Faith stepped up the stairs leading to Giles front door. Standing in the shade of the porch, she took of her sunglasses and hung them by an arm in the pocket of her denim jacket. She ran her hands through her hair and shook it out before pulling open the storm door. Her knuckle banged on the door three times before she opened it. “Hey,” she barked, “G-man, you in here?”
Giles’ head appeared from the kitchen, “Yes, I’m here. I’ll be out in a moment.”
Faith walked over to the couch and flopped down into it. She looked at the pile of books strewn across the coffee table and sighed, ‘I can’t really think of anywhere else I’d wanna be.’ Picking up a book she read the cover, ‘Alonso’s Guide to Mystical Artifacts’. Giles sat in the armchair across from her and placed his tea on the small table next to it. “Any good?” she waved the book at him.
“Only if you’re looking to find Jesus in a grilled cheese sandwich,” he sighed. “Other than that, it’s best used as a door stop.”
“Then why do you have it?”
He sighed, “If I remember correctly a friend of mine gave it to me shortly before he passed. I think it was intended as a gag gift, but now I have an attachment of sorts.”
“Oh,” she looked up briefly, “My condolences.” A small smirk crept onto her face, “He like a boyfriend or sumthin? Ya know, to explain the attachment?”
Giles coughed up his mouthful of tea in response. He started to wipe the spray off his shirt and pants with his hanky, “No, we, ah, weren’t that close, thanks.” He smiled at the giggling slayer, “Is there a reason you’re here to abuse me today?”
Faith pushed some of the books in front of her off to the side. She put her feet up on the coffee table and leaned back into the couch, “Kakistos is s’posed to be gettin’ his rock box on Tuesday. We need to come up with some kinda plan between now and then. Today’s Sunday, so I think we’re cuttin’ it kinda short.”
“Yes, you’re right,” he sighed, “I have been trying to research on how to destroy the box, but I haven’t a clue as to how we’re going to get it.” He sipped from his teacup and looked at her. “I’m fairly confident we can destroy it when we have it. There’s just that sticky little detail.”
“About gettin’ it?”
“Yes, that would be the one.”
Faith leaned forward on the couch, “Here’s the way I see it. Red pulls up the floor plan for city hall. We figger out the best place ta stash the box, then me and B go get it.”
“I am assuming that this is a preliminary plan?” he was polishing his glasses. “You and Buffy, will work out a few more details when she arrives?” He put his glasses back on and glared at the slayer.
Faith flopped back and spread her arms along the back of the couch, “What? You think it needs somethin’ else?”
Giles sighed, “Well...”
Faith waved at him, “Just teasin’, G-man. I know we gotta figger a bunch o’ shit out. Once Red gets here, we can start.”
“I see,” he pinched the bridge of his nose, “Will Buffy be joining us at some time?”
Faith shrugged, “Not sure, she had some personal stuff to look after.”
“Is she going to see Angel?” Giles shifted in his chair, “I’m not sure it’s a good idea for her to go alone.”
“Nah,” Faith flipped her hand at him. “We went this mornin’. Took him another coupla pints and checked everythin’ out. He was a little more lucid and able to figger out we were real.” She crossed her ankles on the coffee table, “Ya know, I don’t think he likes me much. I kinda get that feelin’ ya know.”
“By any chance did you, ahh, perhaps, have close contact with Buffy this morning?” a pink tinge showed in the cheeks of the watcher.
Faith’s brows furrowed as she thought about it. “I was teasin’ her and she got upset.” Faith shrugged, “I apologized and we hugged. Then we went for breakfast. Why?”
Giles cleared his throat, “He may have been able to smell her scent on you and vice versa.” The red tinge in his cheeks deepened. “Vampires are somewhat like slayers. They have heightened senses, particularly of smell and hearing. The better to detect their prey with, but that doesn’t mean it’s not always there.”
A large smirk grew on her face, “You’re tellin’ me Fang-boy is jealous?”
“No, just that he would be able to smell your co-mingled scents.” A puzzled look showed on his face, “Is there something for him to be jealous of? And if not, why would you mention it?”
Faith coughed, “No,” she coughed again, “No, it’s just why’d he get upset if I hugged her?”
