Buffy couldn’t help a pang of regret as they pulled away from the hotel. The last few days had been the most blissful ones she’d had in recent memory. She and Giles loved each other and they’d discovered it here. For the rest of her life, this hotel would always hold a cherished place in her memories.
Giles could sense what was on her mind but he refrained from comment. She was beginning to appreciate that in him. Angel had been the tall, strong, quiet type, too. But his silence was more of the denseness of John Wayne’s outdated tough guy image and it had driven her nuts more times than she could count. She could never be sure what he was thinking.
But Giles’ silence was comfortable like his tweed, his habit of drinking tea in the afternoons and his cologne. He was thinking what she was thinking. And if he wasn’t then he got what she was thinking. There was none of the angst and missed signals there’d been with her other boyfriends.
They unpacked the bags from the trunk and walked up the driveway to the house on Revello Drive. They’d barely begun moving up the walkway when Dawn flung open the door and ran down the drive.
“Buffy! Giles! You’re home! How was the museum? Did you bring me any presents?” She beamed at them both while Buffy stared at her suspiciously.
“You’re way too cheerful to have me back. And what’s with running to meet us?”
Dawn grinned nervously. “What? I can’t be happy to see my big sister?”
“Since when?” Buffy tried to push past her and Dawn darted in front of her and snatched at one of her bags.
“Let me carry that. Boy, is this heavy. Did you take every pair of shoes you owned?”
“Dawn.” Buffy wasn’t convinced by this show of solicitude. It was so very unlike her little sister. She marched up to the door and threw it open.
A distinct pungent odor of burned rice hung in the air and, as she stepped into the kitchen, she gaped in shock at the blobs of yellow-orange gunk that coated the walls. Dawn fidgeted and said in response to her accusing stare, “Xander was helping me clean it up. We were gonna have it all tidied up by the time you came back.”
“Oh my god.” Buffy dropped her bag with a thump. “What was it? A demon? An apocalypse? What, did they chose my one vacation in six years to attack?”
Xander came into the kitchen, bits of sauce in his hair. He was dressed in an apron and holding a bucket of soapy water in one hand. “Actually, this was more of a pressure cooker Chicken Kiev surprise that went kablooey. Surprise!” he said and feebly waved his hand in the air.
Buffy walked back to the stairs, sank onto the bottom step and buried her head in her hands. Shit, why couldn’t she have stayed in Heaven? Her friends yanked her back on earth for this?
Giles stepped into the house and bent a stern glare on Dawn. “I take it this was a cooking venture that went awry?” When she nodded guiltily, he sighed. “Very well. Since I think it is quite unfair for your sister to have to deal with this disaster, I’ll leave you and Xander to your clean-up duties. Good day, Buffy.”
Buffy’s head shot up and she rushed over to him. “You’re not leaving now, are you? I mean, we just got back and I don’t want you to go yet.” Her voice got low on the final words and there was a pleading look in her hazel eyes.
“I can hardly stay, given the disarray the house is in.” He grimaced as a bit of chicken slid with a plop from the walls.
“Well, maybe I can stay with you. Just until the house smells less of burning bird meat.”
He hesitated, aware of Dawn’s avid gaze on both of them. “I hardly think that’s appropriate.”
Buffy became mindful of her little sister as well. “Well, I don’t want you to leave until I’ve given you your present.”
His eyebrows shot up as she began digging through her purse. “Present? Buffy, you didn’t need to do that.”
“Oh yes, I did. I don’t want you to forget what this weekend meant to me.” Pulling the small package from her purse, she pressed it into his hand.
He turned the note cards over in his hand and smiled at the familiar picture. “When did you get these?”
“It was at the museum when I went to the bathroom. I took a quick detour to the gift shop and I got these. They reminded me of you.”
He looked at the picture. It was a representation of Gustav Klimt’s most famous work. He traced the figures with one long finger and smiled. “It’s lovely. But I don’t quite see how I came to mind when you saw this.”
“Well, he’s older than she is. See? There’s gray in his hair and his fingers are sorta gnarly.”
He frowned in disappointment. “And you see me as being too old.”
“I didn’t say you--he was too old for her. I’m just pointing out that he’s older. But he loves her and she loves him. You can tell by looking at them. Their ages don’t matter.”
Giles did indeed see the details she pointed out. Her fingers caressed the rich golden pattern of the man and woman’s matching cloaks as she whispered, “Their ages may be different. But in every other way they fit. That’s what I saw when I bought these.”
“Buffy.” His voice deepened in love and gratitude and he clasped her hand. Forgetting her watchful sister, Giles drew her close and kissed her.
“Oh my god! Buffy, are you and Giles boinking?!” Dawn squealed.
Buffy drew back to glare at her sister. “No, we’re kissing. Don’t they teach you anything in Phys Ed class, Dawn?”
“You know what I’m talking about. Is that why you guys went away this weekend?”
Xander had come running out from the kitchen at Dawn’s shriek and stared in confusion at them. “What’s going on? What did Buffy and Giles do?”
“I think they got groiny with each other at the hotel. This is so cool!”
Buffy’s eyebrows shot up as she stared at Dawn. “Cool? Don’t you mean gross? Shouldn’t you be making gagging noises or something?”
“No way! This is Giles. I think it’s great you two are together.” She paused as she searched their thoughtful faces. “You are together, aren’t you? You didn’t just get frisky at the hotel and then decide to be good friends or anything?”
Xander’s mouth worked and his dark brown eyes grew wide as saucers. “Buffy and Giles got frisky? No, that is a non-thought. That is not a thought I want to have running around in my head while cleaning up chicken parts!”
Dawn rolled her eyes. “Xander, grow up.” Then she glanced from her sister to the tall Englishman beside her. “So, are you two together?”
