Pairing: Angel/Spike/Xander
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Bubbysbub managed to get this back to me despite being sick so she deserves much praise and well wishes.

Reviews: Supernaturalfan - Thankyou, I hope your feeling better and I'm glad your enjoying, that's what I like to hear.
Daeomae - I'm glad you like how I've portrayed the Wes, Angel relationship in this verse, it means that you'll probably like how I've written this next chapter.
LadyVirgo - I'm glad you enjoyed the boys crying scene, after being through everything they've been through it would be quite detrimental to their health if they tried to keep it all in.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.
Chapter Forty-Four
Hidden behind a crate, Dawn watched Glory’s minions run past the dark alley she hid in as she desperately tried to quiet her ragged breathing and review the situation. On the plus side, she hadn’t been caught and dragged back to Glory yet. But she had been running for an hour and was tired out, hopelessly lost with no phone and no backup, and soon Glory would get bored and impatient and come join the chase, and then Dawn’s chances of survival would be almost nil.
Glancing around and deciding that the minions were gone she stood up and began to run in the opposite direction. The area was full of old abandoned factories and interconnecting alleys. The place was a rabbit warren and Dawn hoped that she would be able to find her way out. She ran around another corner and straight into another person, causing Dawn to fall to the dirty alley floor.
“Don’t cry little girl, mummy’s here,” Dawn froze at the singsong childlike tone and hesitantly gazed up at the person she had bumped into. Dawn’s eyes grew wide at the sight of Drusilla swaying in front of her. She frantically crab walked backwards until her back hit the wall and she didn’t even dare to look down at the sludge over her hands from the dirty alley beneath her. Dawn searched madly with her eyes in the surrounding area, looking for some sort of weapon to use against the vampire. Unfortunately for her, it seemed that this part had been recently cleaned out, as it was barren of debris.
“Dru… Drusilla,” Dawn managed to finally get out, not knowing what else to say. She had heard many horror stories about this particular vampire and knew that despite her insanity, Drusilla was up there with the most brutal vampires.
“Don’t fret, I just wanted to see who had replaced me in my Spike’s heart. What makes you so different?” Dawn stared up at the crazy vampire before standing up and finally answering. Drusilla seemed to be very muddled.
“I haven’t… replaced you. Angel and Xander are with Spike, not me,” Dawn explained as if to a simpleton, which she supposed Drusilla was in some respect.
“Not stupid, he used to take care of me, treat me like a princess. Now that’s you, why?” Drusilla growled. Dawn didn’t have an answer for that, was completely flabbergasted by the question and couldn’t see the connection at all. How Spike treated her had nothing to do with Drusilla, because she left him.
“You left him and then the initiative chipped him. He was all alone and harmless, Xander took him in Xander loved him, he just looks after me cos I’m precious to Xander.” She attempted to explain but Drusilla was having none of it. She moved forward right into Dawn’s personal space and stared deep into Dawn.
“Oh, look at that, look at that. The light!” Drusilla cooed at Dawn as the human girl tried to stay completely still but unable to stop her shivering
“Oh, it's so pure! Such pure green energy!” Dawn gasped, fear flooding through her.
“No, no you can’t tell anyone.” She whispered urgently but Drusilla seemed to not be able to hear her.
“Oh, it's so beautiful.” Drusilla cooed.
“Well, lookie, lookie, seems that I’ve finally found my key, precious.” Drusilla and Dawn both whirled around to find Glory at the end of the alley, staring at Dawn in a proprietary fashion and smiling widely.
Glory knew.

Angel pulled up behind Wesley’s abandoned car at the edge of the park, at the address that had been on Wesley’s computer. The second car with the rest of the team pulled up right behind them as Spike and Angel vaulted out of the convertible. They could smell blood on the air; Wesley’s blood. It was all the rest of the group could do to keep up with the vampires as they rushed over the road and into the park. Spike whipped out his cell phone as they ran, he could now hear Wesley’s heart and it wasn’t beating properly. The vampires didn’t move cautiously, they could tell that Wesley was the only human in the park and their noses and ears led them straight to him.
“Oh god, Wes, someone call an ambulance!” Gunn cried out in undisguised anguish from the ground next to the barely conscious man, who was close to bleeding out from the inept knife cut across his throat. All those looking on could clearly see how Gunn felt about Wesley at that moment.
