Chapter Nine
By the time that Rupert Giles pulled into his designated space in the teacher’s parking lot at River Valley High School, William had learned that not only did the Harris twins have a habit of finishing each others sentences, they also had the ability to speak for prolonged periods of time without taking a breath. William was in absolute awe of the pair. He found Willow totally enchanting, though a bit odd. Her carefree appearance and friendly nature, had instantly put him at ease. Xander was an odd one as far as William was concerned. He seemed to be totally aloof and dimwitted. But William felt that there was more to Xander Harris than met the eye. No one could be that buffoonish and not get beaten to a pulp on a daily basis. Still William couldn’t help but to laugh at the awful puns that the other boy had made during the ride to school. He hoped that he and Xander would at least share a class or two once he received his own class schedule. Noticing that his uncle had stopped the car and was now addressing everyone in the vehicle, William shook off his thoughts about the Harris twins, and turned his attention toward his guardian.
“William you will come with Wesley and myself to the library. Ms. Calendar will be in to administer an achievement test to you shortly.” Xander patted William on the back and shook his head sadly in sympathy. Willow laughed.
“And you two,” Rupert continued. Willow and Xander looked at him expectantly. “I expect to see the both of you in my office promptly at 2:15 sharp.” Both Harris siblings nodded in answer.
“Very well then,” Rupert concluded. “Everyone out.” They exited the vehicle and set forth on their own agendas. Before William moved away from the car, Xander turned to him with a smile.
“Hey !” Xander began. “Try to hurry up and finish. That way you can eat lunch with me and Will. You can meet our friends and stuff.” William was confused at first by Xander’s use of the shortened version of his own name. He quickly realized that the boy was referring to his sister and nodded his acceptance of the invitation to eat with his new friends.
“Sure mate. Come to the library when you’re ready.” Xander smiled and turned to follow in the direction that his sister had taken off in.
“Come along William.” Rupert called to his nephew. “We don’t want to be late.” William followed his uncle and cousin in the direction of the school’s main entrance. He was conscious of the appreciative stares that he was receiving as he followed the other two Englishmen. He swallowed down his fear and put on his best bad boy smirk and sauntered along behind his elders. William refused to scan the crowd, preferring to seem uninterested in his surroundings. Once they entered the building they were immediately stopped by a stern looking woman with short blond hair.
“Mr. Giles,” William wasn’t sure to whom she was speaking being that she had her eyes set on him. She seemed to be sizing him up and William could not help but to feel that by her estimation, he came up lacking. “Is this the nephew that you spoke to me about?” Oh God. Who the hell is she? As if he had heard him, Rupert answer William’s silent query.
“William, I’d like for you to meet Ms. Maggie Walsh, the school principal.” William stuck out his hand and politely introduced himself.
“Pleased to meet you Ms. Walsh. I’m William.” Maggie’s eyebrows rose at the unexpected politeness coming from this apparent punk.
“Well, William is it?” She began. “ I have been told that you’ve had a rather unorthodox upbringing and have been schooled by your mother up until recently.” It was William’s turn to be surprised. “Is this correct?” William quickly recovered from the fact that his seemingly straight laced uncle had made up such a bold faced lie about his past , and nodded the affirmative.
“Yes ma’am. That is true.” Maggie nodded in return.
“Well, I’m sure that we can see to your education just fine here at Valley High. I hope that you will have a pleasant experience here. Mr. Giles.” She stated again, without looking at ei Rup Rupert or Wesley. She set forth with her daily walk through of the school dismissing the threesome without a backward glance.
“Yes well, it is always such a pleasure chatting with you as well Ms. Walsh.” Rupert said with false cheer. William was surprised to hear the sarcastic remark coming from his uncle and looked at him with questioning eyes. Wesley chuckled. Thoroughly embarrassed for his conduct Rupert cleared his throat. “Come along you two.” Wesley shot Williagringrin and followed his father down the hall with William in tow. They entered the library and William sat down at one of the long wooden tables to wait for Ms. Calendar. He did not have to wait too long. A beautiful raven haired woman stepped through the door about five minutes after they had arrived. William was instantly curious as to who she could be. When his uncle turned to greet her, William was pleasantly surprised.