“Well,” Giles tapped his chin with his forefinger. “He has been in a hell dimension for a while, and from what I gather, he was using thoughts of her to alleviate his suffering.” He paused for a second, “It may have strengthened his attachment to her over time, even though they had parted ways beforehand.” He picked up his teacup and sipped at it. “Once he gets his bearings again, there may be a slight period of adjustment before things go back to normal.”
“Oh,” Faith nodded, “Ya think B knows about this?”
“I’m not sure,” he answered. “It will depend on how deep she looks into it. She realizes that he has feelings for her, but she may just ignore them as being a part of their shared past. He, on the other hand, will do what she asks. If he presses her and she turns him down, he will love her from a distance.”
“So, if she takes up with someone else, will he interfere?”
Giles could see the earnest look in her eyes, “If the person isn’t a threat to her safety, then I don’t think he should. Why?”
Faith shook her head, “No reason, just, uh, curious.” She shrugged, and looked around the living room, “Yeah, just want to know a bit more about my roomie is all. I ain’t really clear on all the crap that went on between ‘em.”
Giles’ left eyebrow arched up, “Really?” He looked at the slayer, a small smirk breaking out on his face, a glint appearing in his eyes. “There is another possibility as to why he is not enamored with you.”
Faith tilted her head, “What’s that?”
“I have a feeling, unproven of course, that it may have to do with you beating the stuffing out of him last evening.” A large grin replaced the smirk, “Twice if I recall what I was told, correctly.”
The quick rap of knuckles on the door broke up the conversation. They both looked up as Willow and Xander walked into the living room. “Hi,” Willow chirped. Her eyes quickly scanned the room. “Where’s Buffy?” she asked, sitting in a chair across from Faith.
“She’s got somethin’ else goin’ on today,” Faith watched as Xander dropped onto the couch. “Xand,” she stated flatly.
“Ooh!” Willow was bouncing in her chair, “I bet she’s with Angel”
Faith sighed and rolled her eyes, “She ain’t there, she had somethin’ else she had ta look after.”
“Oh,” Willow looked crestfallen. “What else would she have to do?”
Faith shrugged, “None of my business.” She looked at the witch, “Can you pull up the plans for City Hall? We need to figger out where the Mayor’s gonna stash his Hot rocks, so we can steal ‘em and destroy ‘em before somethin’ bad happens.”
Willow nodded, “I can pull them up on my laptop. Did you need just the floor plans or will you need something more detailed?”
“We’ll start with the floor plans and go from there. Once we know where he’s gonna put it, we can look for ways in and out, any alarm systems, shit like that.”
“What about magic?” Willow asked. “He may use magic to protect it as well as regular security systems.”
“That makes sense,” Giles nodded. “Being as careful as he seems so far, it would be a smart precaution for him to take.”
“K,” Faith answered, “How do we beat it?”
“I like to wrap my hand around it...” Xander suddenly realized what he’d said. “The bat!” he yelled, “I like to wrap my hands around the bat and beat it!” Giles and Willow were staring at him, dumbstruck. Faith was trying not to laugh. “NO!” he yelled again, “Not like that! I like to hit it, hit with the bat, the bat in my hands!” He hid his flaming face in his hands, “Oh God, kill me now,” he muttered.
Faith rolled off the couch and onto the floor, gasping for breath. “Man,” she wheezed, “Is it always like this here? I shoulda attended more meetin’s.” She was wiping the tears from her eyes and looking at Willow, “Red,” she giggled, “You gotta breath.” She took another gulp of air, “Sometime soon, Red.” Faith sat up and leaned against the couch, calming herself, but unable to get rid of the grin. “You ok, G?” she asked the Watcher.
“N-no,” he stuttered, “I’m just trying to wipe the last few moments from my mind.” He sighed, “Perhaps I’ll avail myself of a scotch after you’ve left. A rather large one.” He stood and pulled his wallet out of his front pocket. He unfolded it and removed a couple of bills, “Here,” he waved them at Xander, “Pop off and get some donuts if you please.” He rolled his eyes when Faith started to giggle again. A small sigh escaped his lips, “I was so hoping to avoid another foray into locker room humour.”
