Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Chapter Fifty-Two
Gunn leapt over a fence and quickly joined the others who were pinned down, the rest of the group was as well and he wanted to find out what they were going to do next.
“How we doing?” Gunn asked taking in the state of his friends.
“So far it's a tie.” Cordelia replied.
“We haven't got up to Dawn, but then neither has anyone else.” Xander pointed out, relieved that at least they were stalling the baddies.
“Someone's up there.” Spike told them not taking his eyes off the platform high above them. It was hard to make out but he knew that there was more than one person up there and that was not good because they knew that it wasn’t one of their people.
“Okay, we gotta charge or something.” Gunn suggested, needing to get into the fight again.
“We tried that.” Xander told him before looking back at his lover who was still staring upwards with a look of great concentration on his face. Xander didn’t know that at right that moment Spike could hear Willow’s voice in his head.
“Spike. Can you hear me?” He heard.
“Yeah, loud and clear.” Spike answered, he didn’t know that Willow and Tara were stuck at the other end of the warehouse but he knew telepathic communication when he heard it.
“Is there someone up there with Dawn?” Willow asked without her lips moving.
“Yeah, can't tell who.”
“Are you talking to us?” Xander wanted to know concerned that his lover had apparently started to talk to himself in the middle of a battle.
“Get up there. Go now.” Willow commanded but Spike only peered out uncertainly as the minions and crazies were still in battle stance.
“Yeah, but…” he began to protest.
“Go!” Willow demanded and Spike had learnt long ago to never argue with a witch so he did what he was told and hoped that Willow knew what she was doing. Xander, Gunn and Cordelia watched in amazement as Spike got up and charged towards the stairs. Spike was thankful when the entire crowd of minions and crazies parted into two halves like the Red Sea. Spike ran through as they yelled in fear at the invisible force pushing them away from the vampire. Spike reached the stairs and leapt up them without slowing down, knowing that he had to get to Dawn, he had to save her. Spike reached the last level before the top and began climbing the ladder.
At the top Doc had produced a pocket-watch and was studying it carefully while Dawn watched on terrified.
“Well. What do you know? It's just about that time.” He told the terrified young woman as he pocketed the stopwatch. Just then Spike appeared behind him right in Dawn’s line of vision.
“Spike!” She called out in hope and Doc immediately whirled around as Spike strode slowly forward.
“Doesn't a fella stay dead when you kill him?” Spike asked not taking his eyes off Doc.
“Look who's talking.”
“Come on, Doc. Let's you and me have a go.” Spike tempted in his most dangerous voice every inch of him screaming out that he was the Big Bad and he wasn’t about to let some old demon take his title.
“I do have a prior appointment.” Doc didn’t take the challenge as he tapped the knife against his hand.
“This won't take long.” Spike told him moving slowly closer.
“No, I don't imagine it will.” Doc said just as steadily before Spike lunged forward. Doc sidestepped and managed to grab Spike around the neck before thrusting his knife into Spike’s back. Spike gasped in pain as Dawn gasped in shock that someone could hurt Spike so quickly. Spike twisted around out of Doc’s grip and pulled the knife out of his body so that it fell to the ground. Spike now found himself standing between Doc and Dawn, right where he needed to be.
“You don't come near the girl, Doc.” Spike stated, meaning every word, he would die before he let the Doc near Dawn or anyone else looking to finish the ritual.
“I don't smell a soul anywhere on you. Why do you even care?” Doc asked, actually curious to the answer because this vampire was not acting at all in the way a vampire should.
“I made a promise to a lady.” Was Spike’s simple answer, he had promised Joyce he would look after Dawn, and that was what he was going to do.
“Oh?” Was all Doc said before his long tongue appeared shooting out at Spike who managed to duck but Doc was ready. The old man was surprisingly agile as he dropped to his knees and pulled Spike’s legs out from under him. Spike fell to the floor and they grappled for long moments. Suddenly they were on their feet but Doc had the upper hand. Doc was holding onto Spike, tightly pinning his arms behind his back and holding him near the edge of the platform. Struggling with all his might Spike just could not get free.
