Buffy stooped and pulled out the key to the mansion from its hiding place. A wan smile crossed her face, “Even when he was evil, he always left it here.” She grabbed the door handle and it pushed open. “That’s strange,” she muttered. “I would’ve sworn I locked it last week.”
“You locked it?” Faith’s eyebrows shot up. “Uhh, yeah?” Buffy stammered. “When?” “Last week,” Buffy blushed. “Why?” “Umm,” the blond looked away. She grabbed her hands and nervously shuffled her feet. “I stopped by for a couple minutes.” Faith stared at her. Buffy blushed and ducked her eyes. She could feel the anger radiating off of the brunette. “What?” she said mumbled at the ground. Faith’s eyes were slits, she was staring so hard, “Was. He. Here.” she spat out. Buffy’s head snapped up, her eyes wide, “No!” she yelped. “I was here for a different reason; the place hadn’t been touched since I killed him.” Her head dropped again, her voice was tiny, “I didn’t know he was back.” She looked back up, “Honest Faith, nothing had changed since Giles got rid of that Alphabet statue.” She looked out over the dried out garden. “There was no indication of anyone being inside.” Faith brought her left hand up and pinched the bridge of her nose, “Look, I don’t wanna start a fight with you.” Her arm dropped down to her side again, “I just find it weird that you come by here for some reason, and then, BAM!” Buffy jumped, Faith flung her arm toward where Angel was laying on the ground. “There he is,” she paused, “Your ex. So yeah, I’m wonderin’ what the fuck’s goin’ on.” Buffy was on the verge of tears, “I don’t know Faith, I really don’t.” She sniffled, “With everything that’s been happening lately, I just needed to make some sense out of my life. So I just came by to say goodbye, to close that chapter of my life and move forward.” She pointed at Angel, “Is this the PTB, telling me I’m supposed to be with him and not with you?” She stared at Faith, “Or is it something else? How the hell am I supposed to know?” Tears were gathering in the corners of her eyes. “All I want is for some semblance of normalcy in my life. Not dreams about girlfriends, and ex-lovers coming back from who knows where. Just one week where nothing happens,” She blinked at Faith, “Is that too much to ask for?” Faith rolled her eyes and sighed; she stepped toward the blond and opened her arms. “I’m sorry, B,” she pulled the girl towards her. She felt the surge of their connection when she wrapped her arms around her. After a moment, Buffy’s arms slowly reached around and linked her hands behind Faith. “I wasn’t thinkin’ about that,” Faith spoke quietly into Buffy’s ear. “Sometimes, I just go off the deep end, without lookin’ at all the facts. Once in a while I don’t even look at any of the facts.” They stood like that in the darkness for a few more moments. Faith pulled back and looked at the blond, her eyes were wide, “Did you say you wanted to be with me?” Her voice was higher than normal. “You, umm, caught that,” Buffy buried her head in Faith’s shoulder. “That’s kinda why I came to say goodbye.” Her head shot up, “To him, not you. I came to say goodbye to him.” Faith smiled and let go of the other slayer. There was a smirk on her face, “I kinda’ got that the first time.” She pointed toward the vampire still out cold on the ground. “Do ya wanna take him inside?” Buffy looked at him and just nodded. “Is there somethin’ we can tie him up with?” “Huh?” Buffy focused on Faith again. “Yeah, yeah there is. There are some manacles on the wall in the living room.” “Yow, B,” Faith was grinning now, “You really do have a kinky streak.” Buffy blushed and rolled her eyes, “Angelus had them installed before he got his soul back. They should be strong enough to hold Angel.” “Oh,” Faith answered, “Do you know why he had’em installed?” She shrugged, “We didn’t really discuss it, I think he was going to use them on me once Acathla appeared.” “And you dated this guy?” Faith was staring at her. “Not Angelus, I dated Angel.” Faith shook her head, “Ain’t they the same guy?” “Sort of,” Buffy furrowed her brows, “But not quite.” “Huh?” “Okay, Angel has a soul and is all repent-y for the bad things that Angelus did. Angelus is a very bad, sadistic