Turn 0 Game

“It kind of looks like a card game,” Xander said as the board appeared.

Welcome to Game Setup. These choices will define how the world works and your relationship with people before the game begins. Your actions this turn will have more impact than normal.

“Good to know,” Xander said as he looked things over. He had three actions and 250 points.

His opponent’s side of the board was fairly simple and split into two sections: enemies and rivals. On the enemies side was ‘Vampires’ while on the rivals were ‘Cordelia’ and ‘Popular Students’.

He hovered the mouse over vampires and another screen appeared describing the card:

There are always vampires in Sunnydale and more vampires will generate each turn even if completely eliminated. Vampires will attack Sunnydale each turn. Hunting vampires will reduce their overall number and the damage they do for this turn.

Vampires will not attack during setup turn.

Vampire Population: 10

Below the stats was a link for ‘hunt vampires’. Xander considered it, but with just him and Willow he wasn’t sure how much good it would do. If the vampires weren’t a danger right now he could wait to deal with them.

He moved to Cordelia next. She had the status of bitter rival and each turn she was on the rival side she would increase unaligned character dislike and party stress. The options were confrontation for 100 points, friendly for 200, and save Cordelia from a vampire for 400.

Xander’s first thought was Cordelia’s protection and he took the final option.

ERROR! You do not have enough points for that choice.

“Oops,” Xander muttered as he went back. “Okay, it’s not like she’s actually in danger from a vampire. I’m the one setting what happens. She’s only in danger if I select that. If I don’t it never happens. At least I hope.”

With that out of the way he took the friendly option. Better to get on her good side now.

“I guess I don’t learn what happened,” Xander said as he was back at the main board. He noticed that Cordelia’s card had disappeared, but otherwise things were unchanged.

He went to popular students next. Like Cordelia they hit his likability with other students and party stress. He was disappointed to learn his current standing with them was “super uncool”. There was an option to impress them, but it cost more points than he had available. He could suck up to them for just 35 points, but he didn’t like the sound of that.

The final choice was embarrass self that gained him 50 points. The description said it would hurt his standing with them, but spare his party any negative effects. He needed the points and didn’t like the idea of any of his friends being hurt, so he took that option.

“Last choice for now,” Xander said as he looked things over. He had looked at everything on his enemies side of the board, so he looked to his. There were options to “train”, “hang out”, and “study”. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to train yet, hang out looked like it reduced stress and he hoped he didn’t need that on the first turn, and he really didn’t want to study.

He looked to Willow and examined the ‘Friendzone’ affect that had been placed on her.

275: Remove friendzone from this character. They/you no longer view the relationship as ‘just friends’ and it can be progressed in a more physical direction.

“That is a ton of points,” Xander said. “I hope I get some other options to deal with it.”

Not liking the choices on his side of the board he looked to the unaligned side. There were three cards present: Tara, Fred, and Angel. He didn’t want to start dealing with Angel. Fred, he remembered her as someone from LA, though his mind now told him she was a science teacher at Sunnydale. It didn’t sound like she would be that helpful at the moment.

So he looked to Tara:

A starting witch, Tara has just begun her journey into magic. She has great potential, but is also hampered by her nervousness and uncomfortableness with social settings. She has recently moved to Sunnydale and enrolled in high-school.

Xander considered his options. If Tara was at Sunnydale then having her on his side would be really helpful, especially if she had already started magic.

Xander remembered not taking the ‘all lesbians bisexual’ option. Looking at the points required for sex and flirting made it obvious that Tara was not into guys, though he guessed it was still possible he could seduce her. He didn’t need the points from embarrassing himself more. He considered voyeur, but wasn’t quite ready to be spying on his friends, tempting though because the Game was telling him that was normal in this world.

He figured he might as well have a friendly meeting being it didn’t cost that much so he selected it.

Xander found the end turn button on the side of the screen.

As soon as he clicked it another message appeared:

Two new students have arrived, Buffy and Veruca. Please choose who you would like to meet.

“Well, this is easy,” Xander said as he selected Buffy.

How do you meet Buffy?
0: Hallway Collision: You run into her in the halls, just as happened in the prime reality.
+25 While Running Away from a Vampire: You encounter her while fleeing from a vampire.
-160 After Dispatching a Vampire: Amazingly she comes upon you right after you have successfully dusted a vamp.
+50 Mojo: Get Caught Peeping: She catches you peeping on her.

“It’d be nice to have more points,” Xander murmured. “I could impress her right off the start. I don’t want to make a bad impression, even for 25 points. Oh well, I guess we are keeping to the standard.”

Xander moved the mouse, but his eyes remained on the bottom option.

“Buffy would probably kill me if she catches me peeping on her. But didn’t I make that something that happens in this world? Damn, I wish I had made it so girls appreciated their voyeurs.”

Xander clicked the mouse and saw that he selected the link to get caught peeping.

“Buff, if you can hear me, that’s not what I meant to click on,” Xander said as things began to fade around him.
