Ben was waiting for them at the apartment when they got back. The sun had long since set, and their feet were heavy on the stairs. Ben opened the door a crack. When nothing jumped out to attack him and nothing grotesque greeted him, he opened it wider to them and smiled shakily. “Welcome home.”
Spike nodded, hands in his jeans pockets, looking down. Spike had hollows under his eyes, and a deeper pallor than was his natural white. Xander didn’t look much better, his head was lowered and he looked well worn out by the lengthy talk they'd had with the police. Now they had no suspect, and that meant finding a new one.Suddenly Xander made a surprised sound and he ran for his room, coming out a few moments later with a shoe box and a photo album. He sat on the floor and quickly dumped the contents of the box in front of him. Out poured the fan notes that he hadn’t gotten around to reading, keeping, or throwing away. “Maybe he’s in here, in my notes! I haven’t read them all. Spike, maybe it’s not about you, maybe it’s about me! Come on, help me look through these. There has to be something, right?” He looked up at them hopefully.Ben sat down to help and Spike sighed and joined them. “Okay, but we share our findings, and no panicking, alright?”Xander and Ben nodded and got to work. Most were lecherous, some were requests for dances or moves, some were numbers and address’s, and some were pictures. The list went on and on. Finally, in the mess of unsorted notes Xander found one written in an extremely elegant script, but in some kind of unfamiliar language. Xander was familiar in quite a few, thanks to his Watcher training. “What’s this?” He hand it over to Spike.Spike looks at it, turning it sideways and upside-down, holding it up to the light, finally shook his head. “Not in any language I know. What about you Ben?”Ben took the ornate slip of paper and looked at it for barely a second before he said, “I’ll be right back. Got to get something.” He ran out of their apartment.Xander and Spike looked at each other and shrugged. “Maybe his drennar parents or clan taught him something?” Spike suggested to Xander who only shrugged in response.Xander walked to the living room and fell onto the huge sectional with a groan. “Who is it Spike? Who? Who could be doing such… such horrible things and and and… just presenting us with those hearts, like offerings.”“Don’t know pet, or I would have told the cops.” He sat down next to him and buried his face in his palms.“Would you really have Spike? Really? Or would you take care of it yourself? It’s Steve and Chad, and I don’t know how you feel about Greg, but you must have cared about him at some point, and now you know this wasn’t him so you can’t blame it on him anymore.”Xander sat up and looked at Spike’s bare toes, marveling at how good they looked against the pale hardwood of the floor, at how the tendons looked so delicate yet so strong, and he just had to get his mind back on track! What did he say again?“Sorry Spike. Could you repeat that? I was stuck in... sorry. So do you honestly think you’d tell the cops if you knew who the true killer was?” Xander looked at him, concentrating on Spike’s lips, Spike’s mouth, Spike’s voice. Oh it was dreamy... wait!! LISTEN!! To the words, not just his voice!“… it was Greg, ‘m not a fighter anymore, can’t protect anyone. I’m human, need human protection, and humans go to cops.”Xander got a sick feeling at the pit of his stomach. It was sour and twisting and making him want to throw up. “What if it’s a demon?”Spike snorted. “Demons eat hearts, they don’t offer them up on altars like that unless it’s in show of respect to their elder or superior or in some… kind… of… oh damn…”Ben came running into the apartment, carrying a very heavy, very old scroll. He put it down with a thud on Spike’s dining room table and unrolled both ends to reveal a bit of a story. “Look, it shows it right here: human hearts are offered for love prayers, but only by one demon family. They’re the uhhhh, well, that part’s smudged, but they’re some kind of… ew… rotten meat demons. Here, look at the pictures.” He turned his head and coughed, making soft gagging sounds. It looked to be the same size, shape and make up as a human except the description read that they were inhumanly fast and strong, and possessed no skin. They therefore had thousands of maggots all over their bodies, keeping them healthy. They didn’t even have eyelids. The pictures showed the demons purposefully getting maggots and infesting themselves, so this wasn’t something they waited around on for mother nature to do naturally. They ate nothing but rotten meat, the kind that would make humans sick. The more spoiled the better — so really rotten meat, nothing any human would want anything to do with.Spike looked at Ben and raised a single scarred eyebrow. “You think that’s gross yet you can’t bring yourself to show anything of your true demon side. You hide in your human shell, just like almost your entire species. Only people who have seen what your kind look like end up dead as y’all regret it ‘soon as you do it, killing off the poor sap who trusted you with everything and knows no better.”“That doesn’t count,” Ben mumbled.“Hell it doesn’t,” countered Spike. “You got no rights calling anyone ugly if you can’t love all of yourself for yourself. To me, they have an elegant beauty, don’t you think Xan?”Xander looked at the pictures and had to admit they did look elegant. It was like looking at a well defined muscular body was beautiful. “They’re beautiful…”“There, see? Now stop being a tosser. Last night we got some gold coins. We didn’t touch them, but we don’t know what to do with them. If the gold’s cursed or something, we don’t want it out there in the public.”Ben sighed and nodded. “Fine, fine, I’ll drop it. To each their own demon. Bring me the coins, maybe I can tell you if they're safe.”Spike got up with a bounce and retrieved the coins from the drawer with a handkerchief. He looked down at them in his hand, glittering in the lamp light, the strange letters carved into each one, and took them to Ben. He put the handkerchief down on the table. The coins nestled in a neat pile on top.Ben looked at them and gasped. “Those are gold drachma! The same ones Priape would have seen in his temples in ancient Greece! Well, there he was Priapus, not Priape, but anyways! That’s the god's money Spike. Where did you get it?”“The bouncer gave it to me. Someone threw it on stage.” Spike shrugged.Xander kinda snorted. “We were a little too busy dancing to notice who put what where since it was our first time with that dance. All I can say is I heard them hit the stage, that’s it.”Ben got up and started to pace the length of their mock up stage, not really noticing, just pacing. Suddenly he stopped. “Oh! They’re not cursed or anything, don’t worry about that,. I would have felt the negative energies. Just can’t figure out what’s going on.”Spike winced, “I’ve got an idea.”“Well? Come on man, speak up!” Ben squeezed his hand in a way that he probably supposed was reassuring. He didn’t know how much it hurt to feel hand bones crush together in one of his patented handshakes.“D-demon’s leaving heart’s and flowers as offerings. To me, because he thinks I’m the new priest. This ain’t gonna end Ben…. Not till he’s caught and killed. We’re just humans. Our super powers are gone, our super powered friends are… gone… We can’t do this, the cops can’t do this. This is crazy Ben, what are we going to do?” Spike stopped his explosion of speech, then gulped for air, gasping, and panting.
