Chapter 3
Ella sat on the cold metal counter as the brunette she met
earlier in Angel’s office tended to her. She had introduced herself as Fred,
which made Ella think the name of a guy but when she found out the full name it
made sense.
“So tell me, what exactly happened again?” Fred asked as she
placed bandaged on Ella’s arm. “Angel, just randomly attacked you? For no
reason?”
Ella glanced over at Spike for a moment, before looking back
at Fred. She had stretched the truth a bit when she retold the story to Fred.
“Well, yeah,” Ella answered. “He just sort of randomly
attacked me. I was leaving and BOOM! He tackles me and starts punching me.”
“Are you sure you didn’t do anything to egg him on? I mean
Angel wouldn’t just randomly attack someone while he was in vampire face,” Fred
pondered.
Ella just shrugged.
“He did it because he’s a jackass.” Ella repeated.
Spike chuckled as he touched his bandage on his left
forearm. He looked up at Ella and saw her watching him, closely. It seemed the
reading went both ways.
“For god sakes, Spike, stop picking at your bandage,” Ella
snapped slapping Spike’s hand.
Spike looked at her irritated.
“What are you, my bloody mother?” Spike snapped. “Hate to
break it to ya, but I’m way past mothering.”
Ella rolled her eyes at him before looking at Fred.
“This is coming from a guy, who still acts like a twelve
year old.” Ella teased.
“Watch it, pet. You might unleash the Big Bad,” Spike warned
with his cocky smirk.
Ella burst out into laughter. Everything about them sitting
and joking felt so natural. It was almost like he’d never died and they just
went on from the day before. Something was connecting between them and it
excited Ella to the point that it scared her. He was her best friend, and very
possibly her roommate, if they played her cards right.
“You got to be joking,” Ella scuffed. “You would never
unleash the Big Bad on your favorite girl.”
“You never can be too sure.” Spike said with an eyebrow
raise.
He reached over and punched her in the arm.
“OW!” Ella yelled. “Asshole!”
Spike laughed until she sucker punched him making him wince
in pain. He had forgotten about her sodding slayer strength.
“Bitch!” Spike snapped.
Fred looked between them before shaking her head.
“You two have a very…special
relationship,” Fred said gathering the medical supplies.
Ella looked Fred with a smirk.
“We’ve been told that,” Ella agreed. “We’ve also been called
children by our good friend, Rupert Giles.”
Spike snorted as he jumped off the counter.
“I’m going to let you birds, twaddle. I’m going to try to
get the big man to give you a bloody apartment,” Spike said as he strode for
the door.
“Ugh! Spike, did you learn nothing from the stupid fight?
Angel doesn’t want you bothering him now,” Ella yelled after him.
“AH HA! That’s what the fight was over.” Fred said looking
at Ella.
Ella raised her eyebrow at Fred in a very Spike fashion
before jumping off the counter as well. Spike was one of the most stubborn
people she had ever met. No, he wasn’t stubborn, he was pig headed. Maybe he
was both, ah hell, they mean the same thing. He was going to get into a worse
fight with Angel and possibly get one of them killed.
“No, that is not what the fight was over.” Ella corrected.
She let out a rough sigh before leaning against the counter
and looked at Fred seriously.
“The only reason I’m working in this big evil corporation is
to be sure Angel doesn’t do something stupid,” Ella informed.
“Like what?”
“Like becoming Angelus again and killing every single person
alive.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“I can’t believe it, I still can’t believe it,” Ella muttered
as she stood in the lavish apartment. “How the hell did you do it?”
Spike stood proud with his hands on his hips behind her
before walking up beside her and placing his hand on her shoulder. The place
was fully furnished and was a well mixture of their tastes. It was a high
priced contemporary style. It looked like it was almost taken out of one of
those home magazines.
Ella looked up at him with just pure amazement. The place
was a dream-come-true. Never in her life did she imagine to be living in such a
luxurious place. She would never have been able to afford something like this
if it wasn’t one of the perks with the job.
“You like it, pet?” Spike asked all ready knowing the
answer.
“I love it.” Ella answered stunned. “Again I ask how did you
do it?”
Spike put his hand on the middle of her back ignoring her
question, and escorted her further into the apartment. He watched her face as
he showed her the high tech kitchen and her frilly lavender and pink bedroom.
He wanted the best for her and he made sure the broody one gave it to her that
included her very own over the top feminine bedroom. He assured her that Angel
did not rip her off and that she did have herself a roommate, him. He smiled
when she squealed and hugged him. It did his dead heart good to see her feel
that happy and get everything that she wanted.
