Hostage
Caleb looked around the room at the mess and dead Bringers, “Well, its not hard to know who did this and took her.” He said. “Once she wakes up she’ll come back. She won’t stay with them. Annabelle has proven her loyalty to you, you’ve done well with her.” “Its not exactly a publicly known fact that she's with child yet.” Caleb said, “There hasn’t exactly been time for announcements of that nature.” “They won’t hurt her, not unless she makes herself known as a threat to them. It’s one of the major flaws of being a good guy. No fun.” The creature said. “Getting her back ain’t gonna be no easy feat with that witch keeping her hidden.” Caleb said. The First turned and starred at him. “Are you worried about her Caleb?” It asked, “You’re beloved wife carrying your unborn child?” He clinched his jaw not responding more then answering the question. “I’d hate to think she’s going to get between us and our plans.” “Of course she ain’t.” Caleb said irritated at the suggestion. “But last time I checked, I had the notion, she’s part of those plans. A rather large part, as she is a hub of gathering power from both sides.” “And if you hadn’t been such a hypocritical male and knocked her up again she wouldn’t have been pushed to her breaking point so quickly.” It countered. Caleb looked at it, “Are you sayin’ that her bein’ with child is workin’ against us?” “It already has. She’s questioning everything, and wanting to pull away from us rather then accept her position.” It snapped at him, “Every other contingency was accounted for, but thanks to you the hormone and estrogen levels rushing through her veins are bringing out all those qualities that you tend to despise in women so very much.” “Belle ain’t like that.” Caleb said. “Of course she is Caleb, open your eyes.” It said in a stern tone, “You’ve treated her like a woman since before you slipped that stolen band of silver on her finger. You heard her yourself, Caleb. It’s not me she’s followed, its you.” It responded. “I’m her husband.” He said, “She does what I say. As she always has.” Caleb shook his head and turned raising his voice now as well, “I’m a tad big confused here, when did we suddenly lose any faith in Annabelle that she has earned these past years.” “Since we had to begin sedating her to keep her in check, and now she is in the hands of the enemy.” The First said. “You sound like a jealous woman and I’m finding that disturbin’.” Caleb starred at it, “What is goin’ on here? Have you been in that form to long your starting to act like one?” “Don’t be ridiculous. You know full well I don’t feel anything. I just don’t want to lose all your focus like she has.” It snapped. Caleb narrowed his eyes slightly, “I hate to be somewhat of a heretic, but I may have to remind you, you can’t take corporeal form. You need us.”Trapped
“This isn’t home.” Annabelle said taking another step back, “What do you want?” “Willow, she seems disorientated. Is that the spell or the drugs that were used on her?” Giles asked. “It’s the drugs she was given and being moved while she was unconscious didn’t help.” Willow replied. “How long until they wear off . . .” Buffy started to ask but it seemed that a question was still unanswered. “I’M STANDING RIGHT HERE!!” Annabelle shouted. “Don’t talk about me like I’m not.” “Annabelle . . .” Willow said gently, “Do you remember us? You spend time with us a few months ago. Before your son was born.” “The Slayers, the Vampire, the Witch, the Potentials . . . How could I not?” She said still looking extremely skittish and ready to run. “Only not as many of you as there was before.” Her behavior was very strange, nothing like it was before. She was like a scared rabbit caught in the headlights. Giles moved slightly crossing his arms and she almost jumped up the wall picking up the nearest thing she could swing with if she needed to. Everyone held up their hands trying to show no one meant her any harm to keep her calm. “I want to go home.” She said starring at all those around her. “You don't’ really have a home to go back too. You’ve been moving around for years.” Faith said. “Caleb is my home. I want to go back to him. Now.” She said moving away trying to keep the same amount of distance between her and everyone else in the room as they were carefully moving in on her a little bit. “I can’t let you do that Annabelle.” Buffy said, “Even if this wasn’t an apocalypse situation. Letting you go back to him, in your condition, would be wrong. You aren’t thinking straight.” “Buffy.” Giles said thinking she was being far to harsh to fast when Annabelle was in such a confused state. “You can’t keep me from him. He’s my husband.” Annabelle said. “What about your baby?” Spike asked breaking in pulling her attention towards him. “Him and the First took your son away from you. Do you really think they’ll let you hold on to this one when it’s born?” “The world will be different by then.” She answered. “You’ll all be gone. Then we can be a family. It won’t need us like this anymore.” “He didn’t start abusing you because the world was changing. He did it because that’s the sort of man he is.” Giles said, “He’s killed so many young women . . . He will eventually kill you too.” “That’s not true.” She said. “You don’t know him like I know him. He always comes to get me, always makes things better after something bad happens.” “The bad things happen because he orders them too, Annabelle. To make you trust him, to make you believe that he protects you and is the only one who can save you.” Buffy said. “He is the only one who can save me. He’s the only family I have left.” Annabelle said in a soft