Xander couldn't help but wince as Spike growling and screaming drifted down the road to where he and Gunn was. Something had obviously pissed the vampire off. Spike had entered the strange building twenty minutes ago. Five minutes into his arrival, the music and laughter had stopped.
"Wesley." Gunn mumbled in his sleep, curling up into a little ball.
"Dammit, Spike." Xander said, ignoring Gunn and choosing instead to pace up and down the street. "Hurry up."
A crash echoed down the street. Xander turned to see a body go flying out of the building's lone window. Glass sprayed across the ground as the figure rolled and righted it's self. Spike immediately began dusting off his precious duster, before turning on his heel and returning to Xander's side.
"Shit, what happened?" Xander demanded.
"Whore house." Spike replied. "Or drug house... Dance club... I don't bloody well know, but there were some crazy arsed things going on in there."
"What about Wesley?" Xander asked.
"Wasn't there." Spike said. "One of the dancers told me that some bloke named Ganymede took him to see his master."
"Well that's just great." Xander announced. "What in the hell are we suppose to do, Spike? We don't have a place to sleep. We have no money. Gunn is currently knocked out, for who knows how long. And Wesley, the only one of us that knew anything about this place, is missing. Not to mention Tara's disappearing act. We are screwed!"
By the time Xander was finished, his voice had become a dramatic yelping sound that resembled a panicking terrier dog. Spike winced and patted Xander on the shoulder in an attempt of comfort. "Look, pet, they told me Ganymede took him outside the city, towards the south-west. That's where we showed up, remember? There was that huge plain, and then some woods in the distance. I'll bet my next meal that Wesley is there."
"Well, okay then..." Xander frowned. "One problem. We don't have a boat to navigate the canal to get out of here."
"That can't be the only way in and out." Spike said.
"So, you're suggesting we start walking around that huge ass wall and search for a trap-door?" Xander asked slowly, before exploding. "Are you insane?"
"Oi." Spike said in protest. "I don't see you coming up with anything better."
"Hello!" Xander exclaimed. "Why don't we just go up to some of those soldiers at the dock and ask them to let us through?"
"You think that will work?" Spike snorted. "You're naive, pet."
"This place is huge, Spike. That wall -- no, those walls -- circle this entire city. It could take days to walk the perimeter." Xander informed him. "We need to talk someone into getting us out. Or giving us directions. Something, other than what those doped up idiots in there said, okay?"
"Fine! Whatever." Spike said, with a pout. Xander gave him a look that clearly stated he wasn't impressed. With a sigh, Spike walked over to Gunn and, using his vampire strength, easily tossed the muscular man onto his shoulder. "Where to, oh great one?"
"Funny." Xander stated, leading them out of the dark and stale street.
By the time they had walked past the drunken man muttering things about 'that squeaky fellow' and his 'large banana', Xander was willing to admit they were lost. That is to say, he was willing to admit it to himself, and possibly Gunn, but not to Spike. So, ignoring Spike's smirk, he lead them through a few more streets. Finally, as the sun was just touching the edges of the night sky, they reached what looked like a clean, reasonably located inn.
They entered to find the front room, with tables and chairs, empty, save for a lone girl washing the front counter. Spike quickly dumped Gunn into the nearest chair. The girl, who appeared to be around seventeen and owning a darker shade of skin than most of the natives, eyed them from the counter, scooting closer to what looked like a box that served as a register. Spike sent her a sneer, before turning to Xander.
"Right, so, now that we are here, how are we going to pay for a room?" Spike asked.
"Pay? Oh, right..." Xander started digging into his pockets.
"Pet, I don't think they'll take American dollars." Spike pointed.
"Dumb ass." Xander said fondly. "I just realized that they probably use gold coins and stuff here, so maybe something like jewelry will work as money."
"What do you have that's worth money?" Spike scoffed.
"Turn around." Xander ordered, his face flushing slightly. Spike narrowed his eyes and stood his ground. Xander gripped something tightly in his hand, glaring at the vampire, before giving a huge sigh. "Fine. It's nothing... Just a gift. Well, former gift. I'll have to buy you something else."
"Whoa! Hold it!" Spike ordered, before grabbing Xander's fist. They immediately began fighting back and forth, though it was obvious Spike wasn't using his full strength.
"Excuse me?" A soft voice asked. It was female with a strange accent, reminding Xander somewhat of the Middle East. They finally stopped their fighting, Spike now holding the item in his hand, and turned to look at the girl.
"Yeah?" Spike asked.
