Author's Notes: Ok, this story has been rattling around in my brain since halfway through 'Common Ground'. This story is slightly AU. Basically, Dawn discovered that she could use her Key powers early on, and has been working with Tara to perfect her skills and Groo never showed up at AI. Also, Buffy isn't quite as hostile to Spike. In fact, they have a tentative friendship. I think those are about the only major changes. And, as in all my stories, Angel is Spike's sire because I simply refuse to believe anything else. Words in *'s are emphasized, words in 's are thoughts, words in ~'s are dreams, and words in ^'s are flashbacks.

Quor-toth
Stephen paused at the edge of a small creek, his eyesight easily cutting through the inky blackness of the night. He knew that Dawn was close. He had been able to sense her for the past three days. However, every direction that he traveled seemed to lead to another dead end. Finally, he had decided to go back to the original spot where he'd been aware of her presence and utilize some of his training.
Exhaling slowly, he relaxed his muscles and allowed focused his senses on the slight pull he felt. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open and a small smirk crossed his face.
"There you are, demon," he whispered, his own voice sounding loud to his ears. Quickly, he pulled his knife from its sheath and cautiously began making his way along the creek bed. As he walked, his mind began replaying the events that had led him to this hunt.
^ He slid the knife across her throat, staring into her frightened blue eyes the entire time. He was aware of his father urging him on and had felt a twisted sense of pride that he was finally able to prove himself.
However, before he was able to dig the blade deep enough in Dawn's smooth skin, a bright light had suddenly appeared, knocking him backwards. Jumping to his feet, he watched with wide eyes as the glow surrounded the terrified young woman. He gasped as a small rip began to form in thin air, blocking him from his intended prey. Through it, he was able to see a room, with two vampires in the residence, each male, yet with striking differences. Then, a female with dark brown hair had charged towards the hole. Finally, the intensity of the light was too much and both he and Holtz had been forced to avert their gaze.
Moments later, when he looked back up, the light had disappeared, as had Dawn. ^
Growling softly, the Miracle Child mentally berated himself for not just killing the girl when he had first met her. If he had, he wouldn't have to see the constant look of disappointment on his father's face.
Suddenly, he froze, his entire body tensing. Voices. He heard voices. Gripping the knife tighter, he moved stealthily towards the sounds. Once he was close enough to make out the shapes, he darted behind a large boulder, deciding that observing his enemies was the wisest course of action.
So, holding his breath, he watched as his targets came into view.
The young man's eyes widened as he instantly recognized the three people walking beside Dawn. It was the two vampires and the female that he'd seen through the portal! Narrowing his eyes, he watched as the small group stopped walking, each taking a seat wearily on the assortment of larger rocks.
Leaning forward slightly, Steven watched their interaction, trying to gauge where they had come from and who was in charge.

Angel stifled a groan as he eased himself into a sitting position. Muscles that he wasn't even aware that he had were aching. Of course, he wasn't certain whether that was because of the amount of walking they'd been doing over the past three days or the fact that he hadn't been able to sleep due to the pain in his heart.
Sighing, Dawn watched as the former Scourge of Europe's face darkened as he fell back into his pattern of heavy brooding. Concerned, she glanced at Spike and Dru. "He's doing it again," she whispered helplessly. "Help him, please."
Spike rolled his eyes. He didn't understand why the Nibblet cared so much about his poofy sire. The blonde was tempted to tell Dawn to just leave it be. However, he took one look into her tear-filled eyes and knew he had to do whatever he could to make her happy.
Taking an unnecessary breath, the chipped vampire turned to face his sire, his voice hard when he spoke. "Oi! Snap out of it, Peaches. S'nothing you can do to change it now."
Dawn frowned, giving the former Big Bad a dark look. "Gee, *thanks* Spike," she muttered. "*That* really helped. Why don't you hit him a few times, too?"
Spike growled softly, crossing his arms over his chest and pouting slightly. "No need to be rude, Little Bit. Not like I'm used to making people feel better. Evil, remember?" he grumbled.
"You used to make our daddy feel better, Spike. Don't you remember? All those nights in Paris--" Dru's soft voice was quickly cut off by an irritated Angel.