“Ah, Jenny!” The senior Giles walked over to the woman and enveloped her in a warm hug. “Thank you so much for assisting me with William here.” She smiled warmly.
“It’s no trouble Rupert.” Jenny smiled at William. “Nothing say dinner and a movie won’t take care of.” Rupert threw back his head and laughed. William observed the interplay between the pair noticing that they had remained in each others arms during the entire conversation. Well looky here!
Jenny and Rupert seemed to realize their unprofessional position and released one another at the same time. They walked over to the boy and Rupert introduced them properly.
“William,” he began. “I’d like to introduce you to my colleague, Jenny Calendar.” ;“Oh. I’m reduced to colleague status now am I?” She shook her head and smiled, thrusting her hand out to William. “He’s such an old fuddy duddy.” She laughed as Rupert sputtered. “Hi, William. I’m Jenny. You can call me Ms. Calendar when we are in school. You’ll be seeing a lot of me I assure you.” Wesley stepped out of the office and smiled widely at the vibrant woman.
“Why hello Jenny.” He stepped forward for a hug. “It’s good to see you this morning. How do you like my cousin William?” He turned to his cousin and looked back to Jenny to see her reaction to he boys appearance. He wasn’t disappointed. Wesley caught the woman’s subconscious perusal of the tempting teen before her. Yummy, isn’t he? Feeling Wesley’s eyes on her, Jenny let her gaze fall.
“Um, William,” she addressed the boy. “Why don’t we go back to my classroom. I have a free period so we shouldn’t be disturbed.” The two older Giles stared at her open mouthed and William looked at her like she’d just propositioned him. Replaying her own words in her head, Jenny realized that she sounded as though she had done just that. She blushed and went to correct herself.
“I meant that I can test you without anyone barging in.” Oh Goddess! That’s really no better. She was saved when William laughed and stood up. She’s a peach!
“Let’s go Ms. Calendar. I think my uncle and cousin may be on the verge of a stroke.” The double meaning of his words did not go unnoticed by either man. Rupert cleared his throat and began to clean his glasses. Wesley excused himself and rushed back into the office. William shook his head in merriment. I think this school thing might be alright.
“I’m ready when you are.” William looked at Jenny expectantly.
“Oh, of course. Follow me.” She led William out of the library to her room.
An hour later, an exhausted William reentered the library. The test had been hard, but he thought that he had done well. His uncle hadn’t exactly been lying earlier when he had told Principal Walsh that he had been home schooled. Rebecca Giles had reinforced William’s learning by providing lesson hom home as well. When he had attended school, he was always far ahead of the others in his class, knowing more than what was expected for a child of his grade level. William sat back at the table where he had sat earlier that morning and put his head on his arms opting for a nap before Xander’s expected arrival. Being that no one ever seemed to utilize the library, neither Rupert or Wesley felt the need to disturb the boy. Nearly two hours later, Xander bounced into the library. Heeen een prepared to make a goofy comment, but stopped short upon seeing William sound asleep. His mouth was open just a bit and he appeared to be breathing through it. Xander thought he had never seen anything more adorable. He chastised himself for his thoughts. Enough of that Xanman. William might be a cutie but he absolutely positively screams straight. Resigned to the fact that he didn’t have a chance with the bleached blond Adonis, Xander went to wWillWilliam. He shook the teen’s shoulder and stood back as William stretched and yawned widely. Xander grinned as William rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands. When William blinked at him owlishly, and grinned, Xander couldn’t help but smile.
“Hi, Xander. I must have fell asleep.” He blushed nervously. Why is he looking at me like that? At that moment his uncle and Wesley reemerged from the office where they had been doing some paper work.
“Hello Xander,” Wesley spoke. “Are you here for William?”
