Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel the Series. They are the property of Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy et al. I do not make money from the writing of this, it is purely entertainment. I do not mean any disrespect to the actors who have portrayed these characters. This fic contains explicit Male/Male relationships if you are adverse to this or are under the age of eighteen then please do not read. Thankyou to all the online writers who help keep the Buffyverse alive.
Summary: What if Buffy couldn’t stop the snake demon before it got back to Glory. Starts in the Buffy Season 5 Episode Shadow but then goes AU. Angel is the same as cannon up to this point except that Darla is not visiting Angel in his dreams despite having been brought back by Wolfram and Hart you’ll find out why later. Furthermore, this follows Jenns fic Playing Games found at AdultFanFiction or the Slashaholics Island. You don’t need to have read that to follow this but I do recommend it as it’s a great fic. I moved the timeline back a bit so that by the Season 5 Ep Shadow the boys are a threesome and Spike and Xander are only in Sunnydale to pick up their stuff before moving in with Angel.

Reviews: Kage - Thanks its very much appreciated
Lady Virgo1956 - Thanks for the review, I have no idea where Willow sent Glory and as for Anne if you remember in cannon in the ep Lie to Me there was a group of vampire worshippers including Chanterelle. Then in the episode Anne Buffy met up with Chanterelle, now calling herself Lilly and tried to help her boyfriend Ricky, when she left she gave Lilly the name Anne and then Anne popped up on Angel running the teen centre but Angel never made the connection so its all cannon not my imagination
Daeomae - Like Angel would listen to anything he doesn't want to. Oh yes Angel is running straight into trouble with a captial troub as you'll see this chapter, thanks for the review.
A/N: A big thanks to Jenn for allowing me to use some of her ideas evident in Playing Games. Buffyworld is back! A big thanks to Howard Russell for bringing such a wonderful resource back online.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Spike looked up from where he had been reading Ben’s personal files on the computer, Willow had hacked into the hospital records and traced his history back from there. The guy had serious inconsistencies in his records, such as home schooling and distance education for college. Unfortunately, there wasn’t an LA address for where Ben was living and so Spike couldn’t go menace this kid for information. However by the smell, they could have more serious problems. Just then Xander walked into the office.
“Any luck?” Xander inquired.
“When did you see Mr Tall, Dark and Broody last?” Spike demanded.
“Well hello to you too,” Xander thought about the question before finally replying, “not for about an hour why?”
“Think he’s done a lone wolf, his smell isn’t as intense and I can’t feel him close by.”
“What! Why?” Xander started to panic, ‘why would Angel go off without telling them?’
“Shh Xander, calm down, he’s just trying to be all macho-y, its not a reflection of us, let’s go check upstairs before jumping to conclusions.” Spike attempted to be the smart, responsible one for his mate. Now that he thought about it he should of seen it coming. Angel was in himself insecure about his part in their threesome, even after all this time. Spike knew that Angel tried to hide it even from himself, but Spike knew that deep down Angel thought that Spike and Xander would be better off without him in the mix. A load of codswallop in Spike’s opinion. Just because Spike and Xander were together before Spike devised his plan to get Angel into the mix didn’t mean that they didn’t need Angel.
Now Angel had gone off and Spike was sure that Angel has gone after Darla, alone. That’s what really annoyed Spike, that Angel didn’t think that they could help him, that they couldn’t understand how Angel felt. If only Angel had talked to them and explained how he felt to them. Spike was determined to find Angel so that he could knock some sense into his Sire, with his fists if he had to. They quickly made it up to their rooms and barged in without knocking, as they had already suspected Angel was not there. However there were a number of sketches of the floor, Xander walked over as if in a daze and picked one up.
“What does this mean?” He asked staring down at Darla in game face.
“I’m not sure pet, I’m not sure.”

Angel had been searching round LA for a couple of hours now and he was regretting not drinking some blood or having his wounds looked at before he left the hotel. He could admit to himself that he was definitely the worse for wear. The couple of fights he’d been in since then to gather information had probably not helped. The sun was set to rise soon and Angel was beginning to despair. He had no idea where Darla could be skulking but he didn’t want to go home empty handed either. He walked down behind another anonymous bar not really noticing where he was going until his sensitive nose caught a scent, a scent that he had last smelt on Lindsey’s jacket. Darla! Angel snuck further down the alleyway, now aware that their were two people already down there, one was a vampire and the other one was his ex-Sire.
