Ben looked them in the eyes and wheezed out, “Salted lime juice.” He snorted, falling asleep.
Xander and Spike looked at each other. Xander asked, “Did he just ask for a really disgusting drink that I don’t think he’d be capable of holding down, never mind craving right now?”Spike looked at Ben and shook his head. “He’s part drennar, must be. We gotta get him a really salty lime juice, and I mean salty, only thing that’ll flush out the sedatives, or he’ll die! He’s going to regain consciousness again once more in a little bit, we don’t have long, run Xander, run!” He grabbed Xander’s wrist and ran out of the room, like his duster was being ransomed and he had precious seconds, and for all Xander knew, Ben only had seconds.Spike ran to the corner grocer and bought bottles and bottles of lime juice, the entire stock, all sixteen, and three boxes of table salt. Xander helped to carry things, but he followed, totally in shock. Ben looked so normal, — a demon? Really? He thought they only congregated on hellmouths and other bad places. Did this mean this place had a hellmouth?Xander’s thoughts were shoved aside as he watched Spike empty all 16 bottle of lime juice and a box of salt into a water pitcher. They sat down and prayed they’d made it in time for his next lucid episode and hadn’t missed it.“So what’s a drennar?”“Peaceful, obedient, like to find a god to obey and spend an eternity obeying them, gives them a feeling of balance,” he stired the concoction with a straw. “Wonder what he’s doing here?”Xander shifted uncomfortably, “When he was yelling at everyone that they had to dance, even though we didn’t know where Steve was, he left and muttered something about it being okay and that he knew how to do the prayers himself…. Spike, I think he found a god, with Steve.”Spike nodded and sat in a chair at the head of Ben’s bed. “Makes sense, him finding someone willing to worship an almost dead god, if he found it worthy enough. Finding a mate that would also find the same things worth worshipping…” Spike sat and stirred the bitter and sour brew, hoping no nurse came by to check on them. Ben had been given enough sedative to knock out a man his size till tomorrow, and his fluids wouldn’t need replacing for another hour or so, so they were good, they just had… to wait.Xander got up and started to pace around their small room, eyes locked on Ben worriedly, watching time tick away on the clock on the wall. Finally Ben rolled his head and groaned, smacking his lips. “J-j-jui… uice” Spike got up and gave Ben the straw which he sucked thirstily, sitting up straighter the more it was drained till it was just juice and salt sludge. Ben sat up and scooped it down his throat with the straw and licked his lips.“Thanks. Listen, I know I have a lot of explaining to do, but I’d rather not do it here, can we go to your place and talk? I think you guys need to know some things…”Spike looked at him shrewdly, guessing what he knew wasn’t the entire story and nodded. “Let’s get you checked out.”~*~Ben walked into Spike's home without aid of any kind. He seemed perfectly fine other than a little tired,. He looked around. “I like what you’ve done with the place. Very you.”“Thanks,” He moved to the living room and indicated one of the plush chairs to Ben and fell into one himself,. Xander stood, his hands deep in his hoodie’s pocket. They all waited in silence for the other to speak first. Finally Ben spoke. “So I guess it’s fair I should explain what I am first-.”Spike smiled. “You’re a drennar, we know a little of demons, we come from a hellmouth. Ever hear of the crater Sunnydale?”Ben nodded, his jaw dropped. “So we would have been safe all along telling you?”“Of course, I know what drennars are, what they do. So what’s going on?”“Right,” Ben shook his head, “Down to business. I came here to this town, to this building, because it was the last standing temple to Priape.”Spike stared at him then slit his eyes. “You mean I’ve bought a TEMPLE from you?”“Wait!” Ben implored, hands up, his eyes still swimming with unshed tears. “I wanted to tell you from the start, but Steve told me to tell you nothing and to let to temple just die, but I can’t, and now he’s dead because of it.” Ben started sobbing, great uncontrolled heaving sobs. Xander found the tissue box and put it in his lap as he cried over his lost love.Eventually Xander got a plastic bag and gathered up all the used tissues on the floor and squeezed Ben’s hands in reassurance. “You didn’t kill him, Greg did, and the cops are going to get him. Jeez Ben, I’m so sorry. No one deserved this, especially Steven.”“Wait,” Ben said, and lifted his snotty, blotchy face to them and blew his nose again in a tissue. “You guys think a human did this? Really? Then never mind, we can let the temple die when we give you ownership.”“Now wait now wait,” Spike began. “I know a thing or two about gods and having one as a patron god is not necessarily a bad thing. He’s not a bad god to have as a patron god, if I recall correctly. Where’s the altar?”“The stage.”“What?” Spike gasped. “Out in the open like that, where anyone can see?”