“Yes in deedy!” Xander answered. William couldn’t help but notice that the boy had resorted to acting like a clown. “Yeah mate.” William replied. He stood and followed Xander. He was nervous about meeting Xander’s friends. As William walked behind his new friend he took in Xander bright clothing. He wondered if he was committing social suicide by associating with the boy, but quickly put aside these feelings. Who cared if he and his sister appeared as though they received fashion advice from that Carrot Top chap from those phone adds on the tellie. Willow and Xander were nice to him and that was all that mattered. William followed Xander out of the library and walked with him to the student lounge where Willow and the others were waiting to meet him. As soon as they arrived Willow jumped up and gave him a hug.
“Hey William,” she beamed. “I’d like for you to meet our friends Amy, Oz and..”
“Buffy?” William gasped.
“William!” The petite blonde exclaimed. “Oh my God!” She jumped up and rushed to hug the equally shocked young man. Everyone else exchanged curious glances. Xander spoke up for the entire group.
“I take it you two know each other.” Long lost lovers probably. He hoped that he wasn’t sulking.
“Sorry guys,” Buffy began. “William and I go way back. Actually he used to live in L.A.” She further explained. “That is until recently.” Buffy turned her attention back to William. “You kind of took off without a trace. Mom’s been out of her mind worrying about you.” She stated seriously.
“Bloody hell,” William replied. “I didn’t mean to upset her. I’ll give her a call tonight.”
“Yeah, you’d better mister!” Buffy said poking him in the chest. He smiled.
“How is your sister?” William asked.
“Why don’t you ask her yourself?” William turned around in the direction of the familiar voice.
“Faith!” He scooped the buxom brunette into a bear hug. “What are you two doing her here?”
“Mom wanted us to have a better education than we’d get in L.A., so she signed us up for this collaborative program.” Buffy explained.
“Yeah,” Faith elaborated. “We have to get up at the butt crack of dawn for the bus, but it’s all good. Now what the hell are you doing here, and why did you just disappear without a trace.” William grimaced. He really didn’t want to get into this in front of the others. Buffy and h knh knew all about his past, and they accepted him as he was. The others were only just getting to know him. William didn’t want Willow or Xander to know about his true background. Before he could began to explain his presence, Willow answered for him.
“William’s related to Mr. Giles, and his son.,” the red head explained.
“No shit!” Faith exclaimed.
“Faith! Language please,” Buffy chastised her older sister. Faith stuck out her tongue in reply. “Honestly! Anyways, William,” Buffy rolled her eyes at her sister’s antics. “Wes and Giles are you relatives?”
“If by Wes and Giles, you mean my cousin Wesley and my uncle Rupert, than yes we are related.” William shrugged his shoulders. The cute girl who had been introduced as Amy decided to speak up.
“Are there any unattractive members in your family?” She smiled at William flirtatiously. “You Giles men just get better and better.” She continued to eye William as if he were a piece of forbidden candy. He was beginning to feel a little uncomfortable. Oz rescued him from his predicament.
“Down, Amy.” He stated, earning a glare from the cheerleader wannabe. “So William tell us a bit about yourself.” William blushed. Buffy gripped his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze.
“There’s not much to tell. I’m originally from London. Me mum moved to L.A. when I was about six. She took off not too long ago, and now I live with me uncle in Sunnydale.” As a fellow man of few words, Oz accepted William’s explanation without comment, much to William’s relief. Amy went to say something, but a warning glance from Faith made her reconsider. Wanting to turn the attention off of himself, William decided to ask the others a question or two of his own.
“So what do you guys do for fun?” Amy squealed in response., earning a questioning glance from William.
“Oh! We get together and head to The Bronze!” She smiled.
“The Bronze? Is that a club or something?” William asked.
“Yeah! It’s this totally cool club just outside of Sunnydale.” Willow explained.
“Dude, you should come.” Oz offered.
“I’d love to but two problems. One, I doubt if my uncle will let me out of his sight. And two, I don’t have transportation.” William stated sullenly.
“No problem man,” Oz replied. “I’ve got a van. I can pick you up.”
“And just leave Giles to us.” Xander chipped in. William grinned at his new friends. Yeah. I think I just might like it here.
Please review. ?I promise that I won’t take as long to post another chapter. My life’s been pretty crappy lately. Reviews will make me happy.