"How do you know I won't just kill you here, drain you and leave your body?" Angel heard the minion ask. ‘Had Darla really sunk this low that she was looking for any old demon to kill her?’ Angel asked himself but then he caught the minions scent and his eyes widened, definitely Aurielius, if Angel had to guess as to the identity of the Sire Angel would say his dead childe Penn as that was who this unknown vampire smelled most like. Penn must have had turned him before Angel had staked Penn last year. Angel watched impassively as Darla kissed the minion using all of her experience.
"I'll take my chances." Darla replied as they finally broke apart. The minion was obviously stunned as he answered.
"I… I… I should probably mention that I... I'm not real clear on how this thing works." Angel rolled his eyes at the obviously stupid minion and Darla was prepared to be turned by him? She had to be extremely desperate. The Darla Angel remembered would not of let an inept minion like this into the house.
"What?" A startled Darla asked the minion, she was obviously having second thoughts.
"Well, ah, I never actually did it, ah, to anybody before… and I was kind of out when it happened to me," the vampire who was obviously stuck in the nineties answered.
"I'll walk you through it.” Darla replied, she could not wait twiddling her thumbs while Wolfram and Hart attempted to find someone suitable to turn her. “Drink.” Angel watched as she exposed her neck to the vampire. “When you feel my heart start to slow, stop." The vampire leaned in close to the tempting blonde woman while she closed her eyes, he decided to go for it but in the next instant was staked by Angel, who had finally stepped forward, he wasn’t going to let this happen. Darla looked up and on seeing Angel there she punched him before yelling at him completely furious.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Saving you." Angel had only just realised that Darla was in fact human, which meant that she had a soul and could be redeemed, saved, if he killed her now he would be destroying his own soul.
"I wasn't in any danger, Angelus. Believe me, I picked a stupid one. I always pick the stupid ones, didn't you know that? I can take care of myself." Darla attempted to rile up the stoic vampire in front of her, hoping that there was a chance that he might get so angry as to drain her, then he would turn her out of guilt and knowing the brooding one, try to have her soul restored. However Darla knew that with or without her soul she would then be able to get her revenge on Angel and his lovers.
"I didn't mean from him. I was saving you from yourself." Angel knew that this was another helpless soul that he needed to save, Angel didn’t believe that some souls couldn’t be saved. In Angel’s dictionary there was no such thing as couldn’t or can’t.
"Who asked you?" Darla asked, sick of Angel sticking his nose into other peoples business.
"This isn't the answer."
"You don't even know what the question is. Why can't you leave me alone." Darla turned to walk away from Angel, maybe those fools at the law firm could find her some way of being restored to her former glory. Angel stopped her from walking away leaning in close to her face.
"You do this thing and I won't be able to leave you alone, don't you get that? I'll never be able to leave you alone.” Angel showed her the stake wanting to get his point across. “Next time it'll be you on the end of this stake. I'm sorry, but I don't want that, not again." As he was speaking Angel realised it was true, he didn’t want to go through the war between his demon and his soul because he had staked his Sire again.
"Don't worry. I wouldn't let it happen twice." Angel heard it for the threat it was and he accepted it, but right now she was human and maybe her soul could be saved. Darla this time succeeded in walking away from him.
"Where are you going?" Angel asked knowing that he wouldn’t get a straight answer.
"Not back in there, everyone saw me leave with the Mullet. Try something on the Westside, I guess." Darla was never going to tell Angel that she was planning on going back to the law firm.
"Another dive, another looser?"
"What do you care?" She accused turning round to face him pissed off with his righteous do-gooding attitude.
"This isn't you, Darla." Angel attempted to placate her stepping closer.
"You know, just because we had a thing for 150 years, don't presume you know me!" She yelled at him, truly furious now.
"So you really want to be made by some creep in some filthy alley?" Angel asked knowing what her answer would be.
"I wanted you to do it. You or William."
"That'll never happen," Angel vowed.
"So I do what I have to do. Anyway, you were made in an alley, if I recall." Darla tried to get in a cheap shot as she turned to leave again.
"That's not the point."
"Yeah, well, what is the point, Angelus?" She asked bitterly.
"The point is, you were undead for 400 years, you've only been human again for a few months. Why not give it some time." Angel reasoned.
"I don't have time."
“You have what, two months? Darla, you’ve been given an amazing opportunity to do it right, to this time make the right decision and pass away like you were supposed to.” At one point Angel would have done anything for that chance and if he had been given it now he still would use it to the best of his abilities even when it meant he would have been leaving his lover’s for ever. Before Darla could respond there was a screeching of tires and Angel felt a prick in his side. He glanced at the dart embedded in his side for a moment before looking back up in puzzlement.
