Chapter 3 Truth Hurts
Back in Sunnydale, Willow tries to talk to Dawn about Faith.
“So you and Faith are becoming good friends.” Dawn was more than just her girlfriend’s little sister; she was like a daughter to the witch. She just felt bad that when everything that happened with Glory she wasn’t there for the teen. She was so busy with Tara and finding a way to fight Glory that she didn’t have time with Dawn.“Oh yeah we have been getting somewhat close but nothing big,” she lied. Dawn didn’t feel like she could trust Willow, at one time she loved the red head, but now she couldn’t see how Willow could tell Tara that she loved her the day before she left and then not even a week later climbing into bed with Buffy. She also couldn’t believe that Buffy could give Tara a lecture on how much everyone cares for her and then sleep with her ex-girlfriend. Dawn couldn’t trust anyone besides Faith even Xander lied to her about the two girls. Anya told her that Buffy and Willow had been together before Tara left. Of course, Dawn wasn’t sure if she could trust that information because Anya was drunk at the time.
“So how close are you getting?” Willow tried to get the teenager to talk to her.
“Hey did you know that Tara is coming home today?”
“No I didn’t know. Did you talk to her today?” Willow was lost. She didn’t know how to reach Dawn.
“You know, I think I’m going to wait and talk to her. I do have a problem but…you wouldn’t understand,” Dawn told her knowing it would hurt but she didn’t really care. Willow had always had more important things to do than pay any attention to her. She knew that the red head cared but she never had the time to show it and she still didn’t. So Dawn sure the hell wasn’t going to tell the redhead that her and Faith had been sleeping together going on three months.
“Dawn, I’ll understand. You do know I’m here for you right?”
“Right, you keep telling yourself that. Then maybe it will come true,” Dawn, snapped sarcastically.
Willow was taken aback by Dawn’s sarcastic remark “Dawn, what is wrong with you? I have always been there for you. I was there when Glory…”
“The hell you were. You didn’t care if I died you just didn’t want Glory to get the key. And you can’t say you have been there all the time because you haven’t!” Dawn yelled.
Willow stood up in haste putting her hands on her hips. “Dawn how can you say that I have always been there…” Dawn stood and matched Willow’s stance.
“You’re right Willow I’m sorry. I forgot every time I needed you to get me into a car accident you were there or the time you tried to kill me by ending the world when Tara left you the first time, oh and let’s not forget the whole forgetting who we were. Yeah, Will, you were there alright.” Dawn spat then walked out of the room leaving Willow standing with her mouth open. She didn’t know what to say. Dawn was right she hasn’t been there for her in the least.
Dawn walked down to Faith’s room not knowing why she would take the chance to let her sister and her lover find out that she did indeed love the dark slayer, but she felt safe in her lover’s room and wanted to get away from the hacker. It was a house rule never to go into Faith’s room without her permission and Dawn knew Willow would never break that rule. Dawn laid face down on the bed and began to cry. ‘What am I going to do? I can’t just let everyone know, Faith would never have it.’ She cried herself to sleep.
Willow sat in the living room waiting for the two slayers to come home. She didn’t know if Buffy knew that Tara was returning home and needed to tell her that nothing will change. They have talked about the possibility of Tara coming home and neither of them felt they could turn her away but the thought of Willow wanting her back had always scared Buffy.
***Downtown, Faith and Buffy are still fighting. “B why are you doing this I don’t know why you can’t just be happy with what you have. Do you always have to hurt everyone?” Faith spat as she took her stance in front of Buffy.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t hurt anyone…well maybe you but who cares?” Buffy said right before punching Faith in the face.
The dark slayer fell back into the wall behind her. “Buffy, you may not care about me, but I know you care about Dawn and Willow. So why are you pushing them away? What did they do?”
“Nothing!” Buffy dropped her arms to her side and slowly sat down on the sidewalk.
Faith walked over to the blond and sat next to her. “Buffy what happened? Talk to me!” Faith knew Buffy was hurting but she didn’t know why. She also seen from the time she came back that the older slayer was pushing everyone away.
Buffy looked the younger girl in the eyes and let the tears fall that she was holding back. “I don’t want to fight anymore…can we just go home and forget about this?”
“B, if we forget about it then it will never go away. We need to work this out, but all of us not just you and me. Buffy you know that I’m right and you know this isn’t going to go away on its own. So yes, we can go home but when we get there we all need to work this out before Tara gets here.” Faith stood up offering her hand to the older girl and smiled when Buffy took her hand.
They walked down the street in silence when Faith’s words registered in Buffy’s mind. Pulling them to a stop the blond looked at the younger girl. “Did you say Tara was coming back?”
Faith thought for a second and nodded her head. “Yes, she called today and told Dawn that she was in LA. She told Dawn that she was going to call Angel because she had a layover. Dawn said that she should be here tonight.” Faith looked down at her watch. “Well she should be leaving soon so we should get home and get ready for her.”
