A/N Sorry for the delay, holydays were in the way. Chapter 5 is due for the end of August.
4. Lie to me.
They were sitting on the sofa in his suite and only a glass door stood between them and the bedroom. This was enough to drive Kate’s senses crazy. She sank her hands deeper in Angel’s hair and kissed him more passionately, sitting astride him.
She…God, she never behaved like this…other men she dated had always complained she was too cold and closed…yeah, but Angel was different from them…oh yes!
Their first kiss…outside the restaurant, to greet each other. He was so tall and big and he had let her kiss him without asking for anything else, returning her kiss with a slow and masculine sensuality that immediately seduced…and enlightened her.
Yeah, my God, that was the difference. He lit a fire inside her, where she had always been sure there was only ice.
Excited, she tried to unbutton his shirt, but Angel stopped her, laying her down under him and slipping a hand into her panties. Kate moaned, satisfied, as she caressed his back and continued to kiss him passionately, pressing against his- oh God, so evident- erection…yeah, it was the right time, she wanted it. She couldn’t resist any longer.
Then, in a second, the door opened and Cordelia flounced into the room, shaking a spray can. “You’re a mess! You’ve blocked up the nozzle of my hair mousse…” she said – and then she stopped, dumbfounded, opening her eyes wide, amazed.
Angel, shocked, sat up immediately and in the middle of the embarrassed silence, the sound of Kate’s panty elastic echoed like a gunshot.
Kate hurriedly assumed a composed position, pulling her dress down over her knees.
“Uh… wow…”Cordelia mumbled. “This place is so big that…I didn’t realise you had a guest…” she couldn’t say another word when she noticed Angel’s trousers.
He picked up a pillow, putting it over his fly, smiling. “Mm…Cordelia, this is Kate…she is…”
Tick tock, tick tock…a grandfather clock. Shit…he didn’t remember having one…
“Your girlfriend?” added Cordelia helpfully.
“Yes” Kate answered, a little too promptly. Her blue eyes were looking suspiciously at this girl with a too-short mini skirt and…God…an amazing pair of legs.
“Well.. yeah…” answered Angel, a bit less sure. “Kate, this is Cordelia…my…”
Panic. And again tick tock, tick tock…that bloody clock…
“Secretary?” Cordelia helped again.
“Oh, of course!” Kate said, more relaxed. “You help him in the lab…”
Angel and Cordelia both frowned, looking at each other in puzzlement; then the vampire remembered. Of course, it was one of the lies he had told her, in the face of her shining beauty, immediately forgotten…”Well, you know…I told her about my job as a veterinarian…”
Cordelia almost crushed the spray can in her efforts to stop herself laughing out loud. She gave a professional smile. “Angel is a veterinarian, yes, with a capital V. You should see him with pets…especially ones with fangs.”
Kate nodded, teasing her swollen lips with her teeth. “And you must live here too, I guess…”
“She doesn’t… not like…” Angel began to justify…
“Yes” Cordelia stopped him. “It’s because…well, my dad was arrested for tax avoidance, you know? And so…bang! House, clothes and credit cards, all gone in a matter of days! I came to LA with no money at all…and destiny led me to meet this holy man, who was looking for a secretary!” She laughed. No, wait, a loud laugh would show that she was nervous…she cleared her throat. “And since he was living in this big Transylvanian house he offered me a room until I can find my own apartment…” She shook the spray can against the sofa. “He’s a hero, our Angel!”
“Yeah…I believe it…” Kate whispered. She was looking at the vampire, staring at his mouth, to be honest. As if it was a fruit ready to be eaten…
Cordelia felt the temperature rising around them all and she moved over to the door. “Well…I should be going now…”
Blocked by Kate’s evident desire, Angel held tight to the pillow. Tick tock….tick tock…oh, he would look for that clock…and he would take care of it!
“Surgery!” he almost shouted. “I completely forgot…We have to get ready for surgery…”
He looked at Cordelia desperately. “You know, the surgery…”
She immediately got it. “That’s right! The…chow-chow surgery!” She talked to Kate. “It’s a kind of dog…”
“I know” the other stated.
Thank God I can’t blush, Angel thought. He took Kate’s hands. “I’m sorry…I was so impatient to see you that…I forgot…I’m so sorry”.
