Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Bubbysbub fought sickness to send this back so she deserves much praise.

Chapter Forty-Eight
Willow began to explain how they came to the conclusion that the best way would be if Dawn was to die.
“The key was ... living energy. It needed to be channelled, poured into a specific place at a specific time. The energy ... would flow into that spot, the walls between the dimensions break down. It stops, the energy's used up, the walls come back up. Glory uses that time to get back into her own dimension, not caring that all manner of hell will be unleashed on earth in the meantime.” When Willow looked up she was met with grim faces; nobody in the magic box would let that happen as long as they had life left in their bodies and they all knew that it would probably take their lives to stop this from happening.
“Um, but only for a little while, right? The walls come back up, uh, n… no more hell?” Xander asked his childhood friend.
“That's only if the energy is stopped. And now the key is human...is Dawn.” Tara started reading from the book that Spike and Xander had recovered.
"The blood flows, the gates will open. The gates will close when it flows no more." “When Dawn is dead.”
“Why blood? Why Dawn's blood? I mean, why couldn't it be like a, a lymph ritual?” Xander asked.
“'Cause it's always got to be blood.” Spike said softly but it carried through the room and seemed to resonate with meaning.
“We're not actually discussing dinner right now.” Gunn snarked, uncomfortable at the reminder of what Spike was.
“Blood is life, lackbrain. Why do you think we eat it? It's what keeps you going. Makes you warm. Makes you hard. Makes you other than dead. Course it's her blood.” Spike almost whispered the last couple of words upset that he had not thought of this before. He felt a surge of despair go through him and could not bear to think of Dawn’s fate.
“Pretty simple math here. We stop Glory before she can start the ritual. We still have a couple of hours, right?” Faith asked, determined to do everything possible to save Dawn; she owed it to Buffy.
“If my calculations are right. But…” Willow began knowing they needed to hear this but Xander cut her off.
“I don't wanna hear it.” Xander got up to move away but found his way blocked by four strong arms.
“I understand that…” Angel began knowing this was a conversation they needed to have and suddenly understanding where Wesley had been coming from. Had Wesley known about Dawn’s blood, Angel pondered.
“No! No, you don't understand. We are not talking about this.” Xander yelled not able to process that they were talking about killing Dawn. He wrenched himself away from his lovers and stared down at them, furious.
“Yes, we bloody well are!” Angel yelled back standing as well, not letting Xander run away from this extremely important conversation.
“If Glory begins the ritual ... if we can't stop her...” Spike spoke softly while his two lovers stared down at each other. Spike understood Xander’s need to not hear about this but he, like Angel, knew that they had to, they had to talk about it now because later it would be too late.
“Come on. Say it. We're bloody well talking about this. Tell me to kill Buffy’s sister.” Xander yelled rounding on Spike, shaking in his fury.
“She's not…” Cordelia began to whisper but Faith was the one to cut her off. Faith had kept mostly out of this conversation though she agreed with Xander, but she now felt compelled to answer. Despite only being at the hotel with Dawn for a little while, Faith felt drawn to the younger Summers and now she knew how. She didn’t know how she knew, she just did.
“No. She's not. She's more than that. She's me. The monks made her out of me. I hold her ... and I feel closer to her than ...” Faith looked down and sighed unsure if she was explaining it properly. “It’s sounds crazy I know but there is a connection there and I feel closer to her than to…” Faith stopped unable to go on.
“We'll solve this. We will. Don't have another coma, okay?” Willow quipped understanding that Faith really meant what she said.
“If the ritual starts, then every living creature in this and every other dimension imaginable will suffer unbearable torment and death ...” Angel warned, “including Dawn,” he added looking at first Xander and then Faith.
“I know,” Xander whispered, at the same time Faith said.
“I’m sorry.” Those two little words left no one in doubt that Faith would protect Dawn to the very end.
“Okay.” Cordelia spoke loudly destroying the moment. “All in favour of stopping Glory before the ritual. Suggestions, ideas? Time's a-wastin'.” Cordelia smiled as everyone started to think. “Willow. I bet you've got some dark spell a-brewin'. Uh, make her a, a, a toad? Little hoppy toad, we can hit her with a hammer?”
“What about Ben? He can be killed, right? I mean, I know he's an innocent, but, you know, not like Dawn innocent. We could kill a ... regular guy.” Xander suggested and then thought about it, realising that he was okay with it. He had been fine with Angel locking the lawyers in with Darla and Drusilla and he was okay with Ben being killed too.
“God.” Willow breathed, realising just how much her childhood friend had changed. Xander didn’t hear her but Spike did and resolved to keep an eye on Willow to make sure she didn’t make her feelings publicly known.
“It's doubtful he'll surface again this close to the ritual. We can expect it's Glory we're dealing with.” Angel suggested.
