Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Bubbysbub fought sickness to send this back so she deserves much praise.

Reviews: LadyVirgo, I'd say Ben and Glory are as crazy as each other. Glad you liked the sex as it was the last sex scene for this. Enjoy
Daeomae - They had to release some steam before the fight. Course they had sex.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.
Chapter Fifty
Dawn was back in the office room at the construction sight. She was sitting on the floor with her knees to her chest and her eyes closed attempting to pretend that she wasn’t here, that she was somewhere else. She knew that Ben was nearby but she ignored him until he spoke.
“They, uh ... said you have to put this on ... for the ceremony.” Dawn looked up at him and glared, hating him for being ultimately so spineless.
“What if I don't?” She asked as if it wasn’t a big deal.
“Come on, just…” Ben cajoled but Dawn interrupted him, not wanting to listen to his crap.
“What if I don't like the colour?” She asked sarcastically.
“Look, I ... I wish there was another way.” Ben tried to be sympathetic but Dawn wasn’t having any of it. He had betrayed her and Dawn knew that she could hold a grudge.
“And I wish you'd fall on your head and drown in your own barf, so ... I guess we're both disappointed.” She snarked worthy of Spike.
“I think ... it'll be quick.” Ben tried to comfort her.
“Actually, sir, the bleeding is quite a slow process to give the portal time to…” The helpful minion who had been quietly standing in the corner found himself cut off by a very annoyed Ben.
“Thank you ... for the information.” He turned to Dawn and adopted his most helpful expression. “I'll do what I can to…”
“Change.” Dawn demanded fed up with Ben’s pretend helpfulness when he was only helping himself.
“What?” Ben asked confused.
“Change. Be her. I don't wanna look at you.” The teenage girl demanded.
“Dawn, I don't think you wanna…”
“Be Glory. Be Glory. Glory! Glory! Glory!” Dawn yelled at the top of her very capable lungs.
“Will you just stop…” Ben began but he turned into Glory mid sentence.
“…shouting already?” The hellbitch finished as Dawn scowled at her. The immortal shook out the garment she had in her hands to find that it was a medieval-style dress obviously supposed to be worn by the sacrifice during the ceremony.
“So, what's the hubbub, bub?” Glory turned to Dawn. “What do you got against old Benjy?” Glory asked actually curious; she had been sure that Dawn would have wanted the seemingly mortal male around instead of herself.
“He's a monster. At least you're up-front about it.” Dawn answered honestly.
“Don't be so hard on the boy. He just wants to live. Most guys would do the same. Besides, he's probably the reason your friends are still alive. That little nagging pinch of humanity that makes me go for the hurt instead of the kill. It's gotta be Ben.” Glory reflected.
“Or maybe you just can't take them.” Dawn challenged. Without answering Glory tossed the dress at Dawn who instinctively grabbed one end unfortunately Glory still held the other and she yanked at it pulling Dawn to her feet. Dawn doesn’t cower though but instead faced Glory with a death glare worthy of her older sister.
“Hmm, funny thing. You've been here for a few hours now, and I haven't seen anyone galloping in to save you. They probably knows what a terrible mistake that'd be.” Glory loved playing mind games and Dawn was making it fun.
“They’re not afraid of you.” Dawn stated in complete faith that she was right.
“Oh no, sweetie baby. I'm talking about the ritual. 'Cause you know I bleed you, the portals open, but once you die they close. The faster you die, the better for your sorry species.” Dawn tried to process that disturbing information but Glory gave her no time, placing her hands on the side of Dawn’s face and revelling in the look of pure fear in Dawn’s eyes.
“I'm bettin' they know that. Since you’re not actually real, I'm guessin' they’re not gonna show. And if they do...” Dawn winced in pain as Glory’s fingers tightened on her head. “...it might not be to save you.” Glory shoved Dawn aside. The teenager fell to the floor as Glory just smirked at her. The hell god threw the dress at her. “Now get dressed before I do it for you.”