“It will be difficult” Cordelia confirmed. “An open-heart operation” She sighed sadly. “Poor dog”
“So it would be better if I go…”said Kate, taking her jacket and bag from the floor. “I have a big day tomorrow too”
“I’m sorry…” Angel said. And he really was. For that dreadful sad cabaret sketch. God, this wonderful woman didn’t deserve all those lies…
She bent to his face, caressing his cheek. “You shouldn’t be. I enjoyed everything…” She kissed him fast, exploring his sweet tongue. “You don’t need to take me home…I’ll call you tomorrow, ok? So you can tell me how it went with the chow-chow…” She rubbed her lips against his.
“Goodnight”.
When she turned, Cordelia was examining her split ends. They smiled and nodded at each other politely, than Kate went left the room, walking shakily.
Cordelia looked at Angel, fluttering her eyelashes innocently. He still held the pillow, his hair was mussed up by her caresses and his lips were still wet with her kisses. He was definitely so cute!
“I’m sorry boss…but she could have stayed, I was leaving anyway”
“No, it’s better this way. I was losing control”
“And what’s wrong with that? She looked like she was into it” She laughed softly.
“She really was into it!” Angel shook his head. “But I can’t make love to Kate…”
“You can’t?...Oh…” She scowled.
Angel didn’t understand immediately. “No! Not like that!” He pointed at the pillow. “It’s obvious that I can!”
“Uh…sorry…”
“The point is that…if we become too intimate Kate will discover a little detail….”
“Oh Angel…size isn’t so important…”
He goggled and Cordelia shut up. “Got it, sorry again. You weren’t talking about size.”
“No, I was talking about my heart”. Angel stared at her. “Remember, it doesn’t beat”
“Oh…you’re right…you haven’t let her touch your chest yet, uh?”
“No. If she does, she will notice. And it will happen if we continue like that”. The vampire touched his face with a hand. “I’m so close to the breaking point…”
“You really like her” Cordelia said sweetly. “So tell her the truth. I know your heart doesn’t beat but I’m still here. I didn’t run away”.
“You’re different…I mean, Kate is different. She lives in a town full of demons and she doesn’t realize anything. She doesn’t know what surrounds her. And that’s not so strange. She doesn’t want to see. Like almost everybody. Like the mother of…well…” Angel hesitated.
“Yeah…her mother…” Cordelia replied, cold.
“Mhm…Joyce Summers entertained two vampires in her dining room without even suspecting. And day after day she washed the bloody, torn clothes of her little girl, without asking herself a single question. Even living on the Hellmouth…No, I can’t tell Kate. It would mess up her life, all her beliefs…”. Angry, he punched the sofa cushion. “I shouldn’t even have begun this relationship. I knew that from the beginning and I didn’t stop myself…”
Cordelia came closer, serious. “Why?”
“Why?” He opened his arms. “Because I’m an idiot, maybe? An egotistical bastard?”
“Uhm…no…I think you just need kisses, warmth, tenderness, someone who looks at you like they could eat you, a voice on the telephone arranging a date…just like all of us common, romantic mortals…”
Did he see affection in her smile? And did he deserve it?
Angel wasn’t sure about that. But he felt better anyway. It was a pity that… “Maybe it’s like that, Cordy…” he admitted. “Maybe I want all of that stuff…But the truth is that I may look like a man, walk like a man, but I’m not”.
“Ok…ok…of course you’re not a man”, Cordelia surrendered. “You’re a veterinarian…” She laughed suddenly. “Oh God, why on earth did you choose that?”
“And you?” he replied, smiling. “That chow-chow?”
“A friend of mine used to have one. I hated that dog and it hated me as well. I’ve always hoped it had open-heart surgery…” as she left the room she turned to Angel, thinking to herself he was the manliest not-man she had ever known. “You should do it more often” she advised.
“What?” Angel asked. “Lie?”
“No, idiot! Smile! You’re so handsome, when you smile…” she winked at him and disappeared down the corridor, spray can in hand, with that great, uncontrollable joy. For God’s sake, that was Queen C.
Tick…tock…tick…tock…Angel threw away the pillow. It was time to take care of that clock.
“Hey! Wait a minute! What’s that?”
The waitress of the snack-bar flopped on the bench beside her, forgetting her orders for a while.
She was a huge woman, around 40, and she looked nice, with her name, Lily, embroidered on her uniform. Kate had known her a long time and every time they met, it seemed like a scene from a 70’s TV series. But it was fun talking to her, and it was really close to the Police Department precinct building: the best place to take a break from her work.
“That what Lily? And, by the way feel free to sit down, no problem…”
The woman pointed at her neck. “It’s a hickey! And it’s as big as a house!”
Kate blushed, instinctively pulling up the jacket’s collar. What an idiot…she hadn’t noticed it!