"That's enough, Dru," the souled vampire stated. "Dawn doesn't need to hear about such things." Glancing at Spike, he quietly added, "And neither do I." Standing, he turned away from the group, missing the look of pain that briefly flitted across the smaller man's face.
"It's ok!" Dawn exclaimed. "I'm sixteen, remember? You guys feel free to talk all you want!"
Spike forced his gaze away from his sire, looking at the girl he'd come to nearly consider his own. "Peaches is right. No need to bring up the past," he said shortly.
Dru sighed, watching as the only remaining members of her family put even more walls up between them. Forcing a small smile, she glanced at the teenager sitting beside her. "It's ok, dear. I'll tell you ever nasty detail some day," she promised.
The former Key smiled brightly, bouncing slightly. "Really? That's *so* cool!" She knew that she should be afraid of the vampiress. After all, the woman could kill her with a mere flick of her wrist. However, instinctively she knew that the once-insane Seer did not intend to hurt her. In fact, Dru had even saved her life the night before.
Dawn shivered as she thought back to the enormous demon that had attacked them. It had seemed to come out of nowhere, charging at them on all fours, slime oozing from its mouth much like slobber from a Saint Bernard.
At first, it had set its sights on both Angel and Spike. However, the moment that the teenager had begun screaming, it changed direction, heading directly for hShe She had skidded backwards, arms held up in self-defense, when suddenly a flash of dark hair and lace had tackled it. Dawn watched in amazement as Dru morphed into game face, sinking her fangs into the creature's side. She then withdrew them viscously, managing to rip out a large chunk of flesh in the process.
Whimpering, the Hell beast had run away, its tail tucked securely between its legs. Once the initial threat was over, Dru had approached Dawn, her human mask slipping back over her true face. Obviously concerned, she had checked the girl over for any injuries quickly. Finally convinced that the teenager was safe, the vampiress had then proceeded to lie beside her for the rest of the night, keeping a constant vigil.
To say that Dawn was puzzled by the woman's behavior would be an understatement. What had she done to evoke such obvious feelings of protection and loyalty? Shaking her head, she decided to think about it another time. Right now, she had to focus on pulling a vampire out of the throes of depression.
Rising to her feet, the young woman hesitantly approached Angel, gently placing a hand on his arm. "Please stop," she begged quietly, peering up into his face. "You can't change what happened. All you can do is focus on finding him and telling him the truth. Then, maybe you can both try to put this all behind you and start fresh."
Angel stared down at the girl, wanting desperately to believe what she was saying. However, he knew that it wasn't that simple. If what she had told him was true, which he had no doubt in his mind that it was, then it was highly possible is son was already filled with so much hatred that there would be no reaching him. Growling at the memory of betrayal, the souled vampire roughly pulled out of Dawn's grasp, his eyes flashing yellow.
Dawn gasped at the rage she saw in his eyes. Whimpering slightly, she took a step away from him, the memories of Angelus flashing before her eyes. True, she had never technically existed when Angel had lost his soul. However, the monks had planted memories of that dark time and they were still there, haunting her subconscious.
Spike and Drusilla both rose to their feet as the intoxicating smell of the girl's fear reached them. Moving as one, they approached their sire and the teenager. However, rather than helping to terrify Dawn even more, they flanked her on either side, glaring defiantly at Angel.
"Bad daddy, scaring her like that!" Drusilla admonished. "You leave her alone!"
Angel growled warningly at his elder childe. "Are you threatening me, Dru?" he asked.
The vampiress paled slightly, not missing the warning in the silky voice. She knew that her true sire, the Scourge of Europe himself, was close to the surface, fighting to break free. However, she was prepared to do whatever it took to protect the Slayer's sister. Therefore, forcing herself to hold her ground, she stared boldly up at the man who had created her. "Leave her alone," she replied icily.
The souled vampire took a step towards her, prepared to beat her into submission if necessary. Although logically he knew that he was giving his demon far too much control at the moment, he was almost to the point of not caring. The anger and helplessness that he had been feeling since his son had been kidnapped a few days ago was finally reaching its peak, and Angel was more than willing to let it consume him.