Dawn lay there for long minutes not able to move, scared that Glory was right, though the rational part of her mind knew that Angel, Spike, Xander, Willow, Faith and the others would not give up on her, would never willingly abandon her even if it did seem to be the best thing for the world. She slowly dragged herself up and stared at the dress that she would be going to her death in. Trying not to think of anything the teenager slowly changed before folding her clothes carefully and laying them on the chair. She needed something to occupy her hands so she took her time making them neat and then kneeling down to arrange her sneakers neatly in front of the chair. Dawn would have loved to slip the shoes back on but knew that she wasn’t allowed.
“Okay, campers, it's almost stab time.” Dawn jumped in fright at the words and stared at Glory not wanting to die. “You two, get her.” Glory commanded and the minions went for Dawn who backed away, starting to scream in complete mind-numbing terror.
“No. No! Aah! ANGEL!” She screamed wishing the dark haired vampire would suddenly appear. Dawn continued to scream as the minions grabbed her arms and dragged her away. She just couldn’t stop screaming even if she wanted to. Glory watched them go with a sinister smile on her face. Soon she would be back in her own hell dimension and the other hellgods would pay for kicking her out.
“See you in a few.” The hellgod quipped. Dawn just whimpered as she was dragged outside to where the crazy people were still working. Sparks were flying from some welding but Dawn could only stare at the enormous structure in the middle of the lot. The huge tower was basically made out of scaffolding and did not look stable at all. At the top of the tower a narrow walkway protruded out into the air and Dawn had a sinking feeling that this was where she would end up as they dragged her up the structure.

Angel was wielding a broadsword he had found and was testing it out making sure it was perfectly balanced. The others were grabbing weapons when Xander made his way out of the back holding a crossbow.
“We on schedule?” He asked. Spike moved past him just brushing their arms together and Xander felt all the hairs on his arm raise trying to get closer to his lover. Xander did his best to ignore the attraction as now wasn’t the time and instead focused on Willow.
“Yes, it's time.” She confirmed after doing a quick spell to determine how close they were to the time when the ritual had to take place.
“Alright people lets saddle up,” Spike called as he left the building holding a bag full of spare weapons, his lovers right behind him.
“Everybody knows their jobs. Remember, the ritual starts, we all die. And I'll kill anyone who comes near Dawn.” Faith reiterated taking her place near the front of the mob of people all ready to fight Glory and her lackeys or to at least die trying, which was a much more likely scenario.
“Well, not exactly the St. Crispin's Day speech, was it?” Spike remarked expecting more from the Slayer.
“We few...” Angel remarked solemnly walking next to Spike. “ ...we happy few.”
“We band of buggered.” Spike added knowing their chances of saving the world and getting out of there all alive was nil. Xander walked beside them silently.
Angel led the way knowing where they were going, where Glory was going to try and complete the ritual. The others all followed as a group and they were quite a big group with Gunn’s former gang with them. Cordelia was carrying a baseball bat while Gunn had a short sword, and wishing that Wesley was there with them instead of in a hospital bed in LA. Angel turned around the corner and stopped short as he took in the sight of the construction site across the road. There were a few changes since he sussed it out earlier in the night. Xander stood next to him and leant into Angel needing the reassurance.
“Holy fuck,” Faith murmured.
“Shpadoinkle.” Xander seconded.
“What is that?” Cordelia asked awed at the sight of the unstable structure.
“The portal must open up there.” Willow explained.
“Alright, lets go,” Angel commanded.
“Got everything?” Gunn asked hoping they hadn’t left anything behind that they could use.
“Could use a little courage.” Willow remarked. Spike’s hand was suddenly in front of her face holding a small silver flask.
“The real kind.” Willow clarified not taking the flask. “But thanks.” Spike nodded before opening it up and taking a swig, before he could put it away though Faith grabed it and took a healthy swig before handing it back. Spike didn’t say a thing as he put it away and Angel rolled his eyes at his childe’s antics. Without talking they moved across the street and into the bustling construction site. They snuck in, surprised that no one was paying attention to them. The crazy people were going about their work and Xander soon spotted why the minions and Glory hadn’t realised they were there yet. They were distracted. The minions were contained in a force field that even Willow couldn’t create while Glory did battle with an elderly male who could obviously use the magics. For a moment Xander thought that somehow it was Giles back from the dead to do battle with the hellgod. Then the man stepped into the light and Xander realised his mistake; it wasn’t Giles at all but Ethan Rayne.