vampire.” She rocked her head from side to side as she thought. “He’s the kind of vampire that’ll kill your entire family, one at a time, and leave you messages about how and when he’s going to do it. Just to torture you and drive you out of your mind.” Faith looked down at the inert form, “Sounds like a real peach.” She tapped her lips with her finger, “If his guy is such a bad ass, why’d he go down so easy? Like I didn’t hit’em that hard and he still ain’t come to yet.” She warily stretched her foot out and nudged the unconscious vamp. “Think he’s playin’ possum?” “No, we’ve said some things that Angelus wouldn’t be able to resist commenting on. He’s out.” She sighed, “We’ll get him inside and chained up, then figure out what we’re going to do.” She opened the door and held it while Faith picked up Angel and carried him into the room. When Buffy flipped the lights on, Faith could see the manacles on the far wall and headed in that direction. “Whoa!” she stopped and stared down at the floor, “Geez, B, how the hell did you miss that?” She pointed at a large scorch mark in the shape of a curled up body in the middle of the carpet. Buffy stared at the burn mark for a moment, then looked back to the door. After a moment, she spoke quietly, “That’s where I left his ring.” Faith’s head shot up from where she was carrying the vampire, “You were engaged?” “No!” Buffy yelped, “God no!” She took a breath, “It was a family ring he gave me, it wasn’t anything like that at all. Otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it.” “Yeah B,” Faith walked over to the wall. She dropped the vampire at her feet, and pulled one of the manacles toward her. Buffy watched her snap it around his wrist and reach for the other one. The silence in the room was magnified by the clinking of the steel. A loud snap told Buffy the other one was fastened. Faith tugged on the chains to test their strength. “But ya did say ya loved him, so maybe it was a little more serious than yer lettin’ on?” “Yeah, it was serious,” she sighed, “But we were nowhere near that. Not even remotely close.” “But,” Faith dragged it out, “Red wuz already pickin’ out bridesmaid dresses and makin’ suggestions.” Buffy snickered, “It wouldn’t be Willow if she didn’t.” “ ’Kay,” Faith turned to the blond, “I’m gonna go get Red and we’ll get her to do a spell to see if Fang-boy here has a soul.” “We’re going to leave him?” Buffy was looking a Faith. “No, that ain’t what I said,” Faith walked over and rested her hands on Buffy’s shoulders. “I’m gonna get Red and whatever she needs. You’re gonna stay here and watch him.” She pointed her thumb over her shoulder. “If I stay here, if he twitches in his sleep, I’ll stake him.” Buffy was looked up into Faith’s eyes, “Oh.” Her face dropped toward the floor, “What happens if he comes to?” Faith smiled, “You’ll wait till Red ‘n me get back. You want to know, and that’s the only way you will.” She tucked a finger under Buffy’s chin and lifted it. “It’s important and I know, no matter what he says or does, you’ll wait to find out and be sure.” Buffy wrapped her arms around the dark slayer and pulled her in close. Faith’s arms instinctively curled around the blond. “You’re right, I’ll wait.” “Can I get that in writing? Ain’t often anybody says I’m right.” Buffy groaned, “I walked right into that one.” She let go of the brunette and stepped back. “Go get Willow and let’s get this over with.” Faith could feel the pulsing bass from the club as she strode up to the door. “Hey, Ralphie,” she nodded to the doorman. “Just in ‘n out tonight. I gotta get a friend from inside, and blow.” He smiled, “Don’t make me come in and get you.” Faith laughed, “You wish I’d let you get me.” She turned and headed in through the doors. Cordelia was up on the second level with Harmony and the Cordettes. The girls had strolled in together as the ruling class that they were. Cordelia had led them upstairs where they marched to the table with the best view of the lower level. They stood behind three underclassmen that lacked the foresight to know they were sitting at a table that they definitely didn’t belong at. A few pointed barbs later, the girls sat around the vacated table. A couple