“Then I'll send the lady your regrets.” Doc stated holding Spike so close to the edge and Spike knew that he was going to fall, he had failed and Doc would do what he wanted to Dawn. Spike’s eyes met Dawn’s as Spike whispered one word.
“No.” Doc pushed Spike over the edge and Spike hurtled towards the ground hearing Dawn’s screams from behind him.
“Aaah! No!!” Spike fell for a long time until he landed amidst a pile of bricks. He managed not to scream in pain but he couldn’t help the whimper and knew that he wouldn’t be moving for a while.

Faith had found a big piece of pipe and was using it to pummel Glory about the head. Glory had blood running out of her nose but she didn’t have enough time to regroup between blows in order to stop Faith.
“You're just a mortal. You couldn't understand my pain.”
“Then I'll just have to settle for causing it.” Faith retorted swinging her pipe again. Glory reeled to the side and recovered before turning back.
“You can't kill me.” Glory tried to reason.
“No ... but my arm's not even tired yet.” Faith replied before hitting Glory again. Glory fell to her knees gasping and on the verge of tears. Glory looked up at Faith pleadingly.
“Stop it.”
“You're a god.” Faith hit Glory again and she fell on her back on the floor. “Make it stop.” Faith started hitting her with the pipe again and again and again. When she stopped again Glory was lying on the ground her face covered in blood. She morphed into Ben and Faith stopped hitting. Faith had made a pact that she would never take a human life again.
“I'm sorry,” Ben apologised.
“Tell her it's over. She missed her shot. She goes. She ever, ever comes near me and mine again...” Faith let the threat hang open.
“We won't. I swear.” Ben promised hurting all over. Faith dropped the hammer and hurried away knowing that something was wrong with Dawn and that she would have to take Ben’s word as truth. Ben just laid there too damaged to move, coughing violently.
“I guess we're stuck with each other, huh baby?” He spoke before starting to breathe painfully. Xander came over and knelt beside him.
“Can you move?” Xander asked concerned.
“Need a ... a minute. She could've killed me.”
“No she couldn't. Faith has killed before and it took her on a path that she’s still paying for. She knows that if she ever takes a human life again there will never be redemption for her. And sooner or later Glory will re-emerge, and ... make Faith pay for that weakness. And the world with her. Faith even knows that... and still she couldn't condemn her soul to save us all from future pain. She's a hero, you see. She's not like us.” Xander told the injured man seriously knowing what he had to do.
“Us?” Ben asked wondering how this young man knew of his deal with Glory. Xander suddenly reached down and placed his hand over Ben’s nose and mouth, holding them shut. Ben struggled weakly as Xander kept him still, effectively killing him. Xander felt no remorse for what he was doing and knew that he would do it again in a heartbeat to save those he cared about.

Dawn’s screams could be heard throughout the construction site. Doc had cut thin slashes through the dress material and Dawn’s stomach. Dawn cried out and sobbed in pain.
“Shallow cuts... shallow cuts...” Doc murmured as he studied his handiwork. Doc made another cut and Dawn cried out again.
“Let the blood ... flow...” The blood was dripping down Dawn’s legs and over feet dripping over her toes and down into the air below.
“...free.”
“Dawn.” Faith exclaimed when she saw the picture in front of her.
“Faith!” Dawn gasped through the pain she was feeling and knowing that the world was going to end because of her. Doc whirled around as Faith strode forward.
“This should be interesting.” Faith however didn’t even pause just walked right up to Doc and pushed him off the edge like he had done to Spike earlier. Faith quickly made her way to Dawn’s side concerned about the girl.
“Here.” Faith quickly undid Dawn’s bonds.
“Faith, it hurts.” Dawn sobbed. They were unaware of the blood dripping off Dawn’s bloody feet.
“I got it. Come here. You're gonna be okay.” Faith reassured the younger girl. A few drops of Dawn’s blood dripped over the edge and in midair they meet something and a small circle of light appears quickly growing. Faith led a limping Dawn across the platform to the tower entrance. Dawn stopped and turned to Faith knowing that it was too late.
