Good Friends
Xander knew what he wanted; a girlfriend.
And not Cordelia, not this time around. He’d been down that road and all things considered it would be better to stay away from that hornets’ nest. That had been a case of passion not love and no amount of fumbling in the janitor closet could make up for the heartache. This time he was going to let his head decide, date someone he could actually stand to be with.
The top of that list, once he acknowledged that Anya wasn’t an option, was Willow and they had had their fling back in the day but he had really gotten use to thinking of her as gay. After that he didn’t really know that many girls, not really, not well. He guessed Jesse was now a girl but it had been seven years since he had spent any time with him and that was back when she was still a him. There had also been a mummy that had been into him but the whole soul sucking thing might get in the way. That basically left Buffy.
It was not that he was settling for her he’d just given up on having a shot with her years ago. This time it could be different; Angel wouldn’t get in the way, assuming knowledge of his future betrayal had poisoned the well for the vamp, and he had been the only real competition. Knowing what he now knew Xander might stand a chance. If he could just get her past feeling weird about how he knew it. Maybe if he could show her it was a good thing, shut things down before they became a problem. Mmm, there’s an idea just let him check to see if the right challenge was available…
***
“Hey, Wil.” Xander caught up with his redheaded friend between classes. “So Buffy and Giles talked to you about the, uh…”
“Vampires? Yeah, that’s weird. If I hadn’t been there last night I wouldn’t believe it. I’m still not sure that I believe it.”
“Oh they’re real.” That was quiet, said mostly to himself before he spoke up. “That’s made me wonder if there might not be other things going on like, do you think Amy’s been acting weird? You know her better than I do.”
“No, I mean… You don’t think she’s a vampire do you?” Her eyes widened in actual concern.
“She has been coming to school right? And school takes place in the day so I think we can rule out vampire.”
“Right. I should have thought of that.”
“I was thinking that if you would check on Jesse this afternoon, I’m sure at least one teacher asked you to take her her homework-”
“I volunteered.”
“-I would ask Giles about Amy. He wanted to wave a crystal or something at me anyway.”
***
“The Master, not my master, not that I have a master, it’s just what they call him.” Xander tried to focus on what he was saying while the librarian walked around him swing a crystal like a pendulum. “He’s the big bad at the moment; he’s a vampire, Angel’s grandsire or some such, who tried to open the Hellmouth over there,” he pointed towards the tables that his chair was normally with, “but he got stuck.”
“The Hellmouth is under the library?”
“Yeah, that was almost convenient a few times. Anyway the Master is going to try to escape first by using that big guy I was talking about to sort of remote feed; I don’t know when that will happen,” actually if he understood how things worked right it wouldn’t happen until he activated that challenge, “but we didn’t have a problem stopping that last time. Later on he was a little more successful invoking a prophecy to open the Hellmouth by, ah, killing you Buffy.”
“I died?” She was starting to believe him as every one of the Watcher’s tests showed that he was human.
“Only for a little bit, CPR is great, but it was long enough to fulfill the prophecy and activate a second Slayer; we had two of them running around for a few years.” Then there were a hell of lot more. “I don’t think we should let it get that far, I don’t want your rescue to be one of the things changed, but I don’t know the way to his lair.”
“Then we just wait?”
“No we search, we plan.” Giles put away the crystal as he ran out of tests to run on him.
“We help people? There’s a witch and- Amy Madison is student here, a friend of Willow’s, and her mother has taken over her body so she can relive high school. Last time we didn’t figure it out until she started killing people so she could be a cheerleader. If we, well Giles, were to cast a reversal spell now we would avoid a lot of death. Though Mrs. Madison also tried to kill Buffy until a backlash took her out.”
“There is no danger in a reversal spell; if he’s wrong and there is no spell to reverse nothing will happen.” Giles then looked at Buffy. “And if he’s right you might want to be on hand near Mrs. Madison with some sort of binder so that she can’t cause more trouble.”
“What do I do?” Xander stood happy that things were starting to get moving.
“What did you do last time?”
“Ah,” what had he done? “Nothing.”
“Then consider your warning good enough; if it worked before there is no reason to think it won’t work this time.”
“I guess you’re right.” Xander really didn’t know enough about magic to be much help against a witch, nor was he willing to dump points into it, so it was best to just keep his distance, let those that knew take care of things. His only real worry was whether or not it would count as him completing the challenge.
He also had to worry about what he was going to do while waiting for them to finish, which might take a while as Giles had to go shopping for spell components. He couldn’t start another challenge until this body swap one was done and he’d just given up control of it. If this trusting others thing was going to become a habit he was either going to have to try to find some sort of multitasking trait or unlock another scenario to kill time in. Since he was free he might as well check on Jesse.
This would be the first time Xander saw her since he accidentally turned Jesse and a third of all men into women but there was something comforting in what hadn’t changed; it was the same house, on the same street, and the same ugly pink couch in the living room. Even Jesse’s bedroom was mostly the same mess only were there use to pictures of bikini girls pinned to the wall there were now shirtless firefighters. This was a decent enough reflection of how Jesse had changed. She was still tall, taller than Xander, and thin with her black hair just long enough to start to curl and cover her eyes, but where t-shirts use to hang loosely from his shoulder they were now pushed out by the swell of her breasts.
“Xan-man, what are you doing here?” She pushed the textbooks that Willow must have brought over off the bed to make room. “Sit down.”
“Yeah, I just wanted to check on you, make sure you’re okay after last night.”
“Last night, that was weird. Kind of hard to believe it was real even with.” Her hand went to the bandage on her long neck before shifting closer to him.
“Yeah it takes a little bit to get use to; when you’re feeling better, back at school, you can meet Giles. But ah-” Jesse shifted again so that her leg was pressed against his making Xander pause. It use to be endearing how Jesse never let rejection get him down going back to talk to the same girls the next day but it wasn’t like he went around touching people or hitting on his friends. Or did he? Did he use to touch Willow in this very intentional way or could Jesse get away with more now that she was a girl? “I could answer some questions if you have any?”
She did but they were pretty basic, what from the legends worked and what didn’t, so Xander had no trouble with them. What did stump him though was why being bit didn’t hurt. He knew that was true, that there were people who sought out the pleasure, but he didn’t know why. He also knew he didn’t like how excited Jesse seemed to get, her nipples poking through the thin material of her top, when he said that. Was he going to have to worry about her sneaking off to a bite den along with the awkward come-ons?
Xander tried to impart just how dangerous vampires were before he left but he didn’t think it was enough finding himself worrying about what she would do once she had the strength to go out when he got home. As soon as he got through his door there was what could only be described as a ping inside his head drawing his attention to the challenges menu. That ping must be the universe’s way of telling him that Buffy and Giles had done it, had freed Amy, without him being there to see it for himself. The phone ringing less than a minute later, after he had collected the point from the completed challenge, must be them trying to tell him themselves.
“Hello.”
“Xander you’ve got to help!” That wasn’t Buffy.
“Who is this?”
“This is Gwen; Blue said you would help and we need it. Katie and I were on a date with a guy at the old skating rink, he likes blondes, and you need to come quick.”
“Sure jus-” And she hung up leaving him with a dial tone. “How am I supposed to get there?”
