Xander tapped his fingers against the keyboard. "Okay, I have the vampires under control, I don’t know what that robed figure is planning, but it can wait for..."

Xander paused as he realized he was alone in the room. It was like when he had first appeared in wherever here was, a poorly lit version of the Sunnydale library. “Buffy? Will? Tara?”

He looked back at the computer and saw a new message: Applying Patch. Please Wait.

"What? A patch? Like the system is being updated?”

Desire Patch Downloading Now

"What the fuck?” Xander exclaimed. “I thought this was some kind of all powerful system. Changes can just be made to how it works?"

Yes

Xander paused in shock for a moment, he had not been expecting a reply, "Wait, you can hear me?"

Obviously.

"Why weren't you talking to me when I started? There was so much stuff that confused me!"

Because ...

It was funny.

"Funny? I'm trying to save the world!"

Yeah, well I get bored. Making universes isn't easy.

"But you could have been helping me!"

Hey, how was that Willow sex? Good right? Looking for some more? You know, I could make a few small changes and this game would be nothing but guys. Actually, nothing but male vampires. Should I load that up now?

Xander stayed quiet. He had learned to try and not antagonize all power entities.

Well, he had at least learned that lesson when sex was on the line.

Good, don't mess with the literal deus ex machina.

"Could you tell me what the patch is going to do? Please."

I guess it wouldn't hurt. We're expanding the desire system. Try and even things out. Oh, a bunch of other changes as well, have fun finding those.

Xander took a few deep breaths. "Thank you."

Hey, you can be polite. Let me give you a bit of help. There will be new characters coming on turn four and six. How about I let you know who they will be?

"That would be very helpful."

You know what, how about I kick an extra 100 Mojo your way? To make up for the system changes?

"Really, that would be awesome."

Haha! No. I'm actually giving those points to your opponent right now. You should see the monster he is stocking up points to buy, it is totally going to mess you up. Have fun watching the world get destroyed. Fucking with you is the only fun I've had in the last 30,000 years so I don't think I'm going to get tired of this.

“Fucking computer,” Xander cursed.

“What do you have against the computer?” Willow asked.

Xander looked up and saw the library back to how it had been. Willow, Tara, and Buffy were all staring at him. “Nothing, just, you know, frustrated.”

“Okay, well let me know if you need any help.”

Xander nodded his head and looked back to the computer, it was back to the game screen. Though this time it had some information:

The following characters will arrive on turn four:
Joyce, who will like you
Dawn, who will dislike you

On Turn six:
April, who will be neutral

Desires have been expanded!
Buffy has gained the Nice desire!
Tara has gained that Hot Bod and Gold Digger desires!
Fred has gained the Fame Slut desire!
Veruca has gained the Need to Laugh desire!

“You can’t just go around adding desires to people like that,” Xander muttered. “Well, I guess you can, because you’re a reality manipulating computer, but it still seems kind of weird.”

Before he worried about the characters in play though, Xander took a moment to see what new characters would be introduced. Joyce and Dawn, they could be helpful, though it would be a bit weird to have Dawn dislike him. April?

“Does anyone remember an April?” Xander asked.

“Wasn’t that the robot sex bot that Warren made?” Buffy suggested.

“Oh yeah, sorry, random memory,” Xander replied. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was going to do about a sex bot coming into the game, but he had a few turns until he had to worry about it.

He clicked continue and moved to the game board. The first thing he looked at were the cards his opponent had. Snyder had an ability that lowered the value of student grades. He still wasn’t sure what grades did, but that didn’t sound good. Vampire nest was simple and increased the number of vampires that came into play every turn.

“Not a worry, I have a Slayer on my side,” Xander stated.

He then looked to the cards. Fireball relied on magic and his opponent currently had none. Speed Up made something happen faster. Friendzone, he was already familiar with that, but it looked like it needed to be in play for three turns before it could have an affect. Blood Lust strengthened vampires, but again needed a magic user.

Party Break was the only one that really worried him. It said it could remove a character from his party, but the closer they were to him the harder it would be. It also had to be in play for two turns to take an affect.

“I guess I’ll just have to see what he plays,” Xander muttered as he looked to his allies.