“I’m on it,” Xander grabbed the money from Giles’ outstretched hand and ran for the door.
“I do like the jelly ones,” Giles only heard the door slam in response. He looked at the two girls, “Can we get back to business now?” He walked around the coffee table and moved Faith’s feet to the floor, “Thank you. You two use the dining table, while I continue to peruse these volumes for ways to destroy the box.”
“No probs, G,” Faith stood. “C’mon Red, let’s get this show on the road.” The two girls moved over to the table and cleared some books from the side of the table. Willow set up her lap top and Faith moved another chair so they were side by side.
“This won’t take long,” Willow said. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, Faith watched the screens change and windows pop up as the hacker went to work. “This looks like it,” Willow whispered. She glanced at Faith, “It’s the records portion of the City Planning Office. Now all I have to do is find the records we’re looking for.” Her hand over the mouse started to twitch and click as she scrolled through the screens. “Aha,” she muttered, “These are the plans for civic buildings.”
Faith nodded and watched as Willow concentrated on the screen. “You’re good at this, Red,” she smiled. “I wouldn’t a known where to start.”
“Uhm, these really aren’t supposed to be available to the public.” There was a slight pink tinge to Willow’s cheeks, “They really need to upgrade their security.”
“Wouldn’t that make your job a little tougher?” Giles asked from the couch.
“Depends,” Willow was focussed on the screen in front of her. “If they go to something like what they use to protect the nuclear launch codes, then that would make it a little more difficult, but not impossible.”
“I see,” he smiled, “So I shan’t be sending any letters recommending that they look into it any time soon?”
Willow snorted, “It would be a challenge, but I don’t need it.” She smiled at her lap top, “Here you are Faith, where do you want to go first?”
Faith looked at the drawing on the screen, “We’ll start in the basement and work our way up.”
Willow pulled up the drawing for the basement of city hall. “There seems to be a lot of tunnel entrances here,” she glanced at Faith.
The brunette nodded, “Yeah, and they’re all marked ‘Sewer Access’, hmm.” She tilted her head to the side as she thought, “Makes sense though...” her voice trailed off. Willow looked at her expectantly. “Yeah,” Faith answered herself. She turned to face the redhead, “If you had a pile o’ henchmen, especially ones that were allergic to sunlight, that’d be the best way to sneak’em in and out. Any time a day or night, nobody would know.
Willow blinked, “You’re right. Do you think that’s where he’ll keep the box?”
Faith thought for a moment, “Nah,” she shook her head. “Easy access in and out without bein’ seen. It’ll work both ways, so he won’t keep it there.” Willow pulled up the plans for the first floor. “Nope,” Faith said almost immediately. “Too open to the public, there’ll be people all over the place.”
The redhead popped open another window, “What about this one? She asked. “It looks like it’s mostly offices?”
Faith nodded, her eyes tracking back and forth over the plans. “It’ll be quieter at night, but still too busy during the day.” She stared at it for a moment longer, “Can ya save it so we can come back to it?”
Willow nodded, “Yeah,” she minimized it and opened the third floor plans.
“Hmm,” Faith’s finger tapped against the cleft in her chin. Her finger tapped the screen, “That’s his office...” she muttered under her breath. She peered at the rest of the rooms on the floor, her mind working over the possibilities. “Nah,” she sat back in the chair. “‘Cept for a janitor’s closet, not really any place ta keep it.”
Willow shrugged, “Last floor,” she whispered as she opened the plans.
Faith’s brow furrowed and she leaned forward in her chair. Her head tilted to the side, her eyes darted back and forth across the screen. For a minute Willow watched her, waiting. “Yeah... yeah, I think that’s it.” Faith’s body tensed, leaning in closer, her head moved slowly back and forth. “It makes sense,” she shrugged. “Red,” she didn’t take her eyes off the screen. “Can you overlay this plan on top of the last one?”
“Umm, maybe,” She blushed slightly. “I have to save the files and use another program, but I should be able to.” The mouse started to flit across the screen as the witch concentrated. “That one,” as a program started to load.
“You’re pretty good at this shit, Red,” Faith said as they waited for the program to load.
Willow shrugged, “From what we found out on Friday, you shouldn’t have a problem with this either.”
