostly... But the blonde woman
needed to make a point to her lover about his idiocy immediately after his
re-corporialisation She would probably have even more fun making the point than
he would.
Spike’s
hands dropped to his crotch. “No need to Bobbit me, luv! I’ll not be going near
anyone again in my unlife ‘cept for you, my heart!” He titled his chin down and
gave her a sloe-eyed look, his tongue curling against his teeth. Buffy tried to
stop herself from getting aroused and failed miserably. Spike sniffed the air
and smirked at her. “I am sorry, pet, I really am. I’ll let you do anything to
me to fix this.”
Buffy
eyed him speculatively. “Anything?” Her voice was husky as images of her
vampire chained to their bed flitted through her mind.
“Yeah,
pet, anything…” Spike tongue slipped past his teeth and ran along his full
lower lip. “I’ve been a bad, rude man,” he whispered. Leaning forward, he
pressed an apologetic kiss to her pouting mouth. “I’m sorry,” he muttered against her lips.
“I’ll
forgive you, eventually, but, Spike, Harmony?” Buffy grimaced slightly.
“I
was insane… I know and I’m sorry, luv.” Spike kissed her again, hoping that she
would forgive him this one more time.
Buffy
huffed slightly and snuggled her head under his chin. “You know, I had Willow
check you for vamp cooties after Angel called and told me.”
Spike
chuckled. “Vamp cooties? That’s a new one!” He pressed a kiss on the top of her
head, inhaling Buffy’s sweet scent and imprinting it on his senses. “I’m sorry
that Peaches told you, he needn’t have done that… I would’ve told you.”
Buffy
wrapped her arms around his waist. “I know, but I guess he wanted to protect
me.” She mentally rolled her eyes, wondering when Angel would realise she could
look after herself. ‘At least Spike knows when to help and when to back
off…’
“Yeah,
I bet he did!” Spike snarled as he held his girl closely to his chest. “Protect
you right back into his arms,” he growled jealously. Spike was still seething
over his Grandsire’s meddling. He grinned viciously at the memory of pounding
Angel to a paste. ‘Pity it was Mountain Dew though…’ Shaking off his
angry thoughts, he kissed Buffy on the temple. “I guess me beating the crap
outta him might have put the Poof into a snit, huh? As well as you wantin’ me
to frost your cookies.” Spike leered down at his Slayer.
“Eww…
Gross, Spike!” Buffy thwapped him gently on the chest and rolled her eyes at
him. “Come on, this patrol is a bust. Let’s get home!” Spike looked over at his
tiny soul mate and smiled. Willow had told him that Buffy had taken one look at
London and had fallen in love with the city, she had finally found somewhere to
call home. She was gradually acclimating to being a Londoner and was a happier
woman for the change.
“Home,”
Spike echoed. One simple word that filled his heart with complete joy. “Yeah,
let’s get home.”
The
two warriors slipped between the old tombstones and mausoleums and headed for
the Victorian wrought iron gate. Tld cld cemetery in North London was their
main hunting ground, unless Giles pointed them in a different area. It was
filled with history and the unfortunate connection with the Dracula mythology
made it a prime place for vampires to hunt and gather.
On
this night, it was misty and the shadowy tombstones covered in ivy and statuary
loomed out of the mist. It was a beautiful place, especially at night. During
the day, it was a Mecca for tourists as they hunted out various well-known
graves and went on the Dracula tours. It was all a source of constant amusement
for Spike and Buffy.
Spike
slipped the key that the warden had given Giles months ago, into the ornate
lock and the gate opened with a screech. Buffy slipped through the gate and
trailed her fingers over his hand.
“Come
on, I think you said I could do anything I wanted to you…” She tossed a teasing
look over her shoulder and jogged down the street.
Spike
groaned and reached down to adjust himself in his tight jeans. He pulled the
cemetery gate shut and locked it. Glancing back through into the famous
cemetery, he rolled his eyes. ‘You’d think Highgate Cemetery would offer up
something a bit more interesting than a couple of Drac wannabes and a rabid
squirrel... I mean, come on, that’s the most action we’ve gotten tonight… so
far!’ Spike sprinted after his ladylove. “Honestly, how many idiot vamps
need to recreate Drac’s silly games…” His voice echoed down the street and he
heard Buffy laugh at his grumbles in the distance.
Reaching
the end of the road, he stood at the junction and scanned the Gothic gatehouse
in front of him. Spike paused and shook his head. When Buffy had brought him
here, Spike had laughed.
