Chapter 8
Buffy was sitting between
Spike’s legs eating a hot dog. The cookout was in full swing but space at the
tables was limited. So, Buffy was sharing an Adirondack chair with him. He had a leg swing over one of the arms, giving her
room to perch between his thighs. It was just fine with him. His arms were
around her waist while she leaned back on his chest.
“Do you want a bite?” Buffy
asked, turning so she could see him. There was a dollop of ketchup on her chin.
He leaned forward to lick it off. “Oh, is there more?” She wiped at her face.
“Nope, all clean,” Spike
said. “If it wasn’t I’d still be licking.”
“Pig,” Buffy pronounced,
turning bacoundound. She went to take a bite but Spike grabbed her hand. He
pulled it toward him and took a huge bite, leaving her only a small bit left.
“Thank you. I appreciated
that.”
al'>Buffy pouted as she surveyed
what was left. “Gee, I said a bite not the whole thing.”
“You don’t want me to
starve, do you?”
She rolled her eyes. “Highly
unlikely, not the way you eat. I’m going to get another one. Do you want me to
get something else for you?”
“Yeah, get me a hamburger,”
Spike said, smacking her ass as she stood up. “Tell Lindsey to make it rare.”
He grinas sas she rubbed her
bottom and muttered curses at him as she walked away. The day had been great. Despite his misgivings
he’d been enjoying himself. Most of the group was friendly and fun loving.
They’d been involved in a volleyball game earlier and now the cookout. Once it
started getting dark they would brep, hp, heading for home or some to other
activities.
“Hi, there,” a girl said
over his shoulder. Spike turned around to find Harmony; a schoolmate of Buffy’s
standing behind him. “I’m Harmony.”
“Yeah, I remember,” Spike
said, putting both his feet on the ground. The girl’s earlier perusal of his
manly bits under his cut off shorts made him uncomfortable. “We were
introduced.”
The girl giggled. “I didn’t
know if you remembered or not but I guess you do.”
Spike scanned the area near
the grill for Buffy. She was leaning on a table talking to Cordelia. Couldn’t
she see he needed her?
“So, did you need
something?” Spike asked, rubbing at his chest. He sent mental signals to Buffy
to come back.
“Well, yeah,” Harmony said,
taking a seat on the bench near him. “I was at the party last night, too.
You’re really into Buffy, aren’t you?”
“She’s bloody fantastic,” he
agreed with a smile. “I’m having a lot of fun with her.”
And hopefully that would
give Harmony the hint to leave him alone.
“Good, I’m glad. Riley was
really a bastard to her. She needs someone to lavish a lot of attention on
her.”
“You think so?”
Okay, maybe he wasn’t as
attractive as he thought he was. Harmony said she needed something from him. If
it wasn’t him then what was it?
“Of course,” Harmony said,
rolling her eyes. “She and I have been cheering together since the first year
of junior high. Even if we’re not the best of friends, it’s all for the team,
and helping each other out and stuff. Rah, rah.” Her
arms waved through the air as if she had pom-poms clutched in them.
“That’s good,” Spike said.
“You said you needed something from me?”
Harmony looked over her
shoulder at where Lindsey was tending to the grill. The longing on her face was
almost painful. It was clear what she wanted.
“I’ve liked Lindsey as far
as back as I can remember, but I’ve always been too young,” Harmony said,
clutching his hand. “I really want a chance with him.”
“Sorry, pet, I don’t do
matchmaking.”
“All I want is for you and
Lindsey to go to the Bronze tomorrow night,” Harmony said, keeping a death grip
on his hand. “The girls are going after we have a meeting and practice. You
don’t have to do anything else. Just get him there.”
“And what’s in this for me?”
Spike asked.
“More time with Buffy,
silly,” Harmony said, with a smile. “There’s dancing, pool, darts and food. We
all just kind of hang out together. And her father wouldn’t give her a hard
time because it wouldn’t be an actual date.”
“What wouldn’t be an actual
date?” Buffy asked. She nudged Spike’s legs apart so she could return to her
former spot. In her hands was a plate with two burgers, another hot dog and
some chips.
