Lyla wasn’t missed back at the hotel. Not one person had even gone to her room, figuring that she had turned in early and didn’t want to be disturbed. Ellie was downstairs with Wesley comparing stories and Izzie was upstairs in her room reading the newspaper.
A couple of hours had passed since her *fight* with Angel and she was feelin’ pretty proud of herself for getting one over on him. She had kinda surprised herself there, but in the moment it was too irresistible to resist. Damn! Now she couldn’t think of anything else. Throwing aside the newspaper, she rolled off the bed and began to pace the room. She was going stir crazy. Grabbing her coat she head out. Maybe she could kill a couple of vamps before bed that would relieve some of this pent up energy.
She didn’t want a hassle so she snuck out the back.
“Going somewhere?”
Izzie spun around ready for a fight, but lowered her fists when she realized it was just Angel. “I was going for a walk.”
Angel smiled. “This time of night?”
“There’s something about the night air that clears my head.” Izzie said. Yeah, that sounded good. Angel looked down at he ground willing himself to keep his mouth shut. Izzie turned to go, but thought better of it and turned back. She took a seat next to Angel, pulling her knees up to her chest.
“Why so glum, chum?” she joked.
He shrugged. “Just thinking.”
“Of Connor?” she asked, knowing she’d hit the mark by the look on his face. “I’m not stupid, I’ve seen the looks between you two. There’s no love lost there.”
“He just thinks of me as a vampire, nothing more.” he looked up at the sky. “Can’t say I blame him really.”
There was that brooding again. Izzie felt a little bad, considering she was in the process of thinking of him as nothing more than a vampire. Izzie plucked a flower from the plant beside her. “What’s this?”
“Jasmine. Night blooming.” he said, with a hint of irony.
Izzie smiled. “Sounds about right.”
“So what is it like learning that your life didn’t really exist?”
“There are no words. I lost a friend. The pain is real, though he wasn’t.”
“A boyfriend?” he asked. Izzie smiled. “No, just a good friend.”
He nodded. There was a silence. Izzie had to ask. “So...what happened between you and Buffy?”
Angel’s head dropped. “You really don’t hold anything back do you?”
Izzie smiled. “Nope.” She nudged him with her shoulder. “So how did the pale hunk steal the slayer’s heart?”
Angel laughed at the description. “Luck I suppose.”
“I’m sure it was more than that.” Izzie insisted. What girl wouldn’t fall for him?
“Did you love her?” she asked, pushing a subject that he was rather uncomfortable with.
“Yes I did,” he answered simply and honestly.
“I heard you lost your soul because you...ah.... you know.” Izzie said, coming over all shy. It was too late, she’d said it know, though she really didn’t know why she was asking something so personal.
Angel was a little taken aback, but it wasn’t something that nobody knew about. He nodded instead of giving an actually answer. Izzie lowered her knees, shifting so that she actually faced him, as though she was about to tell him a secret. “I gotta say something, cause I’ve wondered since I found that out.... and I’m just plain nosy. Couldn’t you have the sex and not lose your soul.”
“It’s a moment of true happiness, not just the act.”
Izzie laughed. “Not everyone has a moment of true happiness believe me I...” Angel looked at her with raised eyebrows. “Have no clue what I am talking about. “Izzie finished. Angel laughed.
“But seriously you could just think of all bad stuff.”
Angel just shook his head at the whole concept. “Wouldn’t want to risk it.”
“So....”Izzie started, still amazed that she was rambling on about it,” if you were to have a huge fight with Connor and then sleep with me...theoretically speaking of course, you wouldn’t be truly happy?”
“I guess not.” Angel answered. There was a silence as the idea of them sleeping together sorta hung in the air.
Izzie put a hand on Angel’s shoulder. “Are you ok? I’m just trying to keep the mood light here.”
“I’m fine,” Angel lied.
“Does this have anything to do with what happened downstairs? The almost kissage? I was just messing around.” Except for the part of me liking it, she thought to herself. Now that was a scary thought. She hated vampires, detested them really. And part of her felt that towards him, just for the fact he was a vampire. Getting to know him a little might ease that uneasiness...but somehow she didn’t want to get the warm fuzzies for a vamp.
Angel turned to face her. “No, it’s not that.”