Buffy’s stress was a high 133. She also had the trait moody which increased her stress by 10% every turn. Her new desire of Nice though greatly increased her attraction toward him. Her grades were also currently a D. There was also a message: Buffy’s stress is above 100, she may not take unique actions. Buffy’s stress is above 125, she may not train. Buffy is currently suffering a 33% penalty to her combat score.

Sex interactions with Tara had gotten a little easier, he had improved his body and she had the Hot Bod desire, though getting to a committed relationship was even more difficult. Her stress wasn’t that high, but her grades had dropped to a B-.

Willow was unchanged, her stress was low and she had an A+.

Xander clicked on himself and saw that he had an experience point to spend, ‘Must be from fighting those vamps’. He took a moment to buy himself a level of Warrior. Maybe he could be at least a slight help to Buffy next time.

Also, he just liked the thought of being the fighter instead of comic relief, even if it was a momentary fantasy.

He then clicked on a screen that he hadn’t used before, the improve base options:
10: Improve Athletics Equipment
8: Improve Combat Equipment
20: Get More Books
10: Improve Magic Facilities
18: Find More Places to Hang Out

He had four levels in research, the get more books option he had taken early, but zero in everything else. Stress was his big worry at the moment, he could see how it was affecting Buffy and he wasn’t sure if there were even more penalties than he was being told.

He bought the first level of ‘find more places to hang out’. The cost changed to 20 and he bought the second level as well.

He took a moment to survey the board. The vamps were under control and his opponent had a fairly weak hand. At least Xander hoped it was weak and there wasn’t something he was missing. What he needed was to get his party stronger and deepen his connection.

He chose Tara and saw that there was a new options, ‘Go on a Date’, it had better rewards, but cost more Mojo. Xander kept it simple and chose Flirt again.

He immediately went back to her screen and saw that the basic relationship cost had dropped to 10. He clicked on it as well.

“Hey, you getting work done or having fun,” Tara said as she came up and wrapped her arms around him from behind.

Xander looked to Willow, but she just glanced back as if nothing was happening, “A little bit of both, I think.”

“Keep at it then,” Tara said as she kissed him on the cheek.

Xander sat for a few moments quietly. ‘I’m going to have sex with Tara,’ he thought. He sometimes got caught up in the game that he forgot that he was actually going to experience things.

‘Focus,’ Xander told himself.

He still needed to work on his party. He clicked on party actions and looked to the study options:
0: Casual Study: A light study session, each party member improves their grade by 1 level and gains 5 stress.
6: Normal Study: A study session, grades will go up 2 levels and stress by 12.
12: Intense Study: An intense study session, grades go up a full letter grade, but stress increases by 30.

The cost for the higher levels was very low, Xander remembered that the study buddy trait that Tara and Willow had made it easier, but he was more concerned with the stress. 30 points of stress sounded like a lot, so instead he just took the normal study option.

The studying got him thinking about books. He clicked over to the Vampires card and looked at the one option other than the fights:
3: Research Enemy Weakness - Your party will research the enemy, looking for weaknesses that they might have.

Again, very cheap. If vampires nest was going to come into play, it would probably help to know more about what he was going to face, so he selected the option.

The last thing he need to do was work on his party’s stress. So he went back to party options and looked to the ‘Hang Out’ section:
0: Hang Out: Have fun at one of Sunnydale's many fun spots with their guaranteed cemetery view. Will lower stress of all party members by 13 and 5%.
20: Amazing Night Out: Have an amazing gathering with your friends. Will lower stress of all party members by 23 and 10%.
70: Legendary Time: Have an amazing gathering with your friends. Will lower stress of all party members by 46 and 20%.

He had the points and, being there was no reason not to go big, took the have a legendary time option. With that taken care of he clicked on end turn.

He saw one last message appear on the screen: Hey, buddy, you know the story doesn’t always have to be told from your character’s perspective. You’ll find this interesting, I’m sure.

End Note: The new characters coming in, and the desires, were determined by a random system, but I allowed rkimmelerre to "roll" the random numbers as frequently as he wanted. There were a lot of other possibilities that could have occurred.