Lily was staring at her. “Is it that guy? That veterinarian you met while you were hunting the singles serial killer?”
“Yeah…”She nodded. “A good example of professionalism, uh? I was there for work and the first pair of dark eyes were enough to make me go haywire”
“Ah-ha…”
“Ah-ha? Ah-ha what?”
“You’re avoiding my question” Lily replied. “It means that I’m right. What’s he like? Tell me! He has to be a special one if you allowed him to…” she pointed at the hickey. “…come so close”.
“Why? What am I? The ice queen?”
“No darling!” Lily smiled. “But…be honest…You have been coming here for a long time and until now your neck has always been as white as a lily…and how many men you met have lasted more than two dates?”
God, maybe I’ve told too many things to this woman, Kate thought…But it was so easy. Day after day. Opening her heart to that common face passing through her daily existence. An existence full of walls and gates.
That Angel broke with a single blow.
“Well, he’s…” Kate was glowing. “Handsome. And sweet. Sexy…” She rolled her eyes, sighing.
“Expert…I totally lose control when we’re together. It’s never happened to me before. Never.”
“And isn’t that wonderful?” Lily said.
They laughed, knowingly. “Yeah…” Kate confirmed, fiddling with the hair that was coming loose from her pony-tail. “It’s worse, I think…I think…I’m in love with him. I mean…if it isn’t love…God it’s almost it…”
“And this lucky man knows that?”
“No! He…he doesn’t even know I’m a policeman…I couldn’t tell him…”
Lily opened her eyes. “Oh, that’s weird! And why not? What’s wrong with being a policeman?”
“Nothing…but other men were always worried about that…” Kate frowned, remembering. “They felt disturbed…and him…I’m really scared to tell him…everything’s just so fine between us…”
“Ah, sweetie, how complicated you are…” the waitress sighed, standing up to serve a client. “Wait till you’ve been married 20 years like me and you’ll discover how stupid these fears were…” She gave her a tweak on the cheek. “If he’s so special, go on, darling. Open your arms and fly. The worst that can happen is you’ll fall. And believe me: you won’t die from it”.
She went away, tidying up her curly hair, and Kate stirred her cold coffee. Maybe she could. Maybe, falling down, she could die.
Because Angel took her bloody, really bloody high.
In that part of the town, maybe due to the high concentration of pubs and clubs, there were a lot of young vampires: the most dangerous ones. They killed a lot, and badly, causing a real mess sometimes. Better to erase some of them, to clear the mind. And Angel’s mind had real chaos in it.
Wise Cordelia’s advice was warring with the sweet, hot way Kate kissed him. The knowledge that to tell her the truth was the most reasonable thing to do disappeared in front of her spontaneous trust and her blue eyes, full of right, human and normal expectations. Kate believed she was dating a veterinarian, and in reality he was a two hundred and fifty year old vampire..
Hell, he was in a real mess…No! Spike had got him into a real mess! Him and his bloody stupid idea to commemorate their souls…
While he thought about vengeance, a car drew up to the sidewalk. “Hey, stranger…”
Angel bent. “Kate…”
She was dressed differently: a pair of jeans, t-shirt and jacket, her hair was tied back in a pony-tail. She was also more beautiful, like that.
“I recognised you” She told him, inviting him to get in the car. “You’re unique…”
“What are you doing around here so late at night?” they asked each other, smiling. In the small space, their bodies were almost touching.
“You first” said Kate, starting the car.
“I stayed all day long in the lab and I wanted a bit of fresh air…” Angel lied. “And you?”
“I…I’m on my way home from work just now” Kate answered, vague.
“Curious…” Angel stared at her. She looked nervous. “I still don’t know what your job is…”
Suddenly, she turned into a dark dead-end road, shutting off the engine.
She held the wheel so tight her knuckles turned white.
Angel touched her shoulder. “Hey…are you ok?”
Kate jumped and looked at him with her crystal eyes, bigger than ever, full of a passion she couldn’t stand anymore. “I don’t want to talk about my job…” she whispered, breathless. “I don’t wanna talk at all…”
Still staring at him, she reclined her seat, untying her hair and pulling off her jacket, then she lay down, opening her jeans and sliding them down over her hips. Without a word, without asking anything, with a unique and continuous question in her eyes.
Immobile, his muscles tensed as if sensing an attack, Angel realized that the point of no return had been already reached. Bridges burned. And he could only let go, and burn to ashes in the end.
The silence was full of electricity and waiting, of Kate’s rhythmic breath…Angel pulled her jeans down to her ankles and hesitated in front of her simple white cotton panties, easing them down her hips. Her skin was hot, burning, but shivering. And she was a natural blonde.
