Chapter 28

Later that night a tearful Buffy asked Spike to take her home to get the essential items. They got her bathroom essentials, her clothes, a few CDs, her weapons chest, which was not easy carrying down a trellis; she left a note for her mother on the bed, and disappeared with her mate.

A few minutes after Spike and Buffy disappeared; Joyce climbed steps and looked down the hall at Buffy's door.

�Buffy?� Joyce called out softly. She hoped her daughter had come home to stay and that she would forgive her angry words the night before.

Joyce walked to Buffy's room and looked in. The windows were open, and some of her daughter's things were strewn on the bed. She stepped in and looked around. She saw a note on the bed among a bunch of clothes. She picked up the note. She began to cry as she sat down on the bed and read:

Dear Mom,

I know we said some things to each other last night in anger. But you�ll have to come to grips with my situation on your own. There is no way for me to explain something to you that I don�t even understand myself. Please know that I am well and that I am loved with my new family. Spike and I will take care of each other. And as head of our clan, Angelus will watch out for us all. I don�t know what tomorrow will bring, be it another peaceful day or my death, but know that I am careful and that I�m protected by the Aurelian clan.

Outside the Sunnydale High School, Xander and Giles walked up to Oz pushing Willow in a wheelchair with Cordelia at their side. Giles' walk was a bit unsteady.

�Willow, are you sure you should be out of bed?� Giles asked concerned for the girl�s welfare.

�Look who's talking,� Willow teased softly.

�Um, yes,� Giles smiled at the redhead and looked down at his injured hand.

�Any word?� Cordelia asked curiously.

�You guys haven't seen her either?� Xander asked when no one spoke up.

�No,� Willow confirmed.

�But we know the world didn't end, 'cause . . .� Oz said, looking around. �Check it out.�

Giles took off his glasses and squinted. �Well, I, uh . . . I went back to the mansion this morning. Spike�s car was gone, but Angelus� convertible was there. They will take care of her.�

�Yeah,� Willow agreed.

They all turned and headed into the school. The teenagers broke off, going to class and Giles walked to his library. When he opened the door and looked up he saw five members of the Watcher�s Council and Wesley Wyndham-Pryce standing in the common area of the library.

�Hello, Rupert,� Quentin Travers greeted Giles.

Angelus stared at Acathla�s statue, the sword still protruding from its chest. With the council bearing down on them, he wondered what would happen if he pulled the sword out now and sent them all to hell. Would the Council survive it?

He had heard Spike and Buffy return to the mansion at daybreak with her belongings. Before they had left, he had made the decision that she should move in with them for her protection. Buffy told him that her mother had kicked her out of the house the night before. It worked out for the best though.

Buffy was moving in closer to the clan which made Drusilla calmer knowing that none of them were left alone. At dusk they were going to the atrium to encourage the slayer to be more in touch with her demon and hone her abilities. She couldn�t fathom her natural instincts, but from what he had seen in the past months, she would have made a hell of a vampire.

After they had gotten back to the mansion, Spike and Buffy collapsed into bed for much needed rest after the events of the previous night. The vampire wrapped himself around his mate, molding their bodies together. They took comfort from being close to each other and being alive. Buffy�s heat warmed his cool skin.

�Hello, Mr. Travers. How can I help you?� Giles asked as he took off his glasses to clean them.

�Where is the girl, Mr. Giles?� Quentin Travers asked gruffly.

�I�m for certain I don�t know who you mean,� Giles said innocently.

�The slayer, Mr. Giles. Where is your charge?� Quentin Travers asked more clearly.

�Miss Summers isn�t in school today, she�s been expelled for allegedly starting a fight,� Giles said. It wasn�t a complete lie, she had been expelled.

�I see, and would we find her at home?� Travers asked curtly.

�Um, no. She�s not at home. I don�t know where she would be,� Giles replied.

Travers sighed in exasperation. �Well then, where are the vampires she�s claimed to be her family,� Travers asked impatiently.

When Giles refused to answer, Travers walked closer to him. �We cannot let her run free, Mr. Giles. She has become a demon. She is no longer proficient in her duties as a slayer. She has become evil and must be destroyed along with the rest of her clan,� Quentin stated matter-of-factly.

