“Uh, okay, sure. I can stay,” Faith answered. She pulled Willow’s desk chair over and sat down near Willow’s bed. The girls sat in awkward silence for a few minutes. “Do you want me to call your parents and tell them what happened?” Faith asked, relieved to finally break the heavy silence. “No thanks, Faith . They are probably half way around the world and…” Tears sprang to Willow’s eyes. “What’s the matter Red? Are you in pain? Do you want more medication?” Faith jumped out of the chair and moved closer to Willow’s bed. “No, Faith, I’m ok, it’s just that I got some bad news last week and…never mind it’s really not that important and I don’t want to bother you with my problems,” Willow leaned back into the pillow and closed her eyes, but the tears continued to flow. Wow, thought Faith, I’ve never seen Willow like this. Faith sat down on the bed unsure of what to do next. Impulsively she reaches over and wipes away a tear that was about to slide down Willow’s face. Willow opens her eyes and whispers, “I am so sorry Faith. We barely even speak to each other and here you are taking care of me. I’ve been so hard on you. I’m so sorry.” With the last word Willow reaches over and intertwines her fingers in Faith’s. Willow turns her head towards the wall and sighs. The girls sit in a more comfortable silence, holding hands. Faith subconsciously begins to rub her thumb back and forth over Willow’s hand. She can feel sadness coming off Willow in waves. She remembers how patient Tara was with her when Faith had first starting talking about her past. Jesus tare, I wish you’re here today.
“Faith, can I ask you something personal?” Willow asks tentatively. Faith nods her head. “You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but are your parents alive?” Faith took a minute to regroup. None of the scoobies had ever asked about her parents. Sure they all knew she had come from a shitty upbringing, but it was like a don’t ask, don’t tell kinda scenerio. Faith decided that honesty would probably be the best idea. “My dad died in a robbery gone bad when I was 3. I really don’t remember him. My mom died the day after I killed Finch.” Faith laughed bitterly, “ I thought it was the powers that be fuckin’ with me. Punishing me for what I had done. She was pretty shitty to me, but she was my mom, you know? I think it was the straw that broke the camels back. When the mayor took me under his wing I felt like I had a parent again. It felt good. I never told any one because-well, because I was a wreck. No one could have helped me back then. I was hell bent on destroying myself. So to answer your question, I guess I’m an orphan.”