“What the fuck is he doing here?” Spike asked, but no one could answer. However Xander remembered a special ring in Giles effects and an inscription. Maybe Ethan was here to exact revenge on the creature who had killed his one-time lover?
“Shatter.” They heard Ethan command and watched in awe as much of the equipment around Glory shattered into sharp shards and flew towards Glory, slicing her dress into shreds but not actually hurting her much to their disappointment.
“Is that it? Is that the best you can do?” Glory provoked the distraught and homicidal chaos mage. “You think I care about all this, all the trappings?” She pulled off the shreds of the ceremonial gown to reveal a long plain black negligee. Glory backhanded Ethan sending him flying into a pile of rubble.
“Now, watching your little boyfriend kill himself.” Ethan lifted his head, his eyes black but Glory didn’t notice to caught up in provoking the stupid mortal. “That was something to treasure.” Ethan got to his feet completely furious, it filled his veins with an icy fire and he could not think beyond the need for revenge. The need to make this stuck-up immortal pay. He didn’t notice the trickle of blood coming out of his mouth or the Scoobies watching in awe. A black bag slid across the dusty concrete until it rested next to Ethan. The bag opened without the mage touching it.
“What's this? Bag of tricks?” Glory asked amused and completely forgetting about the ritual she should have been performing. The minions were still trying to escape from the shield they were behind and could not remind their god. A flock of daggers flew up out of the bag to hover in mid air.
“Bag of knives.” Ethan quipped humourlessly. The daggers flew towards Glory who battered them aside easily. “Spirit of serpents now appear.” Ethan commanded. Glory was getting fed up with this and threw a work bench at Ethan knocking him down again and injuring him. Ethan however just stared at Glory and continued his incantation.
“Hissing, writhing, striking near.” A snake materialised out of the dusty workshop floor and wound itself around Glory’s leg. Ethan was panting not able to keep a strong control on his powers when he was in such pain. He was sure that the last knock had broken something within him. He didn’t really care though, he knew this was a suicide mission, he just couldn’t face a world without Ripper in it anymore. It had been hard enough when Ripper had hated his guts but now that the Watcher was dead, well, Ethan just couldn’t live with himself anymore. Glory shook her foot and the snake disappeared in a puff of smoke. As Glory walked forward Ethan could feel the barrier that had kept the minions back dissolving. He was becoming impossibly weak and he knew that the end would be on him in a second.
“Now this is getting weak.” Glory commented pulling Ethan up by his throat. “And so are you, honey. Aren't ya?” Glory was confident in her ability to smash this man like a little bitty bug but then Ethan surprised her, he spat in her face. Glory was startled and dropped the human unceremoniously back onto the ground. Ethan had one spell left on him. One spell that he hoped would drive her at least a little crazy but he didn’t know if he had the power left to pull it off- but he was gonna darn well try. He owed Ripper’s memory at least that. Ethan drew all his power into him and started chanting.
Willow strained to hear the chant that was coming out of the Englishman’s mouth. Part of her was surprised that Glory had yet to squash Ethan Rayne under her foot like a bug, but then she recognised that Glory was just toying with the mage. Playing with him the way a cat played with a mouse already within its trap. Right now Glory wasn’t squashing Ethan because she was curious as to what he would try next. Tara squeezed Willow’s hand, she recognised what was being chanted, they had memorised it themselves knowing that if they could get close enough to Glory they should use it. It was their best chance to at least slow Glory down. Tara and Willow shared a look knowing that Ethan had no hope of pulling it off by himself. Willow didn’t know that even with Tara and her power if it would be enough and it would weaken them considerably, making them vulnerable. Should they risk it?
Just then a scream ripped through the air. A terrified Dawn had spotted them. With that scream Willow remembered why they were there. To save Dawn and the world no matter the personal cost. Willow grabbed Tara’s hand and squeezed it before stepping forward secure in the knowledge that her lover was right there next to her. They would throw everything they had at the hellgod. Standing tall Willow went to meet her fate.