Buffy grimaced and turned back to her lover. “I’m beginning to wish we’d booked another week at the hotel. All this sister buttinsky business is too much to deal with on my first day back.”
“We can always go there for our honeymoon.” The casual words escaped him before he could think and he was met with stunned stares from the two females and strangling sounds from Xander.
“H-honeymoon? As in honeymoon?” Buffy squeaked. Darn, she sounded just like Dawn when she did that. She cleared her throat and tried speaking again, striving for a more normal tone. “Giles, we can’t have a honeymoon. You kinda have to be married to do that.”
“Now, you see, I’m having trouble with this conversation. We’re talking about honeymoons and marriage and Buffy and Giles all in the same sentence. I’m definitely missing something because WHEN DID ALL THIS HAPPEN?” Xander cried.
Giles ignored the sputtering boy and knelt down on one knee at Buffy’s feet. He clasped her hand and murmured, “These aren’t the circumstances I would have chosen to do this. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from living on the Hellmouth, there are no ‘ideal’ circumstances. So I’m asking you right now. Ms. Elizabeth Anne Summers…will you marry me?”
Elizabeth Anne? Well, of course Giles would know her whole name. She doubted Angel ever had. He was holding her hand and waiting for an answer. She looked into those anxious green eyes and realized there was only one thing she could say.
“Yes. Yes. Rupert Giles, I will marry you.” He smiled in relief and she realized that he hadn’t been sure of her in spite of all she said. When he stood again with difficulty, she raised herself on tiptoe and kissed him, ignoring her sister and deeply disturbed friend in the background.
When their lips parted, Xander had regained some semblance of control. “I’m still thinking this is all waaayy too sudden. But if this isn’t just some weekend fling then I wish the two of you all the best.”
Giles smiled at the young man, silently congratulating him on his gracious recovery. “Thank you, Xander. I’d very much like it if you were my best man. That is, if you want.”
Xander grinned at him. “Well, let me check my schedule.” He pretended to think it over. “Nope, don’t have anything really big planned. Uh, when are you going to do this?”
“I was thinking June. That’s the traditional month and I’ve noticed the Hellmouth gets rather quiet around that time.”
Dawn raised her hand. “Giles, could you do me a favor and not have me wearing some ugly bridesmaid costume with puffy sleeves? I think the bride does that to make herself look better by comparison. I know Buffy needs the help but she’ll just have to deal with the competition,” she finished smugly.
Buffy glared at her. “No fancy dress would help with you, Dawn. Besides, at least this way I know you wouldn’t be stealing one of my clothes again.”
Her young sister stuck her tongue out at her and then threw her arms around Giles. “Congratulations, Giles. Or maybe I should say good luck since you’re marrying Crazy Depresso Girl here.”
“Just make sure there’s plenty of wedding cake,” Xander added.
Buffy wrinkled her nose at Xander. “You should have plenty of wedding cake at your own wedding. Speaking of food...” She grimaced as another piece of chicken hit the floor. “Don’t you and Dawn have some scrubbing to do?”
Xander pulled a protesting Dawn back into the kitchen as Buffy and Giles sat together on the stairs. “So, it’s official then? We’re actually going to get married?” Buffy whispered.
“Yes. Yes, we are. It seems I’m going to be getting those things we talked about, after all.” At her inquiring look, he recalled one of their many conversations. “You remember--wife, child, all that grownup nonsense.”
“Right. Look at me, Buffy the Grownup.” She sat beside him and sighed happily. Then she sat up again. “I still have to unpack, Giles. Do you want to leave your stuff here or take it back with you to your house?”
“I think I should go back to my place.” At her obvious disappointment, he darted a swift kiss to her cheek. “I’d very much like to stay but there’s no space for me and my things and you would have to shift around furniture and clothing to make room. Let’s not do that right now.”
“Okay. You’re the boss, Watcherman.” She ran one little finger around the front of his shirt. She was reluctant to let him go and sensed that he was equally balking at leaving. She snuck a peek around the corner to make sure her sister wasn’t listening. “How about one more for the road?” she murmured with a wink.
“One more…?” Aha! His grin was Ripperish in its answer and he grasped her hand. Gathering up Buffy in his arms, he carried her laughing body all the way up the stairs.
Dawn came tiptoeing out and glanced at all the luggage that still lay scattered in the hallway. “Buffy? Did you forget to take your stuff upstairs?” She strained her ears and gaped as she heard indistinct murmurs and sounds coming from the upstairs room. Xander came strolling out moments later and blanched at the noises.
“Okay, Dawn. I think we’re finished with the kitchen now. Want to come over to my house for some popcorn and video rentals?”
“What? Oh, right. I had enough of the bed grunting and groaning when Riley was staying over. I need my beauty sleep.” She stripped off the pink gloves she was wearing and blithely tossed them in the trash. “So do you think things’ll be different having Giles as my brother-in-law instead of my father figure? Ooh! I wonder what Buffy’ll tell my real dad. Do you think they’ll invite him to the wedding?”
Xander picked his way over the scattered luggage and sighed heavily. “I’m still trying to wrap my mind around ‘Buffy and Giles sitting in a tree’ imagery, Dawn. Let’s deal with the here and now before sending out the invitations. What do you want to watch for the video?”
“Something romantic. How about Simply Irresistible?”
A loud moan came from upstairs and Xander hurriedly stripped off his apron. “Sure. Yeah. Whatever.”
“So what do you think I should bring to the wedding as a gift? Maybe it should be a sensible gift--like crotchless panties.” Dawn mused mischievously.
“That’s for the bachelorette party, I think.” There was a louder moan from upstairs and Xander pushed the younger Summers girl out the front door.