“Then what?” she whispered, her eyes skimming the length of his face. His eyes were so penetrating that she found she couldn’t look away. “I....”he began.
“Hey guys!”
Izzie spun her head around. “Elle!.....hi!”
“Umm...I’m gonna go up to bed,” Izzie said to Angel. “Night all.”
“Oh. Ok. Goodnight.” Elle said. “Did I interrupt something?” she asked when Izzie was gone.
“I’m not sure,” Angel said honestly.
“Mind if I sit?” Ellie asked. Angel made a gesture beside him and Ellie took a seat.
“She’s very strong,” Ellie said, speaking of Izzie. “But she’s not that strong, after everything.”
Angel just nodded, unsure of her point. “I know about you and Buffy. ”Ellie said, though not sure why.
“Listen, Ellie,” Angel said seriously. “I’m not here to hurt Izzie, you or Lyla. I’m just here to help.”
Ellie just nodded. “I know that. I didn’t mean anything by it, or that I think you are trying something. I just don’t want to see Izzie get hurt...in general..”
Angel looked down at his hands. “I know. Besides even if I did, which I don’t, I don’t think she likes me very much underneath it all.”
“That’s only because you’re a vampire. She hasn’t really been around nice ones- fake or not. “
Their conversation was interrupted from a scream inside. Angel was already running inside by the time Ellie had even got to her feet. Gunn had just staked a vampire that had attacked Fred. Gunn threw Angel a sword. “Looks like we have more upstairs.”
A vamp came through the back door and grabbed Ellie from behind. Wesley grabbed an axe. “Duck,” he said to Ellie, and without slowing, swung the axe. Ellie registered what he’d said and just in time ducked her head. The vamp’s head fell to the floor before he collapsed in dust. Wesley grabbed her arm and pulled her to the safety of the office.
“I’ll go upstairs. Gunn, Wes, you stay here,” Angel ordered before taking the steps two at a time. He got to Izzie’s door. It was closed but her heard a struggle inside. Angel stood back and kicked in the door. He found Izzie in a tank and boxers staring at a pile of dust. “What is going on?” she asked. “Where’s Lyla?”
Together they ran to her room and found it empty.
“No sign of a struggle,” Angel observed. Izzie stood by the window. “It’s locked. She wasn’t here when they attacked.”
“Angel!” came Wes’ call from downstairs.
Once downstairs, they found a vampire with Gunn’s sword at his chest. “What did you come for?” Angel asked, grabbing him around the collar.
“Lyla,” the frightened vampire said quickly. “The gypsy.”
“Well, that was easy,” Izzie, remarked.
“Where is she?” Angel asked.
“ We don’t know,” the vamp insisted. “We thought she would be here.”
Angel staked the vamp and turned to Izzie and Ellie as though they would know where she was. “I don’t know where she is, but she went out for a walk I bet,” Ellie said sheepishly. “She was complaining earlier about wanting to get out.”
“Oh great, she’s out there alone.” Izzie said.
“Don’t start worrying yet,” Angel said. “I have an idea where she might be.”

Both Connor and Lyla had fallen asleep. For both of them it was comforting to talk to someone and have them understand without criticizing them for feeling that way, or acting that way.
Lyla had been the first to fall asleep with her head nestled under his chin, and her hand rested on his chest. The position was foreign to him, as well as the feelings he had with a girl pressed up against him. The way she was curled up around him, made him feel oddly protective of her. After she’d fallen asleep, he’d taken the time to look at her. He ran his fingertips along her bare arm and up the curve of her shoulder where he wrapped a silky strand of hair around his finger. With his hand rested on the curve of her hip, he closed his eyes and for the first time in a long time, fell into a peaceful sleep.
A noise woke them instantly. Lyla had heard it first and raised herself up on her elbow. “What was that?”
Connor smiled lazily. “Just the building settling.”
“Oh.” she felt stupid now. Just then she realized the position they were in. His hand on her waist, her hand on his chest, lying in bed in the dark.... alone.
“Thanks for bring me here,” she whispered. What was it about this guy that made her so...soft. Usually she was used to fighting them off, but this one wasn’t fighting. He was as inexperienced as a teenager. Maybe that was what made him so appealing.
