Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Reviews: LadyVirgo1956 - Kate is out of this story now, as for Anne there was a reason for what she did and when you read the end of this chapter you'll know why. As for Darla and Dru well...
Daeomae - Thanks for the review, can't comment you'll see why but I hope you'll enjoy
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.
Chapter Thirty-Six
Gunn hid amongst the patrons at the bar and bite club. He knew that Anya, Spike and Angel were all hiding in plain sight waiting for the two vampires to appear. Faith had wanted to come but some of the patrons would probably be able to sense the vampire slayer. For the same type of reason Xander wasn’t there, almost all demons would instantly recognise a consort and consorts were so rare that his presence would draw attention that they really didn’t need. The others were with the car two blocks away waiting for these four to get back with the information they needed. A fight was in progress between a green demon and a vampire with most of the patrons crowding around watching and cheering. The demon danced around the vampire, hitting him and dancing out of the vampire’s blows. The demon managed to finally grab the vampire round the throat attempting to rip the vampires head off but before he could the vampire slapped the floor with his hand conceding defeat.
Angel turned around as he heard rhythmic clapping that interrupted the cheers from the winner. His girls were here. The crowd parted sensing power to reveal Darla followed by Drusilla who walked into the middle of the circle.
"Wow. That was something. But violence without victims, see, that's where you lose me." Darla announced to the gathering at large.
"Who the hell are you?" An anonymous demon demanded.
"My name's Darla and this is Drusilla. We're new in town, though some of you know us by reputation." She boasted already sizing up those demons closest, getting the feel of them.
"I never heard of you before." Drusilla who had been relatively unnoticed up until this point reached up from behind the doubting demon and casually ripped off his ears. The demon dropped to the floor with a scream, his hands were pressed to the sides of his head where yellow fluid was dripping down.
"Now you never will. I trust we have everyone's attention? Good. We've come with a little proposition." Anya stood tall, as Darla looked her way knowing that the vampiress had never seen her before and did not know her connection to Angel.
"Me and my girl, we're not just the new thing in town we're the only thing in town. And we're in the market for some... Well, one doesn't really want to use the term 'muscular slaves... Actually, one does. Unfortunately for most, we're only looking for the best. Those creatures who not only excel at devastation, but revel in it. Our crusade is one of malevolent joy." Spike shook his head at Darla’s arrogance as he moved through the demon crowd head down and covered, as his peroxide hair was too noticeable. Dru gasped as Spike slipped past the demon standing behind her.
"Eyes like needles," she murmured.
"Dru, I'm working here?" Darla told her scoldingly.
"He sees you. Sees what you were,” Drusilla gasped and took a step closer to Darla as the stars whispered to her. “You'll never be alone again."
"Stop! J…just don't." Darla was spooked at how coherent Drusilla was being during one of her moments.
"He's watching you, my sweet, right now." Drusilla talked to the spectra of herself that only she could see, telling herself that Spike could see her, unaware of Darla or anything else around her. Darla spun around and searched the crowd at Drusilla’s words.
"Angel." She breathed pushing through the crowd, wanting to know if he was there.
"He wants to punish us. He thinks we've been naughty. He remembers when you were warm," Drusilla murmured turning in circles as she watched herself dance with her long dead father. Darla turned and yelled at her crazy grandchilde/Sire.
"Shut up, Drusilla!" Darla turned back to the watching crowd wanting to save face. "Now, as I was saying, if you think you have what it takes to join us, auditions are tonight, here,” Darla pulled a business card out of her cleavage. “at this address. Winners will have the opportunity to create mass-destruction; losers will be gutted and left for dead. Have a nice night.” She dropped the card on the floor before grabbing a hold of Drusilla’s arm and hustling her towards the door. “Come on." Anya made sure she caught a look at the address after the two vampiress had left before meeting up with the others back at Angel’s convertible with Gunn’s truck parked right behind it.
“Hey, how did it go?” Xander greeted his lovers as they appeared round the side of the building with Gunn and Anya following. Angel immediately took both lovers into his arms breathing their combined scent.
“It was… hard. Seeing her. I should have saved her.” Xander punched Angel in the arm startling him out of his self-flagellating thoughts.
