Yearnings Part 4
Spike’s POV
*Damm*
I paced the floor of the training room I hated waiting and the fact that my brooding great git of a sire was here as well was getting on my nerves. Angel sat by the window staring out at the day, every now and then he got up and went to the front of the shop, patrolling. Time was ticking by and my sire was starting to get irritated.
“Spike will you stop that pacing.”
I shot him a filthy look and turned at the end of the room, starting off on another leg of my journey. Angel threw a look heavenward and sighed his arms outstretched in the classic why me position.
“What?”
“Pacing isn’t going to help.”
“Its helping me not to tear your frigging head off isn’t it.”
Angel stood and walked over to me, intersecting my path and stopping me in my tracks. He grasped me by my shoulders and shook me gently, his dark eyes focused intently on mine.
“I’m worried too childe, just wait they will be here soon.”
The tension in me lessened slightly, I hate to admit it but my sire has always had a way of calming me. Not wanting him to think he had the upper hand, I decided to question him.
“So what’s up with you and the ex-watcher?”
“Wesley and I are fine.”
A sardonic lift of the eyebrow and the look on my face must be readable cause he dropped his hands and turned to sit back down.
“Really, we’re getting along great. The sex is…amazing, and I love him…and he loves me.”
The eyebrow lowers slowly and combines well with the scepticism in my voice.
“Oh really.”
“Yes, why is it so hard for you to accept that, I thought you liked Wesley.”
I walk over and seat myself beside him, searching in my pockets for a smoke.
“Never said I didn’t like him, did I.”
“No but why the talk...you obviously think something’s wrong.”
I light up and take a drag, blowing smoke out slowly before turning to look my sire in the eyes.
“And you think nothings wrong peaches?”
He looks unsure of himself and I cover one of his hands with mine.
“You know something’s wrong don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Well fix it you great git, if you love him do something about it.”
“I do love him, but I can’t give him what he wants.”
“Ah he wants to be claimed, mated to you doesn’t he.”
Angel sighs and clutched my hand, his head dropped to rest on my shoulder.
“He thinks I don’t love him because I wont claim him, he pretends it doesn’t matter but I know he wants to be with me for eternity.”
“And what, you don’t want him too?”
“Of course I want that, but I don’t want to turn him…I understand now what you meant about not turning Xander. He wouldn’t be the same man and I’m not sure I could live with that.”
Tara’s soft voice broke the uncomfortable silence that had enveloped us,
“Ask the goddess for help.”
Angel leapt to his feet as the young witch walked towards him.
“Tara, is it possible…I mean is it allowed that we do this…. ask for something more than what we’ve already been given.”
Tara smiled gently, taking Angel’s hand in hers she placed it on the shirt-covered tattoo on his chest.
“The goddess Brid gave you help when you asked for it, she will again if your request is true…you have only to ask her.”
“See peaches problem solved.”
Angel looked flabbergasted, his mouth dropped open and he stared for a few moments. I could see the wheels going around and around in his head and decided to shake him up a bit.
“When could we set that up pet?”
Tara’s calm aura settled over Angel and he squeezed her hand lightly, his eyes expressing the hope she’d given him.
“I’d have to check with Willow and Giles, these rituals can only be done at specific times of the year.”
Angel’s eyes glittered for a second with unshed tears and then he quickly regained his inner balance. I saw how glanced at his watch and frowned, Wesley should have returned with Xander by now. I was beginning to feel edgy myself. I reached for my cell phone and hit the redial. Xander’s phone rang out and I grit my teeth, shaking my head at Angel’s unspoken question. He reached out and took the phone, dialling in his cell number, his face becoming grimmer as that number also rang out.
“Damm, where the hell are they?”
The late afternoon sun was streaming in the shops front window and I could only pace and glare at Angel as we waited for dusk. We left as soon as the sun was low enough not to singe us on the way to Willow’s car. I drove out to Xander’s site silently, my heart sinking at the sight of his truck and the angelmobile still parked outside the dark office. Angel tore out of the car before I pulled up, sprinting through the open office door. I followed him warily, extending my senses as I walked up to the eerily still building. I found him head bowed in his hands, he turned ravaged dark eyes on me and I wrinkled my nose at the sour odour in the air.