That detail brought back to him Darla and the times when sex was a game, power, hunting…and the so evident contrast between that and the overwhelming emotions he felt in that moment broke every hesitation or reticence he had left.
Yes, it was fair. And beautiful. Kate wanted it. And he wanted Kate. No suffering. No death or blood. Only a woman and a man who wanted each other and desperately wanted to show it to each other.
He lay over her body, caressing her shirt and her bra: he noticed a little golden cross between her breasts and Angel’s eyes for a second turned from black to yellow, giving him a vague pain he found…God…oh – so - exciting…
Kate felt him swelling against her naked body and she moaned, feeling his clothes, his leather jacket against her nipples: she opened her legs and moved under him, begging for satisfaction. Shaking, she helped him off with his trousers and she held his naked buttocks, pulling him towards her, inside her, while he put his fingers into her damp blonde hair, looking for the way to go.
A first push. And the second. Their lips and foreheads were almost touching. And the pushes became stronger and stronger, fast, convulsed. The spasmodic contraction of a heart near to collapse. The orgasm came immediately for Kate and her pupils dilated, darkening the blue of the iris: her face was against Angel’s neck and she felt the leather of his jacket caressing her cheek. His musky scent was in her veins, mixed with a violent and unknown pleasure.
Angel came immediately after her, putting his head between her breasts, turning for a few, endless seconds…staring at the cross.
Thinking that he had never felt such a pleasant punishment.
“We have been a bit impulsive…” she whispered, afterwards. “We should have taken precautions….” She held him, her chin on his hair, her hands on his back and her legs around his hips. Only holding him so tight, she could believe it had really happened.
“Don’t worry, I don’t have any infections.” Angel reassured her. “And I can’t have children”
“No?”
“I’m sterile”
“I’m sorry” she whispered.
“I’ve known for a long time”. Angel sat up on the passenger seat, putting on his trousers.
She imitated him immediately, with a sudden, dreadful feeling of coldness. How could that be possible? She felt on fire!
“Maybe…well…maybe we should talk…” Why didn’t he look at her?
“Kate…”
Now, yes. Now he was looking at her and his black eyes, in the dark of the car, were impenetrable mirrors of darkness.
“You…you didn’t like me?” she asked him, in a soft voice. If he nodded, she would die for sure.
Angel put his hand on her face, touching her lip with his thumb. She still had the signs of their fast and intense orgasm on her white skin…she was glowing. “Oh, Kate…I liked you…You don’t even know how much…But you…You deserve more than a seat in a car and a uncomfortable position…” his finger on her lip moved, more sensual and resolute. “We can have much more than that…”
“And we’ll have it…will we, Angel?” she asked, warming his fingers with her breath.
He didn’t answer. He smiled. A smile that broke the darkness. And entered deep into her heart.
“Will you kiss me?” Kate bent. “I need a kiss…”
The kiss was long, and like a thick and sweet river it took Kate and she drowned in it, losing herself. “Angel, I think I…” she gasped on his mouth. “I…”
“Kate…” Angel shook his head. “Let’s take it step by step. We’ll talk about serious things later. A car in an alley, it’s not the right place…”
She nodded. And loved him more for his common sense.
“I…I think I’ll walk home…” he sighed. “It’s better, before we go too far…” He hoped he was believable. He kissed her again, leaving her smiling and hot.
Happy.
He waited till the car was far enough away, then he smashed the corner of a wall with a fist.
God.
She had almost told him that she loved him, and Angel couldn’t allow that. He didn’t want to hear those words. One time he had surrendered to them, and the world began to go wrong. And the last thing he wanted was to upset Kate’s world.
Kate.
Gold.
Cream.
Fizzing water.
Liquid fire.
A ripe smell of death touched his shaken senses. In that alley, someone had been killed…
A couple of steps and he saw them. A newborn vampire and his first victim.
Too late.
Always too late.
The vampire didn’t hear him approach. He didn’t even have the chance to turn and see Death coming to him, dressed in black leather and unresolved tension. Angel broke his neck with such strength he took his head from the body, dusting him.
Buffy.
He was thinking about her now.
About how much fun he had had when, soulless and free from human weaknesses, he watched her trapping herself minute after minute in a net made of lies.
About the fact that now, with a soul, he could understand her mistakes. And share them with her.
It wasn’t so difficult to fall into that trap.
A good, innocent unique intention was enough.
Even a smile.
Or one kiss.
