Earlier in the evening:
Buffy’s eyes followed Xander’s departure, then Spike’s, and a helpless guilty expression took the place of anger on her face. “I haven’t earned any brownie points tonight, have I?” She sighed glumly, moved into the room and sat gingerly in Spike’s abandoned chair, slipping her hands between her thighs and hunching forward to let her hair fall over her face.
Then she snapped her head up and looked at Angel. “What happened down here to make Xander go all growly face, Angel?”
Angel twisted, turned, and finally just looked at her with a steady brooding gaze. Finally he muttered “I guess it’s just a vampire thing, Buffy." Frustrated with his inability to pinpoint the exact reason for his uncharacteristically cruel baiting of Xander. “I..I..I haven’t exactly had a ….. smooth transition in here,” raising a hand to tap his forehead. “Or in here”, moving the hand down to tap his heart, then he let his arm fall limply back to his side looking at Buffy in bewilderment.
“Then you better get busy finding a way to smooth the transition, Angel,” she replied with some acidity. “I won’t have you upsetting Xander until he leaves for good. He’s already with the vampy attitude. I don’t want to lose what's left of my Xander. My Xander is still in there even if it’s just the Xander shaped soul that I can see shining in his eyes sometimes.”
Wesley, silent until now raised a handkerchief to blot the patina of perspiration from his face. “We’re forgetting that we’re supposed to be accompanying them in case they find more trouble than they can handle themselves. Might I suggest that we follow them before they get too far ahead of us?”
Angel looked about as if Spike and Xander were hiding in the corners of the room then walked quickly to the kitchen entrance. “Oh damn. You’re right Wesley. Let’s go. Knowing Spike, they’ll be halfway across town before we catch up, and there’s no telling how much trouble there is between here and there.” His voice hung in the air as he disappeared in the direction of the tunnel door. Wesley's hands clenched into fists on his thighs; he took a deep breath, stood shakily, and as usual followed Angel with a set, grimly determined expression on his face.
Buffy watched them leave, closed her mouth trapping the words that wanted to get out, and looked sideways at Giles. He was still leaning against the doorpost, hands in his pants pockets, with a bemused look on his face, looking toward the tunnel entrance. She opened her mouth and closed it again shaking her head, and then eyebrows scrunched with puzzlement, managed finally to get the words out. “Vamp drama? Is it just me, or did that whole grrrrrrrr thing just not make any sense? Did they have an attack of Vampire PMS, or what?” she asked.
Giles smiled slightly. “The whole vampire culture is based on dominance and submission. Angel is two hundred and fifty years old, therefore the eldest of them, and Spike’s grandsire, although he does not like to acknowledge the fact. Spike resents him for that. Angelus turned Xander so therefore he subconsciously still expects a childe’s submission from Xander.” Buffy winced and looked away as Giles continued to speak. “Xander and Spike are constantly waving their unsubmissive attitude in Angel’s face, and with the recent forced merging of Angel and Angelus there may be a few more,” he paused “, well…for lack of better terms, moments of tension ahead before they work things out in a satisfactory fashion.” Giles mouth quirked into a rare grin. "I'm afraid Angel is going to have more problems adjusting than either Spike or Xander; although it is a rather unusual occurrence for two Slayers and two ex watchers to reside with three vampires in a domestic situation, for them and for us."
“Vampires,” Buffy huffed. “You can’t live with em, and ya can’t live without them. And I thought living with a bunch of girls is hard. At least they don’t go all bumpy, grow fangs and growl at the drop of a hat, then destroy the furniture.” Giles silently lifted one brow at her. “Well not literally.” She corrected.
Giles’ other eyebrow hitched up. “I hadn’t noticed much difference actually. I have been extremely tempted to try a Chirellian exorcism ritual.” Giles mused.
“Well, we won’t get anything done talking about vampires’ vs. potential slayers’ PMS. And we’re not really going to talk about female things are we?” Buffy stood and dusted her hands on her thighs vigorously as if she could dust away the conversation. “Let’s take a look at this famous tunnel. Maybe we should name it, like the Lincoln Tunnel or something.” she chattered at Giles as she walked away.
Giles coughed lightly hiding a grin behind his hand, and his eyes sparkled wickedly more like Ripper than Rupert; as he pushed off the doorpost and straightened following Buffy to the tunnel door. Buffy spun the wheel quickly and pulled hard on the door. “This thing is really heavy,” she grunted. “There’s not much that can get through it.”
“This is really quite extraordinary; whoever lived here desired a very high level of security and privacy.” Giles inspected the thickness of the open door and the locking mechanism. “This door is built the same way vault doors are built in banks or in government facilities, and notice that there is no way to open the door from the tunnel side. I didn’t look closely at the door previously, we just checked the integrity of the wards, and their power is undiminished.”
“Sooooo, you’ll be fine here guarding the door all on your ownsome then?”
“Yes, yes, I most certainly shall be quite alright.” Giles hastened to reassure. “I will remain here to watch the door just as a precaution, and to open it for you, if you come back this way. You really should be on your way if you wish to infiltrate the vineyard and find whatever it is that Caleb has, at approximately the same time Xander and his troops arrive to spy on the place. I have no doubt that they will locate the vineyard quickly with Spike and Angel’s contacts in the demon community.”
Buffy looked around one last time and ducked through the doorway. “I still feel bad about tricking them.” Buffy said as she walked backwards down the tunnel, away from the door.
“Sometimes subterfuge is necessary. If everyone knew you were going, they would want to accompany you, and it is extremely hard for a large group to sneak.” Giles offered in consolation as Buffy pulled a flashlight from her coat pocket and flicked it on to test the brightness of the beam.
“Alright then, wish me luck. I’m going. Color me gone.” She took a deep breath and turned walking away into the darkness with a circle of light that trembled slightly moving ahead of her feet. “Good luck.” Giles called as he laboriously pushed the heavy door closed with a thud that echoed. He rested his forehead on the inner surface of the door. “And be careful.” He released the wheel and stepped away looking at the door for a long moment, his face drawn with worry, as it reset itself automatically. Then he located a chair and a small table, which he placed beside the door. He prepared a cup of tea in the kitchen, pulled his private journal out of a pocket along with a pen, and sat down to write while he watched and waited.