“Gas.”
He nodded dumbly and I looked around, Xander’s keys sat on the desk, office papers were scattered over the floor near it, like they’d just been knocked over. There were heavy scuffmarks on the floor near the door but it was impossible to tell what they were from. My sire looked numb and I felt like killing the great git, if he had only let me go and get Xan. Rage boiled up in me and I swung at him, grief flooding through me for my missing mate. Angel looked up at me in surprise as I threw the first punch. He let it strike him but as I went to hit him again he blocked it, using the momentum to pull me into the circle of his arms, hugging me tightly to his chest.
“Stop,Spike... don’t.”
“God dammit Angel, they’re gone, you should have let me go when I wanted to.”
His voice broke in over mine and I could smell the salt as tears came to his eyes.
“I’d have lost you too.” He whispered.
I stopped struggling and lay my head on his shoulder, eyes burning with unshed tears.
“No.”
“Yes childe, we have to concentrate on finding them now.”
I sniffed and straightened slightly, Angel’s arms yielded a little as I tried to compose my self.
“Your right, we’d better get back to the witches and the little bit. Maybe Glinda can scry for them.”
We left the deserted building. Angel drove his car and followed me back to the magic shop. I stared at the tattoo on the back of my hand for a moment, feeling an ache in my heart for Xander. I could only hold on to the hope that Willow would be able to help us find them.
Xander’s POV
Slowly I felt the darkness lifting from my mind. I blinked dry eyes and stifled a groan as I tried to move my cramped body. My head and wrists ached and I felt like I was leaning forward. Words were whispered to me and I struggled to make sense of the soft sounds. I tilted my head from side to side, trying to relieve the ache that resided there but didn’t succeed. The sounds became words and the familiar voice seemed to be close by. The world swam into order as my eyes adjusted to the darkness of the room, and I started in surprise at what I saw.
“Wesley?”
Angel’s lover was chained to the wall opposite me. I glanced at my body and saw I was in a similar position, heavy manacles around my wrists and ankles chained upright to the wall. I stood a little straighter and the ache in my wrists eased as I took my weight back onto my feet.
“Are you alright Xander?”
“Yeah, I think so Wes, apart from a few aches that is.”
“That’s just a reaction to the gas Xander.”
The feminine voice intruded and I tensed as Faith sauntered into view. She stopped in front of me and smiled gloatingly.
“I told you it wasn’t over lover.”
I grit my teeth and held my voice steady as I stared at the dark haired slayer.
“What do you want with us Faith?”
I flinched away as her hand came up to gently touch my cheek, her fingers drifted slowly down to my throat til they rested on my collarbone.
“Personally Xan... I’d like to kill you, slowly.”
Her hand tightened around my throat and pain flickered across her features. She let go suddenly and her voice was tight with rage.
“But I can’t so, I’ll have to settle for letting someone else kill you.”
“Faith.”
Wesley voice was even as he tried to reason with the ex slayer.
“Why do you want to kill us Faith? We know that the council of watchers are the ones responsible for your acts.”
Faith spun on her heel and faced him, her dark eyes trapped and wary.
“If you know that then you know why I have to do this?”
“You don’t have to do this Faith, let us go, we can help you.”
Faith shook her head, her dark hair falling around her pale face.
“Nobody can help me, I’m only good for one thing.” She glanced back at me and I shuddered at the remembrance of her hands on my body, on my throat.
“Well maybe two, but still, ya gotta go with your strengths.”
She strode back to the door and wrenched it open, disappearing into the other room slamming the door behind her. I could hear the sounds of raised voices muffled by the door and an ominous growling. I looked over at Wesley’s worried face and pulled on my chains, surprised as they gave a little. Wesley looked hopeful and urged me silently to try again, I pulled again and the chain creaked. I kicked my leg out with all my might and the chain stretched and broke. I kicked the other leg free and started pulling on my arms, when the door wrenched open and a tall blonde man entered. He was followed by Faith pushing a bound vampire in front of her.
