Title: Fighting For Survival
Author: AddictedtoBuffy
Rating: NC17
Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Chapter Five
Angel hugged his boys close, aware of Xander’s tears wetting his collar as Spike writhed in pain. Finally Spike stopped moving and fell unconscious. Both Angel and Xander relaxed knowing that he wouldn’t be feeling any more pain at least. Smelling Xander’s blood, Angel stood up and hoisted his unconscious childe over his shoulder before offering Xander a hand up. Angel couldn’t carry them both but he could at least support Xander’s weight. They slowly made their way over to the stairs and Xander realised that he hadn’t said anything to Angel since they had arrived.
“Angel!” he choked out and then realised he didn’t know what to say. As they ascended the stairs Angel hugged Xander to him trying to convey reassurance through his touch. Hopefully the three of them would be able to get through this together.
“It’s okay, baby boy. You’re here now.” They reached the top of the stairs and as Angel reached for the doorknob Xander tried to move away from the comforting support of his lover. “What are you doing?” Angel asked wanting to feel Xander next to him, reassure his demon that Xander was fine, was going to continue to be fine.
“They…They don’t know about us and not that I’m ashamed about you or anything but I don’t want to upset them. They have been through so much today; I don’t want to add more on top of that.” Angel stared at Xander for a moment before replying.
“Tough. We’ve been through so much today and I need the reassurance of you near me and you need that too. Besides, I told my crew earlier today so the others would find out anyway.” Angel’s tone held no room for argument and secretly, Xander was relieved. He didn’t know how he would have been able to keep up the façade when all he wanted to do was hold onto both his lovers for dear life. They walked into the foyer and Angel immediately searched the chaos for the doctor knowing that Xander needed medical attention and hoping that the arrow hadn’t done any permanent damage. Dr Philips, however, was the one who found them; having already been told that he had two more patients on his way.
“Which one would you like me to look over first?” The doctor asked warily taking in the momma bear vibes radiating out from Angel.
“Take care of Xander’s arm first, I can take care of Spike but I might need you to look over him later to make sure there’s no lasting brain-damage.” Angel stated, all business again, and ushered Xander over to the nearest couch. “Cordelia!” He called out sitting down and arranging the unconscious Spike so that his head was in Angel’s lap.
“What do you need?” Cordelia asked from where she had been trying to comfort Anya, who seemed particularly torn up at the news of Giles death. ‘Was there something going on there?’ she thought and then shuddered, not really wanting to know the details of Giles personal life when he had been like a father to her.
“I need a couple of mugs full of blood, please, don’t bother heating them.” Angel hated drinking blood in front of people but this time he didn’t have a choice, he needed to help Spike with Sire’s blood and he would need to replace said blood straight away. Meanwhile, Dr Philips broke the arrow off and then pulled the other end through Xander’s arm.
“OW!” Xander cried, grabbing onto Angel with his good arm. “How ‘bout I never do that again.” He stated to the room at large trying to ignore his fear about Spike who had not moved since he fell into unconsciousness in the garage.
“He’ll be okay. You’ll see.” Angel whispered so that only Xander could hear him while he brought his wrist to his mouth and bit into it until he drew blood. Angel then placed the bloody appendage at Spike’s mouth and tilted his head back so that they blood would pool near the back of Spike’s mouth. Stroking Spike’s throat to trigger the swallowing mechanism, Angel watched as Doctor Philips examined Xander’s arm before pulling out his medical kit.
“What’s the damage doc?” Xander asked feeling a little more relaxed now that he had taken some strong pain-killers.
“You’re lucky it missed all the major arteries and muscles. I’ll stich up both tears and bandage it up. I’ll give you some antibiotics and painkillers and as long as you don’t get it wet or do anything too strenuous it should be okay.” Xander nodded and absently started patting Spike’s arm while thinking. “Lucky I don’t start work for over a week.” he mentioned to the world at large as he watched Spike’s eyes flutter open and Angel remove his arm from Spike’s mouth. All in all Xander was feeling very mellow and comfortable knowing that they were all alright, at least for the time being, but that was enough. ‘Must be the meds,’ Xander decided but didn’t want to do anything to spoil the restful feeling that had come over him. Unfortunately all good things come to an end.