of the lower echelon went off in search of refreshment, while the rest of the girls settled in. Harmony and the others started critiquing what people were wearing, or the people themselves. Cordelia was barely paying attention to what they were doing. Her eyes restlessly scanned from the door, to the dance floor, to the corner where Xander and Willow were sitting. She realized she was looking for a short blonde and a hot brunette. It was still early, but she was surprised to find she was already watching for them. “Cordelia?” Harmony intruded on her thoughts, “What’s the matter? Are you okay?” “What?” Cordy snapped. Harmony pulled back, “Well, we were wondering, you’ve been fairly quiet since we got here.” She looked nervous, “You keep looking at the table with that Reddenberg girl…” “OOH!” one of the Cordettes yelped, “You’re planning to do something really mean and nasty to her!” “What?” Cordy shook her head. “No, I‘m not planning anything mean.” She glared at Harmony, “And her name is Rosenberg, Willow Rosenberg. We’d all be lucky to have a friend like her.” Harmony looked to the other girls at the table; they quietly nodded and urged her on. “Umm, Cordy?” she hesitated. “We,” she pointed at the rest of the table; “We think maybe you’re spending too much time with those…” she nibbled on her bottom lip. Cordelia was glaring at the whole table. Her body was tense, her arms crossed over her chest clenching her biceps. “Those people...” Harmony’s voice trailed away to silence. “I see,” Cordelia’s tone froze them to their chairs. “And what led to this great revelation? You didn’t hurt yourselves thinking about this did you?” “N-no,” Harmony stuttered, “It’s just that, we, we’ve noticed…” Cordelia stared at her, time ticking slowly past, “Spit it out Harmony, I want to hear what you have to say before I start collecting Social Security.” Harmony clasped her hands together to hide the shaking. “We…” her eyes darted around the table again, “We noticed that you’ve been spending time with them, and you haven’t really been seen with any of the more, umm, more eligible? No, more desirable, yeah, that’s the word. Any of the more desirable guys at school.” The rest of the table nodded as they watched events unfold. Harmony blinked a few times before continuing. “We’re sorta worried; cuz if you spend too much time with them, then maybe you’ll damage your reputation.” Cordelia snorted, “My reputation? You expect me to believe you’re worried about my reputation?” Harmony smiled, “Wow, I’m so glad you understand I was worried about how you would take this.” “Shut up Harmony.” Cordelia was glaring at the table. “You need to find out what the word sarcasm means. You’re not worried about me. You think that if I lose my position, you’ll all go down with me.” A couple of the girls started to nod until Cordelia pinned them with a glare. “Let me set you straight.” She looked at each girl in turn, “The only one in that school that decides who’s who, and what’s important, is me. I’m the one that puts everyone into their place.” She stared at Harmony, “You would do well to remember that.” “But Cordelia,” Harmony was starting to whine, “Aren’t you afraid of what everyone will think? That you’re just, just, common?” “Harmony, there is nothing common about me. And there never will be.” A small cold smile crept across her face, “I am Cordelia Chase. It doesn’t matter what other people think. Nobody will ever accuse me of being common.” “Oh,” Harmony’s head dropped. “What about the rest of us?” Cordelia sighed, she reached over and tilted Harmony’s head back up. “You have to make your own way. You shouldn’t worry about what other people think, you need to do what’s right for yourself.” “I don’t understand, won’t that make us just like everybody else?” Harmony asked. Cordelia smiled, “No, Harm, That’s what will make you stand out from everyone else.” She suddenly turned away from Harmony, and looked toward the entrance. A slight, warm, tingling in her lower back started to climb her spine and spread through her body. Her eyes widened as she realized what the tingle meant. “They’re here,” she whispered. “What did you say?” Harmony asked. “I didn’t hear that last part.” “Nothing,” Cordelia stood, she rested her hand on the blond’s shoulder, “Think about what I said, I’ll be back in a bit.” Harmony watched her walk away. “Well?” one of the other girls asked. Harmony blinked, and focused on the girls staring at her. ‘She’s right,’ she thought to herself, ‘I don’t want to be like that anymore.’ She stood, “Everything’s fine, I’m going dancing.” She followed Cordelia’s path to the stairs. Cordelia stopped on the stairs and looked at the sea of bodies on the dance floor. ‘How am I going to find them in this?’ She closed her eyes and concentrated, turning slightly she opened her eyes. She smiled when she recognized the top of Faith’s head making its way through the crowd, ‘Huh, didn’t think that would work.’ She stepped off the stairs and followed the other brunette. Faith gracefully moved through the seething crowd, never really coming into contact with any of the gyrating bodies. She cleared the crowd and headed to the couch with Willow and Xander. The two looked up at her and then each moved their head to look behind her. “Where’s Buffy?” They both asked. Faith barked out a laugh and shook her head, “Figures,” she sighed. A small smile graced her face, “Queen C,” she said without turning her head. Willow and Xander looked perplexed for a moment until Cordelia appeared next to the slayer. “How did you do that?” Xander pushed himself back into the couch, trying to put more space between him and his sworn enemy. Willow blinked and furrowed her brow in thought. “Where’s your other half?” Cordelia asked quietly. Faith smirked, “How come nobody ever wants to see just me?” “You two have been attached at the hip for the last week, so pardon us for asking where she is.” Cordelia sneered. Faith rubbed the back of her neck, “Yeah, you’re right.” She looked at the three of them in turn, “My apologies.” The silence hung heavily for a moment, “Well that’s definitely more than I expected,” Cordelia said brightly, “But it still doesn’t answer the question.” Faith dropped her gaze to the floor, “Right,” she muttered, “About that,” she sighed. She looked up, “Sorry to cut your night short Red, but I need ya to do a soul spell.” “A what?” three voices questioned. “A spell ta see if someone’s got a soul or not. B said you could do it. Can ya? Or do I gotta go get G-man?” Faith tilted her head to the side, “Kinda figgered you’d catch that, Red.” “Why do you need a soul spell?” Willow squeaked. Xander’s head moved back and forth between the two girls, his eyes wide. “Is Buffy okay?” Cordelia whispered. “OhGODshe’sbeenturned!” Xander squealed, pulling himself into a ball on the couch. Willow turned white and started to shake. “What the hell are ya talkin’ about?” Faith quickly shook her head. “She’s fine, it’s for Angel. He’s back.” Cordelia’s eyes widened, “He’s back? I thought she killed him?” “So’d she.” Faith sighed. “She said that whatever spell Red did, worked. She had to stick ‘em anyways cuz the portal was openin’.” Faith shrugged, and turned back to Willow, “Can ya do the spell Red?” Willow blinked, and then blinked again. Slowly her eyes came up to meet Faith’s, she blinked again, “It-it worked?” Faith nodded, “Yeah, it worked. Question is can ya tell if he’s still got it or not?” “Angel’s back?” Xander finally caught up to the rest of the conversation. “Back, as in back here?” He looked over his shoulder as if he expected to see the vampire behind him. He whipped his head back around to Faith, “You mean, back, as here in Sunnydale, back?” Faith rolled her eyes, “Yeah, what’s the big deal?” “Don’t!” Cordelia yelled at Xander as he started to open his mouth. “We don’t have time for that story, some other time.” She snapped her fingers at Willow, “Can you do the spell?” she waited a second, “Yes or no Willow, we need an answer now.” “Uh, yeah, yeah, I can,” She blinked, “I-I’ll have to stop at Giles and pick up some things.” She dropped off into silence for a moment, her gaze came back up to meet Faith’s. There was more confidence in her look, “I can do this.” “How did you get here?” Cordelia turned to Faith. “Jogged.” “Fine,” Cordelia huffed, “I’ll drive.” She turned to Willow and Xander, “Either one of you makes a mess of my car, I’ll kill