Everything happened so fast. In the small window where Buffy was staring at her feet and Tara and Willow were frozen, the man was on his feet, turning to face Tara and Buffy, energy crackling at his fingertips. Tara and Buffy saw it at the same time as Willow, but Willow was the only one who reacted in time. She struck a hand out, flinging the man away from Tara and Buffy. The mans angry gaze flashed to her, and suddenly, Willow was flung into the burning building. Her back slammed into a bookcase, causing it to fall on top of her, another one falling in front of the hole in the wall. Tara snapped out of her frozen state as smoke and flames engulfed the building, her heart dropping.
“NO!” She tried running to the burning building, but Buffy grabbed her shoulders, pulling her back, eyes wide.
“Oh god.. Oh god..” Buffy gasped to herself, her grip on Taras shoulders tightening when she tried to run again. The man started laughing,
“Serves her right. She dared to challenge Ace, and she failed, as all his enemies do!” Tara turned towards him, tears stinging her eyes. Partly from the smoke, mostly from what just happened. Buffy turned to him too, letting Tara go hesitantly to clench her fists.
“You… You..” Buffys voice cracked to a squeak. {It wasn't her! She was telling the truth.. And now..}
“Oh goddess.. We need to help her! W-We.. Buffy-!” Buffy looked towards her. Tara was slightly surprised to see tears in her eyes - hadnt she come here to kill Willow in the first place? {Its her job as a slayer.. Of course she wouldn't /want/ Willow to die. Willows her best friend! Of course she would grieve!}
“Tara.. th-the whole buildings on fire… if.. If we go in there.. We.. we’d die too.”
“I’m thinking you’ll die either way.” Tara looked back to the man, glaring at him.
“Go away. Go away right now!” She screamed, ready to attack him if needed. He laughed again, turning to walk away. Tara noticed a limp, and wondered if he was actually retreating, not walking away as if he had won. {Looks like Willow took enough out of him that he doesnt want to try and fight Buffy and I.} Tara spun back towards the library, {Willow!} Buffy only muttered a couple protests as she rushed to the doors, following anyway. The doors were glass, but Tara couldnt see through them. They were covered in smoke and soot. She tried to shove them open anyway, but something blocked them. Grimacing, Tara grabbed a rock from the side of the road, smashing the glass. She pulled her hand away quickly with a yelp, a burn appearing on her fingertip. A bookcase or something had fallen in front of the doorway. It wouldn't have mattered if she hadnt broken them, there was still no way in there. “T-There has to.. Has to be another.. A-another.. A window or something..” She stammered, going to the side of the building. There was a window in the middle of the wall, but when she rushed for it, a sickening crack sounded from the roof.
“Tara get back - The roof’s caving in!” Tara didnt have time to respond in any way before the walls and roof started to crumble. Freezing with fear, Buffy had to yank her back, pushing them both to the ground to avoid getting hit with something, pushing her head down too. After a little while, things stopped falling, and dust settled over them. Buffy and Tara lifted their heads, coughing as they looked around. Taras eyes widened to see a chunk of wall where she had been standing before Buffy had pulled her back. She pushed herself up, coughing again while she dusted herself off, shaking soot and dust from her hair. “God.. Tara, are you okay..?” Tara glanced at Buffy, nodding.
“Bit scraped up but.. Alive, thanks to you.” Buffy didn’t respond, looking behind Tara in dismay. Tara turned slowly, afraid of what she would see. She stumbled as she took in the whole mess of what used to be a building. None of the walls were standing anymore, the remainders of the roof covering the debris from them. Buffy stumbled up next to her, putting a shaky hand on her shoulder.
“Theres.. No way she could have survived that..” Tara looked down, trembling,
“I.. I know..” Tara finally broke into sobs, sinking to the ground. Buffy held her as she fell, holding her closer as she cried, the slayers eyes fixed on the rubble, tears blurring her vision.
