Chapter Six
Upon, William’s departure from the sitting room, Fred decided that she should take her leave in order to allow the Giles men time to get to know the complex new addition to their small family. She gave Rupert a kiss on the cheek,, promising him that she would stop by the following day to check on William. Being that she had driven in her vehicle that day while out with Wesley, she did not need a ride home. Wesley walked his girlfriend to her car, where they shared a brief private moment before he returned to the house to speak with his father about William. The older Giles sat in deep thought. His eyes were closed and his head lay resting on the back cushions of his chair. If Wesley did not know better, he would have thought that Rupert was asleep. Knowing his father better than anyone else, Wesley knew that he was only thinking. Therefore he was not startled when Rupert chose to address him.
“Wesley,” he began. “What do you think of William so far?” If the previous encounter was any indication of his son’s feelings toward the boy, then Rupert would bet money that Wesley did not like the young man very much at all. However he wanted to be sure before jumping to any conclusion. Knowing that there was more to his father’s question than what seemed, Wesley chose took a moment to think before answering frankly.
“Actually Father, the boys presence in our home disturbs me” When Rupert did no more than sit up to face him, Wesley went on with his assessment of his cousin. “When you think about it,” he continued. “We really have no proof that he is an actual relative. Neither one of us has seen the boy since he was a lad.” Rupert nodded, but did not interrupt. His outer appearance offered no clue as to what he was thinking. Undeterresleesley went on speaking. “Honestly father, did you notice how close he and the other man seemed to be toward one another.” Wesley frowned in disgust. “It seemed as though they were,” he shuddered before speaking. He began again. “It seemed as if they were intimate with one another.” This statement got a slight reaction from Rupert Giles. His father crossed his arms and sat up straight giving Wesley his utmost attention. Again he nodded but this time he chose to speak.
“So does the thought of William having relations with another man disturb you?” Rupert was curious as to what his son’s answer would be. Wesley thought this question over. If he was honest with himself, he could admit that his first reaction to William’s bodily appearance had been a physical one. He could hardly deny that the boy was attractive. However he was a no more than a street urchin. He’d basically been homeless until he had shown up unannounced and uninvited on their doorstep. From what he sensed of his cousin’s experience on the street, the boy was damaged goods. Wesley knew that his father might not like what he was about to say but he could not hold back his words. “I think that William is a time bomb waiting to explode. Did you see how he just broke down when that Liam character left?” Wesley snorted. “Now there’s a criminal if I ever saw one.” Just how may criminals are you acquainted with? Rupert thought sarcastically. Wesley had grown to be a fine young man, yet he was far too judgmental for his own good. Rupert temporarily disregarded these thoughts in order to tune back into what his son was saying. “Furthermore, I question William’s prior activities.” Wesley spared a glance toward the top of the staircase before lowering his voice and continuing. “You don’t think he’s involved in drugs do you?” Actually, Wesley had posed a good point. Rupert did not believe that William was involved with the selling of narcotics. He did however, wonder if the boy dallied in drugs recreationally. He intended to make finding out the answer to that question a priority.
“Yes, well, you have raised some very good points, son. However I remember the child that William was at six quite well. Although much can be said for William’s current outward appearance, his eyes are the same ice blue as my sister Rebecca’s. Actually, I can see a lot of Becca in the boy.” Rupert thought of his sister, and how she had left his twelve year old nephew to survive on his own. Why didn’t you send him to me? He frowned in dismay before shaking off his sorrow. There was no use dwelling on a past that he couldn’t change. What he could do was try to make things better for William now that the boy was with him. Upon coming to this decision, Rupert cleared his throat.
“I promised William that you would be up with his things soon.” Rupert stated. “Bring his bags to his rooms immediately please. While you are there, try to inquire as to how he is faring thus far. I’m going to start dinner.” Rupert left in the direction of the kitchen. Wesley spotted the two large leather duffle bags by the door and groaned inwardly. Oh great! Now I’m supposed to play lackey to the prat. He snatched up the two large bags, which were not terribly heavy, and made his way upstairs to the guest room. No my mistake. Thought Wesley in a huff once he stood outside the closed door. We no longer have a guest room. It’s William’s room now. Wesley knocked on the door none to gently. When he received no answer, he decided to turn the knob. Finding the door unlocked, he opened it and made his way inside. William lay curled up in the center of the bed. Wesley stepped closer to his cousin’s slumbering form. He looks so innocent right now. Wesley thought to himself. He noticed the dried trails on William’s cheeks which had been formed as the boy had cried himself to sleep. Like Rupert, Wesley was beginning to feel that there was more to this young man than met the eye. He decided that although he could not currently bring himself to trust William, perhaps the teen wasn’t all that bad. Maybe just, maybe William stood a chance of being rehabilitated. Wesley placed William’s belongings at the foot of the bed, and quietly left his cousin’s room, closing the door with a soft click behind him. He went downstairs to assist his father with the preparation of their evening meal.
Uncomfortable with his new surroundings, William had awoken the moment that Wesley had stepped into his room. He lay feigning sleep all the while that the other man had stood silently looking him over. Oh great. He’s a bloody perv. I’ll have to watch meself around this one. He had released a genuine sigh of relief once Wesley had exited his quarters. William waited a few seconds before moving about. He didn’t want Wesley to know that he was up. Once he was sure that the man had moved on, William scrambled to the foot of his bed to check for his bags. Seeing the two large satchels, he quickly slipped out of bed and sat down beside them. William ran his hand lovingly across the smooth surface of one bag. Oh Liam. Why did I let you talk me into coming here? A low chiming coming from his bag caused him to pull back his hand in shock.
“What in the hell?” The chiming continued. William unzipped the bag and dug around the piles of clothing until he came to the source of the noise. He held in his hand a palm sized cell phone. He flipped it open and spoke into it hesitantly. “Hello?” A familiar voice answered him.
“So are you holding up alright?” William could fteartears welling up in his eyes. He closed his eyes and smiled.
“Liam? Is it really you?” The male voice on the other end laughed dryly.
“Well who else would it be?” Liam smiled warmly listening to his friend sniff back tears over the phone. “Will, are you there?”
“Yeah Li. I’m here. I can’t believe that you gave me a bloody cellP>

“Did you honestly think I was going to leave you with a couple of strangers without some way of keeping in contact with me? I told you, anytime day or night.” William laughed.
“I remember.”
“There should cha charger in there somewhere too. I just wanted to let you know that I’m always a phone call away. That hasn’t changed.” Liam could feel his own eyes begin to fill with tears.
“I’ve got to get going now though. I’m at work and I don’t want The Master getting on my case. Gunn says hi by the way.”
“The Master my arse,” William chuckled. “Darlamoremore like it, mate.” Liam laughed as well. “Tell Gunn that I said hello.”
“I will kid. I’ll call you tomorrow same time.”
“Alright. Tomorrow then?” William refused to say goodbye. Feeling reluctant to say bye as well, Liam replied in kind.
“Tomorrow.” Speaking quickly in order to catch Liam before he hung up William called out to his friend.
“Liam!”
“Yeah Will? What is it?” William clutched his new cell phone a tightighter.
“Thanks.”
“Anytime kid.” He folded his cell ending the call.
Alright, I know that was pretty lame. I hope that it wasn’t too sappy. Let me know what you think.
