Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.
Beta: Bubbysbub managed to get this back to me despite being sick so she deserves much praise and well wishes.

Reviews: LadyVirgo, thankyou. The Dawn speech was hard to write, I'm glad you liked.
Storyscriber - Yes Wesley's attitude can be annoying but I think its a product of his past and he is getting better as time goes on, thankyou
Daeomae - Remember Dawn is only fourteen and watching Wesley have his throat cut must be terrifying. Thankyou as always.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.
Chapter Forty-Three
Dawn crouched frozen to the spot as the one knight who had heard her gasp took a couple of steps forward, moving towards her. Dawn’s heart was beating wildly in her chest and she couldn’t breathe. Wesley was lying on the ground, slowly dying as the knights paid absolutely no attention to him, and she was about to be pulled out from behind the bushes where they would kill her or find out she was the key and kill her. Either way, it still ended in her death and she didn’t know what to do.
A noise distracted her from her tumbling thoughts and she watched as the knight who had been moving towards her toppled over, a crossbow bolt through his chest. The other knights had moved further away and had not noticed their companion’s death. For a moment Dawn thought that the others must have found her and she was safe, she began to get up only to flatten herself to the ground when she saw who had triggered the crossbow bolt.
The knights had formed a circle near Wesley’s dying body and were chanting together. “The key is the link. The link must be severed. Such is the will of God.”
“You really think he is going to help you?” Jinx asked holding the crossbow he had used to shoot the other knight with. The knights turned around and in record speed had their swords out of their holsters and had them pointing at Glory’s minions, most of who were shouldering axes.
“I fear your faith is gravely misplaced.” Jinx told them sincerely before the demons attacked. They fought quickly, the knights more than a match for the demons. Dawn watched the whole thing, not trusting herself to move, scared of being discovered and still wanting to get to Wesley if there was a chance, even though his eyes had closed and she had no idea if he was even alive anymore. It was lucky for Wesley that somehow none of the combatants stepped on his body.
Jinx found himself against a tree with a knight right in front of him. The knight advanced and Jinx moved sideways scared out of his mind, finding himself without a weapon. Unfortunately Jinx tripped over a tree root and fell on his butt. The knight, Orlando stood over him, lifting his sword high.
“Shall we test your faith now?” Orlando asked mockingly. He stabbed downwards as Jinx cringed. However before the sword connected with Jinx flesh a hand appeared and grabbed the sword blade.
“Never send a minion to do a god's work.” Glory quipped, the knights gasped and Dawn trembled all over from her hiding place. Glory was there. She backhanded Orlando who went flying back. Glory engaged the other knights. They soon fell at her feet, nothing could fight Glory and win, she was a god. Glory stabbed one knight with his own sword and used it on another before stalking towards Orlando studying the sword in her hand.
“Hey, nice sword.” Glory pointed it at Orlando’s face as he knelt there ready to die for this righteous cause. “Bet it hurts.” Before he could answer she used it to slice across his neck, separating his head from his shoulders. Glory dropped the sword on the ground and sighed, at least now the knights wouldn’t be hanging around. She surveyed the dead knights and paused when her eyes spied a figure that was out of place among the dead knights and demons.
“Jinx,” Glory yelled and the demon in question was in front of her in a moment.
“Yes, my mistress, how can my unworthiness serve your radiance?” he grovelled bowing low.
“The guy in glasses who has his throat cut, does he look familiar?” Glory demanded an answer. Jinx studied the body in question, making sure it was whom he thought it was before replying while Glory stood fidgeting beside him.
“That is one of the vampire’s group, most incomparable Glory,” Glory looked around at the surroundings, wondering why he would be here by himself.
“Search the area, there might be more of the vampire’s friends around,” Glory commanded. Dawn knew that they would see her, she wasn’t hidden well enough as soon as they came closer they would see her. She had two choices, either she could stay where she was and wait til they found her or she could run. If she ran she would have the element of surprise and even though they would probably end up catching her at least she would have tried, instead of just waiting for death. If she ran she would be leaving Wesley behind but he was probably dead by now anyway, and it wasn’t like she could help him if she stayed anyway. Dawn watched the minions search the area moving closer to her, if she was going to run it would have to be soon. Dawn watched as the demons disturbed a cat that went shooting across the park, on the opposite side to Dawn. The demons stopped to watch it; this was the break Dawn had been waiting for. She sprinted out of the undergrowth and took off towards the road; she had made it half way across the wide-open space before she heard a shout behind her.
