Emma: Thanks a lot for your review. I'm glad you like the pairing
as it isn't the most common one. By the way, I also heeded your
suggestion and read Soul Stealers: I like it, although I'm not much
of a het fan.

Chapter 4 – Clarity
Jealous. He was jealous
of the fact, that Gunn rather went out to help Anne, instead of
researching with them. It was such a stupid thing to be actually.
Anne needed help and they were there to help people after all.
But ever since that
kiss, Wesley couldn't think of anything else. He spend hours sitting
around at the office, staring at his books and pretending to work.
Gunn hadn't acknowledged the kiss at all. The next day he came to the
office, acting absolutely normal. Probably Gunn didn't even remember
the kiss.
Yet there was still a
strange kind of tension between them, that they did their best to
ignore. Wesley tried to focus back on his book, but he had already
read the page three times, without really paying attention to the
words. He had to get himself together. A small girl needed their help
and he couldn't let his personal problems get in the way.
“What the hell is up with you
and Gunn lately?”
“What?”
“Oh, you know, there is this
weird tension between the two of you.”
Damn it. Cordy had
caught on the tension, that was still hanging unresolved between
them. How was he going to explain that to Cordy? He couldn't just say
something like 'I have the hots for Gunn, but he isn't interested.'.
That would go over well.
“You know you can tell me. I
already know, that you have to figure out this alpha-male crap
between the two of you since Angel's gone, but...”
“Huh?” What the hell is
Cordy talking about? Alpha-male crap?
“Oh, you know Angel always was
the leader and now the two of you need to figure out, who's about to
take his position, but maybe you could just talk about it.”
Wesley could have
laughed out loud. She had no idea, what was really going on. Her
theory was a completely stupid one, but if going with it got Cordelia
out of his hair, he would do so. “Um, you're right. But we will
sort that out...um...soon...”
Ring Ring
“I'll go get it.”
Cordelia got up and went to the phone, while Wesley once again tried
to concentrate on the book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wesley looked ghostly
pale lying in his hospital bed. The machines that surrounded his bed
were beeping faintly, disturbing the quiet of the room. If not for
the tubes sticking out of his nose, one wouldn't believe, that he had
almost bled to death just a few hours before. Glancing over at Cordy,
Gunn noted that she looked dead on her feet. He felt tired himself,
since the adrenaline had worn off.
“Go home, Cordy.”
“What about you. You look
tired.”
“No. I'm good. I can sleep
here.”
Yawning widely, she
nodded her agreement. “Okay.” Cordelia stepped up to Wes'
bed, smoothing his hair away from his forehead. Then she turned
around and with a quick 'Good bye' left the hospital room.
Slumping back into his
chair, Gunn rubbed his eyes, but he wasn't able to sleep. Whenever he
dozed off, he quickly jerked awake, afraid that something had
happened to Wes. Gunn knew that it was a stupid irrational fear, but
he had come far to close to loosing Wes for his own liking.
Loosing him without
ever having, told him how he feels about him. His feelings hadn't
been really clear before, there had been physical attraction and
something else. But Gunn hadn't classified it as love. That had
changed now. The thought of loosing Wesley was really painful to him.
It had been a long time, since he had last felt about anybody like
this.
Gunn must have dozed
off for a short while, because when he looked at Wesley the next
time, his eyes were open. Reaching out, he took one of Wes' hands in
his own. He squeezed firmly and felt Wesley return the squeeze,
although his was a lot weaker, than his own. It was now or never.
Gathering his courage, Gunn brought his chair closer to Wes' side.
He was unsure, how he
should go about it. Zombies, vampires, demons, he could face all of
that. But talking about his own feelings was something Gunn wasn't
comfortable with. Looking down, he absently stroked Wes' hand with
his thumb, while gathering his thoughts. If he went wrong about this,
their friendship would be ruined. Or at least seriously dented. He
doubted, that Wes' would hate him for it, but a rejection would hurt
even if it was formulated nicely.
“Hey Wes.”, he finally
managed to speak.
“Hey.” Wes' voice was
small and slightly slurred. Obviously the pain medication was still
affecting him.
“I'm glad you're okay. I...I
need to tell you something.”
Wesley didn't answer,
but nodded instead, urging him to go ahead. Taking a deep breath,
Gunn started talking again.
“Today I thought I'd lost you.
When you took that bullet, trying to protect me, that was just so...”
Wesley squeezed his hand more firmly this time, so he continued: “I
just never expected that. It made some things clearer, that I had
been thinking about for a while. “
Damn. He sounded like a
stuttering teenage girl. The way this was currently going, he would
never get it right. “It's great to have you as an friend. I
never thought, that I'd be friends with somebody like you. But it's
cool.”
His hand was squeezed
again and a smile spread over Wesley's face.
Feeling encouraged by
that, Gunn continued to speak. He figured, that the best way to do
this was probably to bluntly say what he thought. “Look, Wes,
you are a great guy. I meant it when I kissed you after the party. I
think I've fallen in love with you.”
It felt unbelievably
good, to finally say the words. Relieving. Now he could only hope for
Wesley's reaction. Looking down at the floor, he waited for the
Englishman to speak. The moment seemed to stretch into eternity,
before Wesley finally started to speak.
“Gunn, I...” Oh, god
what was he supposed to say now? Gunn was in love with him, he had
just said, that he was in love with him. Wesley was currently caught
in a moment of complete shock. Gunn returned his feelings, although
he hadn't figured out for himself, if what he felt was really love.
While he was still struggling for the right words, Gunn suddenly got
up and left.
The closing of the door
was unbelievably loud in the silence of his hospital room. Hearing
the door click shut, somehow felt more painful than being shot.
Everything was suddenly clear. He had fucked it up completely. Gunn
had told him, that he was in love with him and he had just said
nothing. He'd let the chance to get the one thing he really wanted
slip, because of his stupid insecurity and need to think things
through.