“We don't have to kill her. Uh, we just have to stop her from doing the ritual. I mean, there's only the one time that she can do it, right?” Gunn suggested.
“Yeah. We get her on the ropes, we just gotta keep her occupied till it's too late.” Spike liked this thread of conversation much more than the previous one and it was hopefully something they could do.
“Okay. But I'm still not hearing enough ideas. She's a god. Let's think outside the box.” Cordelia encouraged.
“Why don't you go think outside the bleeding box.” Spike snarked sick of her prodding.
“Yeah, Cordy,” Gunn snarked good heartedly
“The Dagon sphere!” Willow suddenly yelled out causing everyone to look at her.
“Sorry?” Angel asked, not understanding as he had no idea what a Dagon sphere was.
“When Buffy first met Glory, she found that magical ... glowy sphere that was meant to repel Glory. I think we've got it in the basement. It might drive her away or hurt her. Ooh!” Willow explained excited that she had remembered when no one else had.
“Do you still have some explosives stockpiled Xan?” Faith asked remembering how when she was first in Sunnydale Xander had shown her what he had reconditioned from the military after he had been possessed by a soldier one Halloween.
“That’s all gone.” Xander replied, before adding. “Though I did manage to scab a few grenades off Riley while he was still part of the initiative.” Spike laughed and hugged Xander close to him.
“That’s my boy.”
“Did you get any dirt Angel?” Gunn asked.
“Yeah I know where Glory is holed up but she’s surrounded by crazy people so we will only be able to use those grenades in a complete emergency.” Xander snuggled into Spike’s side content to just listen to the others plan.
“So what’s the plan?” Gunn asked bringing them all back on track.
“Faith, and myself keep Glory busy while Spike and the Scoobies with Cordelia keep the minions busy and away from Dawn. Gunn I think you and the others can handle the crazy people. They will try to hurt you at Glory’s command but please remember that they are people who aren’t in control of their actions.”

Dawn watched as Glory paced shaking her head. Dawn was sick of the crazy hellgod and would do anything to get away from her.
“Oh, Ben. This is really not a good time.” Glory moaned before morphing into Ben who continued to move forward.
“Dawn. Has Glory hurt you?” Ben asked seemingly full of concern.
“Uh ... no. Not yet.” Dawn answered hesitatingly not sure how to deal with a seemingly sympathetic Ben now that she knew who he shared his life with. “But I have to get out of here.” Dawn said strongly deciding that any ally should be welcome. Ben sank down on a chair looking terrible and starting to shake. “Ben? You okay?” She asked nervously aware that Glory could come back at any moment. When he didn’t answer Dawn stood up and walked towards him. She knew there were guards outside the door and that she wouldn’t be able to escape without his active help.
“Where is it?” Ben asked as if from a great distance staring at his hands.
“W… where's what?” Dawn asked looking around as if waiting for a monster to appear. Living on the hellmouth meant that it was a possibility.
“All the blood. I can feel it ... still warm and ... wet. Glory. Oh, god.” Ben answered still staring at his hands. “She slaughtered hundreds of men. But I can feel them ... breaking.”
“Ben, something is happening to both you and Glory.” Dawn told him hoping that he wouldn’t go into a complete meltdown because then she definitely wouldn’t be able to escape.
“ I'm remembering her, aren't I? The things she's done ... things she's going to do.” Ben stared into space in horror remembering what Glory had done.
“I know. She told me. I think ... whatever the magic is that keeps you guys apart, it's starting to break down. Ben, Glory could come back any minute.” Dawn needed to get out of their and Ben was just wasting time.
“How could she do this?” Ben asked not hearing Dawn overwhelmed by Glory’s actions.
“I don't know. But we have to get out of here and, and find…” Dawn started wanting to focus him on immediate problems but Ben would not let himself be distracted cutting off her words with his own.
“No! I mean, I have a job. I have a life! And Glory? She never once thinks about me in all this!” Dawn stared at him thinking that right now he was just being as selfish as Glory, she was going to be killed later that evening unless she could escape and he was too busy wallowing to help her.
A knock was heard loud in the silence of the room making them both jump. They stared at it before Dawn whispered to Ben knowing he could hear her.
“Help me.” She begged completely desperate.
“How?” Ben asked obviously having inherited Glory’s smarts.
“I…” Dawn began but was cut off this time by the minion priest outside the door.
“Highness!” Ben stood up and Dawn tried to sway him to her side one last time.
“Please.”
“Is everything all right?” The minion outside the door asked concerned. Ben strode over to the door and opened it forcefully.
“You're not…” The priest protested before he was pulled into the room and head-butted by Ben who had finally stopped thinking about only himself and had decided to help Dawn. The priest staggered and fell against the wall, still struggling to get up. Ben didn’t hesitate to punch him again, knocking him out for good.
