Chapter Seven
William picked himself up off of the floor, walked over to the nightstand beside his bed and placed the cell phone which Liam had given him, into the top drawer. He sat down on his bed and smiled, recalling the conversation that he’d had with his friend. William could not believe that there was someone in his life who seemed to care so much for his personal well being. His own mother didn’t give a damn about him, so it pretty much amazed William that someone like Liam went out of his way repeatedly to ensure that he was ok. William was very aware that Liam had his own share of problems . His job was risky; very risky. Sure William’s profession held the potential of bodily harm not to mention there were health concerns, but Liam’s job required that he break the law, along with the arms and legs of other people. Not that there was anything legal about prostitution. However, William always felt victimized after turning a trick. He knew that he could never purposely hurt another person . William held out his arms, looked himself over and laughed. Not likely that anyone would be intimidated by ya anyways mate. He knew that he was pretty compact for a male. In William’s chosen profession, his small frame was an asset. It gave him an enigma like quality. He’d worked his pretty boy looks to his advantage. Yeah mate, you’re a real metro sexual. He laughed at his own expense before heading towards the bathroom adjoined to his bedroom. Good. At least a bloke’ll have a bit of privacy.
William quickly took care of the business of relieving himself, before turning on the shower. He adjusted the water to a comfortable temperature, stripped down and stepped into the welcoming, hot spray, letting the water momentarily wash away the concerns that he had of fitting in with the other two Giles men. As he scrubbed William began to contemplate the elder Giles. His uncle was a complete surprise. William remembered being frightened of him as a boy. He always seemed so serious compared to the free spirit that was William’s mother. Not that Rupert wasn’t downright frightening now. Hell I gave him my best badass impression and he gave it right back tenfold. Only I don’t think he was fakin’. Still it’s not like he’s been a jerk really. Claims to have me best interests at heart and all that. Maybe he means it. William rinsed off allowing his thoughts to shift to Wesley. Now that one’s a real piece of work. An arsehole if I ever saw one. Thinks he’s better then everyone else he does. William turned off the water and reached out from behind the curtain for the bath towel which hung from a bar on the wall. He unfolded it bringing it to his nose in order to test its freshness. Oh well. Smells clean enough. William dried himself off, letting the towel fall to the floor when he was finished. He stepped over it and went to his room to find something to wear. He decided to forego underwear until the following day. Honestly, he didn’t see the necessity of buying the garments being that he hadn’t worn them in years. He’d admitted as much to Liam when the man had insisted that William throw four packages into the cart as they’d shopped. Liam had looked at him without amusement before dryly stating that easy access would not be an issue where William was going. William laughed at the memory. Focusing on his clothing he settled for a pair of faded blue jeans and a plain white t-shirt. William descended the stairs barefoot in a search for his uncle and cousin. Hearing voices coming from the kitchen, William made his way inside. Nodding at the two men, he sat on a stool at the counter beside where Wesley stood. The other man was busily tossing a variety of vegetables in a large bowl with a wooden spoon and fork. Upon seeing William enter the kitchen Wesley’s mouth had gone dry. For heaven’s sake he’s your bloody cousin man! Get a grip on yourself! Disturbed by his attraction for the boy, Wesley replaced the feelings with anger. He looked down at William’s feet and smirked.
“My, don’t we just look comfortable.” William looked down at his bare feet and blushed. Rupert, looked up from closing the oven door and smiled warmly at his nephew. He noticed William’s lack of shoes as well.
“Excellent.” He smiled. “I’m pleased that you are beginning to feel at home here.” William grinned shyly before looking around the kitchen questioningly. He felt as if should be helping in some way.
“Uncle Rupert,” he asked nervously. “Is there anything that I can do to help?” Rupert, looked at his nephew in surprise. He wants to help?
“Why certainly.” He pointed to the cabinets behind William’s head. “In there you will find plates and glasses. If you’d like to sit the table, it would be most appreciated.” William nodded, stood and set about completing the task. He walked in an unnecessarily wide arch around Wesley as he passed him by. William opened the cabinet and pulled out three plates. He brought the plates into the dinning room where he placed one at the head of the table for Rupert. William placed the other two plates to the left and right of his uncle’s seat, and then went back to the kitchen to find glassware. He set three glasses on the table, then asked his uncle where he could find the forks and knives.