Faith laughed, “I ain’ got the time ta screw around with this. I’m more of an action girl.”
Willow smiled, “Maybe, but I think you’ll catch on pretty quick.” She looked at the screen, “Okay, it’s ready.” Faith watched as the girl opened both files and overlapped them, “Now what?”
Faith looked at the plans, “Can you rotate the top one to the left?” The cursor moved to the corner and dragged the diagram around. “Better, now can you line this wall up with that one?” Willow clicked on a line and moved it over. Faith’s hand hovered over Willow’s, “May I?”
The redhead smirked, “Not long at all.”
She moved her hand away and watched as Faith lined up the plans to match. “Perfect,” the brunette smiled. She turned to the witch, “Whadda ya see?”
Willow shrugged, “A whole bunch of funny lines and little numbers, what am I looking for?”
Faith smiled and pointed at the screen, “See that space marked ‘Meeting Room 3’?”
Willow leaned forward and stared at where Faith was pointing, “Yeah, now I do, what about it?”
“It’s on the fourth floor, wadda ya see underneath it?”
“Umm, it looks like an office,” Willow squinted at the screen. “Do you know whose it is?”
Faith grinned, “Sure do.” She stood and looked down at Willow, “And I know where he’s gonna stash the box.” She turned toward the living room, “Hey G-man, c’mere, we got this figgered out.”
“What have you got?” Giles pulled himself off of the sofa and walked toward the girls. He stopped beside Faith and looked at the screen, “Interesting, but I have no idea what I’m looking at.”
“Red overlaid the fourth and third floors of city hall,” Faith’s finger sketched around the building. “This rooms on the fourth floor and its right above the mayor’s office.” She jabbed the screen, “That’s where he’s gonna keep it. This here,” she pointed at a line on the plans, “Says this part’s blocked off for renovation. The only way up to the room is from this back stairway. The only way up is from the basement.” She had a smile on her face, “See, it’s perfect.”
Giles and Willow stared at the screen, “I’m not quite following you,” he answered.
“Me either,”
“K,” Faith sat down again and pointed at the screen. “The conference room is right over the mayor’s office.” She tapped the screen and Willow glared at her, “Sorry, Red,” She moved the mouse and separated the floors. Pointing at a line on the fourth floor, “This line across the hallway says that the area is blocked off for renovations, no access is allowed. The only way into this area is from these stairs here.” She moved her finger a few inches to the corner of the building. “The neat thing about these stairs is they been blocked off on all other floors ‘cept the basement.”
Giles nodded, “Go on.”
“The basement has all those nifty sewer accesses, right Red?”
“Ooh!” Willow squirmed in her seat. “The whole area is isolated with no access except for whoever he wants to get in there.” Faith nodded at her. “That’s a perfect place to keep it. He can get to it whenever he wants and nobody will see who he’s got protecting it.”
“Yes, well,” Giles was holding his chin in his hand, “That’s all well and good. But how are you going to get in there and get it out?” He removed his glasses and started to clean them. “Surely you can see the inherent dangers of going in through the basement and fighting your way in? Not to mention having to drag the box with you as you fight your way out?”
Faith had a smirk on her face, “Don’t have to.” She pointed at the plans for the fourth floor again, “The answer’s right there.”
Giles peered at the layout and shrugged his shoulders. “What am I missing?” Willow was looking confused as well.
“Right there, in the middle of the room. It’s just an outline, but it’s for a skylight. Up the outside of the building, ‘cross the roof ta the conference room, and Voila!” She flipped up her hands, “One box of rocks, and we’re makin’ our way back to the library.”
“I see,” Giles was peering at the plans on Willow’s lap top. “It does make sense, but how will you know for sure where it is?”
“One of us is gonna call Alan Finch and ask.”
“Oh!” Giles brow furrowed for a moment, “Do you think he’ll tell you? Calling him and asking may jeopardize his safety.”
Faith nodded, “Yeah, he should. We can get Red ta go in and talk to him about bein’ the Mayor’s assistant. Kinda like a high school report thingy ya know.”
“Good idea, Faith, she can pass him a note while she’s sitting in his office,” Giles smiled. “She can call him tomorrow morning from the library and make an appointment.”
