Chapter 8
With the demons admittedly less-than-enthusiastic directions Angel, Wesley, and Cordelia found themselves, thirty minutes later, in front of a deserted warehouse next to the harbor. Gunn's pickup sat abandoned on the side of the road.
"And after you brought him here?" Wesley urged the demon to continue his account.
"And nothing! I swear! I just took off. Needed the exercise, you know? Look, uh, Crazy English Guy. I got a family, you know? A wife and eighty hungry mouths to feed. I can't be going in there with you. Them Feeders will suck me--"
"Let me explain something to you, friend. What those Feeders will do to you is nothing compared to what *I* intend to do to you, should we find ourselves in a trap. You see, the man being held in that warehouse is a dear, personal friend to Mr. Angel here," Wesley explained slowly. "I dare say you might call him family. Angel is *very* protective of his family and he has a long, long memory and good recall for faces. Now, I ask you again, what happened after you dropped Gunn off here?"
The demon cringed at Wesley's threats. "I-I told him to go through the back entrance. It seemed right. Logical, ya know? I mean, a back entrance is, you know, a back entrance."
"And?"
"And nothing! The dude didn't come out so I split."
"You just left him there?" Cordelia narrowed her eyes. "You didn't try to help him or *anything*? I think *I* might want to kill you just a little bit."
"You woulda done the same thing if you'd seen a Feeder. Them things are…" Gino winced.
"Wrong. I wouldn't have brought him here in the first place." Angel struck a blow to the back of the demon's head, rendering him unconscious. Then he reached for his sword as Wesley loaded his crossbow. "Just a suggestion, but I say we take the front entrance."

Wesley, Cordelia, and Angel entered the warehouse slowly. The ripe scent of burning leaves was nearly overpowering and Wesley indicated that they should stay low to the ground and cover their noses, uncertain of the identity of the smoldering substance. They quickly made their way through a maze of charred packing crates and blackened canisters. It appeared that a fire had destroyed most of the storage building at some point. They listened closely but neither Wesley nor Cordelia could hear anything. Angel, however, motioned for them to follow him. Relying on vampiric hearing, they allowed Angel to lead them to the rear of the warehouse.
Moving slowly, they finally drew close enough to hear what Angel had heard at the entrance. Not chanting, but a low humming. After a few moments, they realized a pattern to it. High hums and low hums, broken by soft clickings. Peering from behind a ten-foot crate, the three surveyed the scene.
Cordelia instantly identified the black, painted circle from her vision. It took up nearly forty square feet. At its center stood two of the Dak'tari and a small bundle that could only be identified when the larger of the Dak'tari moved; it was a little boy. His mouth was gagged and his hands and feet bound, but he appeared otherwise unharmed for the moment. The same could not be said for the second shape curled at the edge of the circle.
"Gunn!" Cordelia gasped and instinctively moved forward to help him.
Angel held her back, hushing her. "Not yet." He could see her weighing her options and let out a sigh of relief when she conceded to crouch next to Wesley. "Plan?"
"Hit them hard and fast?" Wesley offered, then blushed.
"Works for me."
"Which one do you think sucked Gunn?" Cordy hissed.
"There's no way to tell," Wesley said regretfully.
"Then I guess we'll just have to kill them all." With that, Angel stood and squared his shoulders. Then he did what he did best.
Wesley took aim at the Feeder nearest the boy and was pleased to note that his aim had improved since the last time he'd used his crossbow. The shot flew true and struck the Feeder between the eyes. It was down in a moment, but its partner would not be taken so easily. Holding the child as a shield, it called a warning to the others and scrambled backward as Angel worked diligently at destroying the two demons guarding what looked like a trio of Dak'tari concocting something in a large, primitive bowl.
"Blast!" Wesley's next shot struck uselessly at a packing crate when the demon he'd been aiming at dove behind it. He reloaded quickly, his eyes searching for allies and demons simultaneously.
"Wesley! Over here!" Cordelia called. A surprisingly well-executed spin-kick had a Dak'tari reeling, but Cordelia carried no weapons and the demon was recovering quickly.
"I'll take this one. You attend to the child and Gunn."
