Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Chapter Four
“Angel what is going on? What has happened in Sunnydale? And I want an answer instead of you growling at me and telling me ‘Not now, Cordy’.” Angel stood up from his desk and ignoring the young woman who meant well, walked out into the foyer. Gunn was sitting on one of the couches polishing his hubcap axe while Wesley bustled around making tea. They both knew their boss well enough to know that he would tell them the problem in his own time and no amount of nagging would hurry him.
“Wesley, I need you out here, I have some bad news and I will need all your support.”
“What’s up man?” Gunn asked discarding his axe for the moment.
“Yes Angel, is everything okay with Xander and Spike?” Wesley asked sitting himself down near to Gunn.
Angel stood there for a moment attempting to figure out a way to tell them everything he had learnt in the last half an hour. “A new enemy has made itself known in Sunnydale but this time they haven’t been able to find anything about this mystery woman who is super strong. However that isn’t the worst part. Buffy went up against this thing earlier today and… oh god, I can’t…She…,” Tears were running down Angel’s face and Wesley had a moment of clarity.
“Oh, Angel. I take Miss Summers passed away?” Wesley asked ignoring Cordelia’s gasp while Gunn looked between one and another of them confused.
“Yes she did but she’s not the only one. I’m sorry but Giles died as well and they assume that Buffy’s boyfriend Riley is also dead.”
“Giles is gone?” Cordelia asked falling onto the floor because her legs could not hold her up. Gunn slid off his seat and pulled her into a hug, he viewed Cordelia as a sister and he wished there was something he could do. He watched English because during their discussions over a drink he has learnt how much Wesley has always looked up to the older watcher.
“Yes. I’m sorry but we have two cars of fleeing Scoobies making their way here and the first car of Anya, Tara and Dawn doesn’t know about Giles and Riley. The second car is under attack as we speak, not by this super strong woman called Glory but by some strange human knights on horses.
“Are your lovers okay?” Gunn asked as the other two were still processing the information given. Gunn doesn’t have a problem with Angel having male lovers as he has been secretly lusting after Wesley for quite a while.
“Xander has an arrow through his arm, Joyce Summers has been in hospital and by rights should still be there, and as for Spike... Wesley have you heard of Vampire Mooghey?” Wesley finally paid attention and suppressed his feelings for the moment. Angel needed him.
“Mooghey? It’s a myth. The vampire in a very dire situation can cut themselves off from any pain that they feel in order to complete the task but it involves complete and utter concentration and apparently this cutting off does not actually get rid of the pain; the vampire will have to go through it at some point and the longer they put this off, the more the pain builds up. If they put it off for too long it can actually dust the vampire; that is if you believe the stories.” Gunn admired how Wesley became an encyclopaedia when asked about something demon-y.
“Everything you just said is true. These knights are human and they have created a human barricade in the middle of the freeway. Spike’s driving.”
“The chip?” Cordelia exclaimed. She didn’t like Spike on principle; anyone who hit your ex over the head with a microscope and ordered hot pokers to be speared into your boss was bad news. However as both Angel and Xander seem to have gotten over it to the point of sleeping with him she supposed she could seem to be tolerant of him.
“Yes the chip will go off but Spike is planning on suppressing the pain long enough to drive them here. Hopefully he will be able to survive the pain when they arrive. Now we need to get a few things done first. Cordelia, I need you to ring David Nabbit, you seem to have influence on him and I need a favour.” Cordelia wiped her eyes with a tissue Gunn passed to her as she stood. The only way they would all get through this is if they supported each other and so she would do her part.
“What do you need, Angel?” She asked relieved that her voice didn’t come out as a squeak.
“I need,” he paused and sighed before continuing forcing the painful words out. “I need him to collect Buffy’s, Giles’s and even Riley’s bodies. That, however, is not as easy as it sounds. We can’t let this Glory trace us through looking at the mortuaries records. He is going to have to use every trick he knows to make sure this cannot be traced back to him. They need to be delivered to Lazinie and Sons, remember the half Bracchen demons we helped last month? I’m sure we still have there number on record. They will be discreet which is what we need; the demon community can’t know the Slayer is dead, not yet anyway.” Wesley walked over to the vampire and motioned for him to sit down.
