A.N. If you're just starting to read this fic, DO NOT START HERE, start at the beginning, this is a major plot twist coming up and it won't make any sense unless you know what's going on! I REPEAT! If you are new to this fic, DO NOT START HERE! Go to chapter 1!
They spent the morning and afternoon at Spike’s apartment, going over some pamphlets Ben had been given about funeral homes and final arrangements. They finally decided on cremation, all of them knowing just what kind of baddies were out there looking for fresh human parts and were not above grave robbing.Ben filled in the forms and Spike faxed them in where they needed to go. Ben sighed. “I need to go back to the police station and sign the release form so the b… so Steve can be taken care of,” he whispered.
Xander spoke, “Neither of us has a license but we’ll both come with you for support if you want us with you…”
“Oh thank gods. I could not imagine doing this alone.” He squeezed both their hands. “You two really are the best. Thank you so much.”
He composed himself while Spike and Xander got their wallets and watches, pretending not to notice or pay attention to Ben's tears. It seemed to be the way he wanted it, so it’s how they played it.
Ben blew his nose and packed a pocket full of tissues. When everyone was ready he opened the door, then promptly started screaming until he passed out. There was another bouquet, with yet another heart.
Xander caught him before he hit the floor. He cradled Ben’s head in his lap and groaned. When was Greg going to give up? He looked up accusingly at Spike who looked down and away.
“I’ll call the coppers,” he muttered and went to the kitchen to call, coming back a few minutes later with a cool damp towel for Ben. “Didn’t call an ambulance, they wouldn’t know what to do for him. Trust me, he’d best just to sleep this off…”
“Right,” Xander replied and looked down worriedly at Ben’s face. They couldn’t close the door without moving him, and he was easily six foot six, three hundred and change pounds of demon. They couldn’t lift him, and they needed him awake before the cops came!
They kept cooling his forehead and eventually his eyelids flickered open and he gasped, looking wildly at Spike and Xander above him. “I think I saw something that I shouldn’t have,” he whispered.
They nodded. “Yeah. Another twisted gift from Greg,” Spike said. “I’m sorry you had to see it. But the cops are going to be here any second and we can’t close the door with you in it.”
“Oh shoot! I forgot I fainted! My head doesn’t even hurt! Let me get up. Thanks, Lexxy,” He got up and gingerly probed his head for bruising as they closed the door. “I didn’t hit the ground?”
“No, I caught you before you did,” Xander said.
“Oh my HERO!” Ben hugged him. “You have no idea the headache I’d have right now if it wasn’t for you!” He kissed Xander on the forehead and smiled.
The smile quickly faded as a heavy knock sounded. Spike looked them over to make sure everything looked… alright… and opened the door. A police officer stood on the other side,. Another three were processing the scene.
“Mr. Williamson, I’m sorry to have to do this to you again, but we found another body in the dumpster,. We believe the perpetrator used his heart in this… thing.” He tapped something on his tablet and then turned it to face Spike. “Does this gentleman look familiar?”
Spike’s stomach sank through the floor to the bottom of the building, and then to the frozen layer of the earth where it lay, leaving him breathless. He stared at the image, eyes bugging out.
The officer noticed Spike's reaction. “Sir, do you know this man?” he asked. “Sir? Are you all right?”
Spike weaved on his feet,. Xander quickly got a chair from the kitchen and had him sit.
“Spike?”
“It… it’s Greg…”
