Chapter 6: The Tryout- part 1
It was the evening of the tryout and Buffy was a nervous wreck. She had been dancing to Faith’s stereo all day, practicing all of her most provocative moves. She was also quite certain that she had absolutely nothing to wear. No matter what she tried on, nothing looked sexy enough.
“Faith!”
Faith walked out of her bedroom to find Buffy looking frustrated in her living room and multitudes of clothes strewn about.
“Can I borrow some of your clothes tonight? Please! All of mine are way too conservative.”
Faith raised an eyebrow at that. She knew what kinds of clothes Buffy had and not many of them could be deemed conservative, except when compared with Faith’s wardrobe. “So how slutty do you want to be tonight?”
Buffy just looked at Faith and smiled. “As slutty as you can make me.”
“Hmm, sounds like a challenge, B. You sure you want me to do this?”
“Hell yes! Just one condition though… I have to be able to dance in it without flashing people.”
“Sure, ruin my fun here. Hold on I think I know of something.” Faith went into her bedroom and returned a second later.
“Here try these one.”
Buffy took the clothes from her and went into the bathroom to change. When she came back out, Faith whistled her appreciation.
“B, you look HOT in that!”
Buffy looked at her self in the mirror hanging on Faith’s bedroom door and really liked what she saw. The black leather pants fit her like a second skin and an inch wide of leg showed through the red lacing on the side of each pant leg. The shirt was a blood red sleeveless corset with black lacing and gave Buffy cleavage that she never knew she had.
“Wow. Thanks Faith, this is great.”
“Oh, no. I ain’t anywhere through with you yet.” Faith grabbed her arm and dragged her into the bathroom. She pulled out a curling iron, various brushes, oodles of hair products, and tons of makeup. Buffy eyed all of it warily as Faith set to work on her. Once she was done, Buffy could hardly recognize herself. Her hair was in soft ringlets, her eyes were smokey and dark, and her lips were stained a deep red, just a shade darker than the shirt she was wearing. Faith stood back to admire her work.
“Not bad, if I do say so myself.”
Buffy was in shock at her transformation. The look was almost goth but it really suited her. It would just take a little getting used to.
“Come on or we’re going to be late.” Faith said as she dragged Buffy away from her reflection.
After Buffy pulled on a pair of black leather stiletto boots, she and Faith headed out to Coyote Ugly.
“Spikey, What do you think of this one?” Harmony was standing in front of him showing off her hundredth outfit.
Spike didn’t look up from his script. “Fine.”
“But Blondie-bear you didn’t even look!” Harmony’s voice was raising an octave and Spike looked up before her voice took on its ear piercing quality.
“Fine,” He said and then immediately went back to his script.
“You love that movie more than me!” Harmony whined before going to try on another one of her outfits.
“I love syphilis more than you.” Spike said under his breath as she left.
Harmony returned a moment later. “Okay, baby, this one is it, don’t you think?”
Spike looked up at her. She was wearing faded, tight, blue jeans and a light pink bandeau top, it bared quite a bit of stomach and cleavage. Spike couldn’t deny that she looked hot in the outfit.
“It’s quite fetching, pet.” That earned him a beaming smile from Harmony.
“I know! I’m so gonna win tonight.” Harmony did a little squeal as she ran back off to finish getting ready.
Spike shook his head at her retreating form and went back to studying his script, every once in while scribbling a note down.
“K, Spikey, ready to go?”
“What? Go where?” Spike was confused, he had no plans tonight other than get his lines memorized for the next day.
Harmony looked at him as if he was stupid. “Duh! Coyote Ugly tryout, remember? You said that you would go with me.”
“I did?”
“Yeah huh.”
Spike really didn’t want to go, but he couldn’t think of a good excuse not to. He stood up and grabbed his duster off its hook.
“All right, then. Let’s go.”
Harmony squealed in delight and practically bounced out the door, with a less than enthused Spike following her.
Faith and Buffy arrived at the bar at 9:45 pm and the line to get in was insane, but luckily, Buffy didn’t have to wait in that line. There was a separate line for tryouts. Faith waited in the long line for her turn to enter the bar while Buffy signed up for an audition.
Soon, Buffy was ushered into the back where the other tryouts were waiting. She was wringing her hands when she heard a voice next to her. She turned to find a blonde woman, wearing jeans and a pink bandeau top, eyeing the other girls.
“What did you just say?”
Harmony eyed the small woman next to her with barely concealed contempt in her eyes. Buffy nearly flinched from the look.
“I said..” Harmony bit out slowly as if she was talking to a dumb child. “All these girls should just go home because there is no way they are going to beat me.”
Buffy took an immediate dislike to the woman. “Is that so?”
“Duh, look at me. I’m like sooo much hotter than anyone else.”
Buffy had to laugh at that. This woman sure did think a lot about herself.
