Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: A big shout out to my beta bubbysbub whose support and grammar skills are a huge help in keeping the fic going..
Feedback: Please, please, please. I crave it
Part: 9/?
Distrubution: Ask and you will receive
Warnings: M/M/M relationship, strong language and mention of death for this chapter. Attention all cannon nazis (of which I am one, I hate it when people have Xander sleeping in the basement before Season 4) I realise that I go against cannon with something in this chapter, what can I say, I felt like it.
Reviews: Daeomae - Thankyou so much for reviewing and letting me know that someone was still reading and enjoying this. Lindsey, Lilah and Darla will start plotting away very soon. As for Glory's arrival, the Scoobies don't know what we know but attention is being drawn in the right direction. You'll just have to keep reading to see what happens next.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games and a big thanks to Buffyworld.com for making available transcripts of every episode of both Buffy and Angel. Fighting For Survival is nominated at the Forbidden Awards.
Chapter Nine
Angel quickly scanned the disturbing article looking for any reason why it wasn’t just some human who had it in for mentally disturbed people. He soon found what he was looking for.
“The patients who were all admitted into any one of three LA hospitals were found with a phlegmy-foul substance in their mouth and their cause of death is deemed to be asphyxiation. Authorities have not yet linked anyone to the deaths but sources revealed that they are looking at disgruntled ex-staff.” Angel read.
“Why has this happened now? I have never heard of this type of thing before. It is also very strange that this happened in LA just after you fled here from a crazy-causing unidentified demon.” Wesley observed.
“Hey, why is it our fault, it might have been purely coincidence?” Xander snapped back offended. Wesley immediately realised his mistake and raised his hands in a placating gesture.
“No I wasn’t fixing blame, I was merely observing that it seemed to be a little much to be a coincidence. If anyone has an alternative theory as to why this suddenly happened last night I would love to hear it.” Wesley didn’t want to offend anyone, especially the people from Sunnydale towards who he had acted like such an ass in the past. Willow chose this point to join the conversation.
“Tara and I were up on the roof last night when we noticed a meteorite flash across the sky and land somewhere in LA. We didn’t tell anyone then because we didn’t think anything of it, I mean who thinks meteorite and immediately jumps to dead crazy people.” Willow felt Tara’s hand squeeze hers lending support and reminding her not to babble. “Anyway, with the deaths it could have something to do with the meteorite considering nothing has been said in the news about it.” Willow noticed the disbelieving looks she was receiving from those around her and amended her statement. “Okay so not extremely likely but it’s just as valid a theory as the ‘its-our-fault’ one.”
“I never said…” Wesley began before Angel gestured for him to stop.
“Its okay Wes, what we need to do is research this, you can look into both your theories while I’m going to go out and see if I can track this thing.” Angel hated how insecure Wesley could get as soon as someone so much as vocalised a doubt. However, he could also understand how the original Scoobies who hadn’t seen Wesley’s growth in the last couple of years could feel hostile towards him. Hopefully they all woke up soon and worked out that they needed to work together or Angel might start banging heads together.
“Before you do that bro, I need to talk to you about my cuz’.” Gunn reminded him.
“Okay Gunn shoot, what’s the problem?” Angel asked, sitting on top of the reception desk and pulling Spike in between his outstretched legs. Angel still couldn’t get over how far his unsouled childe went to protect a bunch of humans.
“Lestor my cousin, isn’t the smartest guy on the block and he said he would take a job as driver for a big time crew but now his getting cold feet as they are bringing in a vampire from Las Vegas.”
“Who’s the vamp?” Spike asked while idly tracing meaningless patterns on Angel’s thigh.
“Lestor couldn’t remember his name but he said it was something like Jee-don, or Joe-don..."
“Jaydon,” Angel stated matter-of-factly, sharing a significant glance with Spike who had turned round at the name.
“You know him?” Xander asked.
“I know of him.” Angel replied tight lipped and Spike tried to not react at the blatant lie. Angel stared into the confused eyes of his childe for a minute willing him to not say anything. Angel had every intention of telling Xander his history with Jaydon and explaining to Spike why he isn’t going to tell everyone, right now it would only complicate matters.
“What’s the job?” Spike asked changing the subject while he turned around from Angel. He wasn’t happy with the deception, but he would go along with his Sire’s wishes for now, but Angel had better tell Xander the truth in private. Bloody Darla, still stuffing everything up, even when she had been dead for these last five years.
“Takin' off some museum. Don't know which one."
“What are they after?" Cordelia asked becoming curious, wondering what pretties were in danger now.
“Something big. Supernatural. It's going down later this week, but Lestor’s supposed to meet the head honcho tonight, and if he don't show... well let’s just say he’s gotta show." Angel studied Gunn for a moment, he seemed incredibly calm and Angel realised that he had already formulated a plan.
“What’s your plan?” Gunn smiled and relaxed that Angel was going to at least hear him out. Gunn still hadn’t entirely gotten over my-boss-is-a-vampire thing. Gunn realised that in his mind he associated pushy, arrogant, I-know-what-is-best behaviour with vampires, especially evil vampires, and it tended to put him on edge.
“I go in on the meet as Lestor. The vampire is a problem though, he’s being picked up at the downtown bus midnight.”
“Why don’t I stake him then take his place, that way you have someone to cover your back if things go south?” Angel suggested.
“Isn’t Jaydon supposed to be flashy?” Spike asked, not pleased that Angel would be seeing the imbecile again.
“What? I can’t do flashy?” Angel asked and Spike just stared at him. “Its gotta be me, your hair can’t do ‘Rat Pack’ it’s still stuck in the 80s. I’ll borrow one of Xander’s shirts, they’re flashy enough.”
“Hey,” protested Xander though his heart wasn’t in it. He knew something else was going on between the two vampires and he wasn’t happy that they were leaving him out of it.
“Okay, this is what we are going to do tonight. Gunn and I will go to this meeting while Anya, Willow, Tara find out what it is they might be stealing. Xander, Cordelia and Spike do some reconnaissance about the psych patients, check out the meteorite if you want to but let Cordelia do all the asking. You two are supposed to be in hiding, and please be careful,” After gaining a nod from Spike, Angel turned his attention to Wesley and Dr Phillips. “Wesley more research on Glory, there has to be something somewhere on her, and keep an eye on Dawn. Dr Phillips do whatever you need to prepare for Joyce’s surgery, if you need or can’t find something please talk to Wesley. Now I need to go change.”