Harmony quickly explained
her plan to Buffy. “So, will you two go?”
“ up up to you, Luv,” Spike
said, wrapping his arms around Buffy. “I’ll take any excuse to spend more time
with you.”
“Harm,” Buffy said. “I’m
going to be there. And ve tve the fact that Spike will be there but…”
“I know,” Harmony
interrupted. “You can’t force Lindsey into something he doesn’t want. And I
don’t want to. I just want the chance to be around him a little more and see if
he takes notice. That’s all. Don’t I deserve to have someone, too?”
“Okay, Harmony,” Buffy said.
“Yeah, you do deserve someone. We’ll be there and we’ll hint.”
“Thank you, thank you,”
Harmony exclaimed. She jumped up and threw her arms around them. “I love you
both.”
“No problem,” Spike said,
laughing.
The blonde kissed them on
the cheek and took off to rejoin her group. Spike watched her for a few
seconds. When he turned around, Buffy was giving him an evil look.
“If she’s so attractive why
don’t you go after her?” Buffy asked.
She was clearly jealous. He
liked it.
“Why would I do that when I
have you?” Spike said, almost purring. “You’re a hundred times more beautiful.”
“Sweet talk won’t get you
anywhere,” Buffy said.
“It won’t?” Spike asked,
nibbling on her ear. “Even if I tell you how wonderful yoste.ste. How sweet you
are and I worship the ground you walk on.”
Buffy rolled her eyes,
pulling away from him. She waved the plate under his face.
“Eat up,” she told him in a
tone that brooked no argument. “I’ll decide how long to punish you.”
“Oh, yeah, can’t wait for
that.”
Spike reached for a
hamburger, leaning over and kissing her lips quickly when she wasn’t paying
attention. Satisfied that she would give in easily enough, he settled back in
the chair. He idly stroked her hip with one hand while he ate. It was going to
start getting dark soon. Some people were already packing up but he wasn’t
ready to let go of her yet. He hoped that Angel would stick around as long as
possible.
~~~~~~~
The girls were finalizing
their plans for the next day. They were all excited about it. Manicures,
pedicures, a strategy meeting, practice then dancing at the Bronze to finish it
out. The guys thought they were crazy. Well, that and upset that almost a whole
day of Spring Break was going to be wasted on it. It was something the girls
did all the time and they told them that. But they were only given dirty looks.
After what seemed an interminable
time, Buffy and Cordelia headed back their way. Behind them was Harmony.
“Damn it,” Lindsey muttered,
standing up. He backed up behind Spike.
“Oh, come on,” Angel said,
in a stage whisper. “Go for it. She’s pretty.”
“Dumb,” Lindsey hissed. “She
can’t complete a sentence.”
“She did to me,” Spike said,
chuckling. He watched the three girls coming toward them. They moved in sync.
Their hips swayed at the same pace. It was like someone had choreographed them.
He smiled at Buffy. “Several sentences and I think it actually formed a
paragraph, too.”
“Then you date her,” Lindsey
whispered in his ear.
“Hey, Buffy,” Spike said,
holding his arms out and giving his friend a pointed look. She slipped into
them. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah,” Buffy said, sliding
her arms around his waist. “We said we’d give Harm a ride home. Is that okay,
Angel?”
“No problem,” Angel replied.
“Is it guys?”
“Of course not,” Spike said,
standing. “The more the merrier.”
“Oooh, thanks,” Harmony
squealed. “Let’s go.”
“It’s crowded back there
with all the gear,” Buffy replied, wrinkling up her nose.
“Yeah, but we’ll be alone,”
Spike whispered. He raised an eyebrow while he waited for her to make a
decision.
“It’s okay,” Lindsey jumped
in. “Buffy, Spike, sit in the back seat. I’ll sit back here and catch some
shuteye on the way.”
Harmony looked heartbroken
as she realized the length that Lindsey would go through to avoid her. She
slipped in the backseat by herself. Spike grabbed Lindsey’s arm and pulled him
a few feet away.
“Look, mate, I know you
don’t want to get involved with her but couldn’t you be nice to her? She’s all
upset because you’re treating her like she’s got the bloody plague or
something.”
“Spike…”