Buffy stood in complete silence staring at the younger girl. Shaking her head to get her mind to work again. “Faith we should run, jog, maybe even get up and go. If Tara gets back to the house before I can tell Willow then all hell is going to break loose…Tara doesn’t know about us.”
Faith again thought for a second and then smiled. “Oh yeah I remember now! She was with Red…” She thought a little harder and her eyes went wide. “Oh this can’t be good…okay B run!”
***
Back in the hotel Angel and Tara sat in his office talking about Tara’s return to home and why she felt this was the right time to return to the place that scared her so much.“Angel it isn’t that Sunnydale scares me…well yes it does but it’s more of what everyone will say about me leaving and, even worse, coming back.” Tara told the older man that sat across from her. In the short time that she talked with Angel she had come to see the vampire as a man and not a demon in a man suit. She felt like she could tell him just about anything and he would understand. “I’m scared that they will turn their backs on me and I will have to leave again.”
Angel sat and listened to her and knew exactly what she was saying but he also knew that if she turned back now that she would never know what they really thought and would regret it for the rest of her life. “You have to face the demons that stand before you and learn the best way to battle them. If you walk away now then your life will be full of regret. If you don’t go back then you’ll never know that they love you and will forgive you,” he told the girl.
“Life imitating work” Tara looked down at her hands folded in her lap. “Or they hate me and will never forgive me. Then it could be that I’m not sure if I can forgive them. I really don’t have a problem seeing Buffy and Willow together, it’s just I knew before I left about them and they never told me. They just acted like everything was great and the whole time they were sneaking around behind my back and poorly at that,” she said with a tight lump in her throat.
“Tara, you know that is always a chance but that is the chance you have to take…have they ever turned their backs on you before for something you have done?” he asked almost as an afterthought. “I know it’s hard to be cheated on and to see them together is going to be hard to but you have to look beyond that to see what you’re really looking for. You have a family back there that does care about you or Willow would have never sent this picture of you for me to have. She thought you would come here and asked me to look for you.” He showed her the picture that Willow sent.
“No,” she said with a tear falling down her face when she thought of the time she made them blind to all demons to hide from them. “I just want to go home, but like I told the green guy I don’t know where home is.” She told Angel hoping he would understand.
“Then why now…isn’t home where your heart is?” Angel walked around his desk to Tara and knelt down before her. “You have to do this Tara. You have to put Willow and Buffy behind you and go on with your life if it’s in Sunnydale with friends and family or somewhere else alone. You feel the pain now and it hurts but not knowing will hurt even worse. I can’t do this for you and you can’t expect them to come to you. They have given you the space you needed. Now it’s time to pay the piper,” he took her hand as he spoke to her.
Tara looked up with a small smile “I know it’s time but do I have to sound like a nursery rhyme?” She tightens her grip on his hand and laughed.
“No but it might be fun in the long run,” Angel laughed. “Okay, all joking aside. I think it’s time to get you to the bus station. You have about 30 minutes to wait after we get you there.” He pulled Tara to her feet pulling her in to a tight embrace. “You’re going to be just fine and if for any reason you have to leave again you’ll always have a place here with us!” he told the girl in his arms.
*** Dawn had woken up and returned up to the living room without saying a word to Willow. The witch was about to speak when Buffy and Faith ran into the house almost out of breath. They both collapse on the couch trying to catch a much-needed breath before they can speak.Willow and Dawn watch this display of dramatics with a look of worry. “What’s wrong with you two?” Dawn asks.
Buffy breathing hard and looks at Faith for the answer. “Tara is coming home soon and we ran all the way home to get ready for her,” she told the two girls standing in front of them.
Dawn walked over to her girlfriend and smiled down at her. “I know she’s coming so you didn’t have to run, Faith. I would’ve taken care of everything.” She placed her hand on the dark slayer’s knee.
Buffy looked at the display of affection and rolled her eyes. There wasn’t anything she could do to stop them getting together and she didn’t know if she wanted to. “Faith, we ran all the way home and Dawn would have taken care of everything.” She pointed at her sister with a sarcastic smirk.
The three of them laughed and talked about what they were going to do when she arrived. “You know I’m going to meet her as me this time. Last time I was you B,” Faith laughed as Buffy gave her a dirty look.
Willow stood against the walk to keep herself upright. Tears filled her eyes as she thought of the girl that left her so long ago, breaking her heart. “Tara,” was all she could say as she slid down the wall to the floor.
“Oh Willow!” Buffy ran to her side. She was so excited about the blonde coming home that she had forgotten about how Willow would feel about it.
Dawn looked over to the red head on the floor and then looked back at Faith. She didn’t know how to handle this. So she walked towards Willow and Buffy but instead of going to them she walked past to the stairs and disappeared up them.
Willow looked at Faith and let the tears fall. “Tara,” was all she could say. Her heart was breaking again. This was not going to be easy and she didn’t want to be here to deal with Dawn hating her and Tara coming home.