Cordelia nodded and bent low as Wes took aim over her head. This arrow had better luck than his last and struck the demon in its torso. It stumbled forward, scrambling for a weapon under the robes it wore, but a second arrow struck its forehead before the weapon could be claimed.
Across the room, Angel had dispatched the two Feeders. He noted Cordelia untying the boy's wrists and ankles and turned his attention to the last three demons. They remained at their pot still humming and clicking. As he approached them, the sound got suddenly louder and a brilliant blue burst of light struck him. He found himself flying through the air to land on the other side of the circle.
The air crackled with electricity. With little time to spare, Cordelia gave up untying the boy's knots and hefted him, instead, over her shoulder and crossed to where Gunn's prone body lay. The circle began to glow and the scent of ozone filled the air.
"PORTAL'S OPENING," Cordelia shouted over the ear-splitting hum. The floor started to shimmer and a demon began to rise from its center. While it looked vaguely similar to the Dak'tari, it was nearly ten times the size and sported several additional boneless limbs.
"TENTACLES! WHY DO THEY ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE TENTACLES?" I HATE TENTACLES!" Angel screamed.
"STRATEGY?" Wesley called, reloading his crossbow.
"KILL IT FAST AND RUN LIKE HELL?" Cordy yelled.
"WORKS FOR ME!" Wesley said, then raised the weapon to eye level, taking aim. He walked purposefully toward the demon, heedless of its twitching tentacles. Before he could be struck by the squirming appendage, he let loose a double barrel of arrows aimed straight at what he hoped was the demon's heart. Both plunged into the blue-green flesh and the ear-splitting sound quieted minutely. Behind him, he sensed Angel drawing in for an attack and moved out of the way to reload.
Without warning, he was struck from behind. Cursing his own ignorance, he turned his attack to two two remaining Dak'tari. Overconfident now that their leader, god, or whatever it was had finally arrived, they smugly clicked at each other before dealing another blow to the ex-Watcher.
"My friend Gunn over there doesn't seem to be coming out of his coma. I can only assume that means that the demon who sucked him was one of you. As I don't speak Clicks & Hiss, I'm afraid we'll have to kill you both. Terribly sorry," Wesley apologized from his spot on the floor. The demons hissed at each other, brandishing short knives. The Englishman struggled weakly to his feet. He could see Angel fighting the large demon, his body dancing with the sword, slicing and stabbing expertly at the tender skin of the demon's belly and the exposed throat when he could get a cut in.
When he was once again standing, the two Feeders lunged forward, stabbing at him with ornate knives. Wesley dodged the first swipe but felt the blade glance off his head the second time. He rubbed at the bloody cut on his forehead and scrambled backward, trying to reload his crossbow. With one arrow shill in his hand, Wesley attempted to stall them. "I have some bad news for you. Your leader is about to be killed by my friend over there. And sadly you, also, *will* die here today," Wesley went on, taking aim. The first demon clicked and hissed in a manner that could only be called mocking. Then he raised his hand as a beam of blue light began to creep slowly from its palm.
Suddenly, the second demon let out a soft grunt as a shiny silver point appeared in the middle of its chest. The second demon turned to Wesley a moment too late. The ex-Watcher lunged forward, burying the last arrow deep into the Feeder's belly. It fell to the ground as Cordelia yanked the sword from the first Feeder's chest.
"I'm sorry," Wesley said apologetically to the two twitching corpses. "But in truth, I didn't say *I* would be the one to kill you."
Cordelia dropped Gunn's sword and turned to attend to Gunn, who lay blinking and shivering at the edge of the circle. In the center of the circle, Angel was just dealing a final blow to the tentacled demon. It emitted a deafening hiss and then collapsed, foaming blue blood over the warehouse floor.
Wesley turned his attention to the little boy, removing his gag and working at the knots that bound his feet. When, at last, the boy was free he examined him closely. Angel approached them slowly, his sword crusted with blue fluid and dragging on the concrete. The boy's eyes swept from Angel to Gunn to Cordelia and back again.
"Come on," Angel said, helping Gunn to his feet. "Let's get the kid home."
