Chapter 3 – Frustration
Cordy had found them a new office. Admittedly it was a bleary,
small office, that smelled funny and was filled with tons of waste.
But it was theirs none the less. Finally they would start working
again. At least they would as soon as they got this mess cleaned up.
While Cordy had gone out to get their new flyers, Wesley and Gunn
were stuck doing the clean-up. Gunn was still grumbling about the
task, but the three of them had drawn straws and Cordy got to get the
flyers. At the moment, Wesley pretended to sort some books into their
new shelf, while inconspicuously staring at Gunn's ass.
The darker man was currently kneeling on the floor sorting through
papers and throwing them into the waste basket. His back was turned
towards Wesley, giving the Englishman a perfect view of his behind.
“Hey Wes, if you're finished sorting those books. You could
help me here.”
Tearing himself away from his observation, Wesley walked over to
Gunn, starting to scoop up papers. They had their backs turned to
each other, while cleaning the floor. Wesley crawled backwards, while
working, unconsciously bringing himself
closer to Gunn. Lifting up a stack of papers, Wesley stood up.
Turning around he suddenly found himself face to face with Gunn, who
had stood and turned the same moment.
The two of them were so close, that their chests were practically
touching. The air in the room suddenly charged with tension. Looking
into each others eyes, neither of them moved, standing frozen in
shock.
If he moved just a little bit closer, Gunn could easily press his
lips to Wesley's. But he simply couldn't move. His eyes darted down
to Wesley's lips, unconsciously licking his
own. Looking back up, Gunn saw that Wesley's eyes were still focused
on his face.
Wesley watched as Gunn licked his lips, feeling heat shoot down to
his groin. Oh, God. They were so close. All he would have to do,
would be to move a little bit forward. But he couldn't. The moment
between them stretched and neither of them moved, waiting for the
other do do something. Their eyes still locked together, they started
to drift closer. Suddenly the office door was thrown open.
Jumping away from each other in shock, the moment broken, they
quickly busied themselves with the strewn about papers again, before
Cordy could fully enter the door. She came in, carrying a stack of
yellow flyers in her hands.
“Hey, guys. How are you holding up? Someone has to
distribute those.”
Gunn almost ripped the papers from her hands, saying: “I'll
do it.” Then he stormed out of the office, in the blink of an
eye. Cordy and Wesley stood in the office, incredulously
looking at his retreating figure.
“What's with him today?”, Cordelia asked curiosity
filling her voice. There was something strange going on here, but she
couldn't put her finger on what it was. Wesley was cleaning in record
speed, trying to seem as busy as possible.
“I don't know. I didn't realize, that he's been acting
strange.”, his voice was slightly higher than usual and Wesley
could only hope, that Cordelia hadn't realized that. He breathed a
sigh of relief, when she let the subject drop and joined in him in
cleaning the office.
Oh, God. He had almost kissed Gunn. The thought had needed some
time to fully register in his mind. And it had seemed as if Gunn had
been willing to kiss him back. Or he was just wishfully imagining
things and it had been nothing. Wes didn't think, that he could
survive the humiliation of kissing the
other man and being rejected. Better not risk it. It wasn't like he
was unfamiliar with not having the person he wanted, so he should be
able to live with that.
Banishing these thoughts to the back of his mind, Wesley
concentrated on clearing the floor.

Reality. Reality was a bitch, that had just reared it's ugly head
and smacked him right in the face. Gunn felt the jealousy stab at his
heart the moment Virginia entered the office. Virginia. Wesley's
girlfriend. It was easier to think, that he had a chance with Wesley,
when she wasn't there and he had to face the cruel reality.
At least they had a demon to kill now, so he could work some of
the tension out of his body. They had been so close this morning and
he had thought, that Wesley had been able to feel the tension too.
But probably he was only deluding himself and the Englishman had
simply been uncomfortable by their closeness. Maybe he had imagined
the spark in Wesley's eyes, that matched the one in his own. Seeing
what he had wanted to see.
Gunn stayed silent as he followed Wes and Cordy to the car and
during the whole ride to Virginia's friend. He ignored the curious
looks Cordy shot him, concentrating on polishing his ax.
In the backseat, Virginia was continuously talking about her friend's
family, their money and other such bullshit. Gunn stifled
the urge to use his ax to shut her up. How
did Wes stand to be with that superficial, spoiled bitch? He really
deserved better.

They had easily killed the demon their last customer had been so
afraid off. It had been a small, but extremely ugly thing, that had
hidden in the man's cupboard. But a quick ax
swing and they were ready to go back to their party. Some guests had
already left, but the party itself was still going strong. Two
customers in one day. They were starting off real good. Cordelia,
Gunn and Wesley sat together at their desk, drinking the remnants of
Virginia's champagne and celebrating their victory.
It was almost three am, when Cordelia went home, leaving Wesley
and Gunn behind. Their guests had left a while ago and Cordelia had
given the task of cleaning up over to her two friends. Still sitting
at the table the two of them shared a bottle of cheap whiskey, Wesley
had brought over earlier. They were still far too celebratory to
simply clean up and go home.
Gunn looked at Wesley out of the corner of his eyes. The
Englishman looked pretty drunk. Maybe now was the time to take a
chance. If Wes rejected his advances, he could always pretend to not
remember a thing in the morning. Alcohol really had it's perks.
Leaning towards Wes, he asked: “You happy with Virginia?”
“Huh? What kind of question is that?”, Wesley's voice
was slightly slurred, but he wasn't all that drunk. Although Gunn
obviously seemed to be. Taking another swing from the bottle, Wesley
waited for the other man to talk.
“Just wanna know.”
“Don't know. She's nice and looks okay.
So...”, Wesley trailed off and fell silent. Actually he didn't
really know why he stayed with Virginia. He didn't love her, but
simply didn't have the guts to tell her so. Besides being with her
was better than being alone and he didn't have a chance with Gunn
anyway.
Suddenly he found Gunn leaning on his shoulder. He was obviously
more drunk, than Wesley had thought. Why else would Gunn put his arm
around him and lean his head on his shoulder. God. It felt so good to
have the other man close. So close, that Wesley could smell his
clean, masculine scent and feel Gunn's body heat seep through his
shirt. Wesley kept completely still, afraid, that Gunn would draw
back if he moved.
They stayed like this for a couple of minutes, neither of them
moving. Wesley wasn't sure if Gunn was still awake or if he had
fallen asleep on his shoulder. Gunn looked
up, when Wesley turned his head to study his face. This move once
again put their faces close to each other, their mouths only inches
apart.
Looking at Wesley's lips, Gunn decided, that it was worth the risk
and pressed their mouths together. Wesley was frozen at first, but
then started to eagerly respond to Gunn's tentative kiss. Opening his
mouth, he felt Gunn's tongue slide inside and tangle with his own.
Eventually they needed to break the kiss to breathe.
It suddenly registered to Wes, that he was kissing Gunn. Kissing
one of the two friends he had at the moment, who was most likely not
even interested in him and kissed him only, because he was drunk. Not
to mention the fact, that he was still in a relationship with
Virginia. Feeling himself panic, Wesley quickly got up, said his
goodbyes and left the office.
Damn it. He'd fucked it up. He had most likely just ruined a very
good friendship. What had gotten into him to kiss Wesley anyway? He
knew that the man had a girlfriend. Gunn decided, that the best
course of action was probably to pretend that nothing had happened or
he had been too drunk to remember. But it would be even harder to
suppress his more-than-just-friendship
feelings for the Englishman, now that he had had a taste. Sighing
Gunn put out the candles and left their office. They could always
clean up tomorrow.
