Chapter Five
William replayed his uncle’s words over again in his mind. He’s going to be staying with us for a while. Had he heard his uncle correctly? At some point he had woundseatseated beside Liam once more. He snapped out of his stupor in time to focus on the conversation taking place around him.
“Father,” his cousin Wesley reasoned. “You can’t be serious.” He turned to William and Liam, frowning as he ran his eyes over the pair. “Surely you are not going to take this …” Before Wesley had a chance to complete what he had intended to say, Liam stood and raised his brows in a seemingly innocent, gesture. To anyone with vision, the threat behind the look was obvious. Complete that sentence and pay dearly. “Dear God.” Wesley mumbled before flopping down in defeat in an unoccupied seat. His female companion made her way over to her boyfriend, sitting on the arm of the chair and running her fingers over his brow in a soothing manner. Rupert Giles shared a look with Liam. Both men smirked as if the had just shared some private joke.
“Yes, well,” the older man began. “Now that all initial arguments have been made,” he turned a disappointed glance toward his son before turning back to his nephew. “It seems that we need to make arrangements to retrieve your things from where you have been staying.” Liam coughed gaining the man’s attention.
“Actually, I was kind of hoping that you would take the kid in.” He looked at William who had still not spoken since his attempt to leave the premises. “His bag’s in the car.” Having said this, Liam made his way to the door. William, fearing being left alone with his newfound family, stood and followed. Liam turned and placed his hand on the teen’s chest halting him from following any further. “No Will. You stay. I’ll be back in a sec.” The kid might as well get used to being around these folks.
He opened the door and slipped out leaving the scared boy alone with Rupert and Wesley for the first time. William bit his lip, refusing to make eye contact with either man. He returned to his place on the couch and waited anxiously for Liam to return. From where he stood observing the occupants of the room, Rupert was able to peer out of the window. He noticed that Liam had just lit a cigarette and was currently leaning up against his vehicle enjoying a smoke. Good. This will give me a bit of time to interview the boy without his protector..
“So William,” His uncle started. William jumped. Looking at the man with blinking eyes. Shit! I wasn’t trying to scare him. He sat across from the boy on the loveseat. “I want you to know that I feel terrible for what you’ve had to ordeal throughout the years.” William began to shift uncomfortably in his seat. He looked toward the door. Damn it Liam. He thought angrily. Sensing his discomfort, Rupert tried to ease William’s fear a little. “Your friend is outside enjoyina a ciggarette.” He explained. “He should be in shortly. I was hoping to ask you a few things while we have a moment.” William looked at the man and nodded, “Fine then,” He rubbed a hand over his face before speaking. “I assume that you’ve engage in some rather unsavory activities while on your own. Am I correct?” William nodded looking at his uncle skeptically. He wondered where the man was heading with his questioning.
“I really don’t want to get in to that if you don’t mind.” William answered. Hearing Wesley snort at his admission caused William to jump again. He’d forgotten that the man was in the room he’d been so quiet. He shot the man a glare. “Care to share the joke mate?” William asked, regaining a bit of his nerve. It was one thing for him to down himself. Hell, he was the one living this shitty life, but he’d be damned if he’d let this poncy bastard laugh at his expense. Totally enthralled by his nephew’s change in attitude, Rupert was tempted to see how far things might go if he didn’t intervene. It seemed that the boy had a fluctuating personality, subjective to mood swings. Fascinating really. He shook himself out of his thoughts taking control of the conversation once more.
“Enough, both of you.” He stated. William rolled his eyes. Wesley had the decency to look more contrite. “William, I simply am stating that although you may haven abn able to do whatever you liked when you were on your own, there will be certain rules that I will expect you to follow now that you will be under my guardianship.” William laughed dismissingly.
“That’s bloody brilliant mate,” He laughed harder, holding his stomach as if he were in pain. “You do know that I’m nineteen years old don’t you? I don’t need a bloody guardian.” He spat. Rupert looked on as William carried on with what he was coming to view as theatrics. He sighed.
“Are you quite finished?” When William sniffed, and looked at him with a mocking grin, Rupert continued. “Yes, well judging from your initial appearance on my doorstep, you came here for a reason. As your oldest living relative, I am assuming responsibility for you whether you like it or not. I will not have a nephew of mine pan handling on the street, selling drugs or what have you, now that I am aware of your predicament. Are we clear?” Liam reentered the house on Rupert’s last question.
“Clear about what?” He asked perplexed. He’d tried to stall outside in order to let the threesome bond some. Having no living relatives of his own, he had no idea that such a bond would take more time to establish itself. Glancing at William and seeing his smirk Liam dreaded what may have occurred while he had lingered outside smoking. William looked at Liam and smiled.
“Listen to this mate,” William began. “It seems me long lost uncle thinks that he can just order me about as though I were some wet behind the ears bloke. Someone should tell em that I don’t need a bloody sitter.” William growled. Liam regarded his friend openly. Oh, Will how wrong you are.
“I hate to disagree with you Will,” Liam began, shocking the younger man. “But you are a wet behind the ears bloke in need of a sitter. Now stop acting like an ass, and give your uncle a chance.” Liam ordered. Rupert Giles was impressed by the effect that Liam’s words had on the boy. William’s smirk was instantly replaced by an apologetic pout, and some of the tough guy personae seemed to disappear. Fascinating.