“But the altar needs to be open to its worshippers, see? There’s a clause written in all the dancer’s contracts that they may be used to call down divine power. It’s a small clause, and no one takes it seriously, but that’s what it is. The men dance, putting an offering on the altar, people pay and pray at the altar, the money goes to the god. We don’t keep a penny, but the dancers get a cut, it’s only fair. Even Priape sees that. We get money off the cover and the bar, that’s it. The prayer chamber is in the basement, behind the safe. It’s just entering the safe’s code backwards with an added one one. You have to burn the money in offering and make love, cumming simultaneously. That is important — however many people are in that room, they must all cum at the same moment for the prayer to work, and… that’s it. That’s all that’s necessary but you can do a lot more to keep the god happy. There’s a book in the prayer room. Feel free to read it, it’s going to be yours soon.” Ben looked tired, really really tired.“D’you wanna sleep on the couch bed? It folds out all comfy like,” Spike invited him.“Thank you,” Ben replied, looking exhausted. Spike and Xander busied themselves getting the bed ready, and turning off nearly all the lights but the one in the bathroom.“So’s you can see your way around and don’t bump into things if you need to putter around or something.” Spike said.“Thanks Spike,” Ben said with a soft, shuddering sigh.“And you’ve got a nice big garbage bag for used tissue, and two full boxes,. If you need more there’s some in the kitchen pantry, help yourself, okay?” Spike looked at him, his eyebrows quirked in concern, and reached out to hold his hand. Ben’s hands were burning hot, and Spike tried hard not to pull away.“Thanks.” He sat on the sofa bed and sighed, wiping tears as they fell, then sobbed. “I’m sorry I’m such a mess.”“It’s okay, this is a mess time, if you weren’t a mess I’d be worried,” Spike sat beside him. Suddenly Ben clung to him and started sobbing loudly. Spike held the much bigger man and rocked him, knowing Xander could hear them in his bedroom and hoped Ben didn’t mind. After a while, Ben’s huge sobs petered off to soft hiccoughs and he pulled away from Spike and wiped up his face with a tissue, blowing his nose a few times, “I’m sorry, I didn’t… I didn’t mean to just throw myself on you like that,” he whispered.“It’s okay mate, I’m here for you. You guys helped me at my worst, I’m not leaving you now. The cops will get Greg. I’m just praying it’s after he resists arrest long enough to suffer for a while.” He punched his palm and gritted his teeth, wishing again that he was still a vampire, that he could go out and mete his vengeance easily upon Greg, at his whim and desire, for however long he wished. Some things were easy to miss when you forgot the price for such ease of anger. When he remembered, he went cold and hoped no one had heard that prayer. He didn’t want to be a merciless killer again, and worse.“Yeah,” He sighed and rubed his eyes. “Do the police have any clues?”“Last we heard he was in the wind, but a guy like Greg can’t be hard to find. Told the cops the only places he hangs out. He doesn’t have much of a life, so he’s bound to turn up sooner rather than later. We’ll get our day in court, don’t worry about that, honey.” He stroked Ben’s arm gently, then squeezed his hand.“Thanks Spike, for everything… you… you saved my life. Do…,” He blinked back tears and swallowed hard several times,. This was obviously hard for him to ask. Finally he let the tears fall freely. “Can I put you as my emergency contact?” he whispered. “No one else knows what I need and don’t need and… I could easily die thanks to human medicine and… Steve used to…” He broke down, sobbing.Spike held him and rocked him, letting him cry, comforting him, until he subsided into sniffles and was blowing his nose again. “Look, whatever Steve did for you that you need someone else to do, ask us, we can probably do it for you, you can even have our names and such on a medic alert bracelet. They’ll contact us right away, okay? We’re family, the fo… three of us are a family,” Spike said softly to Ben, which made Ben turn into a sprinkler again, not a running faucet, but a sprinkler, watering his cheeks and muscular chest with drops.“Thanks Spike, you don’t know what that means to me, thank you.” He laid down on the sofa bed and sighed. “I think I’m going to go to sleep, I can’t keep my eyes open. I’ll make breakfast, okay?” He yawned loudly.“Okay Ben, thanks, you don’t have to, but thanks.”Ben was asleep almost as soon as he closed his eyes. Spike turned off the last lamp, leaving the bathroom light on and went to his room. He striped and crawled under his blanket, au naturel, and sighed. So, he’d bought a temple… so he was being stalked by a human Angelus… so his closest and dearest friends were being slaughtered. What the hell was he doing with his life when he swore he was out of the good fight? He groaned and turned over on his bed, feeling himself being dragged back in, kicking and screaming. At least Greg is human...While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