Gunn quickly striped off his tee and used it as an impromptu bandage to try and slow the flow of blood. Cordelia, Tara, and Willow moved out and searched the area for any trace of Dawn while the men tried to help Wesley. Wesley had had trouble focusing since they got there, clearly out of it, but in front of their eyes he rallied and finally focusing on Gunn’s face, he mouthed one word.
“Sorry.”
Gunn had tears in his eyes as he wiped Wesley’s sweat soaked hair out of his eyes. Seeing the Englishman like this had stripped all of Gunn’s defences and he didn’t want to hide behind them anymore, not when Wesley could die.
“It’s okay, babe, just stay with me, don’t worry about that now, you’ll be at the hospital soon.” Gunn didn’t notice the endearment that slipped out, Wesley did, but in his current state he couldn’t really process the information. He could feel himself fading and he needed to concentrate on the one thing, on the one piece of information that Angel needed.
“Dawn…” he rasped and then started to choke.
“It’s okay Wesley,” Angel tried to reassure the human, “I know why you gave her to them, we’ll talk about it when you’re better.” Wesley shook his head in a definite ‘no’ gesture.
“Hid, didn’t betray… to knights,” Wesley slumped back exhausted, not knowing how he would get the strength to tell the rest. Angel stared at Wesley in surprise, he didn’t betray them?
“Wes, where is Dawn now?” Xander asked gently trying not to convey to the critically injured man how desperate they were for the answer. Wes rallied again, not caring about himself, he had got himself into this mess, he now needed to tell them, and the world was at stake.
“Ran…” He coughed again but managed to get out, “Glory,” he lay back exhausted ringing in his ears unable to focus on any one person anymore. The lover’s exchanged looks as Gunn hovered next to Wesley, unbearably close to tears.
“We have to go track her,” Spike wanted to run off right then to find Dawn before Glory did, if she hadn’t already.
“What about Wesley?” Xander asked, knowing that getting to Dawn was a priority but not wanting to leave anyone behind either.
“Xan, you stay here, watch over Wesley and once the ambulance has gone follow it in the car, Spike and I will take Faith with us and go find Dawn. We will meet you at the hospital, okay?” Angel asked his human lover, knowing they needed to get going but also knowing that Xander had to be fine with this before they took off.
“Sure but what do I tell them about all these bodies?” Xander asked referring to the bodies of the knights which they had ignored so far.
“Just say you found it like this, they shouldn’t ask too many questions, just be careful please baby boy,” Angel hugged Xander to him for a moment before letting go.
“We will, just find her please,” Xander begged brushing his hand against Spike’s. The vampires took off running calling Faith to follow them as Xander sank back down next to Wesley and Gunn, praying that he would be okay.
Spike, Angel and Faith took off down the nearest alley as an ambulance pulled up on the other side of the road. The vampires used their noses to follow Dawn’s scent but they were afraid that they were too late, that Glory would have found Dawn before they got there. The night was quiet except for the pounding of their feet against the concrete and Faith’s breathing. The three weaved through the alley’s never slowing down, sure of their way. They turned a corner and stopped in shock. At the other end of the alley was Drusilla humming and dancing by herself, but what had them standing still in shock was the torn jacket in her hands. Dawn’s jacket.
“Drusilla,” Angel stepped forward in game face, voice hard and cold, sounding so much like Angelus that it had shivers running down Spike’s spine.
“Daddy!” Drusilla shrieked spinning in circles. “Met a lovely emerald whispering about angels and fairies but don’t eat the walls, they don’t have aunties.” She giggled like a schoolgirl and then stopped, staring at the three of them. Spike froze at the mention of an emerald, he had heard that the key had originally been green energy, and coupled with the fact that insane people could see what Dawn really was, they might be in serious trouble.
“Dru love, what exactly happened with the emerald? Was there someone else here?” Spike asked patiently in a soothing voice that the vampire had always responded to in the past.
“The nappy heard us talking and dragged my pretty emerald away, was taking her to the mouth of hell.”
“Oh fuck,” Faith exclaimed, “Sunnydale.”
“Dru are you sure, it’s important.” Angel asked trying to keep his anger under control.