“Thank You. I think.” Rupert said. “As I was saying, William, if you are to live here, there will be rules. To begin with, you will have a curfew.” When William threw his arms out in exasperation and turned to Liam pleadingly, the brunette shook his head and pointed in Rupert’s direction. William complied sulkily. “As, you are unfamiliar with the area, and have no other acquaintances here, you really have no need to stay out all hours of night do you?” Rupert clarified. “Also, it has occurred to me that due to your unusual upbringing,” William and Liam exchanged a glance at the man’s use of the word unusual. “You have had no formal education. We hold education in high regard in this household. We will see to it that you take a competency exam so that we can look into getting you proper schooling.” William looked at his uncle in horror. Schooling. Just what had he gotten himself into? The rational side of his brain agreed with his uncle’s plan. He knew that the man’s logic was reasonable. But the willful side of his brain, the side that hade been making the decisions concerning his life up until now, was reluctant to step down now.
“I don’t need to go to school,” he sneered. When his uncle turned cold eyes on him, he stared back defiantly. Inside he was a mess but he was not going to let this stranger call all of the shots, regardless as to whether he was going to be helping him or not. The young woman whose presence was all but forgotten up until then, chose this moment to stand up.
“Wesley honey,” she started timidly. “Perhaps, we should go to the kitchen and make everyone a nice cup of tea.” She signaled with a rather obvious toss of her head toward the other room. When Wesley looked at her in confusion she sighed, grabbed his hand and pulled him up from his seat. Liam couldn’t help but notice that the girl was stronger than she looked.
“Oh. Yes!” Wesley responded embarrassingly. “Tea sounds lovely. Let’s go and make some.” He followed his girlfriend out of the room. He did however notice how Liam covered his mouth with his hand in order to shield his grin. Once the pair had left the room, Rupert replied to William’s declaration.
“Now, listen to me, being that you have no vocational skills that would be of use here in Sunnydale, your only other option is school. I will not have you sitting idle during your stay here.” If William that Rupert was going to be a push over, the boy was sadly mistaken.
“Will,” Liam spoke. “Maybe school won’t be so bad. It’ll give you a chance to meet other kids…”
“Other kids like what Liam?” William cut him off bitterly. “Other kids like me? That’s a laugh. You know what?” William stood to leave. “This was a crappy idea. I didn’t want to do this. I want to go…” Angered, Liam stood as well.
“Home? Is that what you were going to say William?” He sneered. “Sure let’s go. I’m sure that your customers are just dying to see you. “ He said dripping sarcasm. “Let’s go. It was nice meeting you Mr. Giles.” When William looked at him with hurt eyes, Liam feigned ignorance. “What? You want to leave, let’s leave.” When William didn’t move Liam sighed, relenting a bit. “Will, I know that you’re scared, alright. This isn’t easy. I get that. But do you really want to return to what you’ve been doing? Why don’t you give this a chance? If worse comes to worse, give me a call and I’ll come get you.” William’s head shot up instantly.
“What, you’re leaving?” He hadn’t really considered that he would be staying in Sunnydale alone. Liam knew that his absence would be a problem.
“Of course kid.” He grinned. “You really didn’t see me staying did you? Now before you get your knickers in a twist, I’ll be checking up on you from time to time.” In an effort to further sooth William’s nerves, Rupert stepped in.
“Yes, Liam is it?” He addressed the taller man. “Your visits will be welcome, as would any phone calls made to check up on William’s progress.” Liam turned thankful eyes on the man.
“Thanks. I’m trusting you to take good care of him.” Liam turned to William and shrugged. “So, I guess this is it.” William’s eyes were filled with tears.
“Li,” he stepped closer to his friend. “I don’t think that I can do this.”
“Listen Will,” Liam pulled the boy into a tender embrace. “I’m only a phone call away.” He pulled back and placed a kiss on William’s forehead. Turning to leave, Liam made eye contact with William’s uncle once again. “Take good care of my boy.” At the man’s nod, Liam continued on his way to the door, ignoring William’s choked off sobs. He left without a goodbye. No longer concerned with what his uncle might think of him, William sat down and hid his face in his hands as he cried silently. It had been some years since he had felt so alone. Wesley and his girlfriend reentered the room, with the aforementioned tea on a tray with a plate of cookies. Taking in his cousin’s emotional state, Wesley looked at his father in silent question. When Rupert shook his head, the girl placed the heavy tray on the coffee table and made her way over to the crying young man.
“Hey now,” she began. “None of that.” She reached over to pull a few tissues from a box on an end table within easy reach. She dabbed carefully at William’s eyes before he took the tissue from her in order to wipe his nose. She smiled. “That’s better. You know they’re really not so bad?” She looked over her shoulder at the two other Englishmen. “I’m sure that once you get to know one another ya’ll get along just swell. I’m Fred by the way.” She stuck out her hand. William nervously took hold of it and gave it a slight shake.
“Uncle Rupert?” William questioned. “Is there anywhere that I can lie down?” He looked at his uncle and waited for his response.
“Um yes,” Rupert removed his glasses and began the needless task of cleaning them again. “Upstairs, second door on the left. Feel free to make yourself at home. I’ll send Wesley up with your things in a moment.” William nodded. He suddenly felt very tired.
“Thank you.” He gave what he hoped resembled a grin to Fred before excusing himself and making his way upstairs to his assigned room. Again, Rupert looked at the boy in puzzlement. William was revealing himself to be a complicated young man indeed.
Once William had made his way to his new bedroom, he lay down on the his side, gripping his pillow tightly. Now that he was by himself, he allowed the tears to flow freely. He was alone. Liam was gone and he was now utterly and completely alone. Where did he go from here?