“Oh you just stop that right there buster! I don’t want to hear anything about blaming yourself. What’s done is done and now we need to focus on stopping those two monsters.” Angel looked contrite at Xander causing Spike to laugh.
“He’s got a point there peaches, so lets get this show on the road so that I can take the two of you home and show you some real flagellation.” Spike leered at them. Willow shook her head, but she did see Xander’s smile and was glad that he was happy.
“Okay, so what did we learn?” Wesley asked, ignoring Spike’s inappropriate comments.
“They are forming an army and want applicants to meet them at a warehouse, I managed to see the address for tonight,” Anya told the group.
“So how are we gonna do this?” Gunn asked, “It’s not a good idea to gatecrash and try and take on the vamps plus a whole bunch of demons.”
“What if we get there first and knock them off one by one as they come in?” Faith asked.
“Great idea,” Willow gushed, “but won’t they spot the cars before they reach the door?” Everyone thought about this for a moment before Gunn offered an answer.
“We can park the cars in the warehouse with us, I’ve done it before.”
*****
They were arranged in the warehouse, waiting silently for the first of the demons to appear. They had no idea how many would respond to Darla’s summons but they were sure it would be quite a few, maybe more than they could handle, but they had to try. Drusilla and Darla could not be left to run around Los Angeles where they could create all kinds of havoc. Plus it was Angel’s home, and since moving here, he had managed to clean the place up quite a bit. Vampires, demons and other dangerous elements gave the city a wide berth now because they didn’t want to cross Angel. If word got out that he couldn’t control a couple of vampires who were of the same line but both below him in the hierarchy, then the city would see an influx of dark forces again and it would be even more unsafe to go outside at night.
Xander was bouncing on the balls of his feet, a nervous ball of energy while Spike chained smoked his way through a pack of cigarettes and Angel just stood there like a statue, lost in his own internal thoughts as he stared at his sword blade. Willow and Tara were stationed near the door while the boys were right in the middle of the industrial space.
Faith hated waiting, was more of a run head first into a situation and never reflect kind of gal, but prison had given her nothing but time to think and she had found a few mediative strategies that worked for her. However, all her senses were trained on what was on the other side of the door and she was ready to bounce into action when needed.
Gunn was toting his hubcap axe and paired with Wesley and his crossbows over to one side. He swung it round a few times feeling its perfect balance in his hands. Not bad for something he made himself out of flinched parts when he was still living on the street. Even though he had since moved up in the world and could now afford his own expertly made weapons or even borrow Angel’s he still held on to and only used those he’d made. It was a reminder of where he’d come from and the simple philosophy he’d had back then of protecting those in his neighbourhood. Though having more fancy methods now, he still had to focus that what he was doing was looking after those less able to protect themselves from those things that go bump in the night.
Everyone in the room tensed as they heard gruff voices nattering on, as they came closer to where the heroes were hiding in the dark. The sliding corrugating iron door slid open noiselessly as three hideous demons came through still involved in whatever discussion was taking place and did not pay any attention to their surroundings. This was their downfall. They were immediately set upon by Faith and the vampires who worked one on one to beat their enemy quickly and effectively. After that first wave more came in bigger groups and the groups were closer together until all the AI members were in the thick of things, beating down their opponents. At one point Xander was sure that he wasn’t going to make it through this alive, but Anya, who sliced the ugly demons head off with a shovel, rescued him. She had lost her stake a long while ago, not that it was very effective against this lot anyway, but had found her current weapon in a corner when she’d been thrown into it and was now using it with brutal efficiency. Finally the last demon was slain and lying in a pool of its own blood.
“Okay everyone fall back to the cars,” Angel demanded, “We don’t have much time they are on their way.” Angel grabbed the can of gasoline out of the back of his car and splashed it all over the demons and made a trail from the sliding doors to the front of his car where Spike and Xander were sitting. Once he was done he throw the can to Gunn who put it away while he sat on the front of his car and snagged one of Spike’s fags. They sat there waiting as the vampiresses came closer. Soon they could hear the conversation going on outside, while inside they were as still as statues hoping that Darla and Drusilla were too occupied to pay attention to the human heartbeats inside or the stench of rotting demon flesh.