Xander sat on the bottom step of the stairs leading to the upper levels in the foyer of the impressive hotel. How he would love to have a year to restore it to its former glory. Right now though, he had other things on his mind. He was remembering the conversation he had had with Spike just after Angel had left the hotel that was well past half an hour ago now. When they were upstairs while Angel was changing, Angel had told Spike to fill him in. Before Xander could ask what they needed to fill him in on, Angel had kissed them both hungrily and then quickly left, silent but bereft of his swirling black coat.
Spike had then sat him down and told the story of Jaydon, Xander was shocked that Darla had had another childe after Angelus; there had been nothing in the watcher’s diaries about it. Xander had thoroughly researched Darla after she had killed Jesse and he had found everything the Watcher’s council knew about Darla. According to Spike, after Angelus was cursed and Spike and Drusilla had been kicked out as well, which happened a while after, Darla went solo for a while, but she wanted another Angelus. A dark creature that owed her everything, Angelus as he was before Spike was turned. Xander didn’t know all the details but knew that Darla had resented and hurt Spike for his monopolisation of Angelus’ time.
Spike theorised that Jaydon ultimately disappointed Darla and she dumped him somewhere before travelling to the Master in Sunnydale. Jaydon and Angel had only met once and it hadn’t been pretty. Xander hoped that Angel could dust Jaydon quickly and put to rest any negative feelings he had about this whole affair.
“Xan, hurry up. We’re going to have a look at that meteorite,” Cordelia called out and Xander quickly ran out after them.

Angel stalked through the bus station, he could feel a fellow Aurielian vampire close by and he stalked towards Jaydon. At last he had a reason for killing his replacement. The last of Darla’s legacy would be gone, nothing left for him to remember of her. Angelus had never loved her; he had worshipped the ground she walked on but never love. Angelus, and even Liam for that matter, had known nothing of love until a young poet by the name of William Pratt had come along.
Angel peered round the corner and watched as Jaydon combed his hair; yes still the same vampire, flashy and arrogant as hell. Well not after tonight. Angel sauntered round the corner and waited until Jaydon had turned to look at him, recognition flashing in those dark eyes.
“You?” he accused.
“Sorry doll, you’re on my turf.” Angel replied in an imitation of Jaydon’s accent before the intruder attacked. The fight was quick but brutal. Angel had only just staked Jaydon when he heard,
“Jaydon,” and turned to watch an ugly demon peer under the bus. ‘Silly sod, as Spike would say,’ Angel thought before he stepped forward and assumed the personality of the vampire who was now dust in the wind.