“It’s the Slayer’s sister, grab her.” Dawn sped up, feet thudding with every step against the hard dirt. She knew that if Glory joined the chase she had no hope but against the demons she hoped she could hold her own. She hadn’t been in her school’s athletic club for nothing. Her heart thudding in her throat Dawn raced across the road hoping that their was no traffic, she didn’t have the time to slow down and check, if she did Glory’s minions would be on her and she couldn’t let that happen. Luckily for Dawn she was able to weave easily through the traffic without slowing down. She didn’t even try to head for Wesley’s car; she didn’t have the keys and couldn’t legally drive. Instead she shot down an alley way and weaved her way through the debris. Dawn hoped that she would be able to keep ahead of the minions long enough for the other’s to realise something was wrong and to come looking for her.

“You should go tell them!”
“Why me? You know them better,” Xander, Angel and Spike paused at the top of the Hyperion stairs, just out of sight as they listened to the heated conversation between Cordelia and Gunn. They exchanged looks, not knowing what the humans were talking about but correctly guessing that they were trying to work out who was going to tell them some upsetting news. Spike had had enough of sneaking behind the wall listening to their conversation so he strolled towards them. Cordelia jumped when she spotted him with Xander and Angel not to far behind. Gunn turned towards them and sighed.
“Tell us what?” Angel asked Cordelia bustled forward ignoring Angel’s question completely.
“Do you need anything? Can I get you a cup of blood?” She attempted to distract them but Angel as always, stubbornly wouldn’t let that happen.
“Cordelia, Tell us what?” Gunn came closer deciding that they might as well tell the boss what had been going on.
“Yall need to sit down and then we will tell you, okay man?” Xander went straight to the seats, knowing that something terrible had happened while they had been upstairs enjoying each other’s bodies. Spike moved closer to his Sire, gently placing a hand on Angel’s back, hoping to help calm him down.
“What. Happened?” Angel growled pushing back into Spike’s hand, glad that he had a childe so receptive to his needs.
“Um, two things have happened, are you sure you don’t want to sit down?” Cordelia asked nervously, for once at a loss for words on how to tell them.
“Cordelia! Just tell us,” Xander insisted, starting to feel nervous because of how edgy Cordelia seemed. Gunn could see that Cordelia was struggling to find the words and decided to take over.
“There was an incident with Glory earlier tonight,” Spike went to say something but Angel stopped him knowing that Gunn just needed to tell it in his own way.
“Anya left the hotel to go to the supermarket down the road without telling anyone. Glory must have had someone watching the hotel because she confronted Anya in the store.”
“Oh God,” Xander breathed hugging his legs to his chest. He knew what Gunn was about to say and he really didn’t want to hear it.
“I’m sorry, Anya is dead.” Xander started to rock, remembering the Anya that was newly human, how the world had confused her and how he had looked after her, helped her until she had better understood how human society now worked. Of course that hadn’t stopped her being blunt, but that had just been part of her charm.
Angel lowered his head, Glory really needed to die, she had killed too many of them. Unfortunately Angel didn’t know how to stop her. He felt powerless against her and knew that when they had gone up against her they had been lucky to escape. They hadn’t even damaged her though. Angel became aware of Cordelia and Gunn still fidgeting beside them and suddenly knew that there was something they weren’t saying.
“What haven’t you told us?” Spike pulled Angel towards the sofa so that the three lovers could be together while they absorbed the news.
“There is something else, we can’t find Wesley and Dawn, they’ve left the hotel.” Angel stood up at this news, in shock.
“How? When?” he asked not knowing exactly what to ask.
“I went to tell Dawn the bad news just before but she wasn’t in her room. The others are searching the hotel for her but Wesley is missing as well. That can’t be a coincidence.” Cordelia explained.
“Did the Watcher know about Anya?” Spike asked.