�Mr. Travers, I assure you that Buffy Summers is not evil. She doesn�t even have a clue as to what is happening to her. I sure as bloody hell won�t give you information that would allow you to hunt her down and wittingly kill her,� Giles said angrily.

Quentin Travers nodded. �Uh huh.� He looked at Giles and then clasped his wrists behind his back, pacing in front of the watcher. �We will find her Mr. Giles. I just thought you might want to save your own career as a member of the Watcher�s Council and hand her over without incident. I see now that you have become too close to your charge,� Travers said.

Giles stared at the head of the Council and wondered what would come next. He refused to tell Quentin Travers just where to find Buffy, even if he did know exactly where she was. He hoped that Angelus and Spike would watch out for her as Angelus had promised. In a twist of thought, he wondered why he trusted the word of a vampire.

�We will search this town high and low for the girl,� Travers said as he stopped in front of Giles. �A town this size can�t be that big, so when we do find her we�ll see what type of demon she has turned into and destroy it accordingly.�

�She is still human, Mr. Travers. Whatever else she shares a body with, she is still human,� Giles said adamantly.

�Whether she is human or not, the slayer or not, her conscience is being ruled by the thing inside her,� Travers stated flatly. He turned to his colleagues. �Let�s go, everyone. We are to find that girl and stop her before she harms anyone.�

The representatives of the Watcher�s Council filed out of the library behind Quentin Travers leaving Giles desolate. He wanted to get a hold of Angelus or Spike, but he didn�t think either of them carried cell phones and he didn�t want to call Buffy and scare her anymore than she already was. He entered his office hoping against hope that Angelus lived � or unlived � up to what he said.

The blond couple slept until an hour before dusk. Spike was awake but his eyes were still closed. He brushed his lips along her shoulder to her neck and then slipped his tongue out to lick along his claim mark, causing Buffy to moan in her sleep. He moved up close to her ear.

�Pet?� Spike cooed to her as he gently took her lobe between his teeth and nipped her with blunt teeth.

�Mmm,� Buffy moaned in her sleep and snuggled against her mate�s body.

�Buffy, time to wake up, love,� Spike whispered.

He was eager to help her tap into her new instincts. One of the things that had awakened him was her demon purring. It had vibrated against his chest, causing his own demon to respond in kind. Spike knew the atrium wasn�t an adequate place compared to, for instance, a lea at night where she could get in touch with the elements and explore her senses. But with the council so close they had no choice but to stay close to the mansion.

�Buffy . . . oh God,� Spike really was trying to play nice and gently wake her up, but she wasn�t playing fair. Buffy had slid her legs up along his sides and tightened them, pressing the length of his cock against her cleft.

Spike�s eyes rolled up at the feel of her heat along the underside of his shaft, and involuntarily pressed against her clit causing her to purr louder. After an adequate meal, Spike took Buffy to the atrium. She sat down in one of the planters, Indian style. He sat across from her on the loose soil and held her hands, interlocking their fingers.

�Okay. Now, Buffy, just relax,� Spike told her as he mentally massaged the stress and tense spots out of her body.

Buffy felt him brush against her mind and she opened to him. She relaxed with every gentle massage she could feel until she let her head fall back and moaned softly at his imagined touch.

�Okay, pet, now gradually open your senses to the world around you, the feel and scent of the earth beneath you, the air around you, sounds of nature around you,� Spike encouraged.

Buffy relaxed even more with the sound of his voice. She did as he asked until the sound of crickets, the trickle of the water falling into Koi pond, the scent of Jasmine blooms assailed her senses, and her mate�s voice became a gentle lull in the background.

Soon she discovered that everything around her had a sound and scent. The insects, the loose dirt beneath her, her mate, everything. She could even hear Angelus and Drusilla in their bedroom together. Thankfully she couldn�t pick up the images with her mind, but the sound was there. She didn�t feel any danger around the immediate vicinity.