Darla was talking to Lindsey when the pain hit her. It felt so much more intense than when she was a vampire, she distantly thought. Then again she had only felt this once when she was a vampire and it had only been a favoured minion. She faintly heard Lindsey call her name and grab her arm but she was too caught up in the pain. One of her childer was dead, and it felt like her insides were being ripped out of her with hot pokers, and not in a fun way.
“Noooo,” she gasped, fearing Angelus had been taken away from her forever. Whoever it was had fallen within the city.
“Angelus,” she heard herself moan, but she was still consumed by the pain, if he had been further away when dusted the pain would have been dulled by distance.
Lindsey was immediately on the phone watching Darla warily wanting to help the seemingly fragile human. “I need to be patched in to the surveillance team following Angel,” he crisply ordered the woman at the service desk. He watched Darla double over as he was on hold. His feelings for her were becoming less than professional frighteningly quickly.
“Mr MacDonald?” A voice queried at the other end of the phone.
“Yes. I need to know the whereabouts and last actions of the target.” Lindsey answered all business.
“The target has just left the downtown bus depot in a Gurgahl demon’s car. Immediately before being picked up, he dusted an unidentified vampire, dressed in green pants, sunglasses and styled hair.”
Darla had been listening to the exchange as Lindsey had left the phone on speaker. She instinctively knew who the unidentified vampire was. Her only other childe, Jaydon. Darla was livid, how dare Angel kill what was hers. Oh, that boy was going to pay.

Willow surfed the Internet looking at the local museums for newly acquired, mystical artefacts. So far her search had turned up nothing. Wesley wandered in from the adjacent office.
“Nothing?” he asked knowing the answer already by the slump of the three ladies shoulders. “I wonder what is taking Angel so long he should have been back by now.” He mused, before he could continue Willow let out a triumphant shriek.
“Found it,” she exclaimed. “'On the third of this month, museum research department received the Shroud of Rahmon from a tomb recently unearthed by University of New Mexico archaeologists.'" Willow read while the others looked over her shoulder.
"Okay. Two words I don't like right off the bat: tomb and unearthed. People, you've got to leave your tombs earthed! Didn’t humans learn anything after Krakatoa exploded in 1883, seriously!" Everyone looked at Anya stunned for a moment before they turned back to the computer screen.
“Shroud of Rahmon. Have you ever heard of it, sweetie?" Tara asked Willow, brushing her hand through her lover’s red hair.
"I'm not big on shrouds. They're an after-you-die outfit." Willow tried to joke but it fell flat. She reflected that the jest would have probably worked best if Cordelia or Buffy had voiced it. Her heart clenched in remembrance of her friend’s senseless death. It wasn’t fair that Buffy had gone out that way.
"Get everything you can from the museum database,” Wesley’s voice broke through Willow’s thoughts, “I'll hit the books." Wesley had decided that he wasn’t going to find anything on this Glory, and it was obvious that the other’s needed help.

A brief time later Wesley had what he needed. It felt good to research something that was actually in the books. He walked into the outer office where the three former Scoobies were researching without any small talk; he immediately started reading what he had.
“The shroud was woven by the head priest, said to have been driven mad by the demon himself. Once Rahmon was defeated, the priest dyed the shroud with the blood of seven virgin women sacrificed on the first full moon. Then laid it upon Rahmon's body in order to prevent his resurrection."
"Why is it always virgin women who have to do the sacrificing?" Willow asked, annoyed for her gender.
“For purity, I suppose." Wesley answered absentmindedly, reading ahead.
“This has nothing to do with purity. This is all about dominance, buddy. A scorned woman once asked me to curse a village so they had to use a male body part for the sacrifice. The village was atheist like that." Anya demonstrated clicking her fingers, Wesley looked vaguely sick before he could pull himself together.
“The shroud supposedly absorbed Rahmon's power." Wesley was attempting to ignore Anya’s comments.
"So, he who has the shroud has the power. You said Rahmon was a drive-you-mad kind of fella?" Willow asked Wesley, she had always admired his knowledge and wished that she could be like that someday.
"Once in 1803 the shroud was removed from it’s casing," he replied.
"And yuckiness ensued?"
"Well, yes. The entire population of El Encanto went insane, mothers and children hacking one another to pieces, men roaming the streets like rabid dogs..." Wesley answered Willow matter of factly. He went to go on but Tara stopped him.
"I get the picture.” Willow suddenly stopped as a thought occurred to her.
“So in order to take his mind off the crazy unstoppable bitch named Glory, Angel goes after a box that makes you crazy."
"Worst case scenario, we warn Angel off it before they steal the shroud." Wesley was not worried about his boss when he was just attending a meeting.
"Just as soon as he comes back - unless of course - they're stealing it right now." Willow answered scared, the other two girls looked at her and then the three of them rushed out leaving Wesley alone.
“There is such a thing as a phone,” he called out but they were gone.