“In the drawer next to the sink.” Rupert replied. I’m glad the boy is making the effort to fit in. “I hope that pot roast and potatoes are to your liking?” William shrugged indifferently. Wesley rolled his eyes and walked the salad out to the table. He would have walked right into William, had he not stepped out of the way. Rupert gritted his teeth trying to maintain his already thinning patience with his son. Once dinner was on the table, all three men helped themselves to as much as they wanted. Noticing the large amount of food on William’s plate, Rupert raised an eyebrow in concern. He was further surprised when William began to shovel food into his mouth quickly keeping his eyes on his plate.
“Good God William,” Wesley exclaimed. “Do you inhale between bites?” William began to cough, choking on the mouth full of food that he had been in the process of swallowing. He reached for his glass, taking several large gulps of iced tea in order to wash down the food that was lodged in his throat. Thoroughly embarrassed, William wiped his mouth with his napkin. With downcast eyes, William addressed his uncle.
“May I please be excused?”
“No you may not,” Rupert Giles replied stiffly. “You are far too thin already.” Fed up with his son’s obnoxious behavior, Rupert turned to Wesley who had the nerve to be grinning. “Wesley Eugene Giles! Do stop acting like an arse and refrain from further antagonizing your cousin! I’d like to finish the rest of the meal in peace if you do not mind.” Wesley blanched. He glared across the table at William who now sat picking at his food. In an effort to lighten the mood Rupert turned to his nephew. He looked the boy over noticing that William had his hair styled differently than he’d been wearing it upon his arrival. It was now totally slicked back devoid of any of his natural curls.
“You’re wearing your hair differently,” Rupert said casually. “I think I prefer the curls. They make you look closer to your own age.” Wesley looked over at William. He gazed at the boy’s hair which currently lay stiffly atop his head. Yes. He silently agreed. The curls are more lovely. Not that he doesn’t look very pleasing now. He kept his opinion to himself. William looked up and grinned.
“Hair gel.” William stated simply. “A gift from Liam.” Rupert thought back to the young man who had accompanied his nephew to their doorstep. He laughed.
“Oh yes, Liam.” He continued to chuckle. At William’s questioning glance, Rupert explained what he found so humorous. “Is he always so finely coiffed?” William continued to look confused. He looked at his cousin who seemed to be holding back a smile. Wesley noticed William’s befuddlement and chose to take pity on him for once.
“What my father means is that your friend strikes him as someone having a rather large preoccupation with his hair.” Instantly enlightened, William’s eyes widened in merriment. He joined in on his uncle’s laughter.
“Well, yeah. That would describe Liam, I suppose.” Rupert wiped his eyes and sighed.
“I beg your pardon William really,” he began. “I mean no offense toward your friend. Liam seems like a very nice young man.” Actually, William had teased Liam about his hair on more than one occasion. It was one of the few things that he knew of that was guaranteed to get a rise out of Liam. Perhaps his uncle and he could double team on the man when he came to visit.
“None taken.” William yawned. He was suddenly quite tired again. He tried to blink off his sleepiness in vain. Rupert recognized the boy’s exhaustion. William had undergone a very trying day.
“Why don’t you settle in for the night? Tomorrow you can head in with Wesley and myself to the high school.”
“High School?” William asked confused once more.
“Yes. I called a colleague of mine while you were napping earlier,” Rupert clarified. “She has offered to give you a competency examination to assess your correct placement. As I am the school librarian, and Wesley here is my assistant, you may ride in with us each morning once you have been properly assigned.” He finished. Oh look! A chip off the old block. William thought glancing at Wesley. Already dreading the approaching day, but knowing that there was no use arguing, William stood to clear his plate and glass from the table. He said his goodnights to Rupert and Wesley, and solemnly made his way to his room. He pulled off his jeans, leaving them balled up on the floor, and crawled back into bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
A half an hour later, Rupert Giles peeked in on his nephew. Good. He’s asleep. He looks like an angel lying there. Rupert looked around and shook his head at the state of William’s room. He picked up the jeans and folded them up, then placed them in a drawer. He noticed that the bathroom light was still on and went to turn it out. Spotting the clothing and the wet towel on the floor, he picked them up and placed them in the hamper which stood across from the toilet. Yes, You are definitely Rebecca’s son. Making his way back out to the bedroom, Rupert glanced at William hesitantly before bending down and kissing his brow.
“Pleasant dream’s William.” He left the room quietly, closing the door softly behind him.
Did you like it? I return to work tomorrow (UGGH!!) I’ll try to post as soon as possible, but I won’t be able to post daily. Sorry, but I won’t leave you all hanging for long. You guys have been great. ~Tri