“Yeah, he seemed quite torn up about it, too.” Gunn supplied. Spike smirked knowing that Gunn had probably been watching Wesley closely. Sometimes he just wanted to knock their heads together, they just didn’t seem to have a clue.
“What did he do just before he disappeared?” Spike asked knowing that Gunn would know. The two of them kept tabs on each other, though they hadn’t worked out that their feelings were reciprocated.
“He was using the computer,” Gunn replied wondering what Spike was getting at. He was just so concerned for Wesley; he didn’t know what had been going through the Englishman’s mind.
“Well there you go then, search his computer, check his emails, he might have left some clue of what he had been up to.” Spike explained. Just then the others came back from their search of the hotel.
“They aren’t here, Dawn’s jacket has gone as well so she went willingly.” Tara told the group in the lobby. Angel decided it was time that he took charge.
“Willow, can you jump on Wesley’s computer, see if you can find anything that could tell us where they went or what he had been thinking. Maybe if you go through his latest research as well.” Willow just nodded and went towards the office the others trailing behind her. Angel sat down on the seat again, turning his attention to Xander who was rocking back and forth despite Spike’s best efforts to get him to stop. Angel knelt down in front of Xander and gently cupped the human’s head in his palms.
“Xander,” quietly Angel got Xander’s attention. “Talk to me,” he insisted. Xander glanced at Angel and noticed how the frown lines on his forehead were pronounced. He couldn’t help using one hand to try and smooth the lines. Spike chuckled and snuggled closer to Xander. The human then turned his attention to Spike and noticed how one purple bruise accented one cheekbone even more. Glory had done this and Xander was sick of the heartache and pain caused by the hellgod. So many fantastic people had died in such a short time, all because of Glory. Xander didn’t know how much more he could take. Suddenly he found himself crying and couldn’t stop, he tried to hold the tears back but they just made him choke and his throat and tongue hurt from trying to swallow the gut-wrenching sobs. Spike caught a big fat tear on his finger as it fell off Xander’s face while Angel just hugged Xander tight. They rubbed his back but didn’t try to stop him from crying knowing that he just needed to let it all out. Soon the vampires found themselves crying as well, letting out the emotions that had been twisting inside them, from everything that had happened since Spike and Xander had strolled into the Magic Box to announce that they were leaving. Finally Xander was able to lift his head from Spike’s shoulder and he squirmed out of their grasp enough to grab the box of tissues that had been sitting on the table. He cleaned himself out and then handed it to Angel.
“Here,”
“Thanks baby-boy,” Angel replied wiping his own tears up before passing the box to Spike. “You feeling better now?” Xander thought about it for a moment before replying.
“You know what, I think I am,” before Spike could add something to the conversation Cordelia came running out a sheaf of papers in her hand and the others moving at a more sedate pace behind her. She launched herself at the three lovers clearly upset, tears running down her face.
“I can’t believe he did it, I… I just can’t,” she murmured extremely upset. Angel looked up from where he was trying to comfort the cheerleader. He looked at Willow as if to say please explain.
“Angel um, I… um it seems that Wesley was in contact with the knights that tried to stop us getting out of Sunnydale.”
“WHAT!?” Angel exploded standing up in shock. “He What?” There must be some kind of mistake, Wesley would never betray them, Angel thought.
“I’m sorry Angel, he went to meet them tonight,” Willow paused scared of how Angel would take the next piece of news. “He organised to hand the key over to them tonight,” Willow told them.
“Dawn,” Spike exploded, “that slimy, double crossing ex-Watcher is giving them Dawn. Just wait til I get my hands on him. He doesn’t deserve a spine,” Spike ranted. Angel on the other hand was leaning towards disbelief.
“No, something else must be going on, Wesley wouldn’t do that to us, I took him in when he had nothing. Wes wouldn’t repay me like this. Are you sure he wasn’t being blackmailed or he had some other information that would explain this.” Angel asked Willow but Tara was the one to answer.
“We couldn’t find anything but the meeting was for half an hour ago, maybe we should go there and see if we can find them.” Tara didn’t stutter once, having felt comfortable around the others. Xander looked at his lovers and decided that he needed to be in charge for the time being as neither of his lovers could handle it.
“Right then, let’s saddle up and find out what we can.”