Buffy was pleasantly exploring her senses contently when she felt danger at a hundred yards and moving closer to them. Her whole body tensed and hummed with warning. Her eyes snapped open to reveal the bright turquoise color of her demon and they met Spike�s yellow orbs. He had felt the danger too. They both sprang up and ran into the house.

Buffy raced down the hall and banged on Angelus� bedroom door. �Angelus, they�re coming! Hurry!� she cried through the thick wood paneling.

In mid-knock, the door burst open and Angelus barreled out of the room pulling a barely awake Drusilla behind him. �I know, Buffy, I sensed them too. They�re close. Goddamn pompous bastards think they can get the drop on the Aurelius clan. They have another thing coming,� he growled.

Angelus opened the front door to a representative of the Watcher�s Council, �No one takes out this family but me,� he growled and dragged the spooked man inside. Turning his vampire features on the scared man in a pinstripe suit. �Why the fuck are you here and what the hell do you want?� he snarled at the man, towering over him by a foot.

The man backed up as four sets of demon eyes stared at him. He pulled his collar out from his neck and gulped. �W-w-we just want the girl. W-w-we won�t h-h-harm you. We just n-n-need to s-s-see what�s insid-d-de her, so that we can d-d-destroy it,� the representative stammered, completely scared out of his mind at the beast before him.

�You really think I�m that gullible? If I was, I wouldn�t have lived to be 242 years old. You�re going to go back out there and you�re going to tell those others with you that you will not be getting any of us to do any testing on. Buffy is no longer a concern of yours and shouldn�t have been since the replacement slayer came into play. Now that Kendra�s dead I�m sure you have another slayer already to worry about, so take Buffy off your fucking radar!� Angelus growled as he stepped closer to the man with every phrase.

Angelus grabbed the man around the neck, hauled him off his feet and nearly threw him out of the house with all his strength. He slammed the door again and looked around at his childer. Spike had Buffy wrapped in his arms and Drusilla was whimpering softly.

�Now see here, this Quentin Travers speaking and if you don�t hand over the girl, we will break down this door and dust all of you,� said a gruff voice through the door.

Angelus rolled his eyes at the threat. All these idle threats and the bunch of suits out there hide behind a slip of a girl they call the slayer. Well, he wasn�t going to let them have Buffy that easily. He�d kill them all first and merrily dance in pools of their blood. Just then he heard the pound and the feel of the door bounce on its hinges as they banged something hard and heavy against it. I think it�s time to run.

�Run!� Angelus barked, taking Drusilla�s hand and heading for the back of the house and out to the atrium, Spike and Buffy close at his heels.

The foursome ran through an adjacent cemetery as fast they could. Angelus looked back to see the headlights of a van as it raced down the street after them. They cut through the cemetery into the bad part of town that housed Willy�s Bar and raced inside.

�Hello, Willy, we need to use your sewer entrance!� Spike yelled at the bewildered bartender as they ran by. Shortly after they entered the tunnels, Council suits with rigged stake-shooting machine guns showed up.

�Where are they?� a representative questioned the bartender.

�I-I-I-I don�t know what you guys are talking about. This is a safe place for all demons to mingle, there are no guns allowed in this bar,� Willy stammered.

The man looked at Willy with eyes full of hate. �Honest to God, I don�t know who you are talking about or where they are,� he cried.

Once they got to the sewers, all four sets of senses kicked in as they navigated through the tunnels. Buffy had a death grip on Spike�s hand as he led her through them. They came to a drain. Buffy being lighter and more adept on her feet climbed up the ladder and opened the manhole cover. She looked around and climbed back down into Spike�s waiting hands.

Angelus looked at her for confirmation on where they were. �Galloway Road,� she said.

Angelus nodded. �Angel�s apartment is the next street over,� he said to no one in particular. He look up at the manhole cover and then up and down the tunnels deciding the best route to go.

Choosing a tunnel they trotted down the passage way to another drain. On the surface street, the Watchers were using radar to track them through the tunnels. It surprised Buffy when she stuck her head out of the manhole to figure out what street they were on and two men grabbed her under her arms and pulled her up out of the manhole.