“Silly Angel beast I’m not simple, the stars told me the lady who hurt my Spike will use that energy to make a rift through the worlds.” Drusilla laughed again, “then I can dance with a blobby creature.” Drusilla spread her arms wide and bobbed up and down pretending to be whatever creature she had seen comes through the rift. Faith tried not to laugh at the silly picture this made but then all mirth was stolen from her as Angel roared out in frustration. It was clear that Glory had Dawn and knew that she was the key. He was furious and Glory knew because of Drusilla. A stake was withdrawn from his coat and Angel threw it at his childe with deadly accuracy. Drusilla was too much of a liability to let wander around. As she dusted Spike shed a silent tear for her but he understood his Sire’s decision so did not say anything just trudged after his Sire back to the car. They had a young woman to rescue from a hellgod.

Gunn sat in the waiting room feeling numb. He felt like a statue, completely and utterly inanimate. Wesley was in surgery and had been there for what felt like days, though Gunn knew it hadn’t been that long. Wesley had passed out and had not come round before he had been taken into surgery. Gunn was scared that it had been too late and Wesley would die on the operating table. Xander sat next to him, just being there, cradling a forgotten cup of coffee in his hands while Tara and Willow sat on his other side. Their group had shrunk dramatically from when the Sunnydalers had first appeared in LA, and Gunn was scared that another person would be taken permanently from their number. He was brought out of his thoughts by the arrival of the doctor who had been assigned Wesley’s case. He stood up stiffly, mentally preparing himself for the worst.
“How is he doc?” Xander asked, as Gunn found he couldn’t form the words.
“He pulled through and baring complications in recovery he should be okay, it will hurt for a while, and it will be a while before he can talk again, but yes he should be fine.” Gunn slumped in relief and felt Willow there supporting him.
“Can I see him doc?” Gunn asked needing to see the proof with his own eyes.
“Just for a couple of minutes and only the one person.” The doctor replied, usually they only let immediate family in, but he had been told that Mr Wyndham-Pryce’s family was all in England and the young black man in front of him was acting like a lover so the doctor would bend the rules for him. Gunn stood there not sure now that he did want to go in, he didn’t know if he could stand seeing Wesley so pale with tubes running in and out of his body. Besides, it wasn’t even like they were dating, he didn’t even know if Wesley was gay. Why should he go in and see Wesley when the others couldn’t, they had as much right to see Wesley as he did. Xander gave him a push and Gunn started moving forward as if on autopilot. The three girls and Xander watched him go until he had walked through the door into Wesley’s private room.
“When are those two going to get a clue?” Cordelia asked exasperated for them.
“I think that if they are still like this after the latest fiasco is over we should set them up.” Willow suggested. Xander just kept out of it, instead staring at the elevator near them. He had a feeling… As he watched the elevator doors opened and he smiled to see he had been right. Angel, Spike and Faith strolled over to them.
“Did you find her?” Xander got in first and watched Angel’s frown lines get more pronounced as Spike hugged him.
“How’s Wesley?” Faith asked ignoring their question. As her Watcher she was concerned for his welfare.
“He pulled through okay, Gunn’s in with him now…” Willow explained and then stopped at seeing the next elevator load of people spreading out around Wesley’s room.
“What…” Tara began but Angel knowing the question cut her off with the answer.
“They’re part of Gunn’s old gang, I asked them to keep an eye on Wesley, the rest are downstairs. We have a huge problem and we needed all the able-bodies we could get.” He explained.
“What’s wrong?” Xander asked seeing how stiff both his lovers were standing and the tension they seemed to carry.
“Glory has Dawn,” Angel finally told them, not knowing how to soften the blow.
“Does she know?” Willow asked urgently. Spike just had to nod his head and Cordelia had to sit down suddenly before she fell over.
“Oh God, poor Dawnie.” Xander looked from one vampire to the other, Dawn’s situation explained most of the tension but there was something else that had happened.
“What happened?” he asked again and glared at his lovers until they got the message that he wasn’t going to let it drop until they told him what he wanted to know. Finally Spike broke.
“Clip notes version. We found Drusilla with Dawn’s sweater, seems Dawn ran into her, Drusilla worked out she was the key and Glory overheard. Angel staked Drusilla.” Xander’s head was reeling but he pulled Spike closer just lending his support, not knowing what to say.
“What do we do now?” Willow asked.
“We’re going back to Sunnydale.”