“Whoa!” Willow jumped up from her chair. “Who’s going where? And doing what?” Her head started shaking from side to side, “Oh no, missy, I am not going in there to talk to some guy I don’t know about something a demon wants to eat! He may want to eat me! I am not all action growly girl with slayer strength, no sirree bob am I going anywhere near that place not even if you offered me money would I go near there!” She stopped shaking her head when she stumbled and grabbed onto the back of the chair to steady herself. “Head rush,” she mumbled.
Faith had a smirk on her face, “Ya think? I couldn’t follow yer head it was shakin’ so fast. It’s a wonder it didn’t bounce off inta the corner.”
“It’s not funny, Faith,” Willow huffed. “I’m scared.”
“Who’s scared?” Xander walked into the room. Everybody looked up to see a white smear on his upper lip.
“Doin’ a little blow there Xand?” Faith’s eyes were dancing. “I didn’t know ya had that kinda wild streak.”
“Huh?” he asked his eyes darting around the room. “What’d I do?”
“By the looks of it, I’d say there are no sugar donuts left,” Giles moved his index finger across his top lip. “The evidence is as plain as the nose on your face that you didn’t wait til you returned before availing yourself of the recently acquired pastries.”
Xander’s eyebrows furrowed, “Can you repeat that in English? I must have missed something.”
Faith snorted as Giles spun around and stomped into the kitchen. “Bloody Americans,” he muttered as he disappeared around the corner.
“Nice one, Xand. Piss off the guy that buys the donuts.” Faith grabbed the box from him and popped open the lid. She held it out toward Willow, “Ya want one Red?”
“Thanks Faith,” she stretched her hand toward the box. “Wait a sec,” her hand hovered over the open box, “Are you trying to bribe me with a donut?”
Faith blinked, and then laughed, “Nah, I know a donut won’t work with you. Xand on the other hand, would be doin’ naked handstands in a gay bar.”
“No, sorry not me, I’m a manly man, no doing anything in a gay bar,” he shuddered.
“A whole box of donuts Xand,” Faith smiled and wiggled the box at him. “A whole box,” she whispered, “All yours, nobody to share with, nobody to take yer fave’s away, just you.”
He looked at the box, his eyes scanning the contents, his mind slowly turning as he saw each of his favourites in place. “Uhh,” his hand came up and scratched by his ear, “How many would I have to do?”
“Alexander Harris!” Willow screeched.
“What?” his eyes wide, he jumped back; his head snapped left and right, “I didn’t do anything!”
Faith laughed, “Yeah, but you were startin’ ta think about it.”
“Faith!” Willow turned her gaze on the brunette, “How can you tease him like that? You’re just mean.”
“Sorry Red,” Faith put the box down on the table. “I’m just playin’ with him. Nobody’s doin’ handstands for nuthin’, k?” She sighed, “I’m just havin’ fun, Red,” she shrugged her shoulders, “Helps get me through the day ya know?”
“It’s fun to pick on people?” Willow fumed.
“I wasn’t pickin’ on him,” Faith growled, “I was showin’ him things he could do for donuts. Givin’ him options, that’s all.” Faith dropped onto the couch and picked a book up off of the coffee table. “C’mon, we gotta figger out how ta kill that box.”
Buffy walked into the house, she could hear her mom in the kitchen and her sister upstairs. The TV in the living room was turned down low. She peeked around the corner and Faith’s left hand came up in a slow wave. “Tween the connection and the noise ya made slammin’ the door, it ain’t hard ta figger out yer home.” Faith put the book in her hand on the couch beside her. She turned to the blond with a warm smile, “How’d yer day go?”
Buffy picked up the book and dropped it on the coffee table, “You have homework?” She sat next to Faith, their thighs almost touching. “By the looks of things, I’d say it was much better than yours.”
Faith sighed, “Yeah, wouldn’t take a lot ta beat mine.”
Buffy turned her head slightly and tilted it so she could see the brunette. “Did something happen at Giles?”
Faith shrugged and stretched her arm along the back of the couch, “Let’s say Red has a different sense o’ humour than I do and leave it at that.”
“Were you picking on her? Is that what happened?”