you.” Faith laughed, “Thanks C, knew we kept ya around for more’n just your good looks.” Willow and Xander stood as Faith and Cordelia turned to go. “C,” Faith looked at the dance floor and pointed, “Ain’t that a friend of yours?” Cordelia looked in the direction the slayer had indicated. She saw Harmony dancing with a well dressed man in his mid twenties. “That’s Harmony…” her voice trailed off at the look the slayer had on her face. Her shoulders sagged, “This isn’t good, is it?” She sighed, “Your Vamp radar went off.” Faith nodded, “You care about her?” she growled. Cordelia could feel the power coming off the girl, anger, rage, her eyes had turned black. She just nodded. “Right,” Faith didn’t move, “You get her away from him,” she looked at the cheerleader, “I’ll meet ya outside in about 5 minutes.” Cordelia’s mask dropped into place. She pasted a fake smile on and headed toward her friend. “Harmony,” she grabbed her arm, “I’ve been looking all over for you.” She smiled at the young man. She started to pull the blond away, “Come on Harm, we need to go powder our noses.” Harmony dug her heels in, “What are you talking about?” she huffed. “I’m dancing here, I don’t need to leave.” Cordelia glared at her, “Trust me Harmony, right now? You need to go.” The man Harmony had been dancing with grabbed Cordelia’s arm, “Let her go, bitch, she’s with me.” Cordelia looked down at his cold hand on her arm before bringing her rage filled gaze to his dead eyes, “Take your hands off of me before you get hurt.” He laughed, Cordelia could see the slightly elongated canines in his mouth. “Ooh,” he chortled, “Are you going to make me?” Cordelia winced as he gripped tightened his grip. “No,” a gravelly voice said into his ear, “But, I’m gonna rip it off if ya don’t.” His head snapped around to see Faith standing right behind him. “Trick’s lookin’ for ya, let’s go.” She turned away from him. Looking over her shoulder, “Well?” she asked. “Uh, yeah,” he turned to the other two girls, “I’ll see you later,” he spat. “Let’s go,” he said as he started to follow Faith out of the club. “See ya, Ralphie,” Faith muttered as she walked past the bouncer. Her mind was racing s she led the vamp away from the club. She was surprised when he responded to her statement about Trick, and was furiously trying to come up with a plan to use it to her advantage. “Hey,” the vamp called, “Wait a sec,” he had a puzzled look on his face. “Do I know you?” Faith snorted and glanced up and down the street. She saw an entrance to an alley, and she knew there was a dumpster just past the opening. “Not here,” she growled and pulled him toward the alley. She walked past the dumpster and pushed him against the wall, standing in front of him so they were out of sight. “What?” she barked. He looked down the litter filled dead end, an uneasy feeling coming over him. “I don’t recognize you, how do you know Trick?” Faith just stared at him, her hand slowly reaching for her stake. “You work for him?” he continued. Faith’s hand stopped, “No, I work for the Mayor.” “You do?” he scratched his head, “I still don’t recall seeing you around.” He squinted at her, trying to see if that made her look any more familiar. Faith rolled her eyes, “Idiot,” she sighed, “I’m undercover. Ya think the Mayor’s gonna have everybody that does his dirty work hangin’ around the office?” “Oh,” he shrugged, “I guess that makes sense.” He paused for a moment, “Does Trick want us to kill that Wurth guy now? That’s why they sent you? I didn’t think I had to do that ‘til next week.” Faith blinked, “No, that’s not it. Why’d they want ya ta kill him anyways? The Boss didn’t explain that to me.” “I think he’s some kinda professor and knows something about what kind of demon the mayor will be after his ascension.” The vamp replied. He looked around again, something wasn’t quite right. “I can see why they don’t want him around,” Faith growled. “While we’re standin’ here getting’ all chummy and shit, I got a question.” She glanced up and down the alley, “When does Kakistos get in?” “Trick said he gets here Tuesday night. Why?” “They told me he was comin’ in, but not when. He bringin’ that Box of Gavrock with him?” she prodded. “Yeah,” he replied. “The