Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Chapter 3
Spike drove round the corner and came to a screeching halt next to the footpath outside Sunnydale Memorial. He glanced over at the other two occupants of the car; they already looked wrecked and they hadn’t even got to the hard part yet. “Okay so we get in, grab Joyce then get the hell out of here, okay?” He asked, jolting Xander out of his thoughts.
“Right, we can do this,” Xander remarked almost to himself as he climbed out of the car. “C’mon Wills.” He called over his shoulder to the silent Red Haired Witch. The three Scoobies quickly made their way to the big swinging doors of the hospital forcing themselves not to run, as they did not want to draw attention. The last thing they needed was inquisitive staff demanding to know why they were carrying off an obviously sick woman. Inside the surgery ward the trio frantically searched around trying to figure out where Joyce’s room was, as they knew they did not have enough time to talk to the nurses.
“Willow! Xander!” As one they turned to the smiling young man who walked along a passage towards them.
“Riley, quick. Where’s Joyce’s room?” Spike demanded of the solider. Riley’s smile faltered as he took in the dried tear tracks on their faces and their grim expressions.
“It’s back down that hall third on the left. What’s wrong? Where’s Buffy?” Willow bit her lip to keep herself from crying again at Riley’s innocent reminder of her friend’s death.
“We’ll explain when we are with Joyce, it’s quicker if we tell you both at the same time and I don’t want to talk about it more than I have to,” Xander responded, not wanting to have to think about Buffy and Giles’s deaths. All he wanted was to be curled up in bed with his two lovers, just feeling them next to him.
Riley wasn’t satisfied with their answer, he was fed up with being left out of the loop but before he could make an argument out of it Spike spoke. “Come on,” he took off with Xander and Willow right behind him. Riley needed to stretch out his long legs in order to keep up. ‘What’s the rush?’ he wondered. Spike slammed through the door into Joyce’s room, the others right on his heels. Xander pushed the door shut and grabbed the crossbow Spike had smuggled in under his coat.
“Riley? Willow? Boys? What’s going on?” asked the quiet but still strong voice from the bed in the middle of the Spartan room.
“Sorry to barge in like this Mrs. Summers but it’s not safe. We need to get you out of here” answered Xander.
“Is there an emergency? Where are my daughters? And Mr. Giles?” Willow burst into tears at the reminder that Joyce didn’t know the tragic events of the last couple of hours.
“What’s wrong? Where are my daughters?” Joyce asked again in that steely tone of hers that always meant she was going to accept nothing but the truth.
“Dawn is fine. She’s with Anya and Tara and they have already fled Sunnydale which is what we should be doing,” Spike responded as Xander hugged Willow to him. Spike wished that his response would be enough to pacify Joyce but knew that he didn’t have a chance in hell.
“William. What happened to Buffy? Do not try to humour an old woman. I need to know.” Joyce demanded feeling her stomach fall. The only reason her eldest born would not be here is if she was captured or worse.
“I’m sorry Joyce. I really am. You should be proud of her though. Not many slayers survived as long as she did,” Spike reluctantly answered in a small voice. Joyce fell back onto the bed as if all her energy had left her.
“And what…what about Rupert?” Joyce finally managed to ask.
“He stalled them long enough for us to get away. Look Joyce. I’m sorry I really am but we have to go now, they can’t be far behind and you’re coming with us.” Joyce took one look at Spike and realised that she could not fight him on this. She was going with them.
“Gone…She’s gone.” Everyone was woken from their own thoughts by Riley’s disbelieving voice. Xander had almost forgotten that Riley was there and the next minute surprised him no end. Spike walked over to the grieving man and pulled him into a hug. The two embraced men’s hate for each other was legendary but here was this strange scene of Spike giving comfort to Riley and Riley wasn’t pushing him away.
“C’mon mate. Use that soldier training you’ve got. I need you to be here and not lost in thoughts. We will probably need your help in escaping Sunnyhell.” Riley nodded into Spike’s shoulder and then the two men released each other. Xander and Willow also let go of each other and Xander went to check the coast was clear while Willow carefully pulled the drip out of Joyce’s arm. Spike strode to the bed and helped Joyce until he was carrying her.
“All clear.” Xander called out from his post at the door, still clutching the crossbow.
“Okay everybody; let’s get the hell out of here.” Spike said before they opened the door and stepped out into the hospital.

The troop of Scoobies unconsciously sped up as they drew closer to the door. As they passed the nurses station the entire building shook and then a furious shriek was heard from the direction of Joyce’s room. They sped up but suddenly out of a side passage in front of them Glory appeared.