The dark slayer shook her head, “Nah, I mighta been teasin’ X-man though.”
Buffy nodded her head, “Yeah, she wouldn’t like that either. Did you get it all straightened out?” “Eventually, I got her lookin’ inta how to destroy the box and she bit.”
“The box?” Buffy’s eyebrows furrowed, and Faith laughed.
“Nah, though that might work, it ain’t part of the plan. We wait till Kakistos drops it off on Tuesday, then we break into City Hall and steal it. Once it’s back at the library, Red and G-man, do the mojo thing and destroy it.” She smiled at the blond, “Any questions?”
Buffy turned her back on Faith and scooted down the couch. She lay back on the cushions so her head was resting on Faith’s lap. She smiled up at the brunette while she hung her legs over the arm of the couch. “No, don’t think so. Giles is okay with it?”
“Think so,” Faith nodded, “He may wanna tweak it a bit ’tween now and Tuesday, but I think he’s good.”
Buffy smiled, “He does that occasionally.” She reached up and picked Faith’s arm off the couch. Entwining their fingers, she pulled them down so their hands lay on her stomach. “Comfy?” she smiled up at the dark slayer.
“Yeah?” Faith squeaked out. She cleared her throat, “I’m good,” a small grin on her face. “How’d yer ‘date’ go?”
Buffy bit her bottom lip, “Okay. We had a couple of mocha’s and chatted.” She shrugged her shoulders. “It didn’t suck, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“So, when’re ya movin’ in with him?” Faith asked as she looked away from the blond.
Buffy snorted, “We’ve been through this before, Faith. I’m not marrying, or moving in with him. He’s just my prom date. It’s no big deal.”
“Yeah?” Faith looked down at the blond, “All them chick flicks you watch say different.” She ran her free hand through her hair as she looked away. “And we all know Hollywood don’t make shit up.”
Buffy snorted and tugged on Faith’s hand. She waited until the dark slayer was looking at her, “You can believe what you want, but I’m not giving you up for him.”
Faith sighed, “K, I can deal with that.”
“Besides, you have other things to worry about,” the blond’s eyes twinkled, “Like what you’re going to wear to school tomorrow, who you’re going to hang out with, you know, really important stuff.” Faith’s eyebrow arched up at the girl. “Faith,” Buffy stated seriously, “This is important stuff for high schoolers.” Buffy giggled, “You should see your face, if your eyes get any wider, they’ll fall out.”
Faith leaned back into the couch, “Why me?” she asked quietly. “Cuz I’m teasing you silly,” Buffy answered.
Buffy looked up when she heard her mother walk into the living room. “Hey mom,” she said from her spot in Faith’s lap. She could feel the girl’s thigh muscles tighten. “I’m home.”
“I see,” Joyce’s head tilted as she looked at the two girls. Buffy seemed comfortable, Faith a little less so, there was something about the position they were in. It twinged at the back of her mind, but it wasn’t important, at least it didn’t seem to be at the moment. “Why are you in here, Buffy?” she asked.
Faith swallowed, and started to flush, “Uhh…”
“No Faith,” she said sternly, “This isn’t about you, this is about why she isn’t in the kitchen helping me.” Her hands moved to her hips, “She’s been out all afternoon while you were at Mr. Giles’. So she needs to get into the kitchen and help me with dinner.”
“Mo-om,” Buffy whined, “I’m comfortable, I don’t wanna get up.”
“I’m sure Faith is thrilled with you using her as a pillow, Joyce huffed, “Now get up and help me.”
“It’s ok, Mrs. S.” Faith smiled, “She ain’t botherin’ me.”
“Kitchen, now,” Joyce barked.
“Fine,” Buffy slowly sat up and swung her legs off the couch. Faith had a small smirk on her face. “You’ll get yours later, F.”
“She will set the table later if that’s what you mean,” Joyce turned and walked away from the girls.
“Thanks, B,” Faith grumbled, “Now she’s pissed at both of us.”
Buffy shook her head, “Nah, she’s just doing her ‘You have chores to do” routine. She smiled, “Something about us preparing to leave the nest or something. I’ll call you when it’s time to set the table.” Buffy leaned forward and kissed Faith on the forehead, “Go back to your homework from Giles.”