tone. Almost as if not believing it or trying to convince herself of it anymore. “You don’t understand.” “We do, Annabelle. I promise you we do.” Buffy said, “More then you realize. But you have to wake up from this dream, this nightmare he’s put you through since the First recruited him. Otherwise you won’t be able to protect yourself, or to protect your baby.” She was quiet a moment and seemed to stare off into space as tears welled in her eyes. Closing them a moment she tried to push down all the emotions and thoughts she’d been having for sometime now. “I’m not strong like they are. I don’t have a chance against them. At least if I do what they say, then I’ll be allowed to stay . . . Maybe . . . .” Annabelle paused not even knowing where she was going with that thought before she said it. Buffy stepped closer as Annabelle looked towards her. She wasn’t backing up anymore, it was more like she was bracing herself in a stance so she wouldn’t run away or fall again. “You are one of us Annabelle. Because of their plans, because of their actions, they make you powerful. There is no question where the Slayer line will go if Faith and I fall. You have to be willing to stand up for yourself or they win. They’ll continue to use you up until there is nothing left and then Caleb will get rid of you because you won’t be needed anymore or have anything left to give.” “You can’t know that . . .” She said her voice ghostlike now, her words almost hollow like she didn’t even know why she was saying them. “I do know it, and you know it too. The things you’ve seen, the things he’s done, you know that you’ll be next. You’ve done everything he’s said from the beginning, and took care of him no matter what. But he hasn’t treated you better as time has gone on, things have only gotten worse. There is no ‘getting better’ while your with him.” The Slayer said. “You have to let go of that dream. Caleb isn’t the man you hope and wish he was. He never will be. It isn’t just you anymore you have to worry about. It’s your baby. You have the power to protect this one, if you don’t want them too they can’t take it away.” Buffy stepped close to her as Annabelle’s eyes never moved from her. “Don’t leave your child alone in the world, for someone like Caleb to enter into their lives and treat them like he’s treated you.”Two Way Mirrors
Annabelle stood with Buffy and Faith with her arms wrapped around herself looking extremely embarrassed. “What’s wrong?” “I’ve never worn pants before.” She said, “Or a shirt like this with such short sleeves. It’s . . . Indecent.” “That’s Caleb talking,” Faith said walking over to her wrapping her arm around her pulling her closer to where she and Buffy had been standing. “You are shockingly gorgeous for a girl who had a kid just a few months back. Caleb’s just wanted to keep you from being seen for the beautiful girl you are.” “There’s nothing wrong with what your wearing, Annabelle.” Buffy said, “It’s actually pretty conservative for our little gang, and you can’t learn to fight in a dress. You need to be free to move without getting tangled up and hyperventilating in long sleeves and floor length skirts.” Annabelle sighed and gave a nod putting her arms down next to her sides trying to adjust to the feeling. “Now, we’ll start with the basics but you’ll learn fast. You have an advantage we didn’t when we first started out. You’ll probably be the most prepared potential ever without a watcher.” Annabelle took the stance that she was showed as Buffy and Faith began her instruction. Above them in the shadows on the second floor landing, they were being watched in silence when they began to spar. Annabelle might have been hidden by the spells that the witch had cast, but Buffy and Faith were not. The First stood with Caleb out in the Vineyard looking up at the full moon. “I saw it myself, Caleb. I’ve been watching them. They’ve been training her for the past two weeks and she’s changed. They aren’t teaching her anything at this point, they’re just bringing to the surface past centuries of knowledge and experience from the Slayer line. She’s not the wilting flower she was when they took her.” The First half smirked, “I doubt you would even recognize her now.” “I don’t accept that. I only see this as a good thing.” Caleb said. “How do you figure that?” The creature asked. “She’s being trained by the Slayers themselves. She had no trainin’ when she left here how was she supposed to learn to fight and wield that power when she finally got it? All that knowledge they’re uncoverin’ from within her will only work for us in the end.” Caleb walked around the room his hands clasped behind his back. “Once again I say, she isn’t ‘your belle’ anymore.” It replied. “And she is gaining their power already she’s almost knocked them through cinderblock walls. A lot of pent up anger she didn’t know she had.” “But it’s not just the Slayer’s power. It’s your power too. The power of evil given to her through me. That side hasn’t had a chance to be awakened yet, the Slayers have monopolized her trainin’ and time.” Caleb explained. “Don’t count her out just yet. Those Slayers have never been taught their proper place. Annabelle has.” He was quiet a moment before he turned towards the First, "Let me see her." It turned and looked at him, "What happened to letting the Slayer's complete her training first before bringing her back?" "She sleeps don't she? I'm assuming that hasn't changed." The First looked at him, "You can do it, you've done it before. Let me see her." The first looked at him half a moment before smiling. "Then it seems it's time for bed."To Be Continued . . . .