“Go!” Faith tried to convince the Summer’s girl to move.
“Faith, it's started.” Faith turned and they could both see the light from the portal below their feet. Faith turned back to Dawn as they felt the earth below them tremble and knowing that all sorts of creatures were being let loose in the area and it would soon spread to the whole world.
“I'm sorry.” Dawn apologised.
“It doesn't matter.” Faith tried to reassure her but then had to quickly reach out and grab Dawn as she tried to run past back towards the portal.
“What are you doing?” Faith demanded.
“I have to jump. The energy.” Dawn explained knowing that it was the only way to keep everyone safe though it was the hardest decision she had ever made.
“It'll kill you.” Faith reasoned.
“I know.” Dawn told her softly and at Faith’s look she explained. “I know about the ritual. I have to stop it.”
“No.” Faith told her decisively. Just then the tower shook beneath them making them both stumble and cling to each other harder.
“I have to. Look at what's happening.” Dawn explained before gesturing to the sky that was laced with crackling lightening. A huge dragon suddenly materialised out of the portal and flew off as they watched.
“Faith, you have to let me go. Blood starts it, and until the blood stops flowing, it'll never stop.” Dawn knew this was the hardest discission of her life but she had to do it, she had to jump. “You know you have to let me. It has to have the blood.” Dawn explained, “I wish there was another way, any other way for me to stay but there isn’t.” Dawn and Faith did not hear over the sounds of the portal opening two very important words.
“Wish Granted.” The vengeance demon took one last sad look at the two young woman who had been friends with her best friend during her last days before she teleported away. Faith however was having an epiphany of sorts. She knew. She knew what she had to do. She knew it would work. And Faith knew it was the only way she was ever going to redeem herself. This way she would square the debt she had with the deceased Buffy. Faith turned around slowly and looked at the platform extending into the air. In the distance holes were opening in the sky but at the same time the sun was rising on a new day and it was beautiful. Faith knew what she had to do and she was at peace with it. Faith turned back to Dawn who had somehow seemed to catch on to what Faith was planning to do.
“Faith NO!” The distraught teenager pleaded.
“Dawnie, I have to.” Faith told her and Dawn felt tears spring up in her eyes at the pet name her elder sister had always used.
“No!” Dawn begged not willing to lose this person who had become so much like a sister to her. She had lost her sister and her mother she didn’t think she could lose another.
“Listen to me. Please, there's not a lot of time, listen.” Faith pleaded and Dawn fell silent though she still continued to sob as her heart broke.
“I love you. I will always love you. You are the sister I never had.” Faith had started sobbing now, knowing the pain of those that would be left behind, but she was still at peace with her decision. It was the right decision. “But this is something I have to do. Tell Angel that I get it. The good fight. You never know until you've been tested. I get that now. And give my love to everyone, specially Xander, he never gave up on me.” Dawn cried harder sobbing into Faith’s chest and the dark-haired girl moved Dawn’s long hair out of her face. “You have to take care of everyone now. You have to take care of each other. You have to be strong. Dawn, the hardest thing in this world ... is to live in it. That’s something that took me a long time to figure out. How to live. So be Brave. Live. For Me.” Faith stroked the side of Dawn’s face one last time before kissing her on the cheek as Dawn continued to cry. Faith turned and ran down the platform completely at peace with herself. Faith swan-dived off the end of the platform and into the portal. As Dawn looked on unable to look away Faith fell into the portal and hung there motionlessly. The portal then began to shrink into nothingness and disappear as Faith’s lifeless body hit the ground.
Dawn turned away from the sunrise and sobbing made her way slowly down the tower. It was hard going as her stomach was hurting but she did it in a daze unable to make her mind fathom what she had just witnessed. At the bottom she found Tara and Willow waiting to sweep her up in their arms. A badly beaten Spike and Xander were gathered around a near catatonic Angel. While Gunn and Cordelia hung onto each other in their mutual grief. Nobody could take their eyes off Faith’s lifeless body as they thought of the willing sacrifice she had made.
SHE DIED SAVING THE WORLD!