Mayor needs it before his Ascension. It’s got something to do with his conversion.” ‘They didn’t tell me that,” Faith shrugged. “Wadda ya mean by conversion? He changin’ religions or somethin’?” “No,” he answered, “You seem to be asking a lot of questions. If you work for the Mayor, shouldn’t you know all this already?” “I do what I’m s’posed to,” Faith snapped. “Cuz I don’t spend a lotta time in the office, they don’t tell me all o’ their plans.” She looked up the alley again, “’Sides, I’m worried about what’ll happen when all this shit goes down.” “Wait a sec,” something was bothering him. “Mr. Trick said we’d get to turn all the people the Mayor wanted to keep after he ascended.” He stared at the slayer, “They’re all supposed to know what’s going on…” He slipped into game face, “You’ve made a big mistake little girl, now you’re going to die.” He grabbed for the brunette with a snarl. Faith’s fist hammered into his nose, splattering it over his face. Her knee drove up into his groin folding him over. She stepped aside and brought her fist up from underneath unfolding him and slamming his head into the wall behind him. She growled as she punched him again and again, not stopping as he slid to the ground. “I’m not the one who fucked up,” her hand whipped a stake out from behind her and pushed it into his chest. “I’ll say ‘Hi’ to the Mayor for ya.” The vamp tried to laugh, but only managed to cough slightly, blood trickling from his mouth. “Good luck with that,” he gurgled, “You can’t kill him.” “We’ll see about that.” With a sharp thrust he turned to dust. She stood and slipped the stake back into her waistband. ‘That worked out okay,’ she thought as she dusted herself off. ‘Got a lot more info than we had before, and Trick’s down one more.’ She smiled and walked out of the alley, looking for her friends. Spotting Cordelia standing over by the entrance to the club, she jogged toward them. “Sorry,” she said as she approached the group, “Had some business to take care of.” A small smile flitted across Cordelia’s face, “Thanks for getting rid of him, Faith. Harmony isn’t that sharp, but she didn’t deserve that either.” Faith nodded, “Apparently it’s my job.” She smiled, “Or so G-man keeps yappin’ about it bein’ that way.” They started to walk toward where Cordelia had parked. “I got some info before I dusted him.” “What was it?” Xander asked. “Did he say Angelus was back?” “Nah,” she shook her head, “It’s about the Mayor and his ascension.” “Is it bad?” Willow spoke up. “It’s bad isn’t it? That’s why you’re so quiet. We’re not going to be able to stop them, there’s thousands of them and they’re all powerful witches as well as vampires and they’re hunting us down as we walk toward our imminent doom…” Her voice trailed off when she realized the group had stopped and were all staring at her. “What?” she blushed, “So I’ve given it some thought.” Faith snorted, “That’s way past givin’ it some thought.” She looked at the witch with a sad look, “You don’t believe we can beat this?” Her voice had dropped. Willow’s eyes widened as she realized what she sounded like. “N-no, Faith,” her head was rapidly moving back and forth, “I know we’re going to win. It’s just sometimes it sneaks up on me and I get carried away.” She reached out and lightly touched the dark slayer on the arm. “With you and Buffy leading us, those baddies have no idea how much trouble they’re in.” “Nice recovery, Willow,” Cordelia pulled her keys out of her purse and hit the button to unlock her car. “It almost sounded convincing.” Willow paled and her mouth dropped open, her hands started to flap back and forth. “It’s ok, Red,” Faith patted her on the shoulder before opening the door. “There’s days when I have my doubts too.” “Really?” Cordelia said from across the car, “You certainly don’t show it.” Faith shrugged as Xander and Willow got into the back seat, “Sometimes I’m like a duck.” The brunette furrowed her brow, “A duck?” “Yeah,” Faith smirked, “All kindsa calm on the surface, but paddlin’ like fuck underneath.” Faith enjoyed the sound of Cordelia’s laugh. “You’re right,” the cheerleader was smiling, “Now get in, we have to go.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