Harmony narrowed her eyes. How dare she laugh at her like that! “What’s so funny?”
“You and your conceitedness. Do you really think you are hotter than anyone? Give me a break.” Buffy rolled her eyes at her and left to go join the rest of the group.
Harmony called out after her. “I’m gonna tell my boyfriend you were mean to me and you’ll be sorry!”
Buffy turned around, sarcasm dripping from her voice. “Ooooh, I’m so scared.”
“Bitch!”
“Vapid whore!”
The two women glaring daggers at each other were soon interrupted by a loud whistle. They turned simultaneously to see a leggy brunette standing with her hands on her hips.
“Oh goody, rapt attention. Welcome to the Coyote Tryouts. I’m Cordelia Chase, head coyote of the LA bar. I’m in charge of finding out which one of you dogs can be turned into a coyote. The way this is going to work is there will be three stages. After each stage, a number of you will be asked to leave. If there is more than one of you left after the third stage, then there will be a tiebreaker round. The first stage is dancing. Each one of you will dance solo on the bar for the length of a song. Make it a crowd pleaser because the decision tonight all rides on the crowds opinion of you. The second stage is all about attitude and bartending. If you don’t have bartending skills then you better have an impressive attitude. We will ask the crowd to tip their favorite potential, whether you stay or go has to do with how much money you make within a set amount of time. The third stage is body/penalty shots. Each of you will have to perform one of each on one of our bar patrons. Again, whoever the audience likes the best is going to win. If we have more than one potential still left then we set you all loose behind the bar to do as you wish. This last tiebreaking stage blends the previous stages together to see how you do. Any questions at all?”
One girl out of the fifteen there spoke up. “Are we allowed to drink during this?”
“Good question…”
“Emily”
“Emily. Yes, you are allowed to have a few drinks but never to the point of tipsy or beyond! If you get drunk or are walking that line, you will be asked to leave. Any other questions?”
Silence.
“Good. Are you guys ready?”
Cordelia heard a few mumbled responses. “You guys have got to be kidding me! If that’s the best you can do, you might as well leave now. I ask again… Are you guys ready?!”
The entire group of girls shouted various versions of ‘yes’ at her and Cordelia flinched. “Jeez, you didn’t have to blow my eardrums out.” Cordelia winked at them.
“Okay lets get started.” Cordelia checked her roster. “Looks like Emily Cartwright is first.”
Spike was already working on his third beer when the first girl came out. He watched her dance and thought she was cute but not cut out for this. The confidence just wasn’t there. He got bored watching her and decided to step outside for a moment to smoke a cigarette. He was outside and didn’t hear when the announcer called the next girl.
“Buffy Summers”
Spike finished his cigarette and walked back inside to see a different girl up on the bar. She was a vision in red and black, and confidence just radiated off her. He thought that she looked a lot like his Buffy but chided himself for thinking so. Stop thinking that every blonde girl you see is her, you git. It has been over a month; get over it already!
Spike convinced himself it wasn’t her, but couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She was a great dancer and had all the men’s rapt attention. She was infinitely better than the girl before and Spike had no doubts who was going to get the job. There was no one else who could possibly top her, in his mind. Except for Buffy, but she’s not here.
Soon the song ended and the red angel got down from the bar as the announcer repeated her name for the crowd.
“And that was Buffy Summers! Next we have Kendra Jamison.”
Spike thought he heard wrong and chalked it up to his wishful thinking until he overheard two men mention her name in their conversation. Bloody hell, she is here. Spike stood in shock as the truth settled in.
Buffy had the most amazing adrenaline rush as she made her way to the back room where the other potentials were waiting. The crowd went wild for her, making her feel like she was on cloud nine. She made her way over to a vacant couch and threw herself on it. She was exhausted, she danced the hardest she has ever danced and by the crowd reaction, it paid off.
Soon the next stage of the tryout will begin. Buffy was eternally grateful to Faith for showing her how to mix various drinks, it was going to help her out immensely.
Harmony was next and the two women shared a spiteful glare with each other as she headed out of the room.
Buffy rested as the rest of the girls had their turns on the bar. Soon she was called with the rest of them to stand on the bar.
Cordelia spoke into the microphone. “All right girls, this is the first elimination round. When I call your name get off the bar, you are out of the competition. Those remaining on the bar will continue. If you do not wish to continue, get off now. Everybody ready? Good. Emily Cartwright…Kendra Jamison…”
Buffy heard the list carry on for five more names and to her relief hers wasn’t called. The competition was down to eight and, unfortunately, Harmony was still in.
Spike breathed a sigh of relief when Buffy’s name was not called. He was going to do everything in his power to make sure she wins this competition. As the remaining girls filed off, he caught the look that passed between Harmony and his Buffy. So the birds don’t like each other much. Harmony will really hate her when Buffy wins and I take her home with me. Spike smiled at the thought.
