MIDNIGHT AND ROSES - CHAPTER 5

Spike paced nervously back and forth in front of his crypt like a chained dog. He looked up at the full moon and grunted, then took a final drag on the cigarette he held between two fingers before tossing it to the ground to join the steadily growing pyramid of dead smokes. He lit up another, not even realizing the one he had just thrown away was only half gone. Patience was not one of the small vampire’s stronger virtues. He ran a hand lightly through his platinum curls in frustration and flicked another half-smoked cigarette away before he retreated into the dark confines of his home.
Angel had tears in his eyes as he placed a tender kiss on Buffy’s forehead. He hated to hurt her feelings but it had to be done. The vampire slayer had never loved him and he knew it. Deep down inside, he knew she knew it, too, and it was pointless for him to keep on hoping for more. He needed a commitment from Buffy that she wasn’t willing to give, and it had finally forced him away. Now, Angel was involved with someone who really made him feel wanted, made him feel like a man, and he wanted to deepen the relationship.
“I’m in love with Spike, Buffy... and he’s in love with me. I’m sorry...”
Buffy stood stunned and speechless in front of the handsome demon hunter, unbelieving of the words he had just spoken to her. While she and Angel had not seen each other on a personal level for several weeks, it didn’t occur to her that he might be seeing someone else.
“No... no. I’m not hearing this,” Buffy said incredulously as her mind reeled. “You... and Spike... are... what? Fucking... each other? Is that what you’re telling me? You’re fuck buddies?”
Angel lowered his eyes before he spoke. “It’s not like that, Buffy... at least... not yet.”
“Not yet! What the hell is that supposed to mean, Angel? How ... how long has this... *thing* ... you have with Spike been going on?” she spat out in disgust.
“It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that I want to be with him. I love him; something I can’t get from you, and believe me, I’ve tried. You don’t love me, Buffy. Spike does. I’m really sorry...” Angel said softly as he turned to leave.
“That bastard! What has he done to you? Bit you? I’ll kill him!” Buffy spewed out as hot tears fell down her cheeks. She rushed at Angel as he headed toward the door, grabbed his arm and spun him around to face her.
“Please, Angel... not Spike...” she wailed as she weakly beat her fists against Angel’s broad chest.
The demon hunter caught the tiny slayer by the wrists and gently pushed her away.
“It’s too late, Buffy. I have to go,” he said quietly, then turned on his heels and walked out the door.

Angel shoved his hands into his pockets and hung his head as he walked toward the cemetery. It was not in his nature to be unnecessarily cruel and he felt like shit wondering if he could have let Buffy down more gently. If he could have done something to ease her pain, he would have, but there were no easy answers. It was done. He sighed in resignation then quickened his pace as he walked. Spike was waiting for him.
Spike fidgeted in the old horsehair chair that he had arranged in front of a small black and white television set. An old Humphrey Bogart film was on, one of his favorites, but he couldn’t sit still long enough to enjoy it. Angel was on his mind and he wouldn’t be at ease until his lover was safe in his arms. The blond vampire’s mind raced as he imagined all sorts of things that could go wrong when Angel finally told Buffy he was breaking up with her... for him.
A slight smile managed to find it’s way to the corner of Spike’s mouth as he savored the image of the slayer going starkers at the news, but he soon returned to worrying about Angel. He had offered to go with him to Buffy’s for support, but his offer was refused. He pulled out his pack of cigarettes and looked at it in disgust when he saw that it was empty. He wadded the package up into a small ball and threw it down on the floor before he got up to search for more. Finding none, Spike started to rummage through the used butts scattered around the room. When he found one to his satisfaction, he grunted at it and decided to light up outside.
As he walked toward the door, Spike sighed in relief at a familiar scent. Before Angel had a chance to touch the handle, the door to the crypt was flung open from the inside and Spike literally came flying out to wrap his arms around the big man’s waist.
“Angel, luv...” was all Spike could get out of his mouth before Angel smothered it with a deep, hungry kiss.
Without breaking their kiss, Angel easily lifted the small vampire into his arms and took him into the crypt. Angel sighed and lowered Spike to his feet. “Can we not talk about that right now?”
“Sure, luv. Anything you want.”
Angel’s eyes bore into Spike’s. “Do you know what I want, Spike? I want you to pack your stuff. You’re moving in with me... tonight.”
Spike was taken aback a little. No one had ever cared about him enough to invite him to move in with them, but here was Angel, staring at him with love in his eyes, asking him to do just that.
“Spike? Did you hear what I said?” Angel asked softly when Spike didn’t reply. “If you don’t want to, you don’t have to. I know we haven’t been that intimate yet, to ask you to move in with me, but I just thought you shouldn’t stay here. You know... if Buffy comes looking for you. This will be the first place she’ll look...”
Spike stared back at Angel with his mouth open. Did he misread the invitation? Was Angel asking him to move in with him out of pity, or worse yet, fear and not love? Granted, their relationship so far had only consisted of a few blow jobs, some mutual masturbation and rubbing off, but Spike swore he would not push Angel into anything he was not comfortable with. I love you... I want you to claim me... make me yours...” Angel said softly as tears welled up in his eyes and spilled slowly down his cheeks.
Spike trembled as he gently eased himself out of Angel’s embrace. How he had waited, wanted desperately to hear those words from the man standing in front of him. He had hoped beyond hope, from the time he had first laid eyes on the demon hunter, that this day would come, and despite their rocky beginning, their love did bloom.

Angel smiled shyly and reached out for Spike’s hand. He raised it to his lips and gently kissed the pale flesh. “I know what I’m doing, Spike. I want this... I want you,” he said softly, then scooped the blond vampire up into his arms and headed for Spike’s bedroom.