“Angel, stop. You need to slow down.” Angel shook his head at the words and tried to stand up again.
“No Wes. I can’t. Not until they are all here safe and sound. Not until I’m sandwiched between Xander and Spike where I know they are fine instead of running for their lives.” Angel felt older than his two hundred plus years and he prayed to anything out there that the second carload of Scoobies would arrive safely without further incident.
“Leave him Wes. Don’t worry Angel, I’ll go get this done now and you’ll soon be having loud obnoxious sex in your room while I take all your credit cards to the mall, cos there is no way I’m staying here when that is going on.” Cordelia left the foyer and headed for the phone while Angel continued his instructions.
“Gunn I need you to set up traps all over the hotel like you had at your old sanctuary. Just make sure we won’t trip them accidentally but put them in places where anyone evading the hotel would end up with a nasty shock.” Angel watched Gunn nod and immediately turned to Wesley, he had to keep moving.
“Let me guess, research?” Wesley asked dryly.
“Yeah, I don’t know what books they concentrated on in Sunnydale but they didn’t have the name Glory, so try to find a reference to that, especially if medieval knights are mentioned as we have no idea how they fit in yet. While you’re at it any protection spell or ritual you could find would be greatly appreciated.” Angel was glad that Wesley was there, no one was smarter when it came to the ancient demonic texts than Wesley.
“I will see what I can come up with. What are you going to do?” Wesley asked.
“I need to see the Host about finding a discrete doctor; we are going to need it.” Angel turned to sweep out the door but Wesley grabbed his arm and squeezed.
“They’ll be alright.”
“They had better be.” Was Angel’s answer, leaving no doubt in Wesley’s mind that if something happened to his lovers, Angel would be on a rampage.

Angel walked past the detectors and bouncers into Caritas. A quick glance around showed that the club was moderately busy and the Host was talking to a slime orange coloured demon in the corner, while an attractive girl was singing Killing Heidi. She appeared human except for the purple tail that was wrapped around the hand holding the microphone. Angel caught the Host’s eye and then turned to slouch near the bar knowing that the green skinned demon would be over as soon as he could so all Angel could do now was wait. He pulled out his phone and just looked at it maybe he should ring Xander’s phone and see how they were fairing, but no, he couldn’t do that, it might distract Spike. Anyway, they had enough on their plate without talking to him as well. How he wished he were with them to protect them and keep them safe. They should have had some warning, damn it!
“Angel-cakes are you in there?” The enquiring voice broke through Angel’s brooding thoughts and he turned to stare at the garishly dressed demon beside him.
“Sorry. Look I need some help but I can’t risk someone overhearing our conversation or even being able to read my aura through singing like you do. Is there somewhere we can go to talk in private, this is extremely important?” Angel asked getting straight down to business.
“Hello to you to gorgeous. And I can tell it’s important your body language is screaming wasp nest about to attack. Usually I don’t offer this until I’ve had a sinful amount of Sea-breezes but my bedroom is just over there.” He turned and led the way to the double doors at the other end of the club, after punching in a pin code he let them in and closed the door behind silencing the noise from the karaoke bar. Before he could turn to his guest and ask what the problem was Angel had started murdering ‘Mandy’. After a couple of lines the Host couldn’t take it anymore and he had enough of a glimpse at the tortured soul standing in front of him with pain filled eyes.
“Okay Angel that’s enough I can see what you need.” As he talked he moved over to a dresser and grabbed a pad and pen. “Go to this address, a Dr Phillips should be able to help you. He isn’t entirely human but he is discrete and for a fee he could stay at the hotel to care for your lady’s mother as well as deal with any other problems that crop up. Don’t worry too much, your boys will make it out of this but all of you will have some trials ahead.”
“Thankyou, but you can’t breathe a word of this to anyone.” Angel forced his tongue to move, grateful for having such a great contact in the Host.
“I know. Don’t worry muffin, nobody will hear about the Slayer’s downfall from me. Now you’d better go, you’ll want to be home by the time your boys arrive.” Angel nodded again and then turned and left without a word, hoping this Doctor Phillips would be able to help.