Suddenly, Spike stepped in between his irate sire and the woman he'd loved for more than a century. "She may not be telling you what to do, Angelus, but *I* am. You leave Dru and the Nibblet alone or I'll make you," he said calmly, preparing himself for the possible repercussions of his actions.
Snarling, Angel grabbed his favorite childe by the throat, lifting him off the ground. "You've forgotten your place, *William*. I think it's time I reminded you who is in charge. Why don't I show you?"
"Why don't you show me, instead?" a voice rang out through the darkness.
Startled, Angel dropped the blonde, spinning towards the sound. Standing a few feet away was a young man, a knife in his hand and an icy look on his face.
Dawn gasped, finally finding her voice. "Connor," she whispered. "Angel, it's Connor!"
The teenage boy's scowl quickly gave way to an evil smirk. "So, dad," he said almost pleasantly, "Did you miss me?"

LA
Lilah couldn't believe this was happening. What had started out as a wonderful night was quickly turning into a full-blown disaster.
Shaking her head of her mental moanings, she glared at the two men standing in front of her. "This is some kind of joke, right?" she asked. "You don't *really* expect me to allow *him* back in the building!"
Wesley fixed her with a stern look, forcing himself not to laugh at the shocked expression on her face. "I can assure you, Ms. Morgan," he replied calmly, "This is *no* joke. Moreover, the last time I checked he had a name. I believe it was Lindsey."
Lilah's scowl darkened at his condescending tone. "I *know* his name! Hell, I worked with him for years! I just can't believe that he would be foolish enough to return, or that you would be naive enough to bring him here and actually *think* that he was going to get past the front doors!"
Lindsey laughed, coming to stand beside Wesley. "I don't think you have a say-so in the matter, Lilah," he spoke up. "The simple fact is, you told the senior partners that you were going to bring them the infamous Wesley Wyndham-Price. Now, something tells me that if you go back upstairs without him, they are going to be less than pleased."
Glaring at her former co-worker, she briefly wondered what he would look like after a few hours of torture. "Go to hell, Lindsey," she snapped, knowing he was right. "I'll just tell them that *you* were part of the deal. They'll more than understand. Hell, they'll probably give me a promotion."
The young man shook his head, his smug smile never wavering. "Now, now Lilah. Whom do you think you're talking to? This is me, remember? I know as well as you do that you aren't going to get the chance to tell them anything," he replied.
Lilah sighed, briefly letting the mask of confidence that she normally wore slip. Finally, she decided to try to reach a compromise. "All right, this is what we're going to do," she stated. "I'm going to go back inside and gather up the paperwork. Then, I'll bring it out here for you to look over. After you've agreed to all of the conditions, Wesley and I will go back inside and *you* can go back to whatever rock it was you crawled out from under."
Exchanging looks with his 'attorney', Wesley shook his head. "No, I'm afraid that is unacceptable. If I were to leave Lindsey alone out here, anything could stumble across and and cause him harm."
The woman rolled her eyes, frustration filling her face. "Fine. He can wait inside, in the lobby!" she cried in exasperation.
Lindsey nodded. "That sounds like a plan"
Twenty minutes later, Lindsey had read through the forms that Lilah had given him. After making a show of pointing out several clauses that could be harmful to his 'client' and suggesting certain changes, the young man now found himself alone in the lobby, with only a busy secretary keeping a wary eye on him.
He watched with trepidation as Wesley followed his former co-worker to the elevators. Stepping inside, the former Watcher gave him a quick glance, silently telling him to continue with the plan.
Lindsey had to admit that he was impressed. So far, everything was working out exactly as the rogue demon hunter had claimed it would. Of course, now came the difficult part.
Slowly rising to his feet, the former lawyer held his briefcase tightly as he moved across the lobby, making a beeline for the restroom. He nodded politely at the young woman observing him from behind her desk. For an instant, he felt almost guilty. Lilah had informed the girl that it was her responsibility to make certain that he stayed out of trouble. Knowing that, he had no doubt that, if he succeeded in getting the book, the pretty blonde currently answering phones would find herself in a world of trouble.
Forcing himself to believe that fallacy, he entered the restroom, quickly locking the door behind him. Time to retrieve the book.