Her hair had fallen over her shoulder in front of her face when she’d looked down at him. Connor, on instinct, reached up and tucked it behind her ear, his hand caressing her cheek gently. On instinct, on Lyla’s behalf, she was taken with the sudden tenderness from him, and she leaned down and kissed him softly on the cheek.
Just then Lyla was grabbed from behind and yanked backwards. “Connor!” She screamed, before everything went black. Again.

“They’ve been here,” Izzie said, holding up Lyla’s coat. Then she looked at the tangled sheets. “Looks like Lyla’s worked off that access energy.”
The mention of sex brought about their earlier conversation. “I don’t think...”Angel began.
“There’s blood,” Izzie said. “On the pillow.”
“Well, it looks like the vampires found them.”
“Ya think?” Izzie said, now worried that Lyla may be dead.
“It’s not Lyla’s,” Angel said, turning towards the door. “It’s Connor’s. I can smell it.”
Izzie made a face, as she followed him. :”Did anyone tell you how gross that talent is?”

They returned to the hotel only to get the rest of the gang. Izzie was impressed with the wide array of weaponry, and selected a bow. Her trusty stake tucked into her back pocket. “How do you know where they’ll be?” she asked.
“I have an idea.” Was all he said.
Ellie squeezed in between Wesley and Fred, which didn’t seem to impress Fred at all. Ellie hadn’t been here long, but she knew there was definitely something between the two of them. They pulled up outside a large dark building. Izzie couldn’t help but wonder if there was any other kind of place in LA. Inside they found Connor and Lyla tied together back to back. There were five vamps standing around them.
Angel and the gang were standing in a hallway, overlooking the main room. Across from them, against the far wall Lyla looked pretty much untouched but Connor had a gash above his eyes.
“Now what?” Ellie asked.
“We attack.” Angel said simply. Izzie had to refrain from saying *ya think?!* Once more and listened to Angels’ plan. When Angel gave the signal then they ran into the center from different sides and began to fight. In the midst of the fight Lyla and Connor sat by helplessly.
“I can’t get out of these ropes!” Connor muttered, trying to struggle his way out.
“Stop moving!” Lyla yelled. Every time he pulled the ropes cut into her flesh. She was tired of being tied up and Connor wasn’t making it any better. She just wanted to hit something hard, she wanted these ropes...off...NOW! Suddenly the pain was gone and when she looked down she was shocked to see that the ropes was now lying on the floor around them.
Connor was just as stunned, thinking he’d done it himself. He reached out for Lyla and helped her to her feet.
“I....I...” she began to stammer.
“What?” Connor asked. A vampire was heading for them. Connor pushed her behind him. Lyla put her hand on his shoulder. “Let me try something,” she said, standing in front of him.
Connor opened his mouth to argue but Lyla’s look made her back down. Lyla was terrified of what she was doing but she needed to prove something to herself. “Stop!” she commanded with authority at the approaching vampire. The vampire saw a flash from her necklace and found himself frozen in place. Lyla smiled. “Oh, now this is the best thing to happen so far.”
Connor came to stand beside her. “Now what are you going to do?”
Lyla shrugged. “I didn’t think that far ahead.”
Connor handed her a stake. “Killing it would be good.”
Lyla took the stake and thrust it into his dead heart. It always looked so easy when Izzie did it. But she had to put some muscle behind it as she pushed it through his flesh. The feeling gave her the wiggins. Vampire or not.
With one vamp left alive Angel was about to kill him when Lyla stepped in front of him. “I want to know why me? Why do I keep getting knocked out and tied up? Cause already I’ve probably filled my quota of concussions for a lifetime.”
“We won’t stop looking for the three, we know you are one, we want the two others.”
Ellie and Izzie froze. Lyla refrained from pointing them out to get them off her back. “How do you know it’s me?”
“The gypsy wears a necklace,” he pointed to the one around her neck. “It calls to us. We will always find you.”
Lyla put her hand over her necklace. Lyla took the stake from Izzie. “Well maybe others will, but you won’t.” And she staked him. Hell with the wiggins that felt good.
A silence filled the air. Lyla looked down at the pile of dust, and she let the stake drop to the ground. She turned then and looked at them. “That sounded really corny didn’t it?”
There were several groans from the group as they turned and headed out of the room. Lyla shrugged and followed. “I mean, I was trying to sound all badass...were you guys slightly intimidated.... hey...guys?!?!”