The vampire snarled and lunged but Faith just threw him against the wall like a doll, a stake appearing in her hand. She thrust it forward but a hand snapped out and the blonde man grabbed her wrist. Faith turned her head, her face twisted into a mask of hatred as the unknown man waited, she dropped her eyes from his in submission and he let go of her hand. She pulled the vampire in front of her and forced him towards Wesley. I carefully put more pressure on the chains holding my wrists. In the darkened room they I had to hope that they hadn’t noticed that I’d freed my legs. The blonde man’s voice slid like oil across the distance between us, Wesley’s eyes narrowed as he looked at him.
“Wesley Wyndam Price, it’s been a long time.”
“Really Bradburn, it hardly seems that its been long enough.”
The blonde mans eyes flickered over Wesley and he smiled disdainfully as he dismissed him. He turned his head and met my gaze, his grey eyes locking with mine in a silent contest of wills.
“Mr Harris, you’ve become somewhat of a problem lately. Really, consorting with vampires, its hardly the done thing is it?”
I felt my muscles tensing as I stared down at my captor, his air of superiority grating on my already frayed nerves.
“And what the fuck makes you think I’m in the least bit interested in your opinion?”
The smile slipped slightly on Bradburn’s pasty face and his eyes narrowed, he turned to Faith and motioned her to bring the vampire forward.
“Well since your not inclined to make small talk we shall just get straight down to business then shall we.”
Wesley swallowed as the vampire drew nearer, the beast snarled and saliva dripped down the sharp pointed fangs.
“You two shall die. Killed by vampires, so that your friends will be unaware of our hand in this game. And then when the time is right they in turn shall be…erased.”
“You’ll never get away with this.”
“On the contrary we shall get away with this, and you shall die…now.”
Faith pushed the vampire up against Wesley, reaching over its shoulder to pull Wesley’s head to the side. The vampire lunged, fangs piercing the pale golden skin, Wesley howled in pain as his blood was pumped out of his body. I couldn’t stand it I threw myself against the chains with all my might and staggered when they snapped.
I quickly regained my balance and struck out at Bradburn knocking him unconscious against the wall. Faith turned and kicked out at me, her forehead wrinkled in what looked like pain. I dodged her blow and shouldered her out of the way, dragging the vampire off of Wesley. Faith tried again to hit me, her punch actually clipping my jaw. Pain blossomed through my face but I kept going, she had crumpled to the floor in agony clutching her temples.
The vampire had taken the opportunity to make a run for it and had disappeared out the door into the darkness. I glanced at Bradburn and saw that he was coming to. I pulled hard and broke the chains on Wesley’s wrists and ankles, taking his weight as he slumped forward. I shouldered him and headed quickly out the door, following in the footsteps of the vampire. And exit sign glowed in the dim light and I bolted through the opening, when we got outside I could see it was still night.
We seemed to be in the industrial area of Sunnydale, warehouses surrounded us on all sides. I staggered into a run, we had to get out of here, or we were as good as dead. In the distance I saw a gas station and lurched towards it. Once inside I borrowed the phone and called the magic shop, relieved to hear Willow’s voice on the other end of the line.
“Willow.”
“Xander, oh Xander we’ve been so worried, where are you?”
“We’re at the gas station near the old warehouse district, can you come get us? Its not safe here.”
“I’ll call Spike on his cell and he’ll be there as soon as he can okay.”
“Thanks Will and tell him to step on it please, Wesley’s been hurt.”
“Oh goddess, he’ll be there in a minute just hang on.”
“Ok thanks Willow.”
I hung up feeling a little better, at least Spike would know I was safe. I looked over at where Wesley was slumped in a chair. His face was so pale. If I hadn’t have stopped the vamp when I did, it probably would have been too late. But had I really saved him, I hoped he wouldn’t have to go through what I had. But he’d been bitten and the vamp that did it was still out there. Wesley would have the same cravings that I’d had. I hoped to god that Angel would be able to help him.