"I don't miss my heartbeat, Dru. It was a symptom of a disease I've since been cured off. You know, in a perfect world, Angel would be here right now, helping me burn this city to the ground. This is his job I'm doing. But where is he? Probably flogging himself in a church somewhere." Xander could here Darla now but sat perfectly still between his lovers.
"Ooh, flogging! Eew, churches." Spike silently laughed at his dark princess’ words; there was a time where they had liked destroying churches together but that time was long past.
"In a perfect world we'd be slaughtering the innocent. Laughing as we rain destruction on this whole miserable town." Darla was bitter, she wanted her glory days back, not this nightmare.
"I see such pretty fire." Angel stiffened at his crazy childe’s words, had she seen what Angel had planned for them, was she going to convince Darla to not come waltzing into the trap they had set.
"Fire. Conflagration. In a perfect world there'd be nothing left here but ashes."
"And pain. So much suffering. The flames are lovely. They dance, and the fire licks like a cat. And the screams, oh, it's like star music." Angel wanted to sigh in relief, it seemed Drusilla couldn’t decipher the images she’d seen.
"I want to make this quick, alright? We get in there, weed out the losers, and get out. I've got precious little patience left." Darla sounded frustrated, annoyed like she hadn’t sounded for a very long time.
"Oh, it's beautiful! Dank and dark. It reeks of death."
"That's motor oil, Dru."
"Can we buy it? It could be our castle."
"There's no view. Plus we're broke." Drusilla placed her hand on the handle of the door and saw an image of what was currently inside.
"Ten little soldiers, all in a line. A shot rings out, down to nine." Spike could remember when he used to sing that song to Dru when she was in one of her moods. He suddenly realised how hard this was going to be, how much history they had with the vampiresess, but this still had to be done.
"Ten? I'd be happy if we could find three who can hack it." Darla slid open the corrugated iron door and they walked in to find the floor littered with demon corpses, severed limbs and piles of ash.
"Dead already? Bad soldiers!" Drusilla scolded the dead demons. Darla glanced around to see who had done this and found Angel, Spike and Xander leaning against the hood of his dusty car. The two vampires were smoking cigarettes but apart from that the trio did not move nor say a word.
"I should have known." Darla smiled, thinking about how her boy still cared, even if it was now for the wrong types of things.
"A shadow," Drusilla spoke out loud shaking her head then lifting her hand as if to move a veil from in front of her face but never taking her eyes off the trio.
"Why so far away, my love? Why don't you come over here and... stake me?” Darla was surprised when she had no response from the brooding vampire who just continued to smoke in between his lovers. “Angel?"
"Angelus?" Darla asked wondering, not understanding. Angel finally threw down the cigarette butt. It ignited a trail of gasoline that raced forward, the flames bringing the warehouse into sharp relief with their light. Darla and Drusilla just watched as the flames raced towards them lighting up the puddle of gasoline they were unknowingly standing in. The trio ignored the shrieks of the burning vampires as they ran out of the warehouse. As Angel, Spike and Xander stood up the two male vampires stumbled, feeling the death of one of their line. Darla was dead and Angel didn’t feel the heartache he had the last time. They waited for a couple of minutes in case Drusilla dusted as well but when they didn’t feel it they silently got into the back of the car and let the others drive them home.

By the time the cars pulled into the garage at the Hyperion, high spirits reigned. They had successfully gotten rid of one of their big opponents. Now they only had to deal with Glory, but that was for another day. Right now they needed to relax, and Faith had already suggested a party that the others had taken up with enthusiasm. The vampires with a smiling Xander in between them were the first through the Hyperion’s doors.
“We can have ice cream and chocolate and crank up the sound sys…” Xander stopped mid-sentence sensing the tension in his mates. He looked around the lobby to see what was causing this. All he could see was Joyce asleep on one of the couches though she was lying at an awkward angle.
“Joyce?” Spike flew across the lobby with the others right behind him. “Joyce?” he called out again feeling for her pulse though he knew it was useless as his vampire senses had been telling him since he walked through the door.
No Pulse
Joyce was dead.