Joyce closed the phone as Spike sped up towards the living barricade in front of them.
“Hold onto something.” Xander called out while Spike wondered if they were going to live through this. If he would ever see his Sire again, if he would ever kiss Xander again. Spears and arrows were flying thick and fast over the car and they were bloody lucky that none had smashed through the window and killed them instantly. In the next instant they hit the horses dead on and Spike gritted his teeth erecting his mental blockades to keep the pain at bay for now hoping that he could hold them until they were all safe with Angel. He held the car steady as it bounced over the carcasses and the occupants tried to ignore the screams that ripped through the air wishing that this nightmare would be over soon. Then they were through the other side and the car took off leaving the knights behind with Spike at the wheel praying that they could reach help before he succumbed to the pain that was already eating away at his mental barricades.

Angel opened the main doors of the Hyperion for his guest. The pink-haired red-eyed doctor had been amicable enough to the idea of staying at the hotel for a while after Angel had promised a serious sum of money out of one of his numerous bank accounts acquired when Angelus was at the prime of his reign in Europe. Angel usually tried to avoid using the money as he always felt incredible guilt over the thought of the ill gotten gains, but when it was Joyce Summers, not to mention the fact that Xander’s arm would need a doctors attention, he was willing to use it. Cordelia rushed out of the offices to meet them a worried frown upon her face.
“Angel we have a problem.” She started causing Angel to groan, that’s all they needed more problems. “Well it’s not so much a problem as a complication. I rang David as you said and he rang me back just before. He was able to find Buffy and Giles but Riley…Riley’s alive.” Angel’s eyes widened at the news, from what Spike told him before it had seemed unlikely that he would’ve survived.
“He’s alive. That’s great news.” Angel exclaimed thinking of how that piece of information would cheer his lovers up slightly.
“No Angel, it isn’t really.” Angel’s confusion must have showed on his face as Cordelia quickly continued. “He is in the psychiatric ward. Angel, whatever this Glory did to him, it made him insane.” Angel reeled back as if physically punched. What type of beast or demon could turn a seasoned military officer insane in less than an hour?
“Angel. Angel!” Angel became aware of someone calling his name and looked up into the sad blue eyes belonging to Wesley. Angel shook his head to clear it of his disturbing thoughts before addressing the people in front of him.
“Sorry Wesley. Have you found anything?”
“Not as yet but hopefully adding that this Glory can create craziness in normally sane people might help narrow the search. You also have some guests. Dawn, Tara and Anya are presently finding bedrooms but they don’t yet know about Riley and Giles. We thought it best if you talked to them as you’re the boss.”
“Okay, tell them to come to my office. I think I need a drink before I tell them. Wesley this is Dr Phillips, he will be looking after Joyce as well as looking after any other medical emergency we will inevitably have. Make him feel comfortable and give him anything he needs.” Wesley gestured the doctor to follow him while Cordelia went and found the first wave of Sunnydale refugees. Angel stormed into his office and quickly retrieved his good whiskey from his hiding place.

Spike slammed the car round the corner and heard the tires screech. Luckily a police car hadn’t seen them so far or they would all be in a world of trouble. Spike could see the hotel looming up in front of them but he wasn’t sure if he could make it; holding the pain at bay was becoming increasingly difficult per second. Xander in the passenger seat was becoming increasingly worried about his lover whose already pale complexion was considerably paler and was biting his lip in concentration and didn’t even notice he was doing it. Xander glanced down at his arm again, trying not to throw up at the sight of the arrow sticking straight through. He was feeling a bit dizzy now due to the blood loss and knew that he needed to see a doctor quickly. However, how on earth were they going to explain this one? The car sped into the Hyperion’s underground car park and came to an abrupt stop. Spike immediately opened his door and promptly fell out, a moment later a shrill scream cut the air and didn’t stop. Xander was vaguely aware of Willow helping Joyce out but he was more concerned about his lover. Xander scooted across the front seat until he fell out the car and landed next to Spike. Spike convulsed on the ground both hands clutching at his head and mouth open in a now silent scream. Xander held him close and started rocking, suddenly scared he was about to pass out. Suddenly Angel was there holding them both close and Xander knew that they were finally safe and together.