“How did you get it, Spike?” Ella asked again once they were
settled into the apartment. It was a time to celebrate so Spike dug out a beer
and offered one to Ella but she declined. Night fall was only an hour away and
they both knew it would time for them to patrol. She was hesitant since she
hadn’t fought a demon for nineteen days and the simple fact that Buffy didn’t
believe in her.
“I threaten to sue.” Spike answered sipping his beer.
Ella choked on the sandwich she was eating and stared at him
wide-eyed. That wasn’t Spike. Spike would never be one to threaten to sue. He
saw it as a wimp way to go.
“But…but…Spike…” Ella sputtered.
“What’s wrong, love? Eat some bad cheese?”
“No, it’s not the food. It’s…”
“I knew Peaches would screw us over on the food.”
“SPIKE! Stop! It’s not the food!”
“Then what is it?”
She paused a moment.
“You would never stoop so low as to use the law.” Ella said
slowly. She saw the look of irritation grow across his face and it clenched her
insides. “No, don’t give me that look, Spike. I’m very grateful for the
apartment. It’s very beautiful and exceeds my own dream apartment but you
shouldn’t have gone beyond your own standards to just get us an apartment. I
could have very well got us one with time.”
“I bloody well have every right to give you this look!”
Spike snapped getting up from his chair. “You’re acting like an ungrateful
bint!”
“No, Spike, that’s not what I’m saying!” Ella pleaded. “I’m
just saying…”
“Save it for someone who cares.”
He got up and stormed to his room leaving a stunned Ella at
the table. She tried to process what had just happened. She had never seen him
react so…so harshly before. She sat back with a groan. She rubbed her forehead
before getting up with her plate. She couldn’t believe what had just happened.
It wasn’t like she wasn’t grateful. She really was. So why the hell had she
just fucked up so badly? She tossed the sandwich into the garbage before
placing the plate into the sink.
Ella turned and looked at Spike’s closed door. She could
hear Sexpistols blaring from Spike’s room. He acted like a teenager now but she
knew deep down, if the sun wasn’t still up, he would have been out that door
without a thought. She was sure, the moment night hit, he would leave.
She looked at the ground. What the hell was she doing? She
couldn’t sit and mope about it? That would be the weak way out and she wasn’t
weak. If she was, Spike would have nothing to do with her. She was sure of that
and she would prove it.
Ella put on her slayer face and stalked over to his door.
She opened the door and walked in. She winced at the loud music as she closed
the door. She walked over to the stereo and turned it down. She could smell the
smoke coming from his bathroom. For some really odd reason, he smoked in the
bathroom.
She walked to the bathroom and leaned against the doorway.
She crossed her arms shaking her head.
“You know, you act like a hormonal teenage girl sometimes.” Ella teased.
Spike shot her a deadly look with a growl. She didn’t even
flinch. She just raised her eyebrows.
“Oh stop it, Spike. Don’t you think you’re over reacting a
bit?”
“I never bloody over react!” Spike yelled.
“Oh yeah, of course, because sitting in your room moping is
not all overreacting.”
“Do you want to die, slayer?”
She took a step closer to him.
“You wouldn’t kill me. I’m one of the few friends you have
left.”
Spike snorted before looking at her with his head tilted.
“Continue to fill your pretty little head with your pretty
little lies. You’re nothing, pet. You never have and you never will be. You’re
not a true slayer nor are you truly anything else. You’re just a simple bint in
a big corporation that will eat you alive.” Spike snarled.
Ella stood there silent staring at him with tears in her
emerald eyes. He had hit her below the belt and now she was staring at a
monster.
“You’re such a fucking asshole! You’re pissed over something
some stupid misunderstanding!” Ella said emotionally. “I’m so very grateful for
all of this but…No. I’m not going to explain myself. This is just ridiculous. I
don’t know what the hell your fucking problem is but get rid of it fast.”
She turned on her heel and stormed out of the room. She
slammed the bedroom door behind her almost taking it off the hinges. The tears
streamed down her face as shocked rolled through her. Ella looked at the front
door when she heard a knock. She whipped her face quietly before answering it.
She was surprised to see the bald, tall, buff Blackman from Angel’s office
standing there.
“Can I help you?” Ella asked hesitantly.
The man smiled before offering his hand.
“I’m Charles Gunn. I helped Spike get you this apartment.”
The man introduced.
Ella shook his hand before moving aside to let him in. He
walked inside and looked around nodding in approval.
“I hope everything is going ok for you, Ella.”