�SPIKE!� Buffy screamed as they dragged her up and away from the drain. She struggled and tried to throw her body away from her captors.

Spike was racing up the ladder with Angelus and Drusilla right behind him when he popped up and saw them drag his mate into the dark van. His features shifted to his demon and he erupted with a pained growl that echoed through the night. He ran after the van as it picked up speed, Angelus and Drusilla behind him.

The Aurelian clan ran five blocks after the van before Angelus called a halt. Spike stopped and turned angry eyes at his grandsire. He�s got to be bloody insane to want to stop. They have my mate! He rushed at Angelus and grabbed him around the lapels of his duster.

�What the bloody hell do you mean �stop�? They have her for soddin� sake! They are going to kill her Angelus. They are going to turn her into a bleedin� science experiment and then kill her and I don�t know what your relationship is with her, but I will dust before I let her die! Bloody fuckin� hell, Angelus! She�s one of us,� Spike was honestly near tears as he ranted at his grandsire.

Angelus grabbed Spike�s wrists and pried the younger vampire�s hands away from his coat. �I know she�s your mate and I know she�s one of us, Will. But chasing that van down, praying that it will stop soon won�t get her back. Now, if you want to get her back, we�ll have to do this my way,� Angelus growled.

Sunnydale City Shed, Temporary Headquarters for Watcher�s Council

Buffy was banging on the side of the truck with her feet. The banging sound continued as Smith, a representative for the Council, walked toward the armored truck with a syringe.

�This'll bloody keep you quiet,� Smith said under his breath as he opened the back of the truck and stepped inside.

Buffy grabbed him and locked him in a chokehold with the chains that connected her wrists.

�Uh,� Smith moaned his distress.

Buffy�s enhanced hearing had picked up what he said before he got into the van and whispered in his ear, � How about this? I'll be quiet, and you can scream.�

Buffy squeezed the chains tighter causing Smith to scream. Two other representatives, Weatherby and Collins looked inside from the back of the truck.

Buffy saw them and turned her face toward them showing her demon�s turquoise eyes. �Now that I have your attention, unchain me, very slowly and politely, or I kill this guy,� she threatened them.

�When we go on a job, we always put our affairs in order first, in case of accident,� Collins said smoothly.

�Collins . . .� Smith rasped out pleadingly.

Collins shrugged. �Sorry, Smithy,� he said in mock apology and walked away with Weatherby.

Outside the van, the two colleagues talked about their predicament.

�She's starting to bother me,� Collins admitted to his partner.

Weatherby nodded. �Getting her across the border is gonna be a lot more trouble than it's worth,� he said.

�If the council can even get us passage. I'll call them. It's time for a contingency plan,� Collins said.

Both men were surprised when Smith flew out of the back of the van and fell, groaning. Collins stepped over the man and went to a quiet place in the barn to dial his cell phone.

�Yes, Mr. Travers. I understand that, but what about her clan? Uh huh. Okay,� Collins snapped his phone shut and walked back toward his partner. Smith was still on the ground trying to catch his breath.

�They can't get us passage. They've ordered the kill. They said to stake the clan if they ever become an obstacle,� Collins informed Weatherby while he screwed a silencer onto his pistol.

�Torch the place?� Weatherby asked in assumption.

Collins nodded. �Get the gas.�

Weatherby walked away to find a gas can.

�She could've killed me. She didn't,� Smith rasped out looking up at Collins.

�Lucky you,� Collins said snidely.

Collins stepped closer to the van and stuck the muzzle of the gun inside the vehicle. He was about to pull the trigger when Buffy grabbed the pistol and his hands with her feet and pulled him into the van hard enough to stun him. Before he could react she pulled the gun closer to her hands and shot the manacles holding her.

�Weatherby!� Smith yelled for the other man as he ran away only to find himself confronted by Angelus in vampire visage.

Weatherby raced into the area. �Stop her, you ponce!� he yelled without focusing on the scene before him and came up short when Spike stepped into his path in vampire facade.

Weatherby turned his head to the side and saw that Collins was now outside the van trapped between Buffy in demon persona and Drusilla still in human features.
