"So, here is the problem." Xander started as he and Spike made their way back toward Thelsea and Artemis. "We either follow the goddess to make sure she doesn't kill Tara, or we search for Wesley and Gunn. Either one, we are not splitting up."
"Wouldn't dream of splitting up, pet." Spike replied. "Look, that Artemis bitch seemed confused enough. I'd say we have enough time to find Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum before she gets to Tara. Maybe Tweedle-Dee will have some idea as to what is going on with our witch."
"I don't think Gunn would appreciate you calling him Tweedle-Dum." Xander told him as they entered the front hall. Thelsea was standing stalk-still, watching her goddess with nervous eyes. Artemis was pacing, muttering under her breath. After taking a deep breath and glancing briefly at Spike, Xander sent the two women a large smile. "Well, it seems we are in need of some assistance. Spike and I thought maybe we could go find Wesley and Gunn. They'd love to help us find Tara."
"You don't really believe I trust you." Artemis stated, her face contorted into what looked like a permanent sneer. She was better at the expression than Spike was, which was saying a lot.
"Not really." Xander admitted.
"Don't really matter, now does it?" Spike said coldly, starting to drag Xander out of the temple. Artemis crossed her arms, glaring. "We do what we want, you do what you want. But you aren't hurting Tara. Got that, bitch?"
"Spike." Thelsea said in warning.
"You stay out of this." Spike ordered. Artemis let out a small growl, before stalking towards the vampire. Spike snorted and looked down at the short woman. "What? Do you have something to say?" When all Artemis did was sneer, Spike once again walked toward the temple entrance. "You know, you're rather weak for a goddess."
With that said, Spike slammed through the doorway and into the front quad. He ignored the arrow that went flying past his head in warning. Xander, however, let out a small gasp and dragged Spike out of Artemis' range. Xander jerked on Spike's arm until the vampire turned toward him. "Spike, will you stop this? I understand you get a thrill out of pissing off the locals, but that was a goddess for crying out loud!"
"Relax, pet." Spike smirked. "She wasn't going to kill me."
"Really?" Xander asked, his voice this side of hysterical. "Because that looked like a wooden arrow heading your direction to me!"
"Yeah, that flew past my head." Spike replied. "She missed."
"So?" Xander questioned. "Maybe something distracted her? Who cares! The point is that she attempted to kill you, damn it! I'm not going to let you leave me here all alone, Spike. You will not die on me, do you understand?"
"I'm not going to die." Spike said softly, slipping an arm around Xander's waist.
"But she was going to kill you." Xander mumbled in protest.
"He's right." Thelsea interrupted. She stood on the top of the steps, much like the first night they had arrived there. Despite it only being three days ago, it felt like an eternity. "Artemis wouldn't have killed Spike."
"But she shot at him." Xander said, his voice on the edge of a whine. Spike pulled him close, allowing the human to rest his head on his shoulder.
"She was angry. She... Tends to get that way." Thelsea replied.
"Bloody bitch is more like it." Spike retorted.
"You need to watch what you say, Spike." Thelsea advised. "Artemis can't kill you. You're out of her jurisdiction."
"What?" Xander asked.
"Is a vampire not dead?" Thelsea tilted her head.
"Undead." Spike replied.
"None the less, you are not of the living." Thelsea said. "Artemis reigns over the beasts of the wild. While Spike is indeed a beast of sorts, for he is a predator, he is not living. Artemis can not touch him. You see, even gods have rules they must follow. It's a system of... Checks and balances, I suppose."
"See?" Spike smiled at Xander. "Told you I was safe."
"Safe from Artemis, yes." Thelsea told him. "But you aren't safe from others. Watch yourself, Spike."
"Yeah, whatever." Spike shrugged. Thelsea stared at them a moment, before turning to walk back into the temple. About a foot from the door, she glanced back over her shoulder.
"By the way, you are no longer welcome here." Thelsea informed them. "This is your only warning."
"Wonderful." Xander said sarcastically as the temple doors shut with an echoing bang. With a set of sighs, Xander and Spike turned toward the dark, torch lit streets of Atlantis. "What are we suppose to do now?"
"I try and find Wesley or Gunn's scent. If we catch sight of Tara along the way, well, good for us." Spike replied. "We need to regroup. That's our first priority."