“Stop, stop... don’t let the… the…” She clicked her fingers and Willow noticed that she didn’t look as perfectly made up as she did when she brought some things from the Magic Box earlier.
“Don’t let the Slayer’s friends escape, my deliciousness?” asked a minion.
“Yes, that.” Snapped Glory as she slowly slid to the ground, her skin clammy and pale, she began to pull her hair out while panting attempting to get some breath into her lungs.
“The Great One needs to feed.” The lead minion pointed out. The Scoobies had been desperately searching for an escape route while the exchange continued. Unfortunately there only hope was to get to the car and Glory was in between them and it. Spike knew they would have to rush her while she was down with whatever was plaguing her now unfortunately not everyone was going to be able to get past. Before Spike could say something Riley grabbed Xander’s crossbow and addressed them all.
“Run and whatever you do don’t look back. The army was my life for so long, but then I found out that was a lie, so Buffy became my life. Now she’s dead and I have no reason for existing but I know she’d want you to survive so I’m going to give you this chance.” Riley noticed the ugly minions standing up and he stepped towards them. “RUN NOW” he yelled and sped straight towards the bitch who took his life. Spike while carrying Joyce with one arm pushed Xander and Willow in front of him and sped towards the door. This was there one chance of getting free and he was grateful to Riley for giving them the opportunity to escape. They rushed through the minions and one made a grab for Joyce but Xander managed to bash it over the head with the phone from the nurse’s station before taking off again. Willow noticed that the arrows from Riley’s bow bounced off Glory ineffectively before she sped past. They all cringed as they heard a cut off scream from Riley but did not turn back as they slammed through the front doors out into the night. Willow quickly turned around and mumbled a spell. There was a flash and then a blue transparent barrier spanned the doorway. Willow hoped that would hold Glory for a little while.
Xander raced to the car and tried not to think of how they have lost a third member of the Scooby gang in the one night. He opened the back passenger door before opening his own and hopping inside so that it would be easier for Spike to place Joyce in the car before getting into the drivers seat.
Joyce manoeuvred into the car already exhausted but prepared to push herself to the limits in order to stop the other occupants of the car worrying about her. They had enough to worry about at the present time without adding a sick old woman to the list. “What was the magic you did back there Willow?” she asked to stop herself from thinking while Spike took off from the curb.
“It was a barrier spell. Hopefully it will keep her busy for a little while but I’m not sure she seems to shrug off anything we hit her with.” Willow replied. “Are we being followed?” She asked as they careened around a corner at high speed, and she battled to not fall on top of Joyce and all the luggage strewn across the back of the car.
“Not at the moment but I want to put as much distance between us and Sunnydale as quickly as possible.” Spike explained as they raced around another corner onto the highway.
“Ouch!” exclaimed Willow as she was hit by a loose bag that was thrown by the sharp turn. “Why is all your stuff in here anyway? Didn’t you just get home and unpacked? Where are we going anyway?” She asked the two figures in the front. Xander cringed at the question; this really wasn’t the time to answer it when they are stuck in a car escaping from a super-strong, deadly nutter.
“Well…um. This is what we wanted to talk to you all about earlier in the Magic Box.” Xander began unsure of how to continue, he didn’t want to aggravate the already tense situation by telling them about Angel and the move.
“Come on Xander, spit it out.” Willow demanded breaking through Xander’s thoughts. She was concerned about what this news could be. ‘Has Spike removed his chip?’ she thought. Suddenly the Scooby-Doo theme song could be heard in the car causing the on-edge occupants to jump.
“That’s my phone. Can someone find it please?” Xander asked, having no idea where it was. He hoped that they would hand it to him before answering because he knew it would be a distraught Angel seeking reassurance that his current lovers were physically fine, if not emotionally.
“Found it,” called out Joyce but before he could ask her to give it to him she answered it and immediately turned it on to speakerphone. “Hello,” She answered.
“Joyce?” Angel’s surprised voice was heard asking. “Where’s Xander and Spike?”
“We’re here Peaches and we’re fine for the moment, we also have Joyce and Willow in the car and you’re on speaker phone.” Answered Spike hoping he could clue in his usually clueless Sire into the fact that Willow and Joyce still didn’t know about the three of them.
“Wait a minute. Angel, how did you know that something was happening?” Willow asked, her natural inquisitiveness getting the better of her.
“That’s where we are going. I gave Anya instructions to ring him once they were on the freeway even though they didn’t know they were ringing Angel.” Spike explained.