“Xander. What do you mean you start work in over a week? You have a job. Isn’t that construction gig starting to pick up in Sunnydale?” Willow asked from where she was sitting on the floor wrapped around Tara. Just then Spike opened his eyes fully and trying to ignore the colossal headache, looked up into the face of Angel.
“Peaches.” He murmured not realising that other people were around. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again.” He admitted softly before pulling Angel into a kiss that was anything but platonic. Xander stared at them loving how they looked together; hopefully they would be able to sneak upstairs soon. Xander wasn’t the only one watching the two vampires, as a matter of fact everyone in the foyer found themselves unable to look away. Joyce was grateful that Dawn was in the toilet but she did have a sad smile on her face. Having bonded with Spike over hot chocolate and marshmallows, Joyce knew all about Spike’s relationship with Angelus and had also been privy to Spike’s plan to bring his current lover and his old lover together. From the looks of things it had worked perfectly.
Willow sat there with her mouth open, totally astonished at Spike’s audacity when his lover was sitting right next to them. Poor Xander she thought but she did not see the expression of lust on Xander’s face. Tara however did and quickly had a look at their aura’s. What she saw made her gasp and then smile. Xander was definitely a lucky man. The two vampires finally broke apart and Willow saw her chance to yell at them.
“ANGEL! OH!” She exclaimed when Angel pulled Xander into an equally passionate kiss. Anya watched the three on the couch and thought they were particularly hot but she didn’t think they’d let her watch them when Xander had refused to let her watch him and Spike together. Pity, it would have been the perfect way to forget about Rupert for a while. Gunn smiled at the three lovers and then sneaked a glance at Wesley who was red in the face but didn’t seem able to tear his gaze away. Cordy was stamping her foot and though she wouldn’t admit it thought the whole thing was cute. However, they had too much to do right then.
“Alright you three break it up. Unless you’ve forgotten, we’ve still got things to do.” Angel and Xander quickly whipped around and Spike put on his best who me? expression while slowly moving his hand off Xander’s ass.
“Xander? What’s going on? Why didn’t you tell me?” Willow asked completely confused and wondering if what she suspected was true.
“I was going to tell you all earlier today actually, but then things started to happen and there were more important things to do, like staying alive,” he replied.
“And what exactly were you going to tell me?” Willow asked wanting to hear it clearly from Xander before anything else.
“We were going to tell you Red, that we’re moving here. Xander’s got a construction job all lined up and we’re with Angel. It’s the three of us now. Do you have a problem with that?” Spike answered Willow before asking his own question hoping that she wouldn’t make a big fuss about this.
“Okay, no I don’t have an issue with it as long as you’re both happy.” Willow answered not wanting to alienate Xander further. He hadn’t been around much lately, always going of on trips and holidays and Willow now thought she knew why and where.
“Now that’s all settled, is there any chance that you were followed? I for one don’t want knights or psycho bitches coming through the door, thank you very much.” Cordelia got them back on track in her usual blunt way knowing that they still needed to focus; it wasn’t over yet.
“No we weren’t followed. Willow stopped Glory for long enough and most of the knights were part of the human barricade and besides they didn’t seem to be up-on new technology like cars.”
“Well that’s at least one thing to be grateful for I suppose.” Wesley commented rolling out a whiteboard with Gunn pushing the other end until it was where everyone could see it. “Now I need to know everything you can tell me, let’s start with this Glory. Where was she first seen?” Wesley asked. Spike frowned at this and then remembered the book in his jacket and the words Giles had spoken to him telling him it explained a lot about what was going on.
“Actually Watcher, before we do this I need to talk to you, Peaches and the Whelp in Angels’ office for a moment.” Angel stared at Spike quizzically wondering what Spike was doing.
“I think this is a bit more important Spike.” Wesley stated. He didn’t really like the vampire on principal; Spike didn’t have a soul. There was also the little matter of his family history that involved the vampire.
“I don’t think so Watcher.” Spike replied glaring at the poncy Englishman. He would rather not say why he needed to speak to them in private, not that he didn’t trust the others, but because the information he carried must be dangerous for the Slayer and her Watcher to keep it from the Scoobies. Angel caught the seriousness of Spike’s tone and decided that it would probably be a good idea to do as instructed for the time being.
“C’mon Wesley the sooner he spills, the sooner you’ll be back out here with your board,” Xander smirked, standing as well.
