Memories
Annabelle lay in bed, a saline drip in her arm and something else in the other. She didn't really ask questions, the Bringers couldn't answer her anyway but she knew they must have been there caring for her like this at Caleb's order. She looked at the ring on her left hand and slowly turned it around with her fingertips remembering when Caleb had put it on her finger at their wedding. It couldn't really be called much of a wedding, more like a short ceremony that was done in private by him with two witnesses. Caleb was charming, he had always had that way about him. His easy southern drawl and way of talking, the lyrical sound of his voice, the comfortable way he could make anyone feel upon first meeting, a perfect lure for his preferred prey. Annabelle was poor, from a poor family. There was an accident when she was only 4 or 5 years old that her parents, her two older brothers and a younger sister. Only she and her older sister, Elizabeth were left. Her sister Beth was just barely a year older, and was always watching out for her. Beth was the protective sister, while Annabelle was the more gentle soul of the two keeping her sister grounded and in high spirits. A day didn't go by when there wasn't a smile on Belle's face and she brought one to her older sisters as well. Having no family left, no relatives to speak of, they were taken in by various families in their church. Attended every church function, went every Sunday and were good God fearing Christian girls. When Annabelle was 7 or 8, it was the first time Caleb had come to their church parish. A young preacher, come from another parish just moving around trying to find his place in the world. No one knew to much about him. Just that he taught classes and spoke sermons and of course attended every church picnic. Every now and again he would disappear for a few months but then he would return always making a point to see Annabelle first thing. Then, one day her sister became sick. She had a headache that wouldn't seem to go away and the pain was so incredible that it made her throw up. No one could seem to explain why or what she was sick with, and within a few weeks Elizabeth passed away. It was so fast, that before Annabelle knew it, her sister was laid along side their parents and other brothers and sisters and the only one left was Annabelle. She never felt alone before she found herself standing in her family plot surrounded by grave markers. She wasn't quite as happy as she had been before making the best of the situation and she often spent her afternoons sitting in the graveyard, pulling weeds and watering the flowers on her families graves. It was one of these afternoons that Caleb returned from one of his trips away, and found her alone just sitting near the graves looking at the markers as though she was hoping to see someone in her family again. She was lost in thoughts and memories when a shadow cast over her blocking out the sunlight, when she turned her eyes up she saw him standing over her his hands clasped behind his back. He comforted her, spoke to her about so many things as though trying to get her to let go of her family and instead cling and rely on him. When she was 16, she was finally of an age that with permission could wed. Caleb, of course, managed to get permission granted and just a few days later they were married. It seemed like the moment he slipped that ring on her finger, things were different. She'd become his property, she belonged to him and not just in a marital way. Almost as if with her saying her vows and pledging herself to him, she had sold her soul. At first he was just very strict with her, and stern. He had demands and requirements and she had to follow them to the letter. Caleb still went out prowling the streets and girls disappeared as they traveled, leaving behind a line of bodies in the wake. Yet she never suspected him, never questioned him on what he did when he left her at home and was out late. She attended all of his sermons and it seemed as though he always wanted her on his arm. Annabelle was never allowed out without him, and if he suspected another man was even giving her the eye it was made clear with just a few simple words that those men were in danger if they even thought of approaching her. The real severe physical abuse however, didn't begin until after the First began to make itself known it their lives. Started to present itself to Caleb in the waking world, and he had given himself over to serve the evil entity completely, pledging her to it as well. Caleb started to gather and organize the Bringers shortly after. It was then when he started to systematically condition her to be more dependent on him, physically, mentally and emotionally. His anger and hatred towards women was amplified to a higher level then it had been before and often she found herself afraid of him. Slowly that feeling of fear started to subside and was replaced with a blind obedience. But it wasn't that blind, she saw everything, heard everything, felt everything. Somewhere in her mind, she had chosen to accept it and be Caleb's wife and live by the vows she made to him, even if he didn't always completely honor the ones he had made to her. Still slowly turning the ring around her finger, her other hand rested over her abdomen. There wasn't even a swell there yet, but somehow she could feel her baby growing inside. A warmth there, where it usually felt cold and empty. Closing her eyes she tried to concentrate and remember the birth of her first child, but there was very little there. Just flashes of pain, blood . . . like something out of a Wes Craven horror film. Annabelle wanted to remember the boys face, knowing she had seen him briefly during one of the few moments of lucidness she'd had during the event. After a moment she covered her eyes with her hand feeling groggy. She didn't want to fall asleep again, have the nightmares start up again. The dreams that weren't hers from battles long past. Countless deaths throughout the centuries, and the baby . . . her baby, the one that had been taken from her after it was ripped from her body before she could even hold him. It was the one thought in her mind that would stop everything else. All of her other thoughts, feelings and memories. The loss of her child, the imminent loss of the one she carried now and it seemed as though she was helpless to prevent it. She opened her eyes realizing someone was in the room with her and saw it was the Bringers. Annabelle frowned, "No, please don't." She said starting to sit up having been as quiet as possible since she'd first woken to avoid this very thing. "Please . . ." However the Bringers were anticipating her struggle and two held her down as the other injected a substance into the IV drip. She turned and cried out seeing the medication travel into her arm and within seconds her body went limp and she was once again put to sleep.End Run
"We have to get her away from them, it's as simple as that." Faith said. "We're running out of bodies here B, we can't just wait around any more." "If she isn't willing then there is no point in trying to capture her again." Buffy countered. "They're keeping her unconscious for some reason. Every time I cast the spell it says the same thing, she's walking on the astral plane and being kept from returning into the waking world." Willow said, "She won't be awake to ask, we just have to physically get her away from them and try to hide her somewhere until we can find a way to defeat the First and Caleb." "How can we hide her? It seems like the First knows everything we do, everything we're thinking." Kennedy said. "I can cast a spell to mask her and then we can move her to a different location that they won't think to look for her." Willow answered. "I know plenty of places under the city." Spike said, "But with the ubber vamps roaming the caves it's possible that they'll come across her down there and are almost as familiar with the tunnels as I am." "There's hundreds of crypts that don't open up into underground caves." Giles said, "Perhaps we can find one of the older ones that go deep and seal it off. So the Vampires won't be able to pick up her scent. Hopefully Willow's spell will be able to keep her hidden from any demons that might be able to sense her." "Except now she and her baby have an exceptional amount of power even if it hasn't been pushed into the active stages yet." Anya said, "That power is going to be like a beacon to all the demonic and mystical entities. Can Willow come up with a spell powerful enough to drowned out her and the baby from the entire universe?" "We don't need to make it a screen from the whole universe just Sunnydale." Willow responded. "Will? Can you come up with a spell like that?" Willow nodded, "And how long would you be able to maintain it?" "A couple days at least. A week at the very outside I think. Enough time to get Caleb out in the open and perhaps give us a bargaining chip." Buffy looked around at the group they had left, "Well we got half a plan. Now we just have to figure out how to get her away from the oldest Evil ever known and a psychotically jealous and extremely possessive husband."To be continued . . . .