"Funny. In all those adventure books the first priority is food and shelter." Xander commented.
Gunn let out an undignified yelp as his body went flying into the street. His shoulder hit the gravel covered ground, sending pain down his arm. The pain, however, seemed rather disconnected. In fact, everything seemed disconnected. With a groan, Gunn fought his way to his feet. With a giggle, he realized that he felt like he was floating.
Gunn stumbled down the dark street, his feet refusing to cooperate with him. Finally, he gave up and leaned against the nearest wall. His breathing was irregular, his sight blurry. Gunn had no idea as to where he was. Blinking, he squinted back the way he assumed he came. Down the street was the vague shape of a building, with a tacky sign dangling by the door. With a frown, Gunn looked the other way. The road in that direction seemed endless, with dark shadows that he was unable to identify.
Something tickled at the back of his mind, trying to remind him of something he had forgotten. However, whatever had been in that drink forced the thought away and returned his mind to the blob of goop it had transformed into. A dull sense of pleasure. A thrum of a heartbeat that had to be his own. Heat. So much heat. He was sweating, and panting slightly, now that he took the time to notice. Letting out a low moan, Gunn let his body drag itself down the wall until he was sitting against it.
"Oh, gross." A voice exclaimed from down the street. Gunn tried to force his eyes open, not even aware that they had closed. His body, however, was too relaxed to respond. "Spike, I really don't think they are down here."
"Bloody hell, will you stop complaining for two seconds?" A cockney voice demanded. The accent was vaguely familiar, once again causing something in the back of Gunn's mind to perk up and pay attention. "Both of their scents are here."
"Yeah, but that could have been hours ago, Spike." The first voice said. "Oh, god, what is that smell?"
"Druggies, alcoholics, and... I believe that's urine." Spike replied, sounding far too happy for the words he had just stated. Gunn finally forced his eyes opened. Spike. That name really was familiar. Before him was two dark figures, one with a bright spot of white at the top. It took Gunn a moment, but he finally realized that was the man's hair.
"Umm, Spike?" The non-blonde figure said slowly. "I found Gunn."
"Bloody hell, mate." Spike cursed. Gunn blinked, which was a very difficult task, as the two men rushed toward him. Two worried faces came into focus. "Oi. Gunn! Wake up."
"Gunn?" The other asked. Gunn forced his mind to cooperate with him and came up with the conclusion that this person was named Xander. "Gunn, are you alright? How do you feel?"
"Feels... Like... Cotton... Candy." Gunn replied in a curious little voice.
"Bloody hell, he's gone mental!" Spike exclaimed.
"He's just drunk." Xander explained. "Though, drunk of what... Well, I don't want to know."
"Hey, Gunn?" Spike said in a dramatically loud voice.
"He's drunk, not deaf." Xander interrupted.
"Whatever." Spike snapped. "Hey, where’s Wesley?"
"West?" Gunn asked, his eyes crossing.
"No!" Spike growled. "Wesley! You know, English?"
"Eng... English?" Gunn shook his head slightly and looked back toward the large building at the end of the street. "Wanted books."
"Books?" Xander asked.
"Books. Books." Gunn giggled, before his eyes rolled up into his head and he passed out in the middle of the street.
"Right. Books." Spike repeated. "You stay here, pet. I'll... Go look for some books."
"I really don't think that's a bookstore." Xander pointed out.
"Considering all the music and pheromones seeping out of that woodwork, I'd say not." Spike agreed.
"Wait... People are having sex in there?" Xander squeaked. "You mean like an orgy?"
"Most likely." Spike suddenly leered. "Want to join in, whelp?"
"And end up like him?" Xander pointed at Gunn, who was currently drooling on himself. Xander didn't want to think about the man's reaction when he woke up with a hangover. Gunn seemed like a man's man kind of person, excluding his obvious attraction to Wesley. Xander raised an eyebrow at Spike. "Yeah, right."
"Keep an eye on him." Spike ordered.
"Where is he going to go?" Xander called after him. Xander let out a sigh and moved to sit down next to Gunn. After inspecting the ground, however, he chose to stand and watch as Spike strode up to the dimly lit 'library'.