“What?” His responses must have been slowed down from whatever was in the dart because next thing Angel knew he was being forced onto his knees by two muscly men. Darla turned to run but two other dark clad burly men grab a hold of her. A fifth man taped Angel’s hands behind his back, Angel struggled but whatever they have shot him with was affecting his paranormal strength. Another man rolled up in a wheelchair and grabbing hold of Angel’s hair wenched it back so that Angel is forced to look up into Lindsey’s flashing eyes.
"How did you think this would end?" Lindsey asked the bound struggling vampire in front of him glad that he would finally be getting his own back. Darla froze when she noticed Lindsey and catching a movement behind Lindsey made her smile. ‘Of course’, Darla thought as she watched her insane grand-childe glide towards her. Darla knew that she would soon be back to her old strength and then she and Drusilla would reek their revenge on all those who had made her life difficult starting with Angel and his lovers.
Angel watched on helplessly as his childe wearing a low cut, red dress sashayed over to an unresisting Darla. Angel could not wretch himself away from the muscle and Lindsey would not let go of his hair so Angel was forced to watch the scene unfold in front of him while inside he shattered into many tiny pieces. He watched hopelessly as Drusilla brushed the hair away from Darla’s neck and bite down. As both Lindsey and Angel watched avidly but for completely different reasons Drusilla scratched a bloody line across her own chest. After smirking at Angel she moved Darla closer and pressed the blonde’s mouth to the blood. Darla fed like a suckling babe as Angel watched powerless to stop it.

Xander and Spike were sitting on a couch in the lobby together, Xander on Spikes lap while they were watching the sun rise and waiting for their lover to come home. Suddenly Spike sat up straighter, upsetting Xander.
“Something’s wrong, I can feel it, something’s happening to Angel!” Spike stood ready to charge out the door where the sun was already starting to light up the ground. He was brought up short by an arm attaching itself to his wrist.
“How can you tell?” Xander asked desperately, hoping that Spike couldn’t feel anything and their lover was in fact fine and making his way back to them via the sewers.
“Can’t you feel it Xan? It may be weak, close your eyes and concentrate on Angel,” Xander looked at the peroxide incredulously before closing his eyes and doing as instructed. ‘This is stupid,’ he thought to himself but the next second his eyes sprang open and he looked at Spike in shock.
“I can feel something! He’s in trouble! How can I…?”
“It’s the bond Xan, the mating bond, as time goes on it will become stronger almost as strong as the bond between Sire and Childe but right now we need to find him or there won’t be a later for us.” Spike knew they had to act quickly, if Angel was somehow unable to move that sun could fry him any second.
“Spike, you can’t go out there, the sun!”
“We’ll take the sewers but come on pet we need to hurry.”
“You can find him through the bond?”
“Yes, now hurry up,” and the two lover’s were off down the basement steps and into the sewers without letting anyone know where they were going.
*****
Spike swore as he lingered in the doorway, his only protection from the sun. He could see his Sire unconscious on the other side of the alley, just out of the sun’s reach but only for a couple of minutes before his foot would be within the sun’s grasp and that would be all it took for Angel to go up in smoke. Lucky for both vampires they had a human mate who dashed across the alley to the side of his unconscious lover.
Xander landed next to an unconscious Angel immediately pulling him further into the shade until he was firmly against the alley wall buying them a couple of minutes but they still had a major problem. Angel was unconscious and Xander couldn’t carry him across the alleyway quickly enough to the safety of the sewers, neither could Spike dash across and then back carrying Angel without them both combusting in the sun.
“How is he pet?” Spike called out, cursing his helplessness. Xander looked Angel over and started to try and undo Angel’s hands before he caught sight of the dart still embedded in Angel’s side.
“He’s been drugged. What happened here?” Xander asked, it didn’t make sense that Angel was left here in the condition he was in. Before Spike could answer the Scooby-Doo theme song was heard loud in the otherwise quiet alley. Xander immediately fished out his phone and answered it when he saw it was Gunn’s mobile that was ringing him.
“Yeah?”
“Xander, where the hell are you and Spike. You just took off without a word man.” Gunn was annoyed, he was in Angel’s car with Wesley and they had been trolling the streets for Xander and Spike until they realised that the boys would have a phone on them and they should at least try it.
“Look, no time for explanations but we’ve found Angel and its bad can you get here in the next couple of minutes?”
“We can try.