“Apartment wise, yes. Friend wise, going straight to hell.”
Ella replied. “Please have a seat.”
Gun chuckled before taking a seat in the overstuffed red
chair.
“Can I get you anything to drink? Soda? A beer? Water?”
“I’m fine thank you.”
Ella sat down on the couch and looked at Gunn seriously.
“So what exactly happened? You look like you’ve been
crying,” Gunn asked leaning forward.
“Spike and I exchanged a few heated words that went a bit
too far.” Ella explained. “I don’t understand why he got so upset. I simply
asked him why he threatened to sue. I mean Spike always resorts to violence,
not something logical like legal things.”
Gunn chuckled before patting her hand.
“We made a contract, in order for both you and Spike to have
this apartment. There are certain requirements he had to abide by.” Gunn said
in a very lawyer tone.
“What kind of requirements?”
“Well he has to work for Wolfram and Heart and for Angel.”
Something about it didn’t settle well with Ella. She stared
dead into Gunn’s eyes before taking an uneasy breath.
“What kind of job?”
Gun looked down for a moment before up at Ella.
“Before I tell you, I want you to know that I told Angel he
was being a bit harsh on the demands but Angel was stubborn and Spike was dead
set on you having…”
“What is the job,” Ella interrupted impatiently.
“He has to be Angel’s sectary and personal assistant, with
that he has to promise never to see nor ever speak to Buffy ever again. In
addition to, he agreed that you can not tell her what Angel is doing.” Gunn
informed.
Ella face went blank as her heart dropped to the pit of her stomach. She looked
back at the partly damaged door before back at Gunn. She took a huge swallow.
“Can you excuse me for a moment?”
She got up quickly before rushing into Spike’s room. He was
sitting on the bed putting his shoes on.
“Destroy the contract.” Ella ordered.
Spike looked up at her with heated anger eyes. He saw her
stone face with her surprised eyes before sighing.
“Bloody hell.” Spike muttered.
“You will go to Angel tonight and tell him that the deal is
off.” Ella said oddly calmly.
Spike got up from the bed instantly and stalked over to her.
Their eyes locked as they stood toe-to-toe.
“Don’t you bloody dare order me around. I’m not your sodding
lap dog.” Spike growled pinning her against the door. “I did this for you. So
you’ll bleeding well like it.”
She stared into his blue eyes before her eyes drifted to his
lips. They leaned in till they were merely centimeters apart before Spike
backed off.
“I don’t want this apartment.” Ella whispered. “I don’t want
this fucking apartment if that means giving up your dignity, Spike.”
God, she almost kissed Spike. Her heart hammered against her
chest. There was no way that it almost happened. NO! She did not have feelings
for him. She just did not! She refused to even believe it.
“It’s worth that look on your face, pet.” Spike whispered
grabbing his duster.
She swallowed still reeling with the fact they almost kissed
when he started to push her away from the door. She pushed her way back in
front of the door.
“Spike, I’m sorry, I am grateful for the apartment.” Ella
said softly. “But I don’t want this kind of apartment under those
circumstances.”
“Well too bloody well bad. You’ll like the sodding
apartment.” Spike said pushing her aside.
She watched him go with guilt.
“Don’t do this for me! You were right about what you said!
I’m not anything!” Ella yelled following him out of the room.
Spike whipped around and grabbed her shoulders tightly. He
held her tight as his face was full of anger.
“I never want to hear that coming from your sodding mouth
ever again! You bloody hear me!”
“But... you said...”
“Ignore what I sodding said!”
He let her go before striding out of the apartment and
closing the door behind him. Ella looked after him more bewildered then
anything beyond her imagination. She looked over at Gunn a bit embarrassed.
“I’m so sorry, you had to witness that.” Ella apologized.
“It’s all right. I was thinking Ella, since you’re new in
town and need to see the sites, would you like to go out on Friday? There is
great Italian restaurant just a few blocks away from the office.” Gunn asked.
Ella stared stunned at him.
“Are you asking me out on a date?”
“Yes, I am.”
Ella thought for a second. This was the only way to prove to
her self that she didn’t have feelings for Spike. Plus, Gunn was an attractive,
strong, lawyer. What the hell?
“I would love to.” Ella said with a small smile.
“Great! I’ll pick you up at Friday around Eight. Make sure
to wear something nice.” Gunn informed before leaving.
Ella sat down in the nearest chair and let out a breath. The
day was more eventful then she could ever imagine. She not only got a new job
but a beautiful apartment, resulting in fighting with Spike but also in getting
a date for Friday night. God, Life was odd.