“If it’s okay with you, I’m just going to assist Mrs Summers upstairs, but I need to talk to you later.” Dr Phillips commented helping a weary and pale looking Joyce up. Angel just nodded. Great, another thing to worry about, he thought. Xander grabbed his arm and pulled the reluctant vampire into the office area.
“Okay Spike. What is so important that you pulled us out of important information sharing time?” Wesley asked annoyed and not really wanting to be alone in a room with the three lovers.
“This.” Spike answered pulling the red and black journal out from his jacket. “Rupert gave me this before…He made it very clear that it held information that was important for the good guys to have and that Glory shouldn’t get her hands on it whatever it took. I think the Watcher and Slayer knew something about this Glory, something that they weren’t sharing.”
“What makes you say that?” Xander asked his lover. He didn’t want to think they had been keeping secrets but he also trusted Spike.
“You know when the snake demon left the Magic Box, love?”
“Yeah”
“As Giles helped her up, Buffy said ‘It Knows’ before taking off after it.”
“Knows what?” Wesley asked while Angel drew Xander to him. Even though he didn’t love Buffy anymore, he once did and it hurt to think of her going out like that. Why hadn’t the powers intervened?
“That’s what we find out when we open the damn book, Watcher.” Spike retorted. ‘What is with Watchers and expecting everybody to know the answers’ he groused. Deciding that the Watcher was useless and his lovers were too busy giving comfort to each other, Spike opened the book.
“Well, what does it say?” Xander asked almost straight away never having had the patience to wait.
“Where did he learn to write so bloody small, from a fruit fly?” Spike mumbled to himself.
“Oh. Give it here.” Angel grabbed the book off his childe knowing the reason why Spike couldn’t read the writing. He wasn’t wearing glasses, which he needed, but Spike always insisted that they would get in the way of his image. “Okay what have we got? Tarnis, 12th century. One of the founders of the monks of the order of Dagon. Their sole purpose appears to have been as protectors of the key."
“Brown-robe types are always protecting something. It's the only way they can justify giving up girls.” Spike scoffed.
“I thought Giles couldn’t find anything about this Glory and what exactly do these monks have to do with her. For that matter what’s that about a key?” asked a clearly confused Xander. He may have learnt much about the demon world from his lovers and all the hours of research he had put in, but this stuff just seemed so complicated.
“The key is not directly described in any known literature, but all research indicates an energy matrix vibrating at a dimensional frequency beyond normal human perception. Only those outside reality can see the key's true nature.” Wesley read out of a book he had just pulled off Angel’s shelf.
“That’s exactly what is written here,” Angel stated skim reading that paragraph.
“Well yes, Mr Giles did possess this book, this is almost certainly his source but what this has to do with Glory, your guess is as good as mine.”
“Outside reality. What's that mean?” Xander pondered out loud.
“Mm. Second-sight blokes, mostly. Or even just your run-of-the-mill lunatics.” Spike answered, searching his pockets for a smoke. Once found he lit up with his trusty Zippo ignoring Angel’s glare. “What else does it say about this key? Is it made out of gold? Maybe we can hock it, use the money to set up Joyce and the bit.”
“Spike” Angel growled as he grabbed Spike’s cigarette and put it out.
“Wot? It’s an idea.” Spike retorted. The next thing Xander knew Spike’s tongue was down his throat and he was sucking on it wanting more. Angel watched them for a second wanting to join them before remembering their dire situation. After he had smacked Spike’s head Angel continued to read.
"The key is also susceptible to necromanced animal detection, particularly those of canine or serpent construct." At those words Spike and Xander stared at each other remembering the snake in the middle of the Magic Box flashing red eyes at Dawn.
“Holy Toleto Batman. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Xander asked Spike.
“I hope not pet, cos if you are, life is about to become so much more complicated.” As Angel didn’t have a clue what they were talking about he kept on reading.
"The monks possessed the ability to transform energy, bend reality. They had to be certain the Slayer would protect it with her life. So they sent the key to her ... in human form. In the form of a sister. Oh shit” Angel exclaimed, all the pieces fitting together, they died protecting her, protecting a secret that even the girl in question didn’t know about.
“Dawn,” was the only thing Wesley needed to say.
“Dawn,” Angel agreed.