"I was wondering if you needed any help." The girl said in a no nonsense voice that had Spike grinning in amusement. Her dark eyes narrowed at him. "It's 12 for a room. Unless you have no money? We don't trade here."
"Cripes." Xander complained.
"Good thing, 'cause I want my pressie." Spike told him, opening his fist to see a necklace with a small railroad spike on the chain. He quickly slipped it around his neck and sent Xander a tiny smile. Xander beamed.
"Wonderful." The girl muttered to herself. "If you two are finished, can you explain what it is you want? I don't have time for this."
"So much for hospitality." Spike commented.
"You want hospitality? There's temple dedicated to Athena half of a mile from here. I'm sure they will be willing to take you in." She told him.
"No more temples!" Spike said, when Xander opened his mouth. Xander sent him a small frown, before turning back to the innkeeper.
"Is there anyway we can pay off a room, or maybe... Work for some money to buy some clothes?" Xander asked.
"What about him?" She nodded towards Gunn, who was on the verge of slipping off his chair, drool slowly sliding down his chin.
"Err... He's... With us?" Xander offered. The girl rolled her eyes.
"There are some broken cabinets in the kitchens." She told them. "Fix them, and I'll give you a room for tonight. My father will return from his meeting with the King's Order at daybreak tomorrow. You may speak with him then, if you wish to."
"Is he a member of the King's Order?" Xander asked.
"Your intelligence is as low as your clothing suggest." She chuckled. "No. My father went to speak with them about the rise in robberies in the area. But that is none of your concern. The kitchen is this way. By the way, my name is Dedi."
"Dedi?" Spike repeated.
"Yes." Dedi shot him a glare. "I'm Egyptian. One hopes this is not a problem."
"Spike, shut up." Xander ordered. Spike opened his mouth, but snapped it shut by the look that Xander sent him. "Watch Gunn? I'll take care of the cabinets. I don't trust you with any form of carpentry."
"Oi!" Spike said in reply, though he sat down in the chair next to Gunn. Xander rolled his eyes and followed Dedi out of the room. Spike let out an annoyed sigh, bordering on boredom, before kicking lightly at Gunn's foot. The dark man gave a small groan, before falling out of his chair and onto the ground with a solid thump.
"Spike! Leave Gunn alone!" Xander yelled from the other room. His voice was followed by the sound of a hammer against wood.
Spike grumbled to himself, before poking Gunn in the leg and watching with a smirk as Gunn's arm shot out to wave the vampire's foot away. Spike couldn’t help but do it a second time, though he shouldn't of been so shocked with Gunn's hand suddenly wrapped around his ankle. A pair of bloodshot eyes glared up at him. Gunn slowly released his leg and sat up, a small moan of pain echoing from his chest.
"'Bout damn time you woke up, Chuck." Spike announced.
"Don't talk so loud." Gunn mumbled, climbing up into the chair. "What happened?"
"Well, me and Xander got kicked out the temple. Our little witch is missing." Spike explained. "Oh, and you lost Wesley."
"What?!" Gunn exclaimed, jumping to his feet and ignoring the ache that pounded through his veins.
"It's not our fault." Spike defended. "We'll find him."
"But-!" Gunn started, before stopping with a heavy sigh. "It's my fault. I should have stopped him from going into the building."
"That and you shouldn't have gotten drunk." Spike agreed. Gunn sent him a look that clearly stated how much he wasn't helping. "Look, we'll get some sleep tonight, right? Then find a way to get to Wesley and the bloody bastard that took him."
"Who took him?" Gunn growled and Spike suppressed a grin. Gunn really did need to get laid, and quickly if Spike had anything to say about it. Of course, that meant finding Wesley.
"Someone named Ganymede." Spike replied. Gunn developed this look on his face. Determined and angry. "Don't be getting your knickers in a twist just yet, Chuck. We got to find the git first."
"Okay, I can wait." Gunn nodded. "So, what happened to Tara?"
"Don't rightly know." Spike said. "Thelsea kept going on about some presence in the temple. Xander and I could feel it, as well. So her and her little group of priestesses got together and prayed."
"Then what?" Gunn asked.
"Artemis, the bloody bitch." Spike grumbled. "Their goddess, apparently. She was annoying. Reminded me of the Slayer."
"Damn, man, that is annoying." Gunn agreed, wincing slightly.
"And praise Ra she is not here to hear you say such things." Dedi stated from the doorway where she had been apparently listening.
"Whatever." Spike shrugged. Gunn, however, stared at Dedi with wide eyes and his mouth hanging open. The girl fidgeted under his stare.
"Yes?" She asked in annoyance.
"A-" Gunn paused and took a gulp of air. "Alonna?"