“I'll take you as far as I can, ditch you before she comes back.” Ben explained grabbing Dawn’s hand, and they ran out of the door. They were able to sneak out of the building site and were soon on the main street of Sunnydale. They knew that the minions were already looking for them and Dawn looked nervously over her shoulder expecting to see them right there. She wish Ben would let go of her wrist so that she could get away from him. She knew where there were weapons in the magic box and she could use the phone there to ring Spike’s mobile. However she wasn’t going to let Ben come with her because at any moment he could turn back into Glory so she really needed to get rid of him first.
“I think they see us.” Dawn told Ben even though she couldn’t see the minions. Ben doesn’t look back though so Dawn’s lie was safe.
“Just stay close to me. Don't look back.” He commanded before dragging her into an alley, pushing her back into a brick wall.
“Shh! Stay very still.” Ben peered around the corner cautiously, though Dawn knew that no one was there. It was the chance she needed though, as she swung a huge pile of chains onto his head. He toppled over and Dawn threw the chains down next to him, expecting not to need them before she got to the magic box.
“I'm sorry.” She told the unconscious body as she left.
“Sorry?!” She heard Glory say behind her and turned back horrified. Glory stood up holding the chain in her hands.
“That actually hurt, you prepubescent puke.” Glory bitched while Dawn stood there, shocked at how it had turned out. “Okay, first thought, just totally spontaneous, unfiltered, off the top of my head ... ow!” Glory shook the chain violently in Dawn’s face before throwing it aside. “You hit Ben in his soft human head, and I remember the pain.” She complained before pinning one of Dawn’s arms behind her back and forced her further into the alley. Dawn tried not to grunt in pain, completely terrified as Glory let her go. “You probably think I won't waste any precious blood of yours till tonight. You're right. But I know a thousand ways to hurt you that won't spill a drop.” Glory pushed Dawn back until she fell on the ground so that Glory could menace over the teenage girl, who was almost as tall as the hellgod.
“You know all those pesky feelings Ben's been having like guilt, empathy? I'm gonna take 'em and mash 'em back down where they belong, okay? Now ...” Glory bent down to stroke Dawn’s cheek. “let's have big-girl fun. Just you and...” She grabbed Dawn’s chin planning on hurting her but she suddenly found herself letting go of the girl and speaking with Ben’s voice.
“Leave her alone.” Dawn watched terrified as Glory rolled her eyes and morphed into Ben. “I said, leave her alone.” Ben demanded not backing down at all finally deciding to show some balls. The next second though Glory was back and seemingly talking to herself though Dawn knew that somehow Ben could hear every word.
“No, no. Little late in the game to start growing a backbone, Benjamin. Now be good and stay quiet. No you don't! Get over yourself, Ben! This is the way things are! I'm strong, you're weak.” Glory laughed while Dawn tried to gain the courage to move but she felt frozen to the spot. “This is reality. Stop trying to infect me with your...” She whirled again and Ben stood there. Dawn was starting to feel a little dizzy from all the changes. They brought multiple personalities to a whole new level as well as the term arguing with yourself.
“Do you ever stop talking? I don't know which is worse, waking up in a dress not knowing where I've been, or having to hear all your self-involved ranting!” Dawn was suddenly struck by the mental picture of Ben in one of Glory’s frilly numbers. Quite a strange picture.
“Animal.” Glory snarked back.
“Wrong, Glory. I'm no animal. This is humanity you're feeling. Welcome to the world.” Ben argued. Dawn had finally gotten up the courage to move and as Ben and Glory kept fighting Dawn stood up and started to edge away quietly. Unfortunately Glory knew what she was doing and turned towards her.
“No, no, no!” Dawn gasped in terrified pain as Glory grabbed her and threw her across the alley. Dawn slammed into a dumpster and fell to the ground whimpering in pain.
“Stick around, chica.” Glory commanded.
“I won't let you hurt her, Glory.” Ben growled taking control of the body again but only for a split second before Glory was back again.
“Ooh, shut your hole, you sanctimonious little meatworm. I'm going home no matter what you do.” Dawn cringed as Glory moved towards her. Glory bent down to pick up something she had seen on the ground and even though she morphed into Ben he still picked up the empty beer bottle. Ben slammed it violently against the brick wall smashing it and causing Dawn to shriek in fright. Two steps and he was at Dawn’s side holding the broken edge right next to Dawn’s cheek. Dawn cringed away in terror not willing to run and get more badly injured.
“You really think I'll just let that happen?” Ben ground out, ready to make good on his threat but not able to look Dawn in the eyes. Dawn knelt there terrified, wondering if this was how she was going to die.