“Anyway, Spike, what the hell is happening? They just told me what happened to B…” Angel sighed, “to Buffy and said they have no idea who did this. I have been trying to ring you for the last half an hour and going out of my mind with worry when nobody answered. Cordelia was getting ready to hit me.”
“Sorry Angel that was my fault, they were rescuing me from the hospital.” Joyce told him but before she could work out a way to tell him about Riley, Angel spoke again.
“You were in hospital? Do you need anything? I might be able to find you a discrete doctor. Is there anything else any of you need when you arrive, and where is Giles? I need to discuss with him anything he knows and where he has looked so Wes knows which books in our library to concentrate on.” Joyce collapsed back into the seat, she was just too exhausted to try and pretend that everything was peachy. After what the doctor told her earlier today she really shouldn’t be out of the hospital until they could find out if they could operate on the tumour and so any medical help Angel could give her she would take no questions asked. Dawn would need her mother and she could not let her now only daughter down.
“A…Angel.” Xander managed to stammer out. He wanted to tell the vampire what he meant to Xander and how he just wanted to be in his cool embrace where the three of them could hide under the covers until the danger passed, but that was not an option.
“Xander? What’s wrong?” Angel asked.
“We ran into trouble after the others left.”
“What? Xander are you okay?” The fear and worry could plainly be heard in Angel’s voice. “Spike, tell me he’s alright?”
“Clam down, luv. He’s fine; I’d never let anything happen to him. What Xan’s trying to say is that the Watcher’s dead. He brought us enough time to escape from the Magic Box by sacrificing his own life. I’m pretty sure that bitch Glory killed Riley too after he stalled her while we fled from the hospital. That is the only thing that we know, she’s called Glory and she’s a super strong bitch.” Spike told Angel while he drove down the road like a bat out of hell.
“Glory, right I’ll remember…”
“FUCK!” swore Spike, cutting Angel off.
“Oh Shit!” exclaimed Xander as he watched a spear fly over the car.
“Alexander LaVelle Harris,” scolded Willow.
“Sorry Wills, but you should look behind us,” Xander explained.
“Oh, Goddess!” Willow exclaimed softly when she saw what the problem was.
“WHAT! What the Hell is Happening?” roared Angel through the phone, concerned about his lovers’ safety.
“We are being attacked by the Renaissance Fair,” Xander answered as he grabbed the crossbow Willow held out to him.
“Glory?”
“No Angel. I don’t think so, I can’t see her or her scabby minions and I haven’t seen these guys before.” Willow replied, winding down her window and aiming her crossbow through it.
“I think there human,” Xander added as he watched his bolt slide into one of the knight types who weren’t wearing amour and was riding a horse. The knight slid off his steed and Xander could clearly see red blood.
“Spike, can you please get us out of here?” Joyce asked as a bolt smashed through the back window and embedded itself into the upholstery in front of her.
“I’m working on it.” Spike retorted, swerving the car from side to side.
“Spike, how can I aim when… Arrrrrgh!” Xander’s sentence was cut off by a knight’s arrow piercing through his lower arm.
“Shit Xander.” The expletive fell out of Willow’s mouth as she attempted to reach out towards her best friend. Xander moved to pull out the foreign object when Spike interrupted him.
“Xan, DON’T! Leave it in til we can deal with it properly otherwise it will bleed too much.” Spike instructed his lover.
“Here Xander turn around, I’ll bandage it for you. I did a first aid course once.” Xander turned to Joyce as she tore a shirt she found for bandages.
“Xander are you okay?” Angel asked wishing he was there with them but knowing that he was powerless to do anything. If only Cordelia had had a vision.
“I’m as fine as I can be with a crossbow bolt through my arm; just make sure Cordelia is ready when I get there.” Xander couldn’t be happier than now that his ex had completed an emergency first aid course last month. “Spike look out!”
“I know Xan, I can see them!”
“What?” Angel again asked wishing he could at least see what was happening.
“Horse and person barricade in front of us. The only hope is if we ram through them but with the chip, the only hope is if I…”
“I’m here for you Spike,” Angel replied hearing the fear and determination in Spike’s voice as he contemplated doing the incredibly risky in order to protect his lover and friends in the car.
“Thankyou Sire, I’ll need you.”
“I’ll be waiting for you William. Xander, Joyce and Willow don’t talk to Spike for the rest of the trip he is going to need all of his concentration to get you here. I’ll be waiting and have everything prepared for your arrival.” Angel hung up the phone. His head dropped into his hands as he prayed to anything that could hear him that they would make it through this.