Later that night after yet another lecture from the group about leaving the hotel, Angel brought up the matter of the necklace.“We have to destroy it or they’ll keep coming and it won’t be long before they figure out who the other two are.” Angel said.
He was absolutely right, but Lyla couldn’t do it. “Did you see me in there?” she said to the group. “ I had powers. I can stop them if they come after us.”
“Maybe the powers aren’t in the necklace or because of it,” Izzie said, trying to comfort her. Lyla was growing frustrated and was close to tears. “You can’t...”
“You know we have to,” Wesley said.
“I know that,” Lyla snapped. Angel came towards her to take it, but Lyla stepped back. “I’ll do it myself.” With that she turned and went to her room.

Izzie turned with drinks in her hand and placed on in front of Angel as she took her seat. “Our first battle as a team,” she said.
Angel nodded, as he took a sip from his cup. “Yep. Looks like it’s going to be an interesting time.”
Izzie laughed. “Especially if they ever figure out who the other two are.” Her laugh was tense, as she moved her glass from hand to hand. She stared at her drink as though it were something fascinating. It was better than looking at him. In the very short time she’d known him, he had a way of looking at her that made her feel like he knew everything she was thinking. And she didn’t want him reading her thoughts tonight. He was right about the real world and her abilities. She had been responsible for two people, and two people only, and she’d let one get hurt. Lyla could have been killed tonight, if it hadn’t been for Angel and Connor saving the day.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Angel said quietly. Izzie looked up with raised eyebrows. How did he always know?
“What isn’t?” she asked, taking the dumb route.
“Lyla. You couldn’t have stopped that. She chose to go out against warnings.”
Izzie shrugged. “I know that.” Angel wasn’t convinced. She was so vulnerable, and that scared him. He’d seen Buffy vulnerable, but the girl had also stopped the world from ending a couple hundred times. This was completely different. Izzie didn’t know what was coming. Maybe she couldn’t handle it. Izzie saw the way he was looking at her, and felt uncomfortable. They both knew that she wasn’t exactly the best slayer ever, and considering their situation, she’d have to get good...fast.
“Here, I wanted to give this to you earlier, before everything happened.” He reached into a pocket and brought out a black box. Izzie’s eyes widened. “I knew we had a connection, but this...”
Angel laughed. “I’m serious.”
“Got it,” Izzie winked, “Serious.” She opened the box and found a sterling silver cross necklace lying on black velvet inlay. “Wow...this is....”
“I gave Buffy one, when I first met her.”
Then it must mean a lot, Izzie thought. She took the necklace out and put it around her neck. The cross was cool against her skin. “Thank you Angel.” She took his hand and squeezed it gently before turning and heading upstairs to her room.
Meanwhile Lyla was upstairs sitting one her bed with the necklace in her hand. When she’d had the powers, even if only for a short time, she felt like she belonged to something. She had ancestors...a clan, a history. Without it, she didn’t know what she was. She was the one that didn’t fit in. She had been an emotional wreck lately and weak...she hated being weak.
And that little piece she had left, she had to destroy and risk being just Lyla. How could she go back to that? She wasn’t stupid she knew they were right. She had to destroy it, but what if she could have stopped them? They were going to keep looking for them anyway? But she knew, just thinking of the options, that she had only one. Again she was making a sacrifice, saying goodbye to something once again.
She ran her thumb over the small stone teardrop before she laid it on her beside table. She picked up a large sculpture, and closing her eyes she took a deep breath. One second is all it would take to destroy it. Before she could reconsider, she brought her hand down, and heard the crunch of the stone break. For a minute she sat with her eyes closed, willing the tears to stop. Picking up the small pieces she walked to the bathroom and flushed it to be sure. There, just like that, it was gone.
She walked back into the bedroom and continued to the balcony overlooking the garden. Beside her there were plants growing along the railing. She saw that there was a bud that hadn’t quite bloomed yet, hidden under the leaves. Laying her hand over top of it, she closed her eyes and concentrated hard.
After several seconds she felt something tickling her palm, and smiled. Lifting her hand up, she looked down at the bud, that was now in full bloom and larger than the rest of them.
As she walked back into the room, she was feeling better. “ The girl’s still got it,” she said aloud, as the door, by itself, closed behind her